After being disappointed with the reliability of a Ford Ranger (PJ) and Mazda BT-50 (MKII 2014), I've purchased a 2022 SR5 Hilux. While I'd normally wait a few years to review a car (so I can see how it performs mechanically), I thought I'd do an initial review of the apparent highest selling 4x4 utility.

Generally, I'm pretty happy with it at present, however there are some strange things going on in the world of Toyota and Hilux.

Hi I bought this Ute for $45888 from a dealership 09/2016 model was purchased in January 2022 still under warranty for peace of mind but after 3 months the Ute starts blowing a lot of smoke making noise from right front shock also find a rust spot near front windscreen on the roof I contact Toyota and was sent to closest Toyota service department left the Ute for 5 days till Toyota received parts change DPF and the shock about rust I was sent to panel beater to look at it I took the Ute an I was told he will send the quote to Toyota. Love the hilux but it’s not perfect, 2016 2.8 sr5 duelcab

Pros.
-Interior is one of the best looking interior in the segment it feels up to date and it looks great comfortable enough to be in.
-Exterior, also my favourite looking ute, to me looks aggressive and beefy.
-4x4 is great and easy takleing tough courses, friendly interface to get into four wheels.
-Drivability is good on the highway and city, doesn’t have electric steering but it’s light enough and sharp enough at higher speeds.
-Towing is easy (don’t have a caravan or a boat) but have tested pulling a trailer with a commodore on top and didn’t struggle.
-Reverse camera easy to reverse park.

My hilux is a 2017 6 speed manual, that hasn’t missed a beat other than a hand break adjustment. Fuel economy with 30,000 km was around 10 ltr per 100, after driving from Melbourne to Darwin and all over Kakadu and back doing over 12,000 kms fuel economy improved to 8.5ltr per hundred. At first I believed the new Hilux was the best released, fully equipped with everything you would need, but after 1000km's I began to see some issues. A few small items (loose door seal, windscreen wiper motor fail) then after 10,000km's I began to notice a much larger problem. Fuel economy stats on all web pages say that you should get between 8L/100km and 9.5L/100km, however my fuel economy is at 14.5L per 100km. This is a daily vehicle; used for mixed driving. I purchased it after going for three years with a Prado that was a dog of a thing due to the DPF issues that plagued the experience (see my other review).

I purchased this car because of the manual DPF switch in it.

What I like about the vehicle so far is that it has a far better power to weight ratio that means it is a very torquey engine and has good performance. The fuel so far is a bit of a downside, it seems to go through more than I wanted it to but I am only doing suburban driving so...Read more

Worst mistake of my life buying a 2017 diesal hilux, the new engine seems slower than the older model hilux and ride quality doesn't even exist. On top of this expect to be at a dealer every second day of the week for dpf issues, rust issues, gearbox issues, vibration issues, fuel consumption issues, quite possibly the worst dealer mechanics in the history of the automotive industry who couldn't change a light bulb if their life depended on it let alone diagnose and fix issues with the car. Driving is ok interior good gearbox has Magour issues upgraded fuel tank from Arb heaps better taken it back to Toyota for gearbox issues ie thumping from start hard changes keep on telling the dealer something is wrong they say our techs carnt find a fault so why do they keep on putting upgrades into it each time comes back wourse they also tell me it's the brake assist for hills but that is only for manual version still dosnt stop it from clunking on take off around corners you put pressure on and it feals like the box is slipping shifting th...Read more
