My milk is always so bubbly when I steam it with the machine. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong I’ve tried all of the hints and tips. I’m after that glossy smooth finish. I’m wondering if the wand is the issue? Is it too short and wide?

Hi,
I bought a smeg coffee machine 4 weeks ago. I am having trouble pulling coffee thru, I get a dribble of the coffee isn’t extremely coursely ground or I tamper it too hard, which isn’t that hard at all.
Twice I have bought coffee beans ground & had to take them back because they were ground too fine for the coffee machine, even tho I told the barrister it’s a home espresso. They’re actually surprised it’s not pulling the coffee thru at the grind they’re giving me & surprised at how course I need it.
Also if I tamper it with just the slightest pressure it won’t pull thru. It’s also almost impossible to pull a 2 cup thru as there’s too much coffee in, it’s a dribble. I’ve gone thru 3 bags & continuing to play around with it but beginning to think there’s a problem with the pressure? Should this be happening?
Because I’m not giving pressure to the tamper, I’m not knocking out a biscuit either, it’s a coffee slush I scrape out with a spoon. Surely something’s wrong?
Thanks,
Michele

Thank you for your enquiry regarding your Smeg Coffee machine. We would suggest that you trial the Vittoria coffee range, readily available from your supermarket. This is the brand that we use on all of our demonstrations as well as TVSN. We find that the coffee grind on this particular brand is suitable for our machines. If this works, then there could be a variance with the coffee grind compared to the Vittoria brand and you would have to request that he grind be altered. Please do not hesitate to contact us should you have any further enquiries. Kind Regards, SMEG AUSTRALIA

We have the same issue. There's lots of different coffees out there and I don't have access to Vittoria, nor do I know if it's particularly tasty. We buy a coffee that has a bio-degradable bag but the fine blend is also 'too fine'despite being for espresso machines.

Can you please give us some kind of idea of how fine is too fine if we were to buy a grinder?

Hi LaniF,
We suggest trying not to pack the coffee in too hard. Also try using one of the other filter baskets/cups.

What descaling solution is recommended to use? Instructions say to only use a solution recommended by Smeg but I can't find this written anywhere in instructions or on website.
Love this machine by the way.

I am struggling to set the temperature. I want to select "hot". Each time I push the one cup button to try to select the settings menu, the machine starts dispensing one cup of coffee. I'm sure I'm doing something silly as nobody else seems to had this issue ! Any ideas? Thanks so much.

I can't get the steam frothing light to come on at my first use of this machine. The other 2 indicator lights are on, but not the steam light.

If I try to use the steam knob on the side of the machine to dispense steam, a loud throbbing sound occurs and no stream comes out.

Any ideas?

When I turn my machine on the two coffee cup lights blink then eventually stay solid. The steam light stays off until I push it, then it blinks before staying solid. (Meanwhile the coffee lights go out. ). Now your steam should work, and froth the milk.
When finished frothing I then turn the steam light OFF and place an empty jug under the wand and pull the lever until steam stops coming out then return lever to upright again. This cools the machine down and the coffee cup lights then stay solid, ready for use.
Hope this helps.
I bought my machine from tvsn after watching it in use for an hour, really learnt a lot that way.

I am not a technician but I will try to help. When your first turn on the machine the one & two cups lights flash until machine is ready to use (about 10-30secs). Make your coffee, now press the steam light, it will flash for a few seconds, when it stops place empty jug under steamer, move steamer arm forward to the Steam symbol to allow initial release of water, then move lever back. Now place your jug with milk under the spout and move lever into steam position, froth your milk (use a thermometer for best temp. control) Close steamer, wipe clean and turn steam light OFF, place an empty jug under steam spout and pull lever into position till steam stops, return to closed position. I hope this helps. Also if you can find the TVSN video it is well worth watching. Good info on how to use your machine as well as some really nice ideas for variations in coffee drinking.

Thanks for your v helpful replies - I now have no trouble with this part of the process.

However (embarrassing, but true!) I do find it difficult to fit the coffee holder under the machine itself - i.e. to line up the holder with the arrows and try to lock it into the machine.
I had no trouble the first time, but second day, I couldn't get it in. My son had a go and had to virtually manhandle the thing into place at the arrows, i.e. using force to lock it in.

Can you please tell me why I can froth my first cup ok but when I froth my second cup the steam stops and I have to reset the steam? This is very frustrating.

Rodney M.Smeg

Hi Mike J,
If you wait longer than 30 seconds between frothing jugs of milk, the unit will ask you to cool it down ( two coffee buttons flashing) or if you want to use the steam function again, you will need to press the steam button. Once you press the steam button, there is no delay to steam another jug of milk.
Hope this helps.
