Best driving/value SUV I've driven (inc. petrol 2.5L Mazda CX-5?!)
+ incredibly meaty amd responsive little diesel.
+ lovely well weighted and very direct steering (even better than our Mazda 6!).
+ handling for SUV ( Aussie Graeme Gambold did the suspension tune - more resolved/settled than equivalent ix35 I drove).
+ buying second hand very good value due to many people wanting a Mazda or Toyota?!
+ still more warranty even buying second-hand than most other companies with their brand new vehicle warranty.
+ interior (and exterior) ambience with subtle stainless steel highlights and clear big speedo.

Not that impressed anymore / traded it in the minute it was paid off!
I've had my platinum kia sportage since December 2011. Initially I was super impressed with it but.. over time the seats seem to be harder and less comfortable.
The rear indicators are in the most stupid of places - down in the bumpers - I've been abused by other drivers for not indicating when I have been and nearly rear ended a few times - these are unsafe and need to be moved up into the main light area for safety reasons.

Great things about it and the 3 improvements it needs
Had the platinum diesel for coming up on four years. Purchased from new due to good safety, 5 year warranty, price and value for money. It's been gr8 and reliable.
Some really good aspects of it are the amazing turning circle (I think it sets the bench-mark) and there is heaps of room in the back. It is highly reliable; hasn't missed a beat. Did well on a trip to the snow in a blizard (using alpine diesel of course or the diesel would turn to wax). Engine is near best in class powerful and the 6 speed transmission is very smooth. ong trip we get 7 L/100Km and if we reduce from 110mh to 100Kmh that figure drops a bit to 6.5 L/100Km. Around town we get 10 L/100Km. You don't need to slow down for speed humps in Richmond when you visit the city as there is good clearance. I disagree with the motoring writers about its handling - I think they are the ones with a problem. I live in the country and drive hard and push my vehicles up windy mountain roads. I have had Toyota Celica, Mazda 6, Fords and Land Rovers and this little diesel leaves them for dead and handles really well. I used to rally a well set-up Lotus Escort back in the 80 and I recon I would take 20 percent off my section times if I was in this Sportage. But I would change the front seats. The things to fix: 1) Fuel tank it too small for the country. It only takes 50 litres - smallest volume I have ever had in a vehicle and annoying having to regularly refuel. 2) The seat bolsters are too small. Possibly the industry smallest so it doesn't feel snug on cornering for a driver who likes to drive (but my grandmother wouldn't notice).

Good value and no problems
Purchased the car new five years ago. No problems except for a sticking fuel filler hatch which was easily fixed. Might not be the most exciting drive around but we found it best of that sized SUV at the time. Plenty of inclusions.Diesel is economical and the car is an easy drive in the suburbs and gets along well on the highway.Servicing is reasonably inexpensive and some sat nav updates have been included.Never thought we would own a Kia but now very happy that we do - and would buy another again in the future. The only (non-service)replacements over the last five years (and 40.000 km) have been a battery and a set of wiper blades Customer service from selling/servicing dealer has been good.

Nice but not for me
I'm looking for a new car so decided to test drive the Kia Sportage Platinum diesel.
Great looking funky car. Build quality inside and out is good and the price is excellent. Lots of features and bang for your bucks, ie: leather heated front row seats. Cooled drivers seat, (don't know why they didn't cool the passenger seat as well though), Bluetooth phone connectivity, proximity keyless entry, elect diver seat and the list goes on. What they didn't include, which I wanted, was satnav.
Driving the car, at start there's the usual diesel no...Read more
ise at idle which disappeared after the car was in motion. However, at 90km/h plus, there is quite a bit of road noise. I specifically tested it on a freeway at 100km/h for road noise and it was loud enough to be a distraction. I do a lot of country driving and it's too noisy. Gear changes were ok, except when you kicked it down a gear. then not quite so smooth. Space - I'm 5'11" and there is not much head room in the drivers seat. I adjusted the seat as low as it could go, and nearly still touched the roof. The same could be said for the rear seats, again my head nearly hit the roof. leg room in the front or back seemed ok. Rear boot is small. General overall quality and finish. Kia have come a long way. It's as good as the locally made cars, not as good as the Jap cars and certainly still a way behind the Europeans. Price, features service costs. Road noise at higher speeds, little head room, small boot space, steering a bit vague.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Top pick for the money. Great Value 2014 SLi AWD
Reliable, economical, we'll made and great handling and 7 year warranty with fixed price servicing. Drives and handles very well. If you are looking for a small SUV, this would be hard to pass up. I looked at other SUVs and the Kia was the stand out bang for buck.

Best Car Ever
This is my second car after the very disastrous Land Rover Freelander. This car has everything. I bought the base model but this car has almost everything you need need in a car. Kia really raised the bar for car manufacturing. Simply amazing and would recommend everyone who is looking for a good family car.

The Diesel is a revelation!
Bought a MY 2013 Sportage Platinum earlier this year - plenty of torque, cruises effortlessly and the diesel is quiet, smooth and economical (regularly 7.2 l/100km). Exceptionally well equipped and plenty of get up and go when required (especially at overtaking speeds). I have had no problems and find that the reversing camera makes up for the restricted rear vision. With the recent increase to 7 year unlimited km warranty and capped price servicing I am convinced it was a good buy.

No longer a brand snob.
Couldn't go past the looks, finish and value with this base model package.
Have recently had Toyotas, was looking for an upgrade, read a few reviews and had a good look around at the alternatives.
Was also talked into having a look at the Sportage and was more than surprised at the offering. The features I was looking for were all standard and a 5 year warranty was the icing on the cake.
The alternative Toyota Rav4 lacked a lot of the features, had 2 years less warranty and was dearer to boot.
Value, standard features and a great looker.
My main gripe's been the brake dust on the alloy wheels.

Ticks allot of boxes
In deciding to look at getting a Mid size SUV I thought it only fair to put all cars on the table and assess accordingly, despite any prejiduces I might have, and at this point I should note that I've never owned a Kia previously, and frankly a few years ago I probably didn't think I ever would. Nonetheless, the Kia along with similar Mid size SUV models from Hyundai (sister Co. to Kia), Mazda, Nissan, Toyota and Mitsubishi were all looked at and test driven. What I found made the Kia stand out from the others, and to my own surprise was firs...Read more
tly the looks, I think they've (though subjective) for the most part, nailed the design on this car. The front is dynamic to the eye and this is carried through to the rear of the car. Inside, (the Si Premium) I found the quality of the materials was good and above the average to similar cars and price points, e.g. dash and door interior panels are soft to touch and feel solid. At 5'8 I'm no giant, though found plenty of leg room in the front and rear. The drivers seating position is good and the seats (front and rear) are comfortable and supportive. Whilst the steering wheel has most of the controls, the angle of the dash required a fair degree of lean to work any of the radio buttons. I also found the radio/audio screen display was somewhat dated compared to the competition. The rear luggage area is good, and better than most of the competition, though slightly compromised by the full size spare. We went for the Si Premium, the features, both standard in the range and to the specific model are above the competition at that price point. After having a 6 cylinder auto previously I was cautious about the capabilities of a 2.0 Ltr auto, however I found the auto to be smooth and the engine more than capable of taking the family and a boot full of gear and packed roof pod (more on that later). One issue that I've found, is that there appears to be on occasion, a flat spot in the gear change between first and second if the car goes over a spoon drain or similar, something I'll raise with the dealership at the 3k service. In terms of economy, its not the best or worst, I probably was expecting slightly better performance. The car never has, and never will see a serious dirt road, so all driving to date has been suburban, to which it has performed very well. Points into corners with minimal body roll, whilst absorbing bumps with minimal transference in noise or shudder throughout the car. My wife, who struggled with the transition from the small sized Astra to the size and dimensions of Territory, has found none of this with the Sportage. A gripe that I would have is that the roof rails are only available from the Si Premium model and up, and unlike some other manufacturers models, there is no capacity in the Si to bolt/attach roof rail footings to the roof. The only option is to have roof rails that have a hook that clips under the top of the door frame on either side, something that can't be good for the paint work I suggest. It's been 8 months since we purchased the car and my opinion is that it's a terrific car thats refined well for Aust. conditions and would i recommend to anyone to include on their list if after a Mid size SUV.Similar opinion? Picked up our new 2014 sportage sli recently and for the money it ticks a lot of boxes, we looked at a lot of similar suv's but in the end it came down to the sportage or the ix35, the kia sold us on looks and just felt a bit roomier. Driving's a breeze, auto everything with all the controls logically laid out, adequate storage, cubby holes etc (i love the chilled glove box). The A pillar is a little chunky but you get used to it, rear vision is a bit limited but the reverse camera more than makes up for that. We've taken it off road for some ...Read more

excellent vehicle
We have owned our kia sportage platinum diesel for over 4 years, has 50000 klms on the clock. Very happy with power and fuel economy. As value for your money you need to look at the kia sportage, especially the diesel model.
The only thing I would complain about is the A pillar for vision and the brake pad life replaced at 35000 klms. Wife complains seats a little to firm. Would consider buying a kia again when upgrading.

Kia Sportage Si Premium
The 7 year warranty and service program sold me on this vehicle, I was looking at 3 other brands but none backed their product the same way. I love the look and style of my Kia, settling for the Techno Orange colour, but the brown and grey would have made me just as happy. I find the power (122KW) to be more than enough power for the around town and motorway driving I do. It was 3 weeks before I realised the Kia was a Techtronic gear-box, the 6 speed auto performed so smoothly. Fuel consumption between 9.2 and 10.2 l/100km depending on what mu...Read more
sic I am listening to. Around town the high SVU clearance handles all the pot holes and poor conditions that the Brisbane roads have to offer. I could not afford the diesel but test drove one and was impressed with the performance. I found being up high a bit of a put-off at first and steering on the open road skittery, but have gotten used to both and now enjoy the higher aspect, on the open road you still have to be careful as the Kia needs to be driven. Bluetooth is clear and the stereo links in with my phone, ipod and USB with great sounds. At 10K milage everything is still tight, no rattles or odd noises. Lots of extras right down to side lights when doing a turn at night. Auto window wipers, auto lights, auto dimming rear vision mirror and excellent backing camera make the day to day driving easy. Parking is easy as the vehicle is compact so pulling into a supermarket car-park is done in one move, backing out using the camera and mirrors is even easier. My only problem now is getting my Kia off my wife on the weekends, may be time to trade the trusty Commodore in for a second Kia EDIT January 2017: 35,000 km traveled and just had the vehicle in for a service, general oil, filters and tune, capped price service with consumables @ $357.00. Not bad for a years running. No other issues found with the car. Average fuel usage around town seems to be 9.8l/100km. I am not heavy footed but certainly not the last away from lights (6 speed gearbox helps). I do regret not buying the diesel version as I think on hindsight it would have suited what I am using the vehicle for better. Still no regrets buying.Similar opinion? Very good car, and great value
My wife loved the look of the Kia Sportage Platinum diesel. I thought it would be terrible, but it was great on test drive. Two years later it is still very impressive, not as good as my Land Rover Discovery, but that cost more than twice as much. Only real complaint is that the visibility is poor, so 4 stars instead of 5. Fuel consumption is higher than expected, but not huge, around 8 to 9 with mainly short trips. I know it is mechanically almost identical to the ix35, but it somehow seems better. Would I get another? Most certainly.

Best looking SUV in its class
I purchased my new Diesel Platinum Sportage July 2013. I was taken by its looks, its a real head turner. Build quality is excellent, heaps of power and good fuel economy. I looked at the Hyundai ix35, they don't look as good and after reading a lot of comparison reviews the Sportage always came out on top. Very happy with my purchase and would recommend this vehicle to anyone looking for a medium size SUV.

Very good choice so far
We purchased a new diesel SLi Sportage in Nov '11. We traded in a 2003 Toyota Kluger which had been trouble free but a bit thirsty & we wanted a smaller car for around town. At the time it was very difficult to get the Sportage due to supply problems. It would have been much easier to get the similar Hyundai iX35, however, we preferred the styling of the Kia.
We had a 16' pop top to tow & the diesel was our preferred choice for that task. Interestingly the Sportage has a higher tow & tow ball rating than the larger Kluger.
Car has now done 54...Read more

My wife and I bought our 2010 Sportage 2lt petrol at Brisbane Motorama since we had had a fantastic run out of our 2001 Kia Rio which we've had for 8 years and 240,000 klms. We live 45 klms out of town and do around 600 klms a week in our Sportage. They are just a fantastic car and 100% faultless, can't kill it with a stick!

30k so far all good.
Never owned a KIA before, so basically this purchase of diesel all wheel drivv about 2 yr ago was based on budget and a bit of a punt.
3 k on this car has had no faults whatsoever, yes it true there are better faster more comfortable vehicles around but in its class and dollar bracket I can't complain at all.
Fuel consumption isn't quite as good as the sticker on the window says but it's not far off at times.
The diesel engine has heaps of power and cruises on the freeway nicely.
Suspension seemed a little hard at first but has now softened to be just right.

Very pleased with this purchase
Forget what you think you know from past KIA products. This company has definitely moved on. Was recently looking to replace my 2007 Toyota RAV-4. Shortlisted a number of SUV's including the KIA (which we really only tried as the dealer was close by). Wow... immediately impressed with the test drive along with the fit and finish of the vehicle and what you got for your money. Moved it immediately to the top of the short list. Also, had never considered buying a diesel engine until we drove one at the test drive (my wife drove it too and didn't ...Read more
realise it was a diesel until I mentioned it to her later). Closest rival was the Mazda CX-5 and while it may have handled the bumps fractionally better, it couldn't match the KIA's 7 year factory warranty (Mazda is 3 years) nor the amount of kit you got for the same money. Bottom line... we bought a Platinum diesel. After a couple of months of ownership, here's a list of the notable good and bad points (in decreasing order of priority) as we see it. What we like: * What you get for your money * Seven year warranty * Quality of finish and build. Panel gaps are even and everything feels well made with quality materials. Nothing has broken/fallen off thus far which is more than I can say for other new vehicles I have had * Quality of drive (seen some reports saying its a bit harsh/bumpy/stiff. Maybe just a little but definitely much better than my previous RAV-4 and far from unpleasant or a "deal breaker") * Appearance (design) * Overall quietness. Interior cabin noise is much less than my old RAV-4. Engine "growl" only heard during idle (faintly with all windows up) and acceleration. Cruising is very quiet * Power of diesel coupled with 6 speed auto. Accelerates very briskly from low speeds and has plenty on tap for highway overtaking.Similar opinion? I have a deal to buy kia 2012 platinum diesel 4wd for $15000 with 100000km on odometer. I am in a doubt whether I should buy this car or not as its Going to be 8 years old. Dealer is giving me extra 100000km warranty for extra $1200. Can anyone guide me is this a good deal to go for? Or i should buy a newer sportage?

Check out car sales.com for comparative prices. It's done less than 13k per year so it's probably been well looked after and obviously not done much time on the road in 8 years. Price seems fine but low km is not always good for diesel particulate filters. If you buy it, fill it up with premium diesel and take it for a good highway run to clean it out. It's a kia, so mostly reliable.
Does it have a tow bar? Has it towed caravans? That can cause extra wear and tear on the rear suspension.

I bought my 2011 Kia Sportage platinum diesel turbo 2.0 L from auction. Driving for last 3 years with NO real issues. Recently it went very sluggish in lower gears no pick up etc. Engine light came up.
Diagnosed P0404 and suggested by NRMA that the Throttle body and EGR VALVE IS CLOGGED.
Throttle body and Turbine pump+ Mass Airflow sensor all were found very dirty nearly clogged. Cleaned with recommended cleaner sprays for each area now nearly new.
Started using BP Ultimate diesel has lowest sulphur recommended. Added diesel fuel additive to tank and replaced fuel filter.
After all that improvement noticed but not 100 % yet.
Engine light comes back after reset.
I am told EGR VALVE NEEDS proper cleaning. Could not do it with my mechanic he feels is bit too complicated to take it out for cleaning.
Any one can suggest how to clean my egr valve without opening/ dismantling from engine?? Mustaq nsw

Far too complicated for me to answer, sorry. I bought my car new. Good luck, someone else may be able to help you. Maybe write direct to Kia?
Talk to the Kia people online, an see what they say, I don,t fully trust the N.R.M.A, at times, not fully happy with there mechanics, If Kia makes it then they should know about it, only a thought!!
Too much city/suburb driving is NOT good for diesels. Its not what their meant for! Common problem with all c ity/surburb diesel cars. Should have got the petrol version.
