Major Failure after 2 Years
Seemed like a good appliance until after two years of light domestic use a solenoid and the warm up system both failed. The Breville service agent charged $35 to investigate this, which is reasonable, but fixing the solenoid will cost another $238 and the warm up repair costs will require further evaluation and incur subsequent costs .So after 2 years of little use this machine's for the scrap heap.

This Machine Is Soooo Perfect I Couldn't Live Without It, Seriously!
I replaced an Aldi machine which made only ten coffees and died on me (!) with this "little Breville gem". Now, to their credit and following a complex process, Aldi reimbursed me. This "little Breville wonder" I highly recommend to anyone serious about drinking -real- cups of espresso coffee -my method below will give you a coffee BETTER than an expensive one purchased from a trendy coffee shop...-, you will achieve the best espresso money can buy, no worries at all. There are two secrets about achieving such a feat: 1) Buy quality coffee bean...Read more
s, I buy myself Illy arabica beans I mix with Vittoria Arabica beans (Special Italian Blend) found everywhere (the proportion is roughly half and half). 2) You will need a proper grinder, I use the Breville BCG820, also a "little wonder" and frankly, without it you will not achieve the same result. I set it on 1 shot/6seconds grind time/14 size grain. Enjoy a fantastic espresso, as good as any expensive one from a coffee shop, in Australia or abroad!1 comment

favourite appliance
This machine has lasted me more than 7 years. I am a caffeine addict and so was making at least 6-8 coffees a day, more on weekends!! It has served me well. The coffee was always great, the froth amazing and the instructions clear. Easy to clean, Easy to use. Definitely worth the money.

Better than Sunbeam's comparative model.
This coffee machine has been okay for us, it is much quieter than the Sunbeam cafe series one we replaced and heats faster. I don't think it will last more than 2 or 3 years though, mine is almost 12 mos. old and already leaks out of the hot water dispenser and steam wand. Pressure has decreased dramatically for the espresso pour as well, although the coffee is good enough for us non connoisseurs. We have the grinder to match it and that works great.

It is a great budget coffee machine, who like to get their hands on it. Good for beginner.
It is a great budget coffee machine, who like to get their hands on it. Good for beginner. Very happy about it. So far so good.
The gaguage can allow you to improve your skills. The water tank is big. However the steamer is a bit slow once you get to know how to use it.

Best investment ever
Bought for hubby when old one died. This was an upgrade and hummed and hahhed when considering, due to price. The coffee is the same quality, taste every time. It is easy to use as I learnt easily (couldnt get consistent coffee in last one). Well worth the money spent.

Revolutionised Coffee time at my sons house.
We purchased this model plus the grinder for our son for Christmas.
It has revolutionised coffee time at their house, they no longer buy coffee out, no more unrecyclable coffee cups.
They were amazed @ how great coffee can taste. Great little machine with lots of great features.
We are very happy with this machine

Great compact machine and consistently produces a good quality coffee.
I bought this machine 2nd hand (so I can't vouch for it's history, previous amount of use/abuse, or whether it was looked after/serviced). It gave me 18months of loyal service and produced a very good coffee with consistent results. It's compact so it doesn't take up a lot of room. It eventually broke (some sort of internal problem) and would not pass water through the group head - I was happy to accept this because I had bought it 2nd hand for only $90 from an individual on eBay. While it was working I found the machine to be excellent. ...Read more
Despite the fact that it eventually broke (all things do) I still give it 5 stars. I went on to buy the Breville Dual Boiler BES920 (for the fact it has 2 boilers and I could steam my milk at the same as pulling a shot) and found the quality of the coffee to be equal between both machines (although the Dual Boiler - at a big jump in price - does allow for a lot more customisation of termperatures, times, auto-on, etc). The BES840 is a great compact machine, well built and good quality. I would recommend it to anyone who was considering an espresso machine.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

A Dud - if you want it to last beyond the warranty period
I purchased the Breville Infuser BES840 from JB HiFi online on 27 July 2015 for $399.00. CHOICE reviewed the machine well and it was on their recommended buy list, hence my purchase. Initially I was very pleased with the machine and on 18 September 2016 I wrote a review on Product Review titled "Very Happy With This Coffee Machine".
Alas, in December 2016 the 2 cup program setting pour failed. I persevered with a manual stop/start over the Christmas period and on 11 January 2017 (I contacted Breville Customer Support. I rang twice and spoke ...Read more
to two different representatives and I was told the same story - Bad Luck, out of warranty, take it to the repairer at Seven Hills NSW, but first try factory default settings, which worked on and off for a week or so. I persisted for some time after, but I got increasingly annoyed as a failure after such a short time told me the $400.00 machine "wasn't fit for purpose". NSW Fair Trading suggested i contact the supplier, which I did by online email on 3 March 2017. I was then invited to take the machine to JB HiFi Castle Towers on 7 March who offered to send it off to the repairer, cost of repairs to be borne by me. The machine was dispatched 14 March. I heard nothing. Apparently JB HiFi was notified of the repair quote but I heard nothing. I followed up the status of the repair with the repairer who advised me of the cost of the repairs, which were completed on 18 April. I paid for and collected the machine on 20 April (6+ weeks after my first contact with JB HiFi). Still annoyed, I registered a Complaint with NSW Fair Trading, who promptly interceded on my behalf resulting in an equally prompt response from JB HiFI and a refund of the $106.00 cost of repairs - i.e. replacement of the Flow Meter (item cost: $26.58). Fantastic coffee machine
This is my first coffee machine with a PID and it seems to make a massive difference. The coffee tastes great with no bitterness.
There are lots of nice touches including the hidden accessories tray under the drainage tray.
I thoroughly recommend this model, although sadly it appears to have been phased out now

Pressure gauge does not work
I bought this machine second hand; but looks as if it's hardly been used.
Checked rubber seal ok. Pressure gauge doesn't move; what would be causing this please. Many other people have had the same problem; some say blockage in water line to group head and others to replace selenoid ? Can you do either of these yourself if ordering the parts . Don't really want to spend more than $100 on fixing,as I bought this at bargain price .

Great value on sale when matched with a non-Breville grinder
My review of the Breville 840XL Infuser.
I have had this machine (V1) for close to 4 years, and it does the job. It goes on sale occasionally for under 400 C$ (300 US$). At the sale price (as opposed to the 650 list price), with the newer version V2 since 2014 with modifiable PID setting, its the best machine by far that you can buy at that price. Mine has been reliable (now the solenoid is showing signs of failure, but its a $100 fix), I have not changed any seals, steam is good but slow (compared to a boiler/hx machine) but works well - its...Read more

Fantastic machine, and coffee, at an affordable price
I love my coffee, but not just any coffee. Medium bodied, flavourful with character. Not just dark roasted, bitter, tastes like hard coffee.
I've had a Nespresso for years and as my taste for coffee grew, I decided it was time to get a proper Espresso machine.
Now you'd think for $475 retail that this little machine (and it does look little compared to similar machines at this price) would be adequate, maybe just above average. It's so much better than that. PID Infusion is huge at this price point, as is the Thermoblock Coil (most machine...Read more

Brilliant PID machine that makes very very good coffee. It has won me.
Note to BREVILLE at end of Review. I will be informing Consumer Affairs of your representatives conduct.
My Saeco via Venezia died after 3 years. Was happy with it, good coffee for the price point but decided to move up to the BES840. Why is it an upgrade? Because this model like the BES870 and above has a PID. Like the 870 it has a smaller 57mm portafilter than the BES900/920 but it doesn't seem to make a difference.
So does a PID make significant change to coffee taste/brewing on a single boiler/steamer machine? Unequivocally yes. I j...Read more
ust returned a BES900 twin boiler and it was no better than what I've been using now. Is the pressure gauge accurate. Yes, but it works symptomatically. That is, if your grind has issues too fine or too coarse, tamped way too hard or soft, used the single basket, it will be reflected in the pressure gauge being way off. Don't blame the machine - change what you are doing until you get it right. You must experiment. I don't have super equipment (& will agree was too easily pleased with the Via Venezia) but my grinder is a mid range metal burr stepless Lelit pl 53. I have it quite fine. But if I change (for example from an Italian coffee bean like Lavazza Oro to say Vittoria) I tighten the grind 13 turns to maintain pressure consistency reflected in the gauge. The BES840 makes superb coffee. I've had it 2 years, make 4 or 5 double baskets a day.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Machine produces too much ground coffee on lowest setting
After owning and using this machine nearly every day for 9 months I find two big annoyances.
Firstly the machine grinds more coffee than is required even with the grind amount dial set to the lowest. I then have to trim the dose using the razor device to ensure the correct amount of ground coffee is in the filter cup - this is very wasteful of expensive coffee beans.
Secondly it is necessary to change the grind size (how fine the ground coffee is) when making one cup (using the one cup filter cup) compared to when making 2 cups. When I make 2...Read more

Hi John - please contact customer service on 1300 139 798 (Mon to Fri, 9 to 5) regarding returning the unit to the place of purchase. Thanks, the Breville team
Please confirm that I return the unit to place of purchase and not a Breville service centre. Also what happens when I return to place of sale. Do they arrange for the unit to be sent to Breville for repair or do they exchange. Thanks

Problems after 12 months
Coffee quality was good and we were happy with the machine... until 15 months after purchase when the water failed to stop running after the shot. The machine basically only has manual function now which isn't good at all. Very disappointed to see a $500 coffee machine only last a bit over a year. Customer support were friendly but couldn't really help. I hope someone from Breville reads these reviews.

No pre infusion registering
Can't get a good coffee because the pre infusion process doesn't appear to be happening at all. Then no matter what grind etc there is no reading on the dial above pre infusion during extraction?. No instructions on this in the manual supplied with the machine. Have used half kilo of coffee trying to get a result

Consistent, customisable, fantastic.
Coupled with the Breville Smart Grinder, this thing is a beast. Very consistent, always a good drop, shot runs even with thick crema. The steam heat up system could be improved, however the wand itself works well, just requires a little bit of time. Worth noting - a friend also has one of these, but used pre ground beans - the results were very, very poor. Definitely get the grinder too.

Great machine for the price
If you are newbie & want a manual machine to make real espresso coffee you cannot go past this machine.
I have had this machine for well over a year now & it works great. We make around 10 coffees a day on it, approximately a kilo a week of coffee. The water tank is good, not great however you get by.
It does use a lot of water, the water tray seems to be always full however it does make it up by making a great espresso.
Bang for buck you cant go wrong

Since I got my machine a week ago whenever I make a shot the pressure dial barely moves at all just a few little notches. So I ran a 1 cup filter through the machine with just water and I t didn’t move a bit. Why no pressure? I have made about 7-8 cups of espresso and not one of them have moved the pressure gauge more than a few notches.

I returned home from a trip and after the caretakers left, I went to make a coffee. I turned the power on and nothing happened except the power button kept blinking. No noise from the machine. I checked the water tank and it was empty, so I refilled it and tried again. Still nothing. I wonder if they had run the machine out of water and something burned out. I'm not handy but could try to troubleshoot if anyone has thoughts. My pressure needle hasn't worked in over a year, but I was still able to get coffee. I have cleaned on a regular basis, and have had no other problems in 5 years of using this machine. Is it worth it to try and fix it or should I try for a new machine? I figure $100/year for 5 years has more than got my money's worth, but I'd still love to try and fix it!
