Fantastic! But could be more
Had KIA Sportages my whole life, about 6 of them. In 2012 got a Toyota Kluger which was a fanatic car. That gets 5 stars easily.
I then decided to get the new KIA Sportage 2013 model. Platinum too, Car looks amazing, affordable, absolutely fantastic build quality.
Cons:
Could have a little more tech features
Some materials in the cabin are cheap feeling
When I tell people I have a KIA they think of the old KIA brand (which was horrible) and laugh at me!

Value package that sure to impress!
KIA Sportage series 2. Great to drive seating comfortable and good handling, steering slightly heavier than the ix35 but still great. Easy to use controls and audio, bluetooth on steering wheel, Economy good and although not a power house it does the job well with good gear ratios when needed. Did i mention 7year warranty, and parts cheap such as tail lights etc on world market. Needed a Cargo cover bling, Kia dealer price $1400 checked ebay new from HK $103 delivered, brilliant and looks great. No problem towing and engine seems consistent. Leather seats, moon roof, 19" wheels, sat nav, roof rails, push button start, AWD all the right stuff at affordable price. Very happy and in sunny Perth the sunroof is open and the road is long:)

Not that impressed anymore / traded it in the minute it was paid off!
I've had my platinum kia sportage since December 2011. Initially I was super impressed with it but.. over time the seats seem to be harder and less comfortable.
The rear indicators are in the most stupid of places - down in the bumpers - I've been abused by other drivers for not indicating when I have been and nearly rear ended a few times - these are unsafe and need to be moved up into the main light area for safety reasons.

Great things about it and the 3 improvements it needs
Had the platinum diesel for coming up on four years. Purchased from new due to good safety, 5 year warranty, price and value for money. It's been gr8 and reliable.
Some really good aspects of it are the amazing turning circle (I think it sets the bench-mark) and there is heaps of room in the back. It is highly reliable; hasn't missed a beat. Did well on a trip to the snow in a blizard (using alpine diesel of course or the diesel would turn to wax). Engine is near best in class powerful and the 6 speed transmission is very smooth. ong trip we get 7 L/100Km and if we reduce from 110mh to 100Kmh that figure drops a bit to 6.5 L/100Km. Around town we get 10 L/100Km. You don't need to slow down for speed humps in Richmond when you visit the city as there is good clearance. I disagree with the motoring writers about its handling - I think they are the ones with a problem. I live in the country and drive hard and push my vehicles up windy mountain roads. I have had Toyota Celica, Mazda 6, Fords and Land Rovers and this little diesel leaves them for dead and handles really well. I used to rally a well set-up Lotus Escort back in the 80 and I recon I would take 20 percent off my section times if I was in this Sportage. But I would change the front seats. The things to fix: 1) Fuel tank it too small for the country. It only takes 50 litres - smallest volume I have ever had in a vehicle and annoying having to regularly refuel. 2) The seat bolsters are too small. Possibly the industry smallest so it doesn't feel snug on cornering for a driver who likes to drive (but my grandmother wouldn't notice).Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Good value and no problems
Purchased the car new five years ago. No problems except for a sticking fuel filler hatch which was easily fixed. Might not be the most exciting drive around but we found it best of that sized SUV at the time. Plenty of inclusions.Diesel is economical and the car is an easy drive in the suburbs and gets along well on the highway.Servicing is reasonably inexpensive and some sat nav updates have been included.Never thought we would own a Kia but now very happy that we do - and would buy another again in the future. The only (non-service)replacements over the last five years (and 40.000 km) have been a battery and a set of wiper blades Customer service from selling/servicing dealer has been good.

Nice but not for me
I'm looking for a new car so decided to test drive the Kia Sportage Platinum diesel.
Great looking funky car. Build quality inside and out is good and the price is excellent. Lots of features and bang for your bucks, ie: leather heated front row seats. Cooled drivers seat, (don't know why they didn't cool the passenger seat as well though), Bluetooth phone connectivity, proximity keyless entry, elect diver seat and the list goes on. What they didn't include, which I wanted, was satnav.
Driving the car, at start there's the usual diesel no...Read more
ise at idle which disappeared after the car was in motion. However, at 90km/h plus, there is quite a bit of road noise. I specifically tested it on a freeway at 100km/h for road noise and it was loud enough to be a distraction. I do a lot of country driving and it's too noisy. Gear changes were ok, except when you kicked it down a gear. then not quite so smooth. Space - I'm 5'11" and there is not much head room in the drivers seat. I adjusted the seat as low as it could go, and nearly still touched the roof. The same could be said for the rear seats, again my head nearly hit the roof. leg room in the front or back seemed ok. Rear boot is small. General overall quality and finish. Kia have come a long way. It's as good as the locally made cars, not as good as the Jap cars and certainly still a way behind the Europeans. Price, features service costs. Road noise at higher speeds, little head room, small boot space, steering a bit vague.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

The Diesel is a revelation!
Bought a MY 2013 Sportage Platinum earlier this year - plenty of torque, cruises effortlessly and the diesel is quiet, smooth and economical (regularly 7.2 l/100km). Exceptionally well equipped and plenty of get up and go when required (especially at overtaking speeds). I have had no problems and find that the reversing camera makes up for the restricted rear vision. With the recent increase to 7 year unlimited km warranty and capped price servicing I am convinced it was a good buy.

Very good car, and great value
My wife loved the look of the Kia Sportage Platinum diesel. I thought it would be terrible, but it was great on test drive. Two years later it is still very impressive, not as good as my Land Rover Discovery, but that cost more than twice as much. Only real complaint is that the visibility is poor, so 4 stars instead of 5. Fuel consumption is higher than expected, but not huge, around 8 to 9 with mainly short trips. I know it is mechanically almost identical to the ix35, but it somehow seems better. Would I get another? Most certainly.

Best looking SUV in its class
I purchased my new Diesel Platinum Sportage July 2013. I was taken by its looks, its a real head turner. Build quality is excellent, heaps of power and good fuel economy. I looked at the Hyundai ix35, they don't look as good and after reading a lot of comparison reviews the Sportage always came out on top. Very happy with my purchase and would recommend this vehicle to anyone looking for a medium size SUV.

Very pleased with this purchase
Forget what you think you know from past KIA products. This company has definitely moved on. Was recently looking to replace my 2007 Toyota RAV-4. Shortlisted a number of SUV's including the KIA (which we really only tried as the dealer was close by). Wow... immediately impressed with the test drive along with the fit and finish of the vehicle and what you got for your money. Moved it immediately to the top of the short list. Also, had never considered buying a diesel engine until we drove one at the test drive (my wife drove it too and didn't ...Read more
realise it was a diesel until I mentioned it to her later). Closest rival was the Mazda CX-5 and while it may have handled the bumps fractionally better, it couldn't match the KIA's 7 year factory warranty (Mazda is 3 years) nor the amount of kit you got for the same money. Bottom line... we bought a Platinum diesel. After a couple of months of ownership, here's a list of the notable good and bad points (in decreasing order of priority) as we see it. What we like: * What you get for your money * Seven year warranty * Quality of finish and build. Panel gaps are even and everything feels well made with quality materials. Nothing has broken/fallen off thus far which is more than I can say for other new vehicles I have had * Quality of drive (seen some reports saying its a bit harsh/bumpy/stiff. Maybe just a little but definitely much better than my previous RAV-4 and far from unpleasant or a "deal breaker") * Appearance (design) * Overall quietness. Interior cabin noise is much less than my old RAV-4. Engine "growl" only heard during idle (faintly with all windows up) and acceleration. Cruising is very quiet * Power of diesel coupled with 6 speed auto. Accelerates very briskly from low speeds and has plenty on tap for highway overtaking.Purchased in October 2021 at Cricks Highway.

Loads of power & fuel efficient
We purchased the Diesel platinum 2 years ago & we've been very happy with it. Excellent on fuel, particularly long trips. We really couldn't fault this car, it's very powerful & can take off quickly which is handy for overtaking etc. We also got the colour sand track & we're always getting compliments on the car. The Audi styling has made it a real head turner esp with daytime LEDs.

Looks great, nice drive, but drinks like a v8
I purchased my 2013 Platinum 2.4L petrol around July last year. It is a very good looking car, and appeared to be very good value for money with features such as leather interior, push button start, electric driver’s seat, auto headlights and wipers, sat nav, Bluetooth connectivity, cruise control, trip computer, etc...
It has published combined consumption rate of 9.2L/100km, but I am averaging between 12 - 13l/100kms. I took it for a drive down south and back and I only managed 10.5l/100kms, which is extremely disappointing. Perhaps I got...Read more
a Friday car, but the Kia service people are trying to convince me that it is normal, and give it time to "break in". I am doubtful. In terms of ride comfort, it is a great drive. The seats are comfortable, power is adequate, and handling is pretty good. I have had to have the sat nav firmware upgraded three times due to problems, and it appears to have finally resolved the problems. Sat nav keyboard is QWERTY, but the phone book is ABCD, which is silly. Cruise control while it works, requires constant re-adjustment to maintain set speed. The accelerate (+) button does not really work. The audio system is very good, and it is nice that you can connect your iPhone via the connector, or Bluetooth. There are two auxiliary points, and one USB port. While the auto wipers are great, if left on auto, it will turn once when you start up the car which is bad when the windscreen is dry. In summary, while it appears that you are getting a lot for your money, the quality is not up to the same standards as the Japanese or European cars, which may be acceptable depending on your expectations. But it will cost you a lot more than you expect in fuel consumption. If I had known about the real consumption, I would have not bought the car. Sexy design, drives great, good audio system, capped price servicing, five year unlimited kms warranty Fuel consumption, poor cruise control, no QWERTY option on phone dialSimilar opinion? Bang for buck, looks sexy but there's some Cons you need to consider
My review of the Kia Sportage Series 2 Platinum Petrol
Pro’s that I care about
It looks sexy. Probably thanks to [name removed] (ex-Audi designer). The tail or the “[censored word removed]” looks sexy. Well done [name removed]. The front grill and LED lights look good too.
Price, great price for top Platinum model with lots of features such as leather seats, sunroof, big SatNav, reversing camera, auto wipers, driver and passenger heated seats (not that we need really them in Sydney).
Pro’s but I don’t really care
Kia gave a full size Alloy wheel tyre (yes, I don’t know why, but they give a full size Alloy tyre as a spare) so guess it’s a pro.

I've owned 2 of these, both great
After driving Territory's for years I decided to try the Kia Diesel Platinum, well after 185,000 ks in two years when it came time to get another vehicle I got another, this one has done 75,000 in just over 12 months, these are truly a great vehicle, never had any problems, very comfortable to drive, nibble in the traffic but rolls along the highway effortlessly, probably get another next year.

r trim on drivers side door. So far the second one, there is a grommet fitted to rear right light assembly wiring loom, the dealer fitted loom for trailer runs back through this, if not fitted correctly allows water into wheel well, the amp and trailer ecu are fitted low in wheel well, I filled both with water, no dramas, got both replaced. One issue, stick to the Hankook tyres, on this one I have fitted Goodyears hoping to get a few more miles, way too noisy. Comfortable, handles well, economical, and tows well. Windscreens seem softer, prone to sandblasting.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Sportage Platinum Diesel equals Awesomeness
Have had our Sportage Platinum Diesel now for just on 12 Months and almost 14000km on the odometer - since day one it has been a pleasure to drive - great visibility and easy to park with the reverse camera. Diesel engine very smooth and very powerful - its almost effortless with the amount of torque it has. Must admit both my Wife and myself were Kia Brand snobs previously - but cant rate it highly enough- Build Quality and fit is great.
Average just on 8-8.5lt/100km around town - and down to as low as 6lt/100km on a Long Highway trip
Sat Nav - sunroof - fun to drive
Cannot go through Radio presets on Steering Wheel button

2013 Platinum 2.4 petrol
We bought the top of the range Platinum with the sat nav 4WD with the sunroof and leather seats . I found that I didnt need most of the features such as the sunroof, heated and cooled seats and really not even the satnav (iphone has one) but 8.5/100 and a nice car to drive,I just added an aftermarket towbar and nudgebar, and it is a great car for 37k. Not as much grunt as my previous falcon fg but who needs speeding fines
Too many warning alarms.it is worse than my wife

Kia Sportage SL Platinum Diesel
I spent a lot of time researching before picking up a 2011 SL Platinum Diesel at auction (a repossession).
At the beginning of my search to upgrade from a tired 2001 Astra I wasn't expecting to end up with a diesel automatic SUV that is Orange. However I'm very happy with my decision.
Punchy 2.0L engine with plenty of power. Comparatively good fuel economy (around 8L/100KM). Roomy interior. Great looks (especially in Orange), High quality fit-out that has caused me to be told to stop showing off on several occasions. These include reversing ...Read more

It beats my Rangie! Hands down!!
After experiencing many costly issues with my 2004 Range Rover (which incidentally, I really loved!) my husband said go and buy a new car and trade in the Rangie! I didn't know what to buy, but I wanted something that was higher above the ground than a sedan! The Kia always appealed to me but it's earlier reputation didn't!! I went to the Kia dealer with my dad, and by that afternoon, the Rangie was traded!! Best thing I ever did! I got the Kia Sportage Platinum Diesel on Feb 11th from Berwick Kia! It is awesome!!! I bought it in white, it looks great, it drives great, I LOVE the heated seats (after footy) and I love the cooled driver's seat in summer! It's my baby and no one else is allowed to drive it!!! What else can I say?? So glad I bought it and will probably upgrade it in 5 yrs time and stay in the new car market!! Also, just wanted to add that I got a top of the range Kia at nearly half of the price of the big name brands (eg. BMW, Range Rover, etc). Didn't have to pay for any extras either except car mats!! Great SUV super cool car !
I have the platinum diesel 2012. Wow what a great car! I'm a rep & do quite a few K's I checked out all the SUV's up to 50k and this cracker defiantly comes out on top. I too had a ego problem about the badge but let me tell you, this medium pocket rocket ticks all the boxes: stylish looks, heaps of power and very economical. Just a great all rounder - buy one!!!

I have a deal to buy kia 2012 platinum diesel 4wd for $15000 with 100000km on odometer. I am in a doubt whether I should buy this car or not as its Going to be 8 years old. Dealer is giving me extra 100000km warranty for extra $1200. Can anyone guide me is this a good deal to go for? Or i should buy a newer sportage?
1 answer
Check out car sales.com for comparative prices. It's done less than 13k per year so it's probably been well looked after and obviously not done much time on the road in 8 years. Price seems fine but low km is not always good for diesel particulate filters. If you buy it, fill it up with premium diesel and take it for a good highway run to clean it out. It's a kia, so mostly reliable.
Does it have a tow bar? Has it towed caravans? That can cause extra wear and tear on the rear suspension.
