Pop-Top, All-Terrain CaravanMostly happy, but dissappointed due to roof problems
Overall 70% satisfied but quality of workmanship in some areas disappoints. Roof is way too heavy for old style lifter system in use. Needs are radical re-think and/or re-engineering and strengthening of lifter bars. Roof comes down out of alignment making it hard to latch roof on drivers side of van. Keeping awning loose etc does not improve situation. Van tows well, like ensuite, single beds very comfortable, lighting very good, fridge and A/C both work well. Cabinet quality just OK, clearly not a lot of pride in workmanship. Does lack internal storage space. No pull out pantry although this was a great feature on our Freedom van. Would I buy another Jayco? Probably but steer clear of pop-tops.

Very very disappointed
Leaked in first rain, causing paintwork inside to bubble, was fixed and has done it again. Cupboard clips not working cupboards fall open during travel. Overhead cupboard broke away from wall. Solar panel controller failed. Blind refuses to come up. Window starring at screw point. Cupboard doors not aligned. Outside shower trickles only no pressure at all. Very unhappy customer here !!

Great to tow!
Few teething problems with lights now fine. Very good to tow doesn't sway. Inside very well set out toilet & shower excellent. Aur conditioner bit heavy on roof to lift compared to discovery model but works very effectively. Comfortable inside .

Built to a price but a dam good van for the money
We finished a12000km run from Perth to Birdsvillle, to Melbourne, Tassy and home. A lot of the travel was on dirt, muddy and rough roads and sealed roads that were worse than unsealed. Guess what?, the van went like a dream. Sure there were small issues, but none not fixable on the road, cabinet screws coming undone, small water ingress through a window seal in torrentional rain. This van held up as well as vans costing three times as much.
The finish of this Jayco Outback was as good as, if not better than other vans I have owned. Sure it wa...Read more

Extremely Dissappointing.
No grease in Wheel Bearings(8). Non return Valve in scheme water incorrectly installed. Electrical terminals not crimped(squashed with pliers) Interior cabinetry very poorly installed; many cabinet components failed including the overhead cabinet which became detached. Yes these are being addressed under warranty, but why so poor workmanship? Lift your game Jayco. Not Happy

Lack of bench space.
One thing that soon becomes evident with the Jayco Journey Outback pop top van is the lack of bench space. Very little room to prepare meals or wash up etc. Stove and fridge are excellent as are single beds. Lighting is exceptional and storage space is adequate but we find the toilet capacity hopeless along with water tanks - the water capacity can't support the shower if free camping unless a constant water supply is available.

Great van and terrific service from Jayco 17.55.9
What a great van! Our fifth new Jayco, the layout is great, very peaceful colour scheme, toes beautifully, looks smart, and great value for money, picked up new in June 2016, headed of on big trip, went into Townsville Jayco to have the roof adjusted and while here we mentioned that the rear wall had a bulge in it when hot. The next morning we had an email from h/o wanting photos, every few days another email ask how the van was. On our return home we took our van into our dealership, who sent it to Melbourne to fix/replace rear wall. Jayco h/o were fantastic and replaced the complete caravan. Where else but Jayco would you get this great service.

Excellent value for money
Excellent - Jim 23 May 2016
Puchased my 17-55-8 touring van in January 2016, have done 3k trip into Queensland, Van tows excellent with the dual axles and performs very well.
I have just had the first service & a couple of warranty jobs done at Jayco Nowra were i would recommend the sales team & the service team,
all was done with no hesitation . This is an excellent dealership, very perfessional. Our hand over took 3 hours never missed one thing.
Other than a couple of minor things we have found the van very comfortable & easy to use . The quality of the van & appliances are very good for a van that is reasonably priced.

Great
I've read a lot of negative comments about this van I don't know if I'm one of the lucky ones or there are a lot of knockers out there but I'm more than pleased with it. The $ value against any thing similar is huge. We have only had one weekend away in the van so far but love every thing about it the lighting is fantastic. The new van is light years a head of our last van discovery out back same size tones more room and the end ensuite is Awsome I really rate this van and personally I think it's one of the best looking van around if you are thinking of a Jayco I would recommend it.

A Fantastic Van At A Great Price Point
It has now been well over 2 years since buying our Jayco Journey pop top & it has been perfect for us. We bought this van unseen at the time as it was a new model and only the touring model was on display. I have to say we were very happy at the price point as we felt we got a lot of van for the money. We haven't really had many problems at all & we do get away at least one weekend every month and a few extended trips each year. The van has been fantastic for free camping which was why we went for the outback model. Like many others who have bo...Read more
ught new Jayco's we have had a drawer front come off but was very easy to fix, didn't help that we probably had far too much heavy stuff in that drawer. The longer we have the van the easier it has become to make our own little modifications to it to suit us. All I can say is it is a fantastic van at a fantastic price point.Similar opinion? Some minor teething problems, but acceptable.
As with most Jayco branded products, quality control is very poor. They need to pick up their game on quality control in what is now a very competitive market. Having said that, we have towed our 2015 Journey for more than 20,000 kms and, apart from the obligatory draw front falling off and a few minor leaks that were fixed, found it towed well behind our diesel Ford Territory fitted with rear spring air bags and WDH. We had ESC fitted to the van as an option (which I believe now comes already fitted). We have two single beds as one bed is lon...Read more
ger than the other and therefore accommodates my 6ft. But you do need to spend some needle-time on fitted sheets, if you prefer them and because of the two different mattress sizes need to carry two different size sheets. We had no problems with the electrics, plumbing, fridge, air conditioner TV etc but do unhook the TV and put it on a bed when travelling, as advised on a sticker on the TV bracket. In summary, we are comfortable with the purchase bearing in mind that you get what you pay for.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Jayco Journey Outback Value for Money
Jayco Journey Outback Pop Top 17.55 Ft Tandem Axle Double Bed En-suite.
This is our fifth caravan and we have learned from every caravan we have purchased that no matter the brand and all the assurances by dealers and manufacturers, there are always teething problems with whatever brand you buy. We found that both the Jayco Starcraft and the Jayco Journey are made to a price and in our opinion very good value for money. As with all big ticket items you purchase, it pays to do your homework and have reasonable expectations.

Not perfect but good touring van
We purchased the pop top in July 2015. The van at that time had been sitting in the dealers yard for 14 months. Needless to say it had been accessed for spare parts for other vans. Rust was also prevalent on the draw bar, hub caps and rain water had damaged the walls. We had the option of purchasing a newer model but preferred the layout of the older van. We were given assurances by the sale representative that all issues raised would be resolved before we picked it up and would have a new van warranty including a discounted price. The de...Read more
alership, Campervan, were true to their word. We have now had over 12 months experience with the Journey and travelled across three (3) states and have used the van frequently. On the downside, yes, there are quality issues. Although these are not insurmountable, they are still minor annoyances. Compared to a number of other pop tops of similar size the finish is not as good. On the upside, the reality is the price of the Journey can be up to 50% less, more in some instances, than the price of an equivalent pop top van. For example it is not unusual to be paying $50-60,000 for a comparable pop top. So perhaps you get what you pay for. To date when we have had a problem, Jayco have come to the party and fixed it under warranty, not that there has been anything major to date. As a touring van, it tows beautifully. We replaced the standard coupling with a McHitch coupling and that has made a big difference with reversing the van by someone who is not all that good at doing so. We have had no difficulties with the appliances or transfer of energy source from electric, to gas, to battery. We have been caught a few times in a storm and had no leakage issues. The journey was remarkably stable in high winds. At a little over 2 tonne loaded, I am pleased we chose a van with a twin axle. So all in all, value for money, I rate the 2014 Journey very well. Ultimately it depends on what you want to spend as to what you get in return.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Very disappointed
I purchased a Journey outback in September 2015. In the first week one of the struts broke then the tent came away from the van. Both repaired. Since then the shower stall has come off the back wall, the front of a drawer has fallen off, a cupboard door has come off its hinges. Both bedroom cupboards leaked and damaged the adjoining wall. A handle on one of the support legs broke, the contact used on part of the walls hasn't been installed properly and it is bubbled, the boot is warped as well as the boot lid. I asked for a replacement caravan and was told I need at least 30 things wrong with the caravan. Purchased from Brisbane Camperland and paid for it in full.

Purchased a Jayco Journey 17.55.9 a month ago from Ballarat Jayco after parking up our aussie swag camper to transition to more comfort as less outback adventures now planned. From time of purchase to getting it I became concerned after reading all the knockers out there. I dont know if Ballarat Jayco did their pre delivery well or the factory has picked up their game as after travelling for approx 2,500 km in two weeks from Ballarat to Cowra/Bathurst/Newcastle and home it towed very well in all conditions i.e Highway/Rough & bouncy rural road...Read more
s and steep hilly back roads (all bitumen) including gusty head winds and rain. Have used all equipment supplied and no faults yet including the fridge which I was concerned about after having previous troubles with 3ways. Had heavy rain in Newcastle, No leaks noted. No shoddy workmanship that I could see. (other than the birds nest of plumbing under the chassis but I have sussed that out and it will be tidied up/protected) All in all quite happy. Achieved average milage with a manual NX pajero (also loaded up with drawers an fridge and roof rack) of 14.7km per 100km (boswer/gps used not in car computer ((dont trust them)). approx 3/4ltrs more per 100km than when towing the camper. Extra jerry cans/bladder on roof will be a must now with the little tank (88ltrs) fitted to the Pajero. It is what it is - I am sure some plastic thingies used will not last the distance but they can be replace as required. i do believe Jayco's are good value for money and some other makers are ripping people The chassis and suspension was what i am most impressed with as seems very sure footed but our next trip next month will test it on well graded dirt roads as we are off to outback FNQ (lawn hill/bourketown & cooktown) and you can bet if we strike any weakness in the van (not caused by my recklessness) i will let you all know. For information Weighbridge loaded 2,243kg - Towball weight loaded 175-180 (without front jerry can full). Picky annoying stuff i will rectify -- radio fitted in a silly spot and hard to access if someone sitting at table (remote on way) no light/temp gauge in fridge!!, External tap fitted to road side (drivers side) of drawbar which is a nuisance when stopped on side of road. That is all. Had it for just over three years now - wife keeps logs of our travels and vans done 43572km - no issues - was going to update this year to a full van (no pop top) but decided it does everything we need with the exception of external kitchen - few thousand km on well made dirt roads (no tracks) limited dust inside but not enough to worry me - still happy as2 comments

lled 9,705KM and used 1,384 lts or diesel. We got to Darwin in 5 days and on arrival noticed sight feathering on the inside of all 4 van tyres. The van had travelled approximately 6 to 7000km. I contacted Jayco Darwin (Jason and Michel) They were terrific and fitted us in their busy schedule. All 4 wheels had 3 deg: toe-in. They showed/explained what they did and that was terrific not just being told “its fixed’. The van tyre wear is showing no signs of being an ongoing issue after the nearly 4000k return trip home from Darwin. The shower screen came adrift between Camooweal and Mt ISA but it may have been my lack of attention to latching it in place after storing doona’s in the shower space as we don’t use the internal shower. An internal door handle broke (they remind me of the early ford XF door handles) Replaced no drama by Jayco Ballarat. It rained and rained and bloody rained between Emerald and lightning Ridge. No leaks at all. Travelled about 130km on good graded dirt roads, minimal dust incursion but attention will need to be made to the roof seal at the back and the fridge/hot water vents next time we travel on dirt. The van towed very well indeed. Sill not so sure about extended distances on outback roads unless I put a lot more preparation toughening up the undercarriage and dustproofing vents and this is partly the reason why I chickened out on travelling from Borroloola to Hells gate/lawn hill and back tracked on the bitumen to Barkley Homestead, the other part of the decision making was I was told by reliable source that Lawn Hill was nuts with travellers. Well pleased with the vans general performance. We ended leaving the fridge on gas 24/7 and it coped OK up north in 34deg days but personally from experience up there I would have preferred a compressor fridge. Best bits of the pop top – Outside shower-Outside Table-Single Beds (More room inside to move around) TV antenna and I hate to say it the toilet as being so busy even free camping toilet breaks are and issue especially for ladies. That leads to the worst part of the trip. It was not the car or van but the caravan herd that are up there. There is a bucket load of people doing the caravan thing now in the ‘Nomad Season”. I think the infrastructure and caravan parks in the main are designed for old 13 and 14’ vans not larger 17' plus vans and the associated large 4wd’s. We felt each night we were being loaded into the parks like cattle on a cattle truck and milked of our money just to park up for 12 to 14 hrs so no sure ‘caravanning’ is for me, maybe back to the aussie swag camper for roads less travelled inland and cabins for the coastal trips.Warrant up-still fairly happy-only real issue is cupboard latches. Replacement of defective caravan proving a problem
Last year [2015] I bought a Journey single axle van and after a 4 month trip ended up with 2 foolscap pages of defects. In Sept Jayco replaced the van and I upgraded to a tandem for the extra $'s. Since then we have had problems with the window blinds/screens and the head bump pad over the door falling off which were repaired at the first service. Then when free camping the battery ran flat and I found a loose wire at the battery which had not been crimped properly- thinking this was the problem found out the Bosch deep cycle battery would not ...Read more
take a charge. This was replaced at Dubbo by the Jayco dealer under warranty. Two days later we struck rain for the first time and woke to find mattresses blankets doonas and the lounge suite saturated. We then booked back into the Dubbo dealer and had to wait 4 days in a park for the appointment. We were handed back the van assured that the leak had been found and resealed. Off to Lightning Ridge and where it rained and the same bloody thing happened again [so much for Dubbo]. On inspection on top of the van portion [pop top] there were places where no sealant had been used, so I got some applied same thinking I may have solved the problem -but no next shower in came the water again, so I have now taped up the windows and started praying for receiving such a wonderful product [twice in 12 months]. My dealer [Halls Mildura] have been trying to help via phone on where the problem may be but so far I will have to wait for the next rain to see what happens.6 comments

Size does matter
About to collect our brand new Jayco Journey OB and arguing with the dealer re the mattress size - previous 2 x Jaycos we insisted and were given 6' mattresses with infills making them 6' 6". (who the hell can sleep in a 5' 3" mattress bed + infill).
This time the dealer we've bought off previously is advising that :
a) He will not be paying for the extra $400 to get the longer mattress even though it was in the contract when the deposit was put down
b) If someone decides to cough up the $400 he can't get one for over 6 weeks

about to lose a sale for $44000 for the sake of a $400 mattress that should be standard at 6'....can you believe that the designers have never thought that most people are well over 5'6" tall and that their tiny beds only help to make the van look roomier but are very uncomfortable to sleep in (the infill even with a 6' mattress is ridiculous but I guess it's all about size isn't it?). Think it through, put longer mattresses in to begin with, and consider the cost of a lost sale as opposed to doing what should be done in the first place - a bigger mattressSimilar opinion? Poor finish
Just brought van 6yrs old but never been used, staples protruding through plastic, tape and card board over exhaust vent for fridge when on gas, cupboard doors screws falling out, poor wiring, plumbing needs to be modified and it hasn't travelled 100km yet. I read all the bad reviews but thought they couldn't be that bad with the amount of vans on the road.

22 weeks and still under repair, Jayco or CaravanLand will not replace or refund monies.
Now the laminate has bubbles in it.
Very poor workmanship.
Who checks the quality assurance prior to leaving Jayco, or, before delivery...no one on this Lemon.
Be aware when you purchase a Jayco......
Even the repairer stated he would not buy one.......now that says something.

Received a question about the Double Bed size
but then you will have trouble walking around the bed. It depends how tall you are if you put the bolster insert in or not. If you are more than 6 ft tall then this bed is going to drive you crazy. Your feet will hang out. We make up the bed without the bolster, and then just before we go to bed, we drop the bolster insert in, and pull the bed extenders out. This means you can no longer walk around the bed. We use a double bed fitted sheet on the mattress only, which is too big and I have put elastic straps on the sheet underneath to keep the sheet tight. If you use a top sheet, we use a single bed sheet as the double bed sheet is way to big. The actual design of the bed is great because it gives you a sense of space, but it is just a bit of mucking about every time you go to bed at night. It is ok if you just want to have a nap during the day. Both the Starcraft pop top and the Journey Pop top have this design of the bed. It takes a bit of getting used to, but overall we are happy with the Journey. Our previous full sized caravans all had a Queen size bed. We downsized with the pop tops and it is working fine. Enjoy your Journey. The bed is a small double bed.
You need to put the bolster insert near where the pillows are to make it longer,... Read more
