So it died, after about 5 years

published

(The receipt to prove this is an authenticate review is on the corrupted drive)
Western Digital "My Passport" 512GB bought about 5 years ago to store some personal documents on, barely used (once a year at tax time to back up all my files). When I plug it in, light still flashes but windows won't recognise it anymore, can't access files in Explorer. It states "made in Thailand" on the back. I should have known better. Would rate it -1 if I could, I have now lost a lot of data which I should have been storing in the cloud so its my mistake. I hope these companies go under now that cloud providers prove to have a (long lasting) solution for data backups. Frustrated.

Purchased in April 2021 for A$100.00.

Nothing but hassles- does not work

published

Shows up on the western digital utilities but I can't access this. Difficult to access support for WD and was sent to sandisk, no idea what's going on.

Not happy with the price and quality, for this price I'd expect a lot more. Had many HD's with minimal problems here and there but nothing like this.

$300 for a faulty device which I've spent days backing up to. Never had such problems as I've had with this device. Use at your own peril.

Purchased in November 2021 at JB Hi-Fi for A$300.00.

Works fine. USB is a bit slow - Drive has USB soldered on

published

Bought this drive to shuck for my mac. Turns out the USB is soldered onto the drive (instead of using a sata -> usb adapter). Really annoying - will not buy again.

Lightweight with 2 TB storage

published

Super light and easy to use backup device that comes in several fun colours. I chose dark blue. Its easy to carry with you and can attach it with a USB wire to your computer device. Has easy to use back up and security software and is compatible with Windows 10, 8.1 or 7. Wish it was wireless so it could connect to the computer via blue tooth but its value for money

Purchased in March 2021 at JB Hi-Fi Retail Stores for A$70.00.

I've since installed the WD Backup software on a new note book (also running Windows 10.) It actually works on this note book. WD support did try and help but I gave up as I wasn't interested in giving them remote access to the problem PC.

It appears the problem is related to older PC's eg. that have been updated from Windows7 to 10. A brand new install on a new motherboard/ CPU and it works perfectly.

Easy setup

published

Just as the guy from officeworks said plug it in and go. Only a few things to do for setup and it's all done. Very easy to use. Love the automatic backup. My laptop seems to run faster especially when logging onto the internet. Very inexpensive way to save important photos, documents - everything!!
Good price, weekly automatic backup

My Passport

Dear Folk,

I very recently purchased WD My Passport 4TB Hardrivw (Yellow colour). I have 3 older WD My Passport 4TB hard rives.

My problem.
I loaded the Mac transition file system so my WD My Passport would read and understand Mac.

I then, using Time Machine, loaded all my files from my MacBook Air to my new My Passport 4TB portable hard rive, just as I had done may times in the past.

During the transfer a popup occurred. It was to load NTFS for Mac. I did so, loading NTFS for Mac.

I completed the folders ad files transfer to my new WD My Passbook 4TB Yellow.

The problem. = I then identified several files and attempted to read them. They were Word for Mac, Adobe and Excel for Mac.

None of the files would open.

I have never seen this problem before.

Can you advise if I have done anything wrong?

PS. I know you can not work on files in WD MyPassport 4B but I did not know you could not open them.
I believe I have previously been able to open them.

Kind regards,
Patrick Crook
