Good car - for the first 12 months
I have purchased my Tiguan TDI in 2009 brand new. The first 12 months of ownership have been in eventful. The car is comfortable, drives great and aside from a small boot its quite spacious.
Unfortunately in the following three years of ownership the car proved rather costly with numerous expensive problems.
From faulty sensors, blocked particle filter, to blown turbo and blown starter motor. Its rare that i get any change from $1000 when i take my car to a vw workshop. All parts are priced at a premium.
The most recent service - brake disc...Read more

Very nice car. Handles like a sports car but the downside to this is very firm suspension which makes the ride a bit uncomfortable at times. We have the 2.0 litre TDI diesel manual and the fuel economy is as good as a Toyota Yaris. Interior quality is superb. Has plenty of power for overtaking. The only thing I don't like is the design of the gear selector. If you aren't careful you can select reverse gear instead of first. Have taken off backwards from a couple of red lights (luckily nobody behind me). An aural warning when selecting reverse would be a good idea.
Build quality, handling, fuel economy, safety features
Firm suspension, gear selector

Tiguan Diesel
Bought a 2011 6spd Manual Diesel, great handling, very quiet ride, trouble free motoring and I get 950 to 1000 klms on a tank of diesel, can't complain about that. Very comfortable to drive on long trips also.
Rear passengers comment on the amount of legroom in the back and the seating comfort.
Cheap to run, very comfortable to drive

Poor ride quality and poor customer service
Purchased a 2.0 tdi in April 2012. At delivery car had 60 psi in tyres. This is shipping pressure that dealer did not even check before handover. Suspension turned out to be way to harsh for Melbourne roads. After 6 months, a bad smell came through ventilation, and dsg started shifting roughly, blue tooth does not switch off after leaving the vehicle sometimes. this was not fixed. One day mistakenly put 8 liters of petrol in diesel tank, but realised mistake and did not start vehicle, towed to dealer. vortex diesel/vortex premium. in a hurry, r...Read more
ead vortex.Understandably, tank would require flushing. however dealer rings next week, fuel pump has failed, extra 550 AUD, 3 weeks wait bcz no parts in stock. how does fuel pump fail without starting the vehicle? on ringing vw to query this failure and the wait, i was told "well next time you'll know not to do it again". simple mistake.....massive cost........condescending service. VW, Change the fuel pump design and use the same filler plate like ford . I will be selling as soon as possible, you are arrogant and overrated.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!
Never again
I purchased my tdi auto in 2010 . It is used for business and has done 117823 ks. The car is on its 3d transmission and i have had ongoing problems with the pollution control and the coolant. Vw has been excellent and have given me replacement cars while parts are flown in but the local dealer is awful. It takes about a week on average to get a booking, they never seem to have the parts in stock or ring you when they have a problem . I have called in several times to pick up my car at the end of the day only to be told that it was not ready, ...Read more
on other times they could not find my booking. Once they told me that they could not work on it for a month but fixed it in 3 days when i came to take it to a out of town dealer. I have just got the car back after 2 weeks off the road because of a hole in a coolant hose only to have the coolant warning light come on again November 18th 2014 Update: I have a 2010 tiguan tdi . I am on my 3rd transmission, and have replaced, the radiator, all hoses, water pump, cruise control, all radio and horn electronics, egr valve and air conditioning compressor . The compressor and horn electronics cost around $4000.00 to repair .I tried to contact vw for some assistance as i had only pressed the horn about 3 times but they would not return my call . The car has always had regular servicing done . I had to wait several weeks for the 1st transmission to come from singapore but there were 6 in australia when the 2nd unit failed . You pay a premium to own and service these cars but i should have purchased a kia which gives a decent warranty . Good fuel economy Lack of spare parts, poor after sales service, long delay for service booking,2 comments

Jacked off - literally!!
We both have each over 30 years driving, the Tiguan sofar was our worst car.
We bought the Tiguan 2.0 TDI with automatic gearbox in 2009 after test driving a few SUV's. First we started off with two recalls for door looks and injector lines. After 2 years the radiator split in half, the car had to be picked up and sent to to the dealer for repair. After driving through a nail from the building site next door we found the car with two flat tyres on one side in the mornning in the garage. The car was then jacked up on the VW supplied jack. Very disappointed and last VW I will ever own
Our diesel Tiguan has been the worst vehicle we have ever owned. From the 1st month we have had mechanical, build quality and dealer issues. The turbo blew at 99000K and they wanted $4500 to repair it. 6 weeks of disagreeent reduced it to an $800 bill. The expensive roof racks have been replaced 3 times because the end caps just blow off. The dealer blames VW and of course VW blames the dealer. The air-conditioning is primitive and under powered. It is either hot or cold and cold takes 15mins. The parking sensors are intermittent. The servicing...Read more
and parts costs are obscene. Who charges $145.00 for 3 wiper blades? You are locked into VW oil. Fuses blow without reason. They can't/won't fix the sharp brakes that make it impossible to stop smoothly (They all do it I was told). If you are considering buying a VW Tiguan for a perception of "german build quality" I would argue it could be a costly mistake good on highway in traffice - like the riding position4 comments

The best SUV on the market!!
20/10!! The VW Tiguan is by far second to any other SUV on the market, after extensive research and I now enjoy the benefits of owning my own 103TDI DSG Tiguan I can honestly say that this SUV is an excellent drive, it is effortless, nippy and smooth and heaps of fun to drive!! It is versatile, compact but spacious and extremely easy to drive. The ergonomics of this vehicle are exceptional, everything is at your fingers tips yet there are no spaceship like buttons that seem to overcomplicate the dash. The fuel efficiency is amazing with the bluemotion technology! I'm getting 5.9L/100km- on my daily highway route to work- fantastic!!
Drives smoothly, reliable, safe, compact yet spacious, family loves it!!

2010 Diesel: Unreliable Tiguan, broken down twice
Unfortunately all the good with the car is washed away by reliability issues, towed to the dealer twice as wouldn't start. 5500 K's and noisy, whistling fan and pump noises.
Design, features & diesel efficiency
Unreliable, 2 break downs in last 1600K's

Great car
Purchased a diesel 6-speed automatic in June 2008 and have done 70,000 km so far. In general I've been very happy with the car but there were 2 significant problems identified when the car was 3 1/2 years old (and therefore out of warranty):
- defective remote key (dealer quote to fix was $227)
- intermittent failure of air conditioning to provide cool air (dealer quote to fix was $2,680).
To their credit, Volkswagen Australia agreed to fund most of the repairs as a "good will" gesture with me left to pay $24 for the key and $334 for the a...Read more

Brilliant little German
After wanting a Subaru Forester Diesel for some time, I had a chance to drive both it and the Tiguan. Wow, what a difference. The Germans make an exceptional vehicle. It feels solid, drives on the road like a Golf (test drove one to compare), corners almost as well as my beloved Peugeot it replaced, and looks elegant. What made me choose the Tiguan over the Forester was: 1) The plastics inside look and feel of higher quality than in the Suby, like they'd age well. 2) the Tiguan engine noise was quieter and gearbox smoother in changes than the S...Read more
uby. Fuel economy is awesome, I'm averaging 6.6l/100 so am only filling up once a month, unless I drive off sealed road...speaking of which, I ventured off the black top recently and was pleasantly surprised at the little Tiguan's ability to climb over steep rocky terrain. All it needs is a little lift and she'd be perfect! On corrugations it's smooth and comfortable as long as you're at about 100km/h or so. Fuel consumption does rise as the car works harder off road, but I'm sure that's expected. There's plenty of room for five adults depending on where you place them...I fit four domestic checked in luggage pieces in the boot, if you're good at Tetris and don't mind having the boot cover/parcel shelf sitting loosely on top of them. For those complaining of costs of extras...learn to haggle. I saved a bucket load off the list price. :-) Fuel economy, build quality, driving feel. Bloody space saver spare...on an AWD? Length of the iPhone/iPod cable...it's about 5cm shorter than it should be to allow phone to sit in cup holder spot...I know, I'm being picky!1 comment
Good review and I agree completely - I was looking at both of the same cars as yourself.
Had the Tiguan 2 months shy of 2 years and find the same positives and negatives.

Great car, looooooong wait.
I waited 4.5 months for my manual diesel Tig, but it was worth it.
I bought it for the safety rating, the fuel economy, and how it looked.
It drives really nicely, it's big enough without feeling like you're sailing the Titanic down the highway, and feels sturdy. Has never missed a beat. Am overall very happy with the Tigs.
My first one was written off in a crash (T-boned other car at 60km/h) with no injury other than seatbelt bruising, so am very happy with safety. Some nice touches - unlocked the child locks on the back doors, automatical...Read more

Great car slightly marred by silly details
Great little SUV with adequate space for my wife and I on country trips. Quiet highway cruising. Brilliant suspension on our bouncy country roads. The boot seems bigger than it looks. The rear seat accommodation is good with deep footwells. The front seats are woeful. I struggled to believe there is no adjustable lumbar support. I cut some high density foam cushions and slipped them under our after-market seat covers. These work well but should not be necessary on a $40,000 vehicle in 2011, especially after paying $1000 for a comfort pack!

he diesel has plenty of grunt, the gear changes are slick but the power delivery can be sudden around town. The economy is good but not as good as the computer would have me believe. The speedo and the fuel consumption figures are very optimistic. The computer showed 6.7 l/100km versus an actual 7.3 l/100km for highway cruising at a genuine 110km/hr (~116km/hr indicated) to WA & back. After 9500km the average consumption has been 7.5l/100km in mostly highway driving. The tow capacity is good for a car in this class. When loaded I appreciate the remote headlight adjustment. There is a good range of aftermarket bits available. I fitted a navigation radio but the shallow angle of the face often makes it hard to see due to the reflection from sunlight. For country driving, this class of vehicle is practical. An ordinary sedan would be damaged the first time it is driven on an outback gravel road, while a full sized 4x4 suits only those who claim their fuel as a tax deduction. Quiet highway cruiser with a quality feel. Brilliant suspension. Plenty of power, good economy. Poor front seat lumbar support, with no adjustment. Intrusive engine torque vibration at town speeds. Reflections from radio face.3 comments
Rolf, you mentioned you needed to add foam under seat covers to be comfortable. Assuming you have side air-bags, the covers will hinder correct deployment of the air-bags that are hidden in the side of the seats. So please remove them.

slates to, Scheiße-Kasten! This car must have been given to the idiot team to design. I own a Passat, which is a great car. The Tiguan suffers too many silly ideas that have ignored many of the learnings from cars made before it. Don't buy one! I can't wait to off load mine to some poor sod. The issues are so numerous it would be a waste of time transposing the spreadsheet I have composed, to this forum. I implore anybody reading this to look at some other car, you WILL be disappointed.Absolutely no reasons given Phip for your criticism. Just one generality lasting several lines. Pretty happy - miles better than anything else in class ie. subaru, honda and rav. 30,000 kms of mostly commuting has been pretty painless - but it's a squeeze to go away on the weekends - absolutely need the roof pod. Need a bigger boot. For what it is it's expensive to service - $700 for basically a change of fluids. In laws bought same but auto and this works better with 103kw diesel - manual is okay - and I'm not a fan of auto but have to admit the auto/diesel combo is a winner. Would I buy another? Without a bigger boot and without more en...Read more
gine options - probably not - most likely go for Q5 - more money but more space and better engine choices. Not a monster 4WD. Diesel offers good economy with acceptable performance. Handles well for what it is. Good accommodation space. Mostly pretty durable, well screwed together. Pity VW don't bring in the 125Kw diesel. Boot too small. All extras ridiculously expensive ie. towbar $1600. Some plastics fisher-price quality - ie rear cup holders - and they lasted about 3 months before breaking.Similar opinion? Whilst repairs like those are frustrating and unexpected especially within 3 years, may I just say that if an item is not under warranty it will be costly to go through the dealer.
t VW mechanic that uses genuine parts and diagnostics, there are plenty around, usually within places tagged as 'Eurpoean/Prestige Auto Service' centres or in my case 'German Auto Service Centre'. You can save hundreds easily if you shop around. They tend to pass any discount they get on parts more readily and in a larger % than the dealer and their labor fees are also less.Find an independan... Read more
