Sunbeam Cafe Series KE9600 (page 2 of 3)
Were happy enough with our expensive Sunbeam kettle (swapped & paid extra $$ at The Good Guys after we returned our Russell Hobbs kettle with a faulty lid).
Apart from the buttons losing their captions (rubbed off most used buttons) it did the job until it started to leak. The leak was very slight at first - almost like condensation & occurred whilst still under warranty. Then more puddles would appear as we accused each other of sloppily filling the kettle!
Only realised where it was coming from when started to leak profusely. By then it w...

Read moreto the Good Guys in early 2015 & they checked with Sunbeam. I explained it had been leaking very slightly at first - almost like condensation & this had definitely occurred whilst it was still under warranty. ( see my comment above) ( I couldn't find the receipt today - though I said I was quite willing to pay the postage to send the kettle to Sunbeam so they had proof I had purchased it & so they could see the cracks across each side of plastic viewing windows causing the leaks) The 262 embossed code on the base shows that this was manufactured in 2012. (So just 3 years old when we realised we did not have a condensation or overfilling problem and it leaked profusely all over the bench ) Despite my pointing out that I felt this was a design fault as clearly other consumers had the same problem & one does not expect an expensive kettle to leak so soon - I was told 1) I should have descaled the kettle - I replied we are not on town water and have two very expensive filter systems to purify the rain water so that it is fit for drinking ( a high adsorption rate 98% Suspended Solids 2) Disagreed with me that the leak was dangerous - as it would have cut out the power 3) Too far out of warranty & I did not have the receipt handy today - so nothing could be done..... I could not get a straight answer about what would happen if I produced the receipt!!!! Now so over this - I do have the receipt in the house somewhere - I had it when I went to town to visit the Good Guys as instructed & when I commented on the Sunbeam website & back in September - but having no clue as to what will happen IF I produce the receipt has left me thinking - Do I really want some discount off another Sunbeam kettle that is not made to last? Nope.... I will stick with other brands - because ( call me old-fashioned ) but I DO want a kettle that is still fit for it's purpose 3 years after purchase......... Interesting that CHOICE magazine has a cheap Homebrand kettle as it's number 1 performer.... Caveat emptor.......- 3 reviews

My kettle lasted a little longer (2.5 years) the lid malfunctioned after 2 years and now the water gauge is split and leaking water. I've followed the care and cleaning instructions. Disappointed with the product and I thought it would last longer. I purchased the kettle thinking it would last longer than the cheap ones.

I bought this to replace a top of the line Breville that had stopped working after 3 years which I thought was disappointing. It seemed to be a good replacement at first as I loved how quiet it was and liked the temperature display (helps with timing the warming of the pot!). But come on, 15 months usage and the lid mechanism fails and the handle starts coming away! A $50 kettle maybe but not a $100+!

Was a very expensive and very nice kettle for 18 months before the lid opening mechanism broke. Sadly now fit for the bin. Expected more from what was sold as a premium product. $110 for 18 months of use is not great value in my book. Won't be buying a sunbeam kettle again.

What can they do for me?
How about they contact me on 0400731029 and let me know what they can do for me? I have better things to do than call a helpline.

What a disgrace. Just over a year old. Lid won't open, leaking, and this morning my sons hand got scalded picking it up by the handle. The handle had heated up to burning point. I have contacted Sunbeam. Obviously a real problem and should have been recalled. SO DANGEROUS. I got asked about descaling etc...as if somehow i held some responsibility for their crap product!

Have only had this for just over 12 months and the lid will not stay shut. Overall the kettle has been great until now, will try calling Sunbeam and see if they will replace. Given the cost of the item I would have thought it would last a lot longer than it has.

Great Kettle until lid stopped opening at 16 months - But good service from Sunbeam who replaced und
I really want to write a great review for this kettle. As a kettle it's been great, fantastic controls, durable stainless steel inside and out and a decent capacity. Unfortunately when you pay good $140 for a kettle I would expect to get 5 years from it - I've had many $50 kettles last this long.
The kettle finally failed when the lid stopped opening - which made it very difficult to fill. I have to pay credit to Sunbeam who I called initially hoping that they would have a quick fix to perform myself. They had no easy solution, but offer...
Read moreed to replace with new model despite it being out of warranty. I suspect that the Australian consumer law may have something to do with their easy going out of warranty attitude but as I said a $100+ kettle should last 5 years IMHO. Credit also goes to Harvey Norman Bunbury (WA), as I didnt have the reciept I took the kettle down to them to see if they could help or print a new receipt for me. They were great and offered to swap for a new kettle and said that they would sort out the warranty with Sunbeam (who also said Sunbeam were good to deal with). The replacement kettle model KE9650 feels a bit flimsy in the handle and lid unlike the previous model which was solid - I don't expect it to last any longer than the KE9600 but fingers crossed. I should also note that we got the KE9600 after we had two expensive Breville's fail. The sunbeams have lasted longer than the Breville's and are constructed better out of stainless steel inside and out. Lesson from this - don't expect expensive appliances to last these days, but if you buy from good Bricks and mortar retailers you are likely to get well looked after in the event of failure. 5 stars for Harvey Norman Bunbury and Sunbeam for the after warranty support!Related Articles

I purchased this kettle 9 months ago.. It has started leaking quite bad through the plastic window.. And when I say leaking I mean leaking really bad - it's quite dangerous! I have purchased 2 sunbeam products this past year and I have been very unhappy with both of these. I wish I had read the reviews prior to spending $139!!
Was given this kettle for Christmas 2 years ago & lid is sticking down. Need to lever it open with a spoon every time. Also the lid does not shut sometimes due to the shutting mechanism jamming. Bought one for my daughter & I've noticed it appears to be heading in the same direction. Otherwise a great kettle

Leaking after warranty period under normal (2 person) household use...not fit for purpose.
Just out of warranty and started to leak around level indicator on one side. Water everywhere over cupboards . Now reduced to 1/4 filling which appears to fix the leaking !! Bought this model thinking at the price that it would last longer than my earlier sunbeam which had less bells and whistles..which obviously was a mistake! Now off to another brand.
Mine started to leak out of the side soon after the 12 month warranty expired too! Can't believe I spent over $100 on what I thought would be a good long-lasting kettle and a $20 one would have lasted for longer. No help from Sunbeam when I rang up either. Poor form Sunbeam.

Same as many others, mine started leaking very slowly, for about 2 months, I put it down to careless filling up or steam. Then over the last 2 weeks I have woken up to find the element filled with water. Today I started to fill it up and the water poured out of the glass indicator area. on both sides of the kettle. There is no crack. Wow, what a waste of money as it's only 15 months old.

I was really impressed with this jug at first until my daughter in law had found her's leaking. Then within 2 months, mine started leaking similarly.
All the electric base and the cupboard top covered in water overnight and a potentially hazardous situation next morning.
Even though this appliance is stylish and functional, it's very disappointing consider the cost of purchase.
The element comes with a 2 year guarantee, but there is only a 12 month replacement guarantee, so it gets through the warranty period OK, then leaks.
I thought this was a great kettle until it started to leak water on to the electrics. This happened 15 months after purchase. The glass on both sides of the kettle seems to have cracked and by reading most of the other reviews this is a very common problem. This is not a cheap kettle to break after such a short period of time plus water leaking onto the electrics is an extreme hazard. Do not buy!!!!
We first brought this Kettle in January of 2013 and a day before the warranty was due to end, it decided just not turn on, went back to Myers who replaced it, without a problem everything was going fine until last night when my husband found water everywhere, I called sunbeam this morning after reading others have had the same problem, as this appears to be a fault, I would have got a better reply from my youngest grandchild….. So i called the ACCC and told them they told me to call Myer, I don't feel it should be Myer who need to deal with th...

We need to use a screwdriver to lever open the lid of our KE9600 Sunbeam kettle to fill it. It is very inconvenient and unacceptable given the "quality" brand and price paid. The good news is I have two days left with the 12 month warranty and will be on Harvey Normans doorstep tomorrow for a refund.
Well I went back to Harvey Norman with the faulty kettle and they replaced it without question. I always scan receipts and guarantees into my computer so always have the info needed. It was not necess...
Read morearyy with Harvey Norman as their own records did the job. It is still much better to buy a kettle that works as it is supposed to !!We purchased this kettle and paid around $99 as we were impressed by the features and the looks. it started leaking in around 10 months time however I realised it later as it was just a minor drip and thought the water was due to the steam accumalation. when I realised that it was genuinely leaking it was out of warranty hence could not get a replacement. What a waste of money.

I bought this kettle in 8/09/2014 at Myer. Expensive for a kettle but lured by this promise - KE9600 Cafe Series® Variable Temperature Kettle. Yesterday, 16/02/15 5 months after its warranty expired, it was profusely leaking. I couldn't see visible crack but water just flooded the base coming out from the glass window. Judging by the comments of people here, we all have about similar experiences and timeframe when this kettle showed its demise. I would like all of us affected by this problem to organize ourselves and get a replacement or m...
Read moreoney back from Sunbeam because obviously this is a manufacturing defect. sunbeam hides behind the 'expired warranty' - BUT as consumers, I think we ought to enjoy our purchases at least two years ( considering the price tag of this kettle). I'm keeping the kettle because I would like Sunbeam to see it. It's not our manner of usage that caused the breakdown of this product, it's the mediocre quality of the product that caused this problem. I hope someone could help.OOOPS...correction to the above dates kettle was was bought 8/09/2013.

Happy Dance!!! I used it to buy a new kettle, this time a Kitchenaid-kek1522 worth $349. Another expensive one but we'll see. I will share my review in few weeks time. Too early to say anything. So far my new Kitchenaid 1522 Artisan kettle is superb! Thank you Myer for service par excellence. Folks if you want to buy expensive stuff go to a reputable shop like Myer, their service is beyond measure. P.S. Sunbeam only offered 30% discount towards buying another kettle from them. How pathetic! We purchased this sunbeam kettle 6 months ago from myer and was quite expensive for a kettle but we liked the concept of controlling the temperature and it's design. Not long after purchase I noticed water leaking to its base and often disregarded this until it stared to have water underneath and I got zapped when using kettle. This is the most dangerous kettle I have ever owned and very disappointed in Sunbeam as I have finally googled that others have had the same issue. please don't buy this product it should be recalled. Read moreunbeam with no results so if this review deters anyone from buying this product it I am more than pleased as it's the most dangerous electrical hazard. Our power fused during the night due to this water leaking not impressed with this at all.Absolutely loved the kettle until I noticed a crack on the clear panel (looks like its from the middle, as I cannot feel any crack on the outside or inside the kettle when I put my finger through). 2 weeks after noticing the crack, it is now leaking water. Is this a common problem? Seems like the last 2 reviews has the same problem Recall??
I loved this kettle when I first purchased it due to the variable temperature function.
However at 15months the kettle leaks like a sieve, to the point of the electronics on the base flickering when I discovered it this morning, so enough to have gone into the base of the unit and enough to give me a mild zap when I touched it. UNSAFE, UNRELIABLE.
The warranty from Sunbeam may only stipulate 12 months but under consumer law I would say we would still have recall. It is unfit for use just over a year after being purchased which is ou...
Read moretside a reasonable time you would expect an appliance to operate, especially at the price of this unit. If I expected only a years use I would have bought a $20 kettle from Kmart, which we have at work and interestingly it is in its 3rd year! Awaiting a response from Sunbeam. It will be further complaints if they ignore me, the kettle may have killed me if not for my safety switch.- 3 reviews

NICE KETTLE, NOT TOO LOUD...BUT LEAKS LIKE A SIEVE AFTER WARRANTY EXPIRED
This little kettle I really liked....very happy with design...didn't find it too noisy compared to some other brand kettles...one day I awoke to find my bench totally covered in water...checked kettle and noticed leaks from both sides of the clear glass panels of each side...was so disappointed...and just happened to have been out of warranty...Trying other brand at the moment...not sure I will buy another sunbeam again...

Heavy, but pretty good - until it broke just after the warranty expired :(
I would have expected a kettle that costs twice or triple that of cheaper brands to last at least 2 years, not one.

Bought this kettle in July 2014. It is quieter than any other kettle I have had. Loved the variable temperature function, which is great for tea drinkers because setting it to the right temperature for certain teas ensures you don't burn your tea. I had previously recommended this kettle, but three years later a leak has formed under the water level window, so it seems the seal around that area requires a bit more quality control.
After years of supporting Sunbeam café series products and recommending them to family and friends based on quality and good design, I am very disappointed with this kettle. Just out of warranty and leaking like a sieve. After reading all the similar reviews, it is safe to say it is a design fault. Coming from a electrical design background I would go as far as to say it's a deliberate design fault! While all the café series products I own have good to great reviews, it does raise the question why the product that is used all day, everyday (ket...
Read moretle) is the one that has the design fault. Most people that have purchased the series are likely to keep replacing it with the same brand to keep their kitchens uniformed. If all products last too long the company isn't getting more sales.. Considering the level of design standards with the café series range WHY IS SOMTHING SO SIMPLE, DESIGNED AND INSTALLED LIKE THIS????? based on the reviews I have just read, I'm off to buy a Breville...Other Electric Kettles
