Breville has rebranded their Cafe Venezia Espresso Machine to the Compact Café. The product remains otherwise the same.

Great coffee machine until it broke
This was such a great little machine. But then one day it died and there was no getting it back...
I would consider buying the same machine again though as it was so good while it lasted. It was pretty cheap so I would buy it again and just deal with it needing to be replaced every 2.5 years. Still is cheaper than buying a coffee every day1

Love this Machine - never use the milk wand
This little rocket is great, runs well, easy to operate. However, it is very loud.
We do not use the milk wand because it doesn't have much pressure. I will just heat milk on the stove. I thought it came with a blind filter so we could back flush but it didn't so I had to buy one online and also chemical cleaner.
Otherwise great machine.

My morning saviour!
I use this every morning before I head off for the day. Makes a great coffee and is easy to use. Just fill up the water at the back, press down the coffee, and froth the milk. Is really quick and easy to use. My only gripe with this product is when you turn it on initially it is really noisy. But apart from that a great machine!

Not fit for purpose.
Noisy, produces weak cold coffee - taking it back! Also find it inconvenient having to wait for it to heat the water before leaving it to do it's thing, wouldn't be too bad if it actually gave you hot coffee, but you have to put it in the microwave afterwards! Wish one could try machines out before buying.

Great machine
Really great coffee machine. Coffee tastes great from it and it's pretty easy to Clean. I found running a few cups of vinegar then water through has It sparkling like new again. Drip tray has handy toggle to let you know when to empty it. The needle for cleaning the milk sprout is hidden Away to the side so you do loose it

Great product!
This coffee machine is simple and easy to use, settings and instructions are clear and defined. The pump is strong enough as can be expected for the price point although the heating element is only an entry level item.
The basic improvements over previous Breville models are a welcome edition: ejecting single and double shot holders, clear spoon.
I'm very happy with the machine considering the price we paid.

Cheap Components, broke after 3 months
We were given this machine as a gift over Christmas which I put in the office.
Total rubbish and didn't produce good steam from day one (I've owned a few coffee machines and have a Rancilio Silvia, Gaggia Classic and Giotto Rocket at home).
Unfortunately, we don't have the receipt due to it being a gift.

Disappointed
I'm disappointed with this machine. The heating takes forever using the steam wand. I'm thinking of either taking it back or buying a separate milk frother. It takes ages, and doesn't make the milk hot enough, no matter how long I steam it for. I still have to put my coffee in the microwave. It would be no good to use with friends around, it takes about 5-6 minutes to make 1 cup of coffee including zapping it in the microwave.

Great machine, poor warranty support
The BES250 is great for anybody interested in making delicious coffee on a budget. A few crippling issues take from the rest, I'll share mine here.
The pump is nice and strong, much stronger than the delonghi Dedica. Coffee extracts at a good speed and one can use a very fine grind without causing harm.
The steamer is not as user friendly or clean operating as the Dedica. Clearing backflow on the frother is a bit of a struggle. If I could, I'd use this machine to make coffee, and the Dedica to Froth milk. But the stainless steel nozzle on...Read more
this is much nicer, and will actually render much better Froth with some practice. Heat up time is minimal, water is heated on the fly. The machine uses a lot of water as waste when purging, so the tray needs to be emptied very frequently and the water container filled often. The Dedica is more conservative, the water reservoir will last a week while the bem250 will last two days, and the tray in the bem250 will last about 3 coffees while the Dedica will last about 15. The dial and actuator became stiff after two months. Making a coffee and frothing milk suddenly becomes a chore, because the dial is so stiff it's a challenge to turn. I took it to a repairer months ago for their opinion and they scared me off with an inspection fee if the machine didn't need repair. Months later, the machine needed repair when the dial snapped. After all this time trying to make a stiff drink, the machine gave in. This occurred around 11 months after purchase.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!
The reviews of this machine are like a horror movie. The actual machine is a lot less scary.
You know, I actually read the reviews on this site -before- buying my BES250 (aka "Cafe Venezia" aka "Cafe Compact"). But it was selling for a song and a whistle, so I took a chance and... thanks a lot, guys! Your attempt to scare me off the BES250XL did not work. (See my full review of the machine on the CoffeeGeek site).
Because I was expecting it to be a real stud of a dud, I was quite surprised by how good this machine really was. It is heavy, solid, very impressive in many ways. I liked it much better than my Cafe Roma, and I love the C...Read more
afe Roma. The BES250 frothed well, has a massive tank, is overall well designed, no cheap parts, and the portafilter felt more solid than the one on my Quickmill, that's 3 times the cost. Sorry, but I've had no clogging or any such issues (yet?) with my BES250. But then, I actually KNOW how to use and clean an espresso machine. It seems a lot of the problems people are having with this are tied to the pressurized baskets. But that too is hard to understand, since the Cafe Roma uses the same baskets, far as I can tell, and the reviews are great on that model. On my Cafe Roma, I can double tamp using a grind finer than I would on my non-pressurized machines, with no blockage. Which is really shocking, since I can't do that on my Saeco pressurized machines. Still, I think given all these lousy reviews, Breville really should have included a non-pressurized basket. Do they even offer such a thing today? I don't know how available these are at present, but I do know they were available. Unfortunately, a lot of the reviews I'm reading seem to be from people who don't know how to use the machine properly, and don't read the *excellent* instructions Breville provided with the machine (I've never seen any instructions remotely as good, with an espresso machine. Two guide cards along with a full color instruction book,, come on! I actually read them too, when I was bored! They couldn't possibly be better or clearer or more detailed). Still, you can't help but think Breville must be somehow responsible in some ways at least, for the God-awful reviews of this model. And it's not just on this site. The ranking is not that good on Amazon, with over 500 reviews. Contrast that to the cheaper Cafe Roma, which has the highest reviews. If I run into problems, maybe I'll update this review (if I can...). But so far, what can I say... love the machine, it works well. I can use any grind, fine or coarse, make latte-art ready milk froth, and its a joy to operate. Easily accessible water tank, roomy drip tray. Not crazy about the aluminum head on the portafilter, since that is crazy hard to clean without discoloring (but most low-mid end machines use this material on their PF). Even less crazy about the plastic insert inside the portafilter head. Don't even know how to remove it for cleaning, since it doesn't seem to screw off. Hence this thing ain't getting a 5-star review from me. 4-stars is enough!Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Do not purchase this coffee machine
This is a terrible coffee machine. I've had to replace mine twice and have had to buy extra parts that have made zoero difference. The coffee comes out like Mud and tastes terrible. The steamer doesn't steam like it should so it takes ages to heat up the milk. You can't clean it properly as there's no manual to show you how. Waste of money

Dissapointing, not up to quality of last Breville machine
I was so happy with my old Breville Cafe Roma that I thought it was time for an update. Mine had lasted over 10yrs and still going strong aside from the steam nozzle not working now & it has started to leak water. I wanted to stick with Breville since I was so happy before however the BES250 is not even close to the Cafe Roma. The water tank is at the back so you cannot see the water level without pulling the machine out. The picture looks like it is stainless steel but very little of it is, most of it is plastic and it is bigger and bulkier ...Read more
for no gains?? Takes up more room. Seems to need a lot more water than the Cafe Roma too. I am VERY disappointed with this purchase, in fact I packed it back in the box and set the old one up again. That was legendary, cmon Breville, get it together and lets get better not go backwards!Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Very bad experience
The coffee tastes OK but on the whole the machine is terrible as the filters are constantly clogging up. I have tried grinding coarser but it still happens. We also used filtered water.
It is now stored in the back bedroom and we have (shame!!!) purchased a pod machine - not great coffe but no hassle.

Disappointed
I purchased the above coffee maker, the Breville about 2 years ago but it has been a big disappointment. It was only used periodically but even after a fee month uses the coffee beans were splattering. Follow all instructions and gave up and turned to Aldi capsules which I don't like using!
Phoned Breville and was advise the the machine needed the plastic ring changed! Referred me to a nearby repairman. It would have cost me $50 to fix it but with not much of a warranty! One advice f
rom Breville: it is in quality inexpensive machine that the company's name should shine as " Bad products give companies bad name"

Hi there,
I have just inherited this machine, and when trying to make coffee I get a fine strong jet of water spraying into the cup from the center hole instead of coming out of the two sides of the filter eject system. Sorry in advance if this is an ignorant question, but this is surely not normal. I have tried cleaning the filter but no change. What am I doing wrong?

It says you can use the spanner in the cleaning tool to take the end off the steamer to clean it. Which way does the end turn? Clockwise or anti-clockwise? It is quite tight, and I don't want to force it the wrong way!

Sorry can't help you there, I've only got the cleaning tool for the steamer wand not a spanner.
