Not the most reliable car
This car has been disappointing - within the first 6 months of purchase the DSG gearbox decided to make some weird noises like a squealing noise - complained to the service department and a fault was lodge only to find that the clutch packs were damaged and required replacement. The replacement took 2 days thank goodness I was provided a loan vehicle.
Fast forward to 2 years - I would randomly drive and an error message would pop up on my dashboard which was so fast that I wasn't able to read it - took it in to get the error message scanned...Read more
- it picked up that my gear selector was faulty and throwing an electrical fault to the on board computer thinking that my car was in P whilst it was in motion. Had to get the entire unit replaced - thankfully under warranty otherwise it would have cost over $2K I would not recommend this car if you are planning to buy and keep the car for a long period of time such as over 6-10 years - if you are salary packaging or leasing it then why not - the car does drive well and comfortable - it has plenty of power and is very fuel efficient it is also a very refined car in it's category and feels very solid even at high speeds and in heavy wind and rain. You will also feel very secure to know that it is a very safe car and even safer if you bundle it with the safety pack. Overall - only purchase this car if you are willing to fork out money for repairs or if you are planning to lease it or have it for a short term. Not a good choice if you are looking for a long term durable vehicle.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

absolutely loving this car
bought my golf in Aug 17 and absolutely loving it.
it feels sporty and powerful. Interior feels very quality and comfort.
so far I have had any issue with it other than car key battery life is bit short. within a year, I have both batteries replaced for both keys.
Start is just a little bit sluggish but I guess coz of turbo engine. it is not as quite as I expect on a bit of bumpy roads but on high way it breezes thru.

Great car - not perfect but I love it.
I really like this car. It feels sporty and has heaps of features that add to the comfort levels. I particularly like the heated leather seats, the steering wheel with lots of buttons that work the audio/entertainment/information system, the reversing camera and parking assistance system, as well as the overall look of the car. It is really economical.
One thing I don't like is how hesitant it feels when entering roundabouts or when I want to quickly turn across traffic. I assume the hesitation is a consequence of a fuel efficiency measure but...Read more

Biggest mistake of my life.
After getting promoted, I celebrated by buying a new Golf R, I spared no expense and was bowled over by the many test drives I completed. Everything was going well until the first service, keep in mind I’m a trained mechanic and pilot, but had to use them for warranty reasons - for the next year it was in and out, new turbos, new parts, leaks, electronics that would freeze and stutter and then it flat out wouldn’t start. Fair to say they don’t like the Aussie heat much, even so, rubbish car for the price.

Great car, drives well and is good on fuel.
The performance of this car is amazing, for a 4 cylinder 1.4L turbo car it is very zippy, the only downside I have found performance wise is the car is a bit slow to respond when you put your foot on the accelerator. The interior of the car looks and feels streamline and has easily accessible features whilst driving. The value for money in regards to fuel is good, roughly 800km out of a tank on premium fuel.

good build but disappointing drive at low speed
The Golf is a bit overrated. It's build quality is good and strong acceleration in mid-range, but at low-speed, the DSG and turbo lag often caused delay of up to 1 second from the time I step on the gas to the time that the car started to speed up. When the power comes, it is a rough surge and a jerky ride. On many occasions, entering round-about was scary because of this delay. The auto-hold is also annoying because it holds not only up-hill, but in all situations when the car stops. It means that in heavy traffic, just releasing the brak...Read more
e won't edge the car forward, but I have to step on the gas and then a hard brake just to move the car forward a short distance. In the end, I decided not to use it at all. On the other hand, I really like the cornering light because it is really useful at night. I would have kept the car if not for the disappointing low-speed handling. Now I am trading it for another brand.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Love my golf
I own a 2015 golf. Purchased it brand new from the dealer and have never had a better car. Was my first time downsizing since the kids moved out and very happy to have such a reliable and quality small car. Much easier to get around than the big station wagon I used to own.

2015 tsi. Unacceptable turbo lag and bizarre reverse camera screen
Amazed at the glowing reviews for what it just another small car.
The positives: Golf continues to have great handling, fit and finish generally good and attractive looks. Apple CarPlay is awesome.
The not so positive : controls are not as intuitive as older models (had an early 2000's 2 litre Golf and control layout was obvious and easy to use). It's a personal thing but I can't stand the engine management system and hate that it operates by default. IE if you don't like it you have to turn it off every time you start the car. Nice car but don’t get fooled
I own 2014 be golf 90 tsi.. bought it brand new from the dealer..Very nice car to drive, superb handling, cosy cabin, everything looks luxurious, big boot, nice touch screen, however, it has numerous issues: 1) turbo lag. Especially city driving 2) expensive to fix problems I terms of parts 3) expensive service annually around $400 minimum, 4) big issue with DSG..and if your has transmission filaure while your warranty is over then it would be really exp to fix.( mine had issue in transmission after 2 year..)Hence, I wouldn’t recommend especially any second hand purchase as well as brand new..hope this helps and I don’t work for any car companies..

2014 VW Golf is pretty good
Ive been happy so far with the 2014 VW golf. Petrol version. Drives powerfully, comfortable, quite cheap to run on long distances. No problems so far, but I am a bit concerned that repairs will be pricey when or if something goes wrong. I think I would go with Toyota or Mazda or Subaru next time.

Love my car
I really really enjoy my car and the driving experience I have. The performance is great, I get 850 kms to the tank when I drive around town/ on the highway. It is amazing. I dislike that I got the basic model in terms of the material as it does stain easily. I think its a great sized car and it is extremely reliable. All in all, great car!

Great car to drive
It's fast, looks very stylish, sounds great especially when driving through a tunnel. The fuel usage is definitely not bad at all. Very comfortable to sit in for long periods, having Android Auto/CarPlay is a god send in this day and age. It handles very well, takes corners without any issues. Only issues I have is the USB port in the dash is a bit awkward to plug things into and feels a tad loose. Also not a huge fan of the seat cover pattern.

Great stylish city car
The car is easy and pleasant to drive. Fuel efficiency is great. The European build is solid. I haven’t had any problems with my car since buying it new in 2013. The interior highline package looks high end and costs no extra with the 103TSI engine, unlike most other competitor models. Legroom and boot space are good too.

Feature Packed but Unreliable
Overall this car is a neat little package, packed full of features for the price. The cabin is low, wide and quiet which results in quality ride comfort and superior handling. The Golf boast of solid German build quality yet is lightweight and very fuel efficient. It's still roomy enough to have a comfortable back seat and a very generous boot. The interior is exceptionally stylish and the center console has some very useful features. Unfortunately with all the advanced technology on board, reliability has been a major let down. I have had a nu...Read more
mber of problems with the DSG gearbox, some fixed under warranty but very expensive to repair when they occurred out of warranty. In hindsight, I would have preferred a more basic and reliable ride. The fancy tech still needs the kinks to be straightened out.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Efficient, zippy and luxury
This car is really comfortable to drive, its quiet and steers really well. The seats and interiors have been really well thought out with clever features such as reverse and front sensors to assist with no accidental bumps, the locking system that also closes your windows. Its fuel efficient and has a zippy powerful kick in its drive.

Does what it says on the tin - a timeless car
Our first ever new car, we took advantage of a 1.0% finance deal from VW that meant it was actually cheaper for us in the long-run to buy a new car on finance rather than take out a loan to buy a second hand car a few years old. First thing you notice about the Golf is that the styling is conservative, but timeless - you see a Golf 10 or 20 years old and they look good for their age. Behind the wheel the car is surprisingly gutsy for it's specifications (1.4L Turbo), with the 6-speed manual box taking some time to get used to before coming into...Read more
its own. Firm but comfortable ride, with good brakes that I've had to slam on a couple of times to avoid errant motorists. Offerings from Kia or Hyundai may be better spec'ed, but the 92TSI still has enough bells and whistles to play with. Reversing camera, parking sensors and Apple CarPlay are the highlights - hard to imagine driving a car without these features now. All up a fantastic, smooth, reliable, car.Similar opinion? Good family car, easy to drive
The car driving experience is very smooth, the car itself is lightweight so it is very responsive to turns and maneuvers. The interior is nice, with real leather grain seats and overall minimal plastic, but some of the doors and also the front dash is all the ugly rigid plastic, which ruins the aesthetic of the car. Overall, would recommend as an entry-level family car due to is ease to drive.

Great first car.
I have a manual comfort line golf and it is very easy to drive and handle. The engine is very quiet compared to other cars and the windows and overall body are very soundproof and block out outside noise. The interior is very comfortable and the dashboard is easy to read. I dislike the manual winding that is required when adjusting the seat though.
It is very reliable but service prices are quite high and it only takes 95 and above fuel, so it can be quite costly at times. However, it is a great car and I am very happy with it.

Incredible value for money!
I have nothing bad to say about this car! Performance wise I could not fault it. I have a golf 2.0L TDI and when you push on the accelerator, you can feel the torque without feeling it struggle. Very sporty feel with a nice to handle steering wheel. Noise is pretty well insulated so you can't hear the engine noise that loudly. The interior is awesome for a relatively budget compact car and feels sporty yet luxurious. The interior is much better looking than the relatively simple exterior design. My favourite part is the entertainment system. Ev...Read more
en if you don't pay extra for voice control, the system is compatible with android auto and the apple version too, which allows you to still activate voice command from the steering wheel. Quite a reliable car so far and for a little bit extra than a similar Japanese compact car, you feel like you get a lot more out of it. I drive the car quite a lot but refuel once a fortnight and it's 50L of diesel so quite affordable to runSimilar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Best car I have ever driven!
Interior is definitely my favourite even in the comfort line. The dashboard comes with the large screen so it is easy for my eyes. I have a 2016 golf comfort line, auto. The car drives very smooth on the road, excellent great on fuel. The running cost is very cheap for a student like me!

Questions & Answers
Mr. Fix itasked
Has anyone had a remote control car key die and found any alternative to paying the $620 VW want for a new one please? My car is a 2016 Golf TDI, auto Mark 7
Thank you, John.

Good luck John. In my experience, VW are not helpful and are very expensive. My golf does not have a remote key but you would think they would have a battery that could be replaced as other remote devices do. Maybe that’s just another way VW makes more money.
Thanks Meredith but I have changed the battery and it still doesn't work. Looks like it needs a new internal PCB.
Thanks anyway, regards John.

My car is a 2016 TDI Golf hatchback Highline. Could you please tell me if it is a mrk 6 or 7 and also the windscreen dimensions? Thanks.

Logically check your manual or sales doco first
Hi Sandra. I have just needed to find an answer to the same question. I've been through all the documentation including service book, sales dockets etc. and came up blank. A good Google search provided the answer. The easy answer is ... if you have rounded tail lights, it's Mk 6, if they are sharp edged design, Mk 7. Mark 7 also has the sophisticated "Infotainment System" with GPS and lots of other choices (radio, car, menu etc.) in the middle of the dash.
Regards, John.
