Makes water taste bad

published

There’s something wrong with these kettles causing the water to taste bad - like chlorine or metal/plastic taste. Have cleaned it out repeatedly and it’s still doing it. While it looks okay and boils quickly, the bad taste is a real concern, as shared by other reviewers. Don’t buy this one (black plastic Contempo 1.7L)

Purchased in March 2021 at Big W for A$15.00.

Water tastes like plastic

published

The water tastes awful like plastic and leaves an after taste in your mouth, we have had the kettle for 4 weeks and decided to discard it and advise others as this cannot be good for our health.

Purchased in December 2021 for A$15.00.

Disgusting tasting water

published

Have cleaned this kettle out numerous times and still when you boil water it has a disgusting metalic taste, doesn't matter whether it is good looking or easy to read when the water tastes so vile you cannot use it. Very concerned the metalic taste is dangerous so stopped using it

Purchased in February 2021 at Big W Retail Stores.

Don't waste your money

published

There is a plastic taste in the water and after boiling there is a plastic almost kerosene type residue on the top of the water. We have tried boiling approximately 30 times and it is still there. I have noticed several other reviews that give it 4 stars but my experience is bad.

Poor quality

published

Three complaints - had this jug for one week before throwing it out. The kettle oozed a very dark coloured vapour after a few days of use. Boiling point cut out too quickly for a decent cuppa. Plastic taste to the water. So no be wary you only get what you pay for!!!

Plastic taste from new

published

It keeps tasting like plastic after 1 week and only using cold water to fill. It's terrible and I don't want the baby using water from this jug. I think this is why she isn't drinking her bottles properly lately. I am returning it today for a refund! I would not advise anyone to purchase this product.

Great kettle, great price!

published

We bought our white plastic contempo kettle about 6 months ago for less than $20 from Big W. It gets used several times every day and has been faultless. No plastic taste. Its as "quiet" or quieter than our previous "whisper quiet" kettles that cost muchmore. It boils a full jug in an acceptable time too.
It cleaned up a treat with water and vinegar, just like new. If it dies we'll buy another.

Good kettle - great price

published

I purchased this kettle from Big W 8 months ago and cannot fault it. Quick to boil and nice looking. Much better than the more expensive big brands I've had before. I've had no plastic aftertaste as mentioned in other reviews and there has been no leaking from the base of the appliance.

I'd certainly purchase this kettle again.

Edit May 2017. I had to take this kettle back to Big W as it would not shut off. Fortunately it was still under warranty and I received a new one. Time will tell if this fault is one that all their kettles have.

Water tastes funny

published

Bought this kettle 6 weeks ago. Having issues with the taste of water, cleaned it out and put in citric acid clean still has a funny taste to the water. Have done this every week for the past two weeks still tastes odd. Very fast to boil. Would not recommend.

Great kettle, too bad it's rusting

published

Great performance, cooks very fast and without issues, too bad the quality of the materials is sub par.
Rust on the top and outside of the kettle where there's a little scratch, so going to bring it back today. Lost my receipt so will see what they say about that.

Excellent kettle. Superb Value for money

very silent kettle. very well made for its price. the kettle to base attachment is smooth/easy. can't fault it for $20 (plain) or $25 (red) and comes with 2 year warranty!

Relatively quiet and quick shut off at boil- but rust appearing at top of jug.

published

Doesn't drip, cuts off promptly, is not too noisy, good water gauge, BUT it is rusting around the top of the kettle - under the lid, in the joint where the spout is attached and around the hinge where it joins the lid. Looks like Woolworths have compromised a good design with substandard stainless steel.

Great kettle, great price!

published

Have had this new kettle (beautiful red one!) for a week now. Absolutely no complaints. I was worried it might drip when pouring, but it doesn't. Super quiet and super quick.

Perfectly good!

published

Big W's new Contempo appliances range looked good and their prices, even better. We took a risk (being that there are no reviews on this brand as yet) and I'm happy with our kettle.
The brushed stainless steel looks just as nice as our previous Russell Hobbs and Breville kettles. The Contempo is much quieter, lighter in weight and I like the light-up on/off switch.
You can wrap the cord under the base, to shorten the length, which is fairly standard, but very useful.
Overall, it's attractive and is an excellent product, especially for the low price of $25.
(Note, you pay $4 more for the coloured stainless steel kettles.)

Questions & Answers

David E

David Easked

Why does this kettle leave a plastic taste in the water, as noted in several reviews? Is this safe or is it toxic? We followed the instructions and despite multiple boil then empty and refill cycles, it still has a horrible taste. Our water is not the problem - it’s definitely something wrong with these kettles.
