Cleaner chimneys, no smoke, peace of mind
Have been using for 4 years. Have 1mtr wide jetmaster fire boxes with screens. Before you would see smoke at times billowing from chimneys. Now I can only smell it. Fire burns cleaner, a lot less ash and of course peace of mind that the house won't burn down from a chimney fire. Inspect chimneys and very little soot from them. Use box hardwood with occasional cypress pine. Fire is banked down overnight when required with no problems. I was concerned with 'a lively flame and no smouldering' that's impractical if fire is going for days at...Read more
a time. Especially when it's the main heat source! I had talked with Smartburn people for best position and with inverted V shaped ash boxes it was difficult to position the product. Firebrick levelled with ash each end has worked for years. Clear/shake ash from containers when necessary. Have had one knocked off brick to empty contents - still works but only lasts a short time. Depends on how long you have fire on really high burn. This product is like insurance - you don't think it works/or needed until you have a chimney fire or worse your house is burnt down! My neighbour had a chimney fire - very scary. A lot cheaper than building a new house or a new chimney/flue system!Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!
open fire
We have been using these for about 6 yrs now in our open fire in Mount Dandenong (Vic). Took a bit of working out with Smartburn but we have a setup that seems to work for us. We use 2 at a time, primarily to keep the flue clean.
We had to burn a lot of dried cypress early on and have now migrated to local hard wood. Its not our primary heating source, they aren't cheap, but they have certainly done the job with the flue.......

Can`t fault current results
I recently moved to Tasmania & am now using a wood heater. I was introduced to Smart Burn by a local who claimed I would benefit from its use. After installation I noticed a nice clean fire, little or no smoke outside despite lots of smokey fires around me. So for me, it looks good but the jury is still out. I`ve had a chat to my new Woody & he stressed that the quality/ age/ dryness of the fuel used was important given that a lot of green firewood was on offer.

Read the fine print!....TWICE.
Like most consumers, I read the instructions and followed them to the letter, or so I thought. This thing needs to be on a firebrick ($10 at BBQ's Galore if you don't have one) and kept well clear of the daily ash build up. This is critical. Actually, I would suggest that you place it around 70-75 mm. above the firebox floor in order to achieve this separation. The manufacturers contacted me eventually, (the emailing part of their website which I tried was not working apparently) and they could make no specific recommendations regarding the hei...Read more
ght above the floor of the heater for their product. I bought one firebrick but to save yourself having to keep a close eye on the ash build up near the product, I would suggest you get two bricks (only firebricks as the normal ones can crack or even explode). You could just get one brick and possibly break it in half and put the two halves on top of each other. This would give you about 70mm in height. I am now of the opinion that the product does work, but there are a lot of conditions each of which will determine how well it works and for how long. READ THE FINE PRINT carefully before spending your money! Some of the conditions the manufacturer imposes as conditional to the product working are quite impractical. For instance, Do not let the fire smoulder, always have a visible flame. If I did this there would be no wood left by the morning and the fire would be out. That's not how we use our heater, I close it right down overnight and open it up fully in the morning and very soon there are red hot coals. Smartburn are saying you can't do this so you decide for yourself if this condition works for you. You must also ensure that your wood is tinder dry, my words not theirs, but read the brochure and you'll soon get the picture. I can see no visible difference in the soot build up at the top of the flue. My wood has probably been the wrong type, or not 100% dried out. In conclusion, DON'T expect results like they show on tele. Good luck!

great for keeping your flu clean
Have been using smart burns for many years, had the flue cleaned after 4 years and only yield about a cup of soot - enough said they work
To the reviewers saying that the glass goes black, its from your wood and from when you damp it down, a hot fire the next day gets rid of it. A unblocked clean flu is more important than a bit of black on the glass - no flu fires

Savings Galore
My late husband initially purchased Smart Burn following seeing it on The New Inventors. This product has been a god send to us over the years and more so over the last 2years living by myself. It cleans the flue and I get a lot more value out of my wood. The glass cleaning benefits are a bit hit and miss but I have worked out over time that's usually due to airflow in my heater and sometimes how I manage the wood pile that I load. When I do get black soot on my glass in the corners it's definitely easier to clean using Smart Burn. I just use a bit of ash from the firebox on a cloth and the black clears straight off.

Do not buy this product, its a scam!!!!
It had no effect at all of the soot build up in my Kent log fire. Contacted the manufacturers who told me to buy two more !!! Even our local retailer returned his stock to his wholesaler after several complaints and angry users. $75.00- its a rip-off !!

Sucked in
Bought a smart burn about 3 weeks ago. Glass is going black more than it did with out the smart burn in it and the wood is burning out every night. Never used to burn out. Somebody got sucked in. Wasted $40.

Waste of money
Haven't noticed any decrease in blackening of the glass on the fireplace. After one week the active (?) ingredient reduced to a size of a pea - and after another week I managed to shake it out of the matel casing. Waste of $39.

Rubbish
I bought this as I saw it advertised. What a waste of a lot of money. It does not do as it suggests. My wood stove glass door is black every night even following the directions to the letter. My wood burn time is just the same. Total waste of money.

I am impressed with Smart Burn
I have a Nectre Mark 2 wood heater and have used it for 15 years. I purchased the Smart Burn to essentially give it a go and have been both surprised and impressed with the results. There is a lot less ash in the box and it is definitely hotter and the wood burns cleaner and longer. I have mainly messmate and peppermint on my block. I have shut down the fire and it has left some clear blocks of charcoal ready for the next burn. It has definitely had an effect. When this one is used up I will be getting another for sure.
Just an update. Still using the smartburn and still happy with it. However I haven't found that it has cleaned my fire window very much at all. For me it is the longer and hotter burn time that I find is working so well.

Not very good
Bought the smart burn in hope it would be beneficial. Unfortunately we found no improvement. The fire went out every night. It is normally still burning in the mornings once we shut it down at night. Gave it a go but to no avail for us!

Great Product!
I'm not sure what category to put Smart Burn under - I don't think there is a suitable category as it's such a unique product! You place it in your wood stove or fireplace and it makes the wood burn more efficiently, as well as reducing smoke emissions, and it stops soot from building up in your chimney! Apparently the inventor used to work in coal power stations and decided to use his industrial knowledge on a residential scale. I've been using Smart Burn ever since we got our wood stove, so it wasn't until my husband accidentally threw out th...Read more
e container that I realised how well it had been working. Without the Smart Burn there was a definite increase in smoke and we started going through alot more wood! We have since purchased a new Smart Burn. I'm really hoping the claims of keeping the chimney clean are true - I haven't been using it long enough to be able to comment on that. Overall, this is a great innovative Aussie product! Great Innovative Aussie Product! I have only been using it for a relatively short time, so am yet to see if the long-term product claims are true.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Hello Brady,
Thanks for your interest in our product, and for your good question that we get asked often.
Provided that you can start your fire and get it up to temperature, in order to melt the SmartBurn ingredients, then it will clean your flue with noticeable results over the first two weeks. It is possible that you will hear material cracking off the inside of your flue on the first night. Having your flue inspected by a professional chimney sweep is always a good idea, who can check for corrosion and other structural issues as well. However, the SmartBurn will not only unblock a mostly blocked over flue, but maintain it clean for the approx three months lifespan of the device. SmartBurn is simple to use, safe and non corrosive.
Many thanks, Glenn
Cheers Glenn. I have a chimney sweep coming to have a look on Thursday and will put a smartburn in once I relight it again that day.
Ellenasked
Hi do I need to place the smartburn on a specific heat brick? Or can I substitute with a rock?
Thanks

Glenn F.SmartBurn
Hi Ellen,
Thanks for your interest in SmartBurn and question. No please don't use a rock, as the supporting surface needs to be completely flat and level. The idea of placing your SmartBurn on a fire-proof brick is a recommendation, however not essential. Once heated the ingredients inside the SmartBurn tube melt and sit as a liquid inside the tube. Vapours off this liquid release via the holes in the ends and are the catalyst that improves the burning efficiency within your firebox. Due to the ingredients being liquid when hot, the tube must remain level at all times. Placing the SmartBurn higher up on something heat proof prevents the holes in the ends from being buried in ash and stopping the vapours from releasing. The firebrick also gives the tube a flat stable base that is higher up and further away from being disturbed by logs. Firebricks are available from any heating store that sells new wood heaters as a spare part, or via our web cart. Please also don't place a regular house or paving brick inside your wood heater. Buy the smallest firebrick that you can source.
Many thanks,
SmartBurn Australia
Ok thanks for your informative reply. Cheers
Hi Ellen,
I agree with Glenn.
We've placed our Smartburn directly on the floor of our fireplace with no support underneath.

I have a cast iron rectangular heater door one end and 90degree elbow for the flue at the other end, where is the best place to place the Smart Burn . Under the flue on brick or where ? Please tell

Hi Rob H
The best answer I can give is how I used it on my heater.
I have a slow combustion wood fire, Masport Verona, with a cast iron fire box.
It has a glass door, which when opened gives access to a steel panel (shelf) just inside the door.
I place the smart burn on this shelf between the door and the fire.
Hope this helps
