Hi Glenn,
What dose setting have you got the machine on? If your dose is too low it will have the same effect as coffee that is too coarse. Also check what temperature you have the machine on as well. Some coffee prefer a hotter temperature to give a thicker crema and a better taste.

The dose is right up to the line in the filter basket. I'll have to check on how to adjust the temperature. Thank you

My pleasure, you can have the dose a little passed the line and it should still fit into the machine this will help also.
here is a how to video that shows how to adjust the temp. The coffee temp starts at the 16 second mark.

My DeLonghi Specialista has a red error symbol on the machine. It only comes up sometimes and works normally until it shows up. Once its there I can't do anything and have to restart the machine. I called Delonghi and they can't help since I'm not in warranty. I would like to open it and fix it myself I just want to know if there's something I should look for when I open it just so I save some time.

Generally the warning lights come on because the machine is telling you that something needs to be done differently. It could be as simple as cleaning the grinder or making sure the tamp handle sits all the way back to reactivate the micro switch that turns off the grinder. It coul be you have an air bubble that needs to push through the water lines with the prime function. If you can please give me more information about which warning light is coming up I can help you with the fix.

When the bean light is flashing it means the bean container is not clicked in all the way till it is locked. You need to make sure it is pushed all the way around till it clicks. Here is a how to video to help you. if you look at the 54 second mark this will show you the bean container.

Hi, my machine is three months old. I have a stong odor coming from the water tank. I have cleaned it twice in the last week and the odor disappears temporarily however it returns after some use. This smell seems to tain the water and as a result has an impact on the taste of the espresso and more notcibly the steamed milk. Can you help?

Also, when I grind a double espresso at the lowest possible grind, it over fills the double cup in the portafilter to the point where after tamping I cannot fit it into the espresso machine.

Why doesn’t my pressure gauge even go into the optimum range? Have tried lots of different grinds but it barely touches optimum zone

Cheryl B.DeLonghi

Hey Sofia,
Try adding more dose this also affects the coffee pour if you dont have enough coffee in the handle then it will pour fast as well also if you aren't using freshly roasted and freshly stored coffee beans this can also have a huge affect on the coffee pour and flavour. At the end of the day though its all about what is in the cup. the gauge is just a guide so if you are happy with the coffee flavour dont make any adjustments.

Grind comes up the line on the inside of the handle. Beans definitely fresh. My worry is there is some sort of leak causing a loss of pressure especially with all the reviews about water leakage.

DeLonghi
Cheryl B.DeLonghi

Hey Sofia thanks for getting back to me,
If the handle fits you could still try putting more coffee in the handle to go just a little over the nodules. Also if you are changing the grind it must be done while the beans are grinding to ensure the change occurs optimally. The water leak that you are referencing is not during extraction and can be fixed with a replacement tray. We have sold so many of these La Specialistas that are working beautifully. You would actually see the water leaking if it was occuring on your machine and if you do see just give customer service a call they will happily help you out. 1800 126 659
The pressure gauge does not work on reading the pressure of the machine but the pressure that comes back off the coffee cake so the machine is still delivering the correct pressure. How many times do you tamp. You could tamp twice and make sure you tamp all the way to the end of the lever.
Overall Is the coffee tasting good? If the coffee tastes good then the gauge doesnt matter. At the end of the day regardless of which machine im using, when i adjust settings it's always based on taste and look of the coffee rather than what the machine tells me.
Just try taking the dose up a little more it may help also. Let me know how you go.

Hi,
Firstly i would turn the machine off and on in this order. Turn front off first, then turn the back of machine off then turn off powerpoint and disconnect for 30 seconds. Then plug back in turn power point on then turn back of machine on then turn front of machine on. Ensure the Bean container is clicked in all the way till it clicks.
Then complete the following prime function.
Place a cup, bowl or the steam jug under the hot water tap and the steam wand (hot water will shoot out of both of these during the process)
Turn the hot water tap on- its the button with the tea cup on it. Then turn the steam wand on at the same time. Wait for water to come out of the hot water tap and then the steam wand. It will stop by itself.
Once the water stops turn the steam knob back to off. Then place the stema jug under the brewing head and press the button with the 3 water drops on it and release water from the group head for about 30 seconds. It will either turn off itself if not press the button again to turn off.
Then you can set the dose by grinding and seeing where it doses too after tamping and then set the grind according to the beans you are using and making sure you only move the grinder when the beans are grinding to ensure optimum grind changes.
Hope this helps let me know how you go or if you need to have someone talk you through the steps gie our customer service team a call they are awesome.
Thank you

Check the tamp handle is sitting all the way back in place as there is a microswitch the deactivates the grinder when the tamp is not in resting position otherwise it will get in the way of the grind if it is allowed to activate. Also check the dose dial is not on the pre ground setting this also deactivates the grinder so that you can tamp pre ground coffee.
If the grind chute has never been cleaned it may need to be brushed out with the supplied brush. Insert brush in the hole behind the tamp and brush inside to remove any grounds also open the flap in front of the bean container with the arrow and push the brush down there to remove any grounds this will ensure the grinder can activate and push fresh coffee out.

Hi Cheryl, I have exactly the same issue as Rebecca. Used it three times yesterday with no issue. Tried it this morning and I hear the handle click and nothing.
I’ve powered it off at the plug twice, cleaned the grinder twice, checked the white micro switch, cleaned the grind chute and in the flap in front of the bean hopper. Still nothing happens when I try to grind and there are no warning lights on either.

My descale does not finish the cycle either. The water ran out and light still on. Help

DeLonghi
Cheryl B.DeLonghi

Hi Tanya once you add the descale liquid to the tank and then add the water you turn to descale and press okay the water will work through the group head and the steam wand. If you don't have the water tank full enough it may not be activating because of this.

Hi Chris,
the first time you rinse with the descale through the machine the second time you must rinse out the water tank refill to MAX LINE and then activate the machine to rinse the descaler through. It will stop again you can refill the water tank and it will rinse again until tank is empty and then it will finish the cycle and you can turn the dial back to your favorite coffee recipe and the descale light will turn off.
If you dont fill the water to the max line for the rinse part it will not finish the descale cycle because it has run out of water before it could finish rinsing.

Hey Jianling when the light is flashing the bean container is not locked in correctly it must click all the way to the left. If the light is just on and not flashing this means add beans to the container.

Cheryl B.DeLonghi

Hey Jack
The dose dial can be set to the pre ground setting. that turns the grinder off and allows you to use pre- ground coffee and tamp.
If your grinder isn't working there are a few things to check especially if you haven't cleaned the grinder.
I suggest you give customer service a call as they are super helpful and can talk you through the steps to ensure the grinder is working again.

Hi, recently purchased this product and I can't get past the first step in set up. The 3 drop button doesnt work and the steam thing doesnt work. I have pulled everything apart and restarted but still nothing. I work Monday to Friday and the customer service centre is only open on these days meaning I can't be at home with the machine to try troubleshooting with them. Surely with the cost of this machine one would assume better customer experience would be available?

Cheryl B.DeLonghi

Hey Robyn,
Happy to try and help you online here, were you able to complete the initial prime. Its very important for that step to occur to make sure water comes through the lines and primes the machine ready for use. If that action is not done then the other lights won't come on to complete the prime. There is a how to video that we created for just this situation here is the link it may show you if you have missed a step.
Also don't hesitate to ask me more questions.

Yes

DeLonghi
Cheryl B.DeLonghi

Hey Dianne,
In this case it is best to not use the x2 button even if the double handle is being used and you will have even more room on the dial to take the dose down further.
If you want x 2 of the water volume you can either turn the x 2 back on when you put the shot in or you can reset the my volume to do the espresso volume you would like.

Alex

Alexasked

I have been using my Delonghi La Specialista for almost a year now and I am very familiar with its functions, menus and warning lights. Recently my machine stopped responding when I press the buttons for brew, rinse, hot water as well as the steam dial. The strange thing is there are no warning lights or anything that indicates an error, once the machine is turned ON it takes a few seconds to prepare as the steam indicator flashes and then it stops and all the other buttons are ready for user input. But nothing happens when I press the rinse button, hot water button, or the the brew button, the steam does not come out when the dial is turned ON. Descale works fine which rules out many of the typical problems with pump and valves, etc, even the same buttons (rinse, OK) are responsive during the descale cycle. Only when the machine is ready for use, it stops responding to any user input, tried the reset to factory default as per the manual but it did not solve the problem.

HI Alex,
It sounds like you might have a bit of an air bubble that is stopping the water from coming through.
Are any lights on at all on the control panel?
Have you tried doing the prime function? - this is when you activate the steam wand and then press the hot water button at the same time. This will force the water through both the hot water tap and the steam wand. It may take a minute for the water to come through.
Otherwise if you have tried the above would you mind giving our customer service team a call they would be more than happy to talk you through a few steps to ensure your machine is working again.
Please call on 1800 126 659.

Alex
Alex

Thanks for your response, all lights are working on the control panel, once the machine is turned on (steam light and OK button light) flash for a few seconds until the machine is ready and they both stop and the lights around the other buttons (Rinse, Hot Water) come ON too. In the past when I press the (OK button) to start brewing it will flash to acknowledge that something is happening (brewing underway), but now nothing happens, same with the steam dial and the other buttons (rinse and hot water). Tried your suggestion with the prime function but nothing happened. Anyway, the descale cycle that I have done before pushed water through all the outlets in the machine and that should have taken care of any air bubbles
