Poor customer service and lack of follow up
I submitted a claim due to part of our domestic holiday accommodation needing to be cancelled due to the recent bush fires on Kangaroo Island. After two weeks I was asked to provide our entire three week trip itinerary even though I was only claiming five days accommodation cancellation costs due to the emergency level bush fires in the region we were meant to travel.

wever when I’m told by claims service staff when calling that “they don’t know how long it will take to assess my claim and to keep calling back” this is unacceptable. I have never experienced such poor service from a travel insurer in the past. Very very disappointed and will not use budget direct again.

Worthless policy
Yes its in the fine print but a 24 hour delay in my flight and only just being able to make a wedding with a three year old is not good enough to trigger insurance to help us. Just a waste of money

Yes an exclusion that means a 24 hour delay to a four day holiday really means your policy is worthless and should be marketed as such.

Avoid at all Costs - Policy has no practical real world value
At the beginning, when they take your money, it is all sunshine and circuses but as soon as you make a claim the dark clouds roll in.
Don't be fooled by the PDS, it has a couple of pages on what is covered by the insurance then scattered throughout the numerous pages in the rest of the document what is not. And let me tell you, pretty much everything you thought was covered in the beginning is excluded by the time you get to the end. be used as reasons to reject a claim. I made claim after my father died while I was on a domestic trip. Even before I had supplied all the requested paperwork my claim was rejected. That's right they didn't bother waiting to get all the facts, my claim was rejected before they had all the information. Then trying to get information from Budget Direct (actually Allianz who handle the claims) was almost impossible. Trying to negotiate the review process was appalling. They don't reply to emails, they fail to meet their own service standards, they only return calls once a week on a Friday afternoon so if you miss them that is it for at least 7 days. When you call them you are shunted though three layers of service staff only to be told they will get back to you with a letter 'next week'. So keep away from Budget Direct, it is simply not worth your money to buy insurance from them.6 comments

Cheapest and covers all my needs
Good value and cheapest when comparing all required cover aspects. Will only be used in December. Has not yet been necessary to make any claims and hopefully none will be.

Best on offer
The offer was good value, this is the first time we have used budget, it will not be the last as we intend to do more traveling in the coming years, cruising, train trips, buses etc. As we increase in years we need to see as much as we can.

Great for basic domestic travel insurance
Very easy and simple to quote and buy. I was after basic cover so this was perfect for my quick family domestic holiday (there is probably more comprehensive cover but I wasn't looking for that). It was very inexpensive too and was the cheapest I found.

Came in handy on recent trip.
Have used Budget Direct many times for domestic travel. Great value, quick and easy to buy. Made a claim because of flight cancellation and claim settled within 10 days.
