My Mitsubishi Outlander 2006 (ZG.ZH - 11.06 to 10.12) has a fuel tank level indicator problem is the problem with the sensor or the computer. When full the indication is correct but rapidly drops and at 300 kilometres shows need for refuel, but only takes 30 litres to full.

Hey guys, Im looking at buying 2006 Mitsubishi Outlander XLS ZG Auto 4x4 MY07
and wondering if it is capable of off road and rugged terrain and also beach driving with a lot of soft sand? We do a lot of camping, we currently have a Pajero that needs major repairs so thinking its easier to get another car. Thanks
2 answers
Personally think it would struggle just cause its a 4x4 dosnt mean it can handle off road. Not built like a pajero
I would buy a Plug in electric model. The combined power from the petrol and electric motors can give a Chrysler 300c a run for its money. Add 4wd and you have a good balance for all 3 motors.

OUTLANDER ZG, ZH
hi

I have the Mitsubishi Outlander 2006 (ZG.ZH - 11.06 to 10.12) with exactly the same problem, is this a sign of a dodgy batch of tank level sensors, and if so is there a way of fixing this ?
3 answers
No problem wilth the sensors on my PHEV.
From Bob Davidson, I have found that when I eventally plucked up enogh courage to do it, I let the fuel guage keep telling me to refuel but I kept on driving until I finally did get the small fuel sign telling me that there was a need to put in more fuel. I did drive another twenty or so kilometers before I refuelled and since then I have noticed an improvement in the way the level indicator has been behaving. I will let the fuel drop again until I get the correct low level indiator activated again to see if it gets even better.
An add on it seems that the level transmitter needs to be exercised throughout its full range occasionally.

How long should a timing chain last in a 2012 Diesel Auto Outlander ? Service manual doesn't state when it should be changed.
3 answers
Most manufactures say a timing chain or/and belt (belt is dearer) should be replaced at about 80000km however they can last longer. Depends on the use of the vehicle and quality of services and parts you have over the years. Tell-tale sign is a car acting sluggish as you don't want it to locks up. AS they cost about $600 on average to replace or $248 for a kit. Not a nice bill to look forward to. I am not an expert just my own experience.
It does state in service guides and can also be found on Mitsubishi website as has different scheduled services for petrol vs diesel. And if towing or not etc
The timing chain is designed to last the life of the diesel motor.

Hi there,
I have a 2007 Mitsubishi Outlander XLS......`is there a DIY way to accurately test/check if the 4x4 function is actually working when activated? The 4WD light on the instrument cluster comes on. but for some reason I don't think that it's actually mechanically engaging into 4x4 mode.....
Thank you.
Dennis

I test mine with a standing start heavy throttle application on some loose gravel
2wd mode the front wheels will spin easily - esp light will come on to correct
4wd auto mode there will be less spin as the rear wheels engage very quickly - esp light will likely still come on and you will take off much faster
4wd lock mode you pretty much will rocket away without much spin - so esp light will most likely not come on at all or much.
I usually drive in 4wd auto mode on any slippery (wet) or dirt road or when towing) or hilly windy roads. Or 2wd mode in the flat city centers
4wd lock mode I only use on very slippery roads as I've had the "Diff wind up" where you get this shuddering through the car if you use it on dry roads. Can do damage I'm told so be careful to only use on slippery wet or dirt roads
Make sure all your tyres are the same brand/ size age too as this helps the 4wd system work correctly
Tyre outer size variability is not good for the 4wd system
I believe the 4wd system only works up to 100kmh then it cuts out. But it re-engages once below 100kmh again this is very good as some other brands cut out above 40kmh
Hope this helps

2008 Mitsubishi out-lander engine making noise as if metal is rolling on a rough surface. Any ideas?
1 answer
Dosent sound good at all.
Could be a major bearing inside has worn away and rattling around.
Also could be like my sister replacing the engine oil dip stick with the auto trans dip stick.
If engine is sluggish could be valve timing issues.
You really should find an honest mechanic to have a look.
Cheers

Hi there, my wife has a 09 zg 2.4 outlander! It has a belt on it now but can only find replacement kits that have chains! Would the belt kit for the zh fit as it is the same side engine?? Thanks
5 answers
I have 09 zg as well. Last time when I went to Mitsubishi for service I asked them to check/replace engine belt as per log book. But what they said me is my car have chain and not belt and doesn't need to replace.
Are you sure you have belt and not chain?
Nope, defo a belt!!! Thanks
You must have a V6 model as the 2.4 litre as well as 2 litre from ZG onward were Chain timing gear. Belts were fazed out due to excessive cost for replacement but were retained on V6 version. You will not find a 2.4 litre engine in Any outlander from 2009 onward with a timing belt.

I'd be curious to know how many other Australian Mitsubishi Outlander owners are having problems with the Check Engine Warning Light coming on in their vehicle? This issue has been ongoing for nearly three years with our vehicle. It has been in at Mitsubishi for about four months of the last year.
5 answers
What issue? The warning light comes on, but what error code does it give?
What has the servicing agent said the error is?
Could be something simple like your petrol cap isn't on tight enough.
I have a very cheap OBD2 scanner, an Elm327, that plugs into the OBD port and I can read the error codes output from the ECU on a mobile phone. Any error codes that come up - none yet - I can Google and take action.
I got the Check Engine warning light *once only* after my ASC failed, and cut power to my engine ... about 1000kms short of my 45K service. The warning light ran for about the next 30kms of driving, and at the service I mentioned it. The best they got back to me with was something about updating the firmware. But that's my service centres response to everything.... yeah. Bit miffed about the battery in my NEW car (purchased in Mar 2014) dying earlier this year and being told by Roadside Assist that the battery is dodgy and should have gone for at least three years, and then being told by the dealer that the warranty on it is only 12 months. Great customer service, hey? (I hear only Jeep is better). I want to like my car, and I do, but the whole experience has been disappointing. Like the authorised accessories - they installed roof-racks that were KNOWN to have issues with resonance when driving over 60kms/hr ... however they don't actually fix the design, no, they just give you "plugs" when you crack the *poos* (yes, apparently I swore there and couldn't post my response) and complain about it. They also lied about fuel economy.... yeah. It's stacking up against them, isn't it.
hey SMB i have an 05 outlander and have the engine warning light problem. Mitsubishi act like they have never heard of it and of course want to spend 2-3 hours searching the cause. Codes suggest O2 sensors among other things. Im getting several different codes and think its an ECU problem. daveyb40 at gmail dotcom

Hello there, I have a 2012 ZH. My question is, when I turn the car off and have not put it in park, I can take the keys out of the ignition whether it's in drive or neutral, is this a fault?
3 answers
I'm not a mechanic but I'd assume this is a fault as I just checked on my car and the key can't be removed unless it is in park...suggest you take it in for a check up.
I have just had it serviced and they say that is normal for this model.
Hi, No this is not a fault continue driving it happlily
