Super efficient gas water heater, some lessons though
Replaced an old mains gas storage heater with an Rinnai Infinity 26 with controllers to set temp. Great news is my gas consumption fell 90% (not a typo).
Some lessons though.
Had to replace the mains gas line into the property to a larger size, ie less gas consumed but at a much higher rate.
Low flow taps/shower heads appear to confuse the heater (hence some poor reviews i guess), solution is to turn on hot tap much more seems to solve problem.
Have had the unit for almost two years, faultless and highly recommended.
However, given the cost of gas main replacement and gas retailers quarterly connection fee, it would have been more cheaper to go LPG option. QLD fee is almost $100 per quarter plus my $10 gas usage.

Absolutely hate it!
Absolutely terrible HWS. Wastes ridiculous amounts of water to heat up, goes cold during showers several times per shower. Have to turn off cold and leave hot water to heat up during shower after already wasting water and time to heat up in first place. Deters the household from even wanting to shower regularly as it is not a relaxing experience whatsoever.

Hot and Cold
Our B20 unit is 16 months old and it is satisfactory in all respects except for our shower. In a 3 or 4 minute shower it runs cold 2 or 3 times. The instruction book says to increase the hot water flow but it is already at near its maximum. It is very frustrating as out old tank system never caused a problem in 16 years.

Do not get any system like this
Point 1: this system will not provide unlimited hot water, unless you use a high flow shower head. Using the ones they claim are compatible (see point 2) will result in hot water cutting in and out, giving you a hot-then-freezing-cold-then-hot-then-freezing-cold-etc shower that makes you want to tear the pipe out of the wall and beat the hell out of the salesperson who told you how great this system is.
They lied.

ot. I have told my husband to get it done because stuffed if I'm putting up with this crap for the next decade or so. But I can almost guarantee you guys will say "it's the shower heads" when IT ISN'T. I got you guys to tell me what flow we need, and we have that. I have the screenshot of you saying 7L/min to 9L/min. We were using 9L/minute but now have to use much higher. On and off since its gone in
The hot water takes ages to come through, I'm on bottled gas no flow restrictors anywhere. Been like this since it went in. Plumber not helpful at all. It sometimes works after been thumped on the outside of unit.

Exceptional hot water unit
I have read a few reviews regarding instantaneous hot water units – I truly feel that everyone needs to understand how an instantaneous unit operates. I would recommend that you get a plumber to inspect the plumbing (pipe size) installed around your house – this due diligence will ensure that you do not end up getting an unsuitable unit installed.

Fantastic unit
Our unit has been running flawlessly for the past 5 years. I installed controllers next to our showers + kitchen and the kids love having easy control of their shower temp. Energy efficient - Gas bill is nice and low - although installation was high (thick copper gas pipes).
Temperature fluctuation is minor when say the washing machine and/or dishwasher kicks in while you're showering, but it's still warm enough and it very rarely happens. On the flip side, you don't run out of hot water (except during a power outage)!
In all, no regrets and would install again.

The unit is perfect. When it works.
Installed in October 2018, worked fine some of the time, until winter when it now works about 2 hours a day at lunchtime. Sometimes it works in one shower and not the other, or sometimes nowhere fat all for a few hours. Fine over summer. Now, I've had the installer out 3 times, then referred to Rinnai. So, no hot water for 3 days now, but apparently someone will come out in 2 days time so, yay. My family of 2 adults and 3 kids aren't needing a warm shower with day temperatures of between 10-16 degrees. 3 calls today to Rinnai, still waiting to hear back from the manager, 5 hours and counting....

days without hot water because your service providers were too busy and that I couldn’t get another repairman out and be covered by the warranty. When I wished to discuss this with someone senior I left 2 messages which weren’t returned until after the gas supply was fixed. too much wasted water
its called instant heat-its a B16- yet it doesn't get to 49 that its set at, not until its wasted 10 to 15 litres in my kitchen- and 20 to 25 litres, in my bathroom- so every day im wasting from 80 to 100 litres now, when on sustainability Victoria says we use an average of 60 litres per day-at a cost of 167 per year, per person, compared to $230 pa, with the bigger gas water unit, system, i got this- B16 to save- cause i was losing 40 litres a day with the big gas unit- now im losing close to a 100 litres a day, and I've got to wait ages, and...Read more
its not hot enough to even wash dishes, and I've got to watch cold, to warm water, go down the sink every time, it's very disturbing, and in my opinion, your company should be disclosing that wasted water information, and telling people it will cost more, not less, than a normal water unit because it wastes so much- even if i turn the hot water tap off for 30 seconds, it starts cold again, and wastes another 4,5 or 6 litres again, driving me crackers it is, think im just going to put my old hot water system back again, but to me its very close to false advertising, im pretty sure, confident, that's how a judge would see it too, but whether i could be bothered or not is another story, either way though, you should be telling the people buying them what their actually going to get, and how much waste "this so called instant hot water system wastes", not what you get, after the, "waste", your not talking about.Purchased in March 2021 at Burson.

Poor customer service with Rinnai
Had an issue with faulty value on solar hot water unit which we only had for 15 months. Tried to call Rinnai to book technician to fix problem ASAP however was on hold for 30 mins and couldn't get through so had no choice to go with independent plumber. Still had faulty value available and a massive water bill because of this. As we didn't use Rinnai's technician, this apparently void the warranty. It is appalling Rinnai not prepared to compensate us nor contribute to the cost of the massive water bill. In future will not support Rinnai products.

Terrible temperature and flow
In the summer months it's OK but when it get cold the temperature at best the water is Luke warm and the flow is terrible.
I have had your Tech guy out charged me $190 to say it's not the unit it's the gas company flow from the street they came out said the gas Flow is fine .
I have had the plumber out 3 times thinking he could help he has seen what is happening but can't find anything .
This happened last winter we couldn't afford to call your tec guys again as her said it will cost again now winter here again and here we go again like warm shower again.
So frustrating wish I had money to buy a new brand.

Not hot enough
Our water has never been hot enough. Can wash hair on all hot and hold hand under hot water at kitchen sink. Kitchen sink is close to the unit. Have to boil a kettle for wash up water. How can the temperature be raised please?

Works great..until it doesn’t. No service from Rinnai
2 months before end of warranty our water heater dies. No shower, no washing, nothing. Still cannot get Rinnai to answer a phone. Plumber says it has corroded. Outdoor unit dead after Andre 3 years.Buying BOSCH next time.

Rinnai Touch C1 fault
So on Sat night for no reason the unit stopped working. Kept giving a C1 fault code which is not even listed in the Rinnai install manual or troubleshooting guide. Called Rinnai and operator was clueless. Took all my details at 8am Monday, but when I called back at 4.30pm Monday they hadn’t even logged the job and sent it to a plumber ffs. I found details of the C1 fault on this site and ended up fixing it myself. Remote control needed calibration wth. Fix your install and fault finding manual Rinnai and fix your service. Hopeless.

I have no hot water and can't get a service call.
I have called four times today and had two return calls "to see what I Wanted" and all I want to do is book a service Call! How hard is that?

Not happy with Rinnai B20 unit.
Just recently moved into a new build with a Rinnai B20 50degC unit installed. This is my first experience with continuous flow hot water and I would say that the “B type” builders special units are not as good as a hot water storage unit and I wouldn’t recommend it over a storage type as the hot water temperature can’t be controlled effectively when showering as the minimum flow rate is too high to have a warm shower with a 9L/min shower head as the minimum flow rate on the B20 is 2.4L/min from what I have read which means nearly 1/3rd of the w...Read more
ater needs to be hot water which doesn’t work when you just want a warm shower in summer and not a hot shower. This means you effectively have to run the tap as straight hot to “pre-charge” the pipe in between with hot water and then turn it down to the temperature you want for a couple of minutes before the water in the pipe runs out and then swing it back to straight hot again to fill the hot water pipe again. Not my idea of an enjoyable shower. The standard infinity units are probably better as the minimum flow rate rate on these is only 1.5L/min from what I’ve read but it begs the question as to why weren’t the “B type” builders units fitted with the same flow rate switch as the standard infinity unit or is it just a marketing ploy to keep the standard units sales for end user purchases (where the sale is actually analysed and compared against other heating units) and sell “B type” units to project builders who only care about the price and where the end user usually has minimal to no input into the purchasing decision. If so Rinnai are actually doing themselves a big disservice as people will only associate the brand with being unreliable in any new build home where the builders units are fitted and when those people are looking to input into the decision (and they will in the future if they have had issues with their existing unit) they won’t be looking at Rinnai.1 comment

Very happy with our Unit, would definitely purchase another!
We purchased ours in 2012 and love our unit. I love being able to adjust the temperature and know my kids and visitors aren't going to get burnt . Great space saver also for the side of our house. We will definitely be looking to purchase another when we move into our new home next month.

i wish i would have purchased a rinnai infinity years before i did.
I purchased a rinnai infinity 26 lpg 60 (6) years ago it is and has been the best (in all respects) hot water system I have ever owned and I have owned a lot over (50) years.
I expect it will not last forever but there is not much that does.
It fired up perfectly the first time it was turned on and has been used a lot in (6) years and keeps on keeping on.
Cheap to run.

this happened to me too!
Finally got a service person to visit and the fan unit is faulty and has to be replaced. Is yours the brand new design with the dark grey contrast sides? Mine is. Service person says a few of these hard a faulty fan unit. Hopefully the replacement with fix it.

buy this most recent model model. Hunt around for an older one. My friends and relatives with earlier Rinnai instantaneous water heaters have much quieter machines, so i have gone from a happy Rinnai user [ my old 26 was Rinnai ] to a NOT happy user.Similar opinion?
