Fault with paddle-pan connection
Have had this unit for not quite 2 years and not cooked many loaves at all. When it works it is fine but we frequently have a loaf that fails to mix and rise properly and find the paddle has come off the during mixing at some stage even though it is placed on and upright when ingredients are added. It is not a firm or tight fit to start with.

Inferior to older model: noisy as anything, burn myself removing bread
I've owned a previous Sunbeam model for more than 15 years (the cooltouch bakehouse) and was very happy with it. I've only let it go because after a move, the bake cycle began tripping the circuit breaker so I could only use it for dough. Given I was so happy with Sunbeam before, I bought this model. What a mistake.
Firstly, the old bakehouse tin went in with a simple quarter twist. This one has clips that you have to push the tin into and pull it out of. They are so tight that I struggle to do it, and when the breakmaker is hot at the end o...Read more
f the cycle, I've burned myself several times trying to get enough leverage to pull it out, and putting it in, end up pushing buttons on the control panel which means I have to reset it. Very unhappy about that. Secondly, it's so noisy!! The old bakehouse had a plastic housing that was not only cool to touch, but insulated the noise. This one with its metal case might look schmick, but is super loud when mixing, and when the fruit/nut dispenser goes, wow! It would wake the whole house. What's the point of having a delay if you can't possibly run it overnight because it would wake people? I have a small baby and my old unit could run without disturbing anyone. This one has already woken bub on both occasions I've used it. On the plus side, I do like the collapsible blade, and the option to do a 500g loaf (as well as 750g and 1kg). But otherwise, its a terrible step backwards. I will be seeking a refund.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

A very good machine BM4500
a better loaf, brilliant result although finding it hard how to tackle the loaf, cutting wise. Now if I cut the dome first to make it square at the side, then continue there to fit in toaster. Have used ready made mix now to try a recipe somewhere in this survey

Waste of time
Have tried to make various types of bread. Have followed the instructions carefully due to the warning you must measure the ingredients. Have made sure the paddle is upright. Bread, if you can call it that is hard lump 9 out of 10 times. Waste of my time. Bought so my daughter and I could enjoy freshly made bread without all the preservatives. Will be taking it back and I don't normally do that.

Getting the best from your Bakehouse
Update 5/5/18. I've just discovered that if you want to avoid the fiddling about needed to make dough from the basic ingredients (flour, margarine, salt, milk powder, brown sugar, bread improver all carefully measured out) you can use the Bakehouse to make dough from bread mix, e.g. Lauke or Lighthouse. Saves a bit of time and a lot of concentration! Let it stand for 30 minutes and put in 200 degree oven for thirty minutes. Results, excellent.
Update 27/6/16. I've since discovered that the best way to get consistent results is to use the bread...Read more

We've had this machine for two years now, baking many loaves a week. It bakes a perfect loaf pretty much every single time, I couldn't fault it!
I don't know why people are having problems with the folding blade, if you pour the flour in reasonably carefully it'll stay up every time. I also sometimes use the butter to wedge it upright if needed.
All I all though, it's a very reliable breadmaker!

Couldn't agree more
I have been making the most perfect bread using this machine. Gee I'm glad I didn't read the reviews here first. Keeping the floppy paddle up is easy. Just pour the flour in so that it keeps it up. I use it for pizza dough a lot and get the perfect pizza crust. My only complaint is that the paddle rubs against the baking chamber, which is non-stick and has rubbed a half circle of the non-stick surface off. I even bought a second chamber and it's done the same with that.

Design fault with the blade
today was my third attempt - blade won't stay upright and collapses - did not see any doughy ball happening just a flat rock hard doughy lump - had no trouble with my previous breadmaker. Would rather have the hole in the bottom of the bread as the second loaf it made I had to dig out the blade out of the inside of the bread.
Will take back to Harvey Norman's tomorrow

Bread does not rise
I bought this breadmaker and it blew a fuse in the house, after this the element did not work. The bread rose beautifully but did not cook. So I took it back for replacement. The bread does not rise properly in the replacement machine. I am left with small bricks, half the size they should be, and the texture is very bad. I have tried careful measuring, using white bread on wholemeal settings, and a shop-bought commercial bread mix. None of them work. I have tried now about ten times and each time the bread has been really bad. I used to have a...Read more
Breville before this and I could use both commercial mixes and recipes from the book, everything worked fine. I really don't feel like trundling this machine back to the shop but I suppose I will have to. Very disappointed.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Terrific Breadmaker
My old Lumina breadmaker eventually died after several years of producing at least 3 loaves per week. The only problem I had with the Lumina were the holes left in the bottom of the loaf by the paddles. This time I wanted to try a breadmaker with retracting paddles. We decided on the Sunbeam Bakehouse because it was not too expensive and had a single retracting paddle. I started off by following the white and wholemeal recipes in the book that came with the machine. Very disappointing, the consistency all wrong, which meant I would have had to ...Read more
experiment with water, and flour quantities. (At over 4 hours per loaf, that becomes very tiresome.) I then tried my regular wholegrain recipe I'd used with the old machine, and bingo, a perfect loaf! Beautifully light and fluffy (better than it ever was from the Lumina), and no holes in the bottom. I could not be happier! Retracting Paddle The recipes in the book did not make good bread.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

I think I know why so many people are getting dud results with this machine. It's the stupid folding blade. It's supposed to be clever and not leave a hole in your loaf, but it flops down when you dump the flour in. Once you've added all the ingredients, dig your fingers down and make sure the blade is standing upright. If you leave the blade flopped down you end up with a brick. This method worked alright for me for almost two years, but now the blade just flops down randomly during the cycle. I've had four dud loaves in a row.
The other t...Read more
hing I don't like is how loud it is. Even though it has a time delay function, we haven't been able to wake up to fresh bread because it wakes the entire house. I would recommend spending a bit more and getting something decent I bought it mostly for its small size. Why does it need to continue beeping for ages once the bread is done? Two beeps would suffice to let you know.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Perfect result first time!
After reading the reviews on here I initially regretted that I hadn't checked this page prior to buying, but thought I would follow the instructions and have a go anyway. I measured accurately, followed the advice and recipes from the instruction manual and am absolutely delighted with the results. Perfectly risen, texture, taste. I'm extremely happy and very glad now that I hadn't read this page first!
Efficiency, and ease of use
Nothing so far

Bring back the old Sunbeam! This one is so "clever" that it's stupid!
I've been making bread for 16 years, the last three in the old Sunbeam. I could adjust the automatic settings and save them which was so handy. I had to give it up, it was still working fine.
This machine is automatic so you can't adjust anything and a loaf of wholemeal takes over 4 hours! I followed the recipe for 1 kg and decided on the turbo as it was quicker. The loaf was tiny (only 500g flour) and somewhat over-cooked.
Next I tried the gluten free, followed the recipe exactly and had to remove the loaf 38 minutes early as it was alre...Read more

Waste of money, horrible bread!
Glad I'm not the only one whose having trouble with this bread maker. Bought it a week ago, made one small, okay-ish loaf, the rest have been duds. Its like the kneading blade just lies flat the whole time. It doesnt mix in the ingredients at all! Have watched it in the kneading phase and nothing happens. We have meticulously measured and weighed out all the ingredients, so are at a loss as to what we are doing wrong. So disappointed. Even the 'fool-proof' recipes online havent worked. We are returning this item on the weekend. It sucks. DONT BUY IT!
Sleek design, but what good is that if it doesnt make bread?!!
Expensive and doesnt work properly. Recipe book it comes with is rubbish

Worst bread machine ever !!!!!!
This bread machine is horrible!! I used my Sanyo bread maker for 15 years, it was perfect every time even when I didn't measure everything properly! I just got this machine yesterday and have made 3 loaves !! All disasters, horribly overcooked even though I have it on the lightest setting!! They are just not edible !! I am so disappointed with it, has anyone had any luck returning their machine ????
It looks good

Great bread maker - a real workhorse in our house
I use this machine several times a week as nothing beats homemade bread. The main reason I purchased this machine was the collapsible blade/paddle feature. Nobody likes the hole in the bottom of the loaf you get with other machines. Also its design/colour looks very smart on a modern kitchen bench. It also has a nifty timer feature so you can wake up to the heavenly smell of fresh bread baking. Another great feature is the nut dispenser, that I’m yet to use. Great with store bought bread mixes also and for pizza dough. I even used the...Read more

Awful
this machine is a disaster. I am very careful to measure the ingredients precisely, follow the recipe instructions to the letter, yet I get more disasters than successes. out of 5 batches of bread making only 1 was a success. I would not recommend buying this product. it doesn't complete the cycle and suddenly cuts out mid way.
nice stainless steel outer
to complex to use.

I bought the BM 4 weeks ago. I have tried several times with the basic recipes but no success, heavy and collapsed loaves as a result. I feel totally disappointed with the BM . I phoned several times but they tell me I am outside hours and I am calling at 1pm! I want to return this machine for failing to produce what it promises.

It’s a rubbish machine mate, I made the mistake of purchasing one as well and it was the biggest waste of money! I had the same problems you’re having right now.
I just took my machine back to the retailer and paid an extra $40 for a Panasonic SD-2501 And I swear I was amazed by the first life that came out of the machine it was absolutely perfect, trust me it’s not you it’s definitely the machine!!

HI, I have recently purchased the BM4500 and bought some premix online as the supermarkets are all sold out. Only problem is, there are no instructions, what else do I need to add to the premix e.g. improver, milk powder, salt etc (obviously water & yeast) and in what quantities. I have a grain mix & a white mix. Have messaged seller but no reply as yet. Thanks

Yes, the folding blade is an OK idea in theory, terrible implementation. Who cares if there's a hole in the loaf?
