Classic for a reason
The Gaggia Classic. A little legend of home coffee making. After breaking Sunbeam and Breville coffee machines in a little over a year, I decided to go for a simple, elegant, repairable and modifiable machine. And boy, am I ever glad I did.
I purchased my Classic nearly two years ago and it is pumping out about eight perfect shots of coffee a day. It hasn't missed a beat.
As with any coffee machine, your results will only be as good as your grinder allows. Buying a great coffee machine but a poor grinder will only allow poor coffee t...Read more
o be made. The Classic is simple. It is not automatic. There is no onboard computer. The internals are simple. You can repair it easily should it break down. If you understand how to make coffee, you will appreciate this simplicity as it gives you control to make coffee to your full potential. Unfortunately, the newer releases of the Classic are not up to coffee snob standards. Gaggia have dumbed down the Classic for the masses, and as a result, the quality of the shot is compromised. It is a sad chapter for this giant of the home coffee world.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Product name says it all!
It is a classic I bought one approximately 16 years ago! It died a few years ago ... so I thought, but later, after wasting money on a Breville I found out that you still get easily all spare parts for reasonable price! ...the machine was easily fixed and runs again since 2 years without issues ... no circuit board that can fail, only rocker switches and basic mechanic ...the basic mechanism might not be everyones taste who believes in coffe making apps for their mobile, but if you know how this machine makes an excellent coffee and it lasts!
no circuit board that will fail after 2 years... robust and lasting mechanism... making coffee with such a basic machine becomes a rewarding procedure!

Great coffee!
Bought on ebay for $240,which i think is pretty good.
The machine is well made and easy to use.
Minimilst in design which i like, with only a couple of buttons and a steam dial on the side.
I bought a burr grinder and some fresh campos coffee beans, and have since been making pretty satisfying coffee.
Best to leave it on for a couple of mins before use.
Makes lovely hot coffee, better than the breville i used to have
Water tank is easy to fill, group handle is solid and heavy.
makes great coffee easy
nothing if you want simple manual operation

Great coffee
This is a really good coffee machine, if you know how to make coffees already. The group is heavy and good quality, but the steaming wand is not as robust as I would like, sometimes under pressure it slips off. It's simple to clean and refill the water, and the tray is easy to clean also.
Easy to clean, good coffee
The plastic on the steaming wand can slip off under pressure, but only occasionally.

Great for a Novice
I was apprehensive about buying my first coffee machine. I love good coffee, but didn't really know how to make it or what to buy. After some research, I decided to pay a bit extra for the Gaggia Classic and am happy that I did. Friends comment that it produces wonderful "crema". I am just happy to be able make a great flat white every time.
I have had no problems with coffee spurting out from underfilling. The frothing wand works easily to produce steaming, frothy milk. I do agree with another review that the milk jug can't fit under the f...Read more
rothing wand. However my Gaggi is near the edge of the bench so it is not a problem for me. I have owned it for over a year now and my only real problem is limiting how much coffee I now drink. Quality product, easy to use, produces great coffeeSimilar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!
Good
A fantastic, simple machine that we would recommend. We have had ours for several years and only now has it started leaking around the group head. A pretty good effort, considering we worked out that it has delivered approx. 3000+ coffees.
We have been more than happy with our machine. It makes a excellent coffee with a nice crema. It has been reliable for the last 4 yrs.
When having visitors over, we have found it has trouble keeping up with heat for frothing more than one jug of milk. Mugs will not fit under the group head.

Awesome little machine that makes perfect coffee once you get used to it
This is great little machine and I should stress that it makes fantastic coffee but it does have a few annoyances that is worth considering especially if you don't have much experience making coffee.
Pros-
Easy to use for the most part
Looks great and doesn't take up a heap of space
Really does make awesome, awesome coffee. Both my wife and I have worked in many cafes making coffee and this really does compare with a professional coffee and depending on the cafe makes better.

Good, but has a design fault - should actually be called Vesuvius!
This would be a great espresso machine, but for a fundamental design fault. Unless you pack the coffee holder really tight with coffee it spurts coffee everywhere except the cup. You then spend the next 20 minutes wiping coffee off the surfaces of everything in your kitchen. I have had the machine for almost a year now and about a third to a half of the time I have this problem and it really annoys me. I have complained about this to the shop where I bought it and, although the staff there have been helpful, their basic message is that it is my...Read more
fault not the machine's. Well, maybe - but I would maintain that a machine should not be so unforgiving of variations in end-user operation. I have a Rancilio in my other house and it never does this - so the problem would therefore appear to be the machine rather than the operator. If I really fill the coffee holder and pack it down really hard - with the holder so full that I can barely put the arm into position without a real struggle, it works okay. Anything less and it is Vesuvius, not Gaggia! Excellent, inexpensive machine - when it works properly Spurts coffee all over the kitchen if you happen to underfill the coffee holder4 comments
Also maybe change the basket to unpressurised. This will help the coffee to run more smoothly :)

Same design since the 70s, Gaggia must have got something right
We've had our Classic for over 6 years now and it's still going strong. It takes plenty of abuse, and makes at least two coffees everyday. You do the maths, that's about 4000 coffees. Occasional service and descale every now and then, can't complain!!
It's a perfect, good quality starters machine. The group handle is heavy and brass and solid. And it has a nice simple interface.
Invest in a good grinder and you will be rewarded. The rule that coffee snobs go by is that you should spend as much on your grinder as your machine. We were usin...Read more
g a cheaper burr grinder for many years and recently upgraded to a rancilio rocky (roughly same price as the classic) and the classic has also stepped up a gear (looks like it was being held back by the grinder). I home roast my own beans so we always have fresh beans!! The upgrade bug has been nibbling away at me, but this machine still makes good coffee, so we stick with it. The steaming wand (drawing steam from single boiler) is what lets it down, as it is hard to get a really velvety texture, but to really get that you need to step up to the next level of machine (with a double boiler or heat exchanger) and pay accordingly. Still gets 5 stars because of the price point.2 comments

Good
We've had our Classic for over 5 years now - and we are very happy with it. It is a solid (if not slightly clunky looking) machine with a solid/heavy group head. It makes great coffee and we have never had any mechanical issues with it (other than needing a replacement group head seal which should be expected). We are thinking about changing it now to something that looks a bit more retro/funky but based on shopping around I don't think we'll find anything with the same build quality/robustness.
Build Quality, Durability, nice crema on shots
Can overheat if left on for a long time - can then produce a burnt coffee

Very reliable
This was the first machine we bought and we have loved it. Very reliable, consistent coffee. I agree with the others that the steam wand could be better placed/angled. We only had one thing go wrong with it in the last 7 years - some inside piece needed replacing ($50). Can't complain about this one!
Reliable, consistent, solid.

Simple, Functional and Stylish
My son bought the Classic Gaggia for me on Mother's Day 4 years ago. Easy to use and a 'no nonsense' type of machine. He was never a coffee drinker before, but looks forward to his morning coffee ever since the Gaggia. We haven't had any issues with the machine, it's as good as the day it was bought.
I love the simplicity of it. It's not 'gadgity' so less can go wrong . I also love that the Gaggia Classic is smaller than many others, taking up less space. It's very modern looking too, with clean black/chrome lines.

Brilliant little machine!
Bought a brand new one on eBay for $400 including shipping from the UK, much cheaper than Aus retail stores. All that was needed was an adapter plug to fit in our sockets ($5-$15). Keep in mind that purchasing this way usually means no warranty but some sellers will offer one.
This machine makes excellent coffees and is very simple to use. The second coffee I ever made using this machine was as good as the majority of cafes in Sydney, and that was using cheap supermarket coffee. With a grinder and quality fresh roasted beans this machine can...Read more
deliver perfect coffees all day every day. Excellent value for money. It heats up very quickly, looks great on the bench and is easy to clean. One downside is that its so compact that you can't fit a mug under the filterholder (you can by removing the drip tray but that would get messy). Best to use short coffee cups. Also the steam wand is difficult to use, and occasionally small drops of coffee will spit out of the filterholder and land on the bench. Reliable, inexpensive if you shop smart, looks great, quality material, fast, easy to clean, parts easily accessible as this model is popular. And most importantly, beautiful coffees! May be a bit too small if you insist on using a mug. Awkward steam wand.5 comments
Update: after nearly 2 years of daily use, this machine is still going strong and working perfectly.
Nearly 4 years on and my machine is still going strong. Never had a problem with it.

A little ripper
I love my little Gaggia Classic. It fits perfectly in our small kitchen as it is really compact. It produces a great shot once you have got the hang of it and it's not too hard to figure it out. Just make sure that you turn off the steamer before you make another shot as you are unable to use the steamer and make coffee at the same time. Made this mistake once and ended up with a burnt coffee.
The steam wand is useless, but we will replace it for a Rancilio one. Not sure why they sell them like that??

a perfect "hot" coffee, even though it doesn't have a thermometer. I love how compact the machine is. It produces a great shot and we were able to get it for a great price from Saeco Outlet Shop. It was a repacked model, but it was in perfect condition when we got it. The machine looks tough and hopefully will last with not too many dramas. The steam wand is it's only real let down. The foaming device is pathetic and froths the milk way too much, so at the moment I'm just using the stubby bit. We will be buying a Rancilio Silivia steam wand soon though. Also you can only use smaller mugs to make the coffee, but that's not a big deal to me.5 comments

Made my husband very happy!!!
I had been trying to talk my husband into buying a new coffee machine for a while, but as over the years we had purchased a number of these that just ended up staying in the cupboard he was reluctant to spend money on another one. I did plenty of research and finally convinced him that the Gaggia classic had plenty of good reviews and we decided this would be our Christmas present to each other.

ste. We also purchased a Gaggia MDF coffee grinder and have found this to be most useful in making the perfect coffee. Neither of us are big cappuccino drinkers although on Christmas Day we were able to impress our family with perfectly frothed cappuccinos. We found the jug didn't fit under the milk frother, so we purchased a 2 inch thick cutting board to put under the machine. We now have no problems. We have not made a single instant coffee since our purchase. Easy to use, easy to clean, makes a perfect coffee, good price. Can't fit the jug under the milk frotherSimilar opinion? Good For the Price
Produces a consistent expresso, with good crema. Obvious flaw is that you can't express coffee and foam milk at the same time. Still, for the price, it's an excellent machine, and to get better coffee will cost over double.
Consistent expresso, good crema, easy to maintain and clean.
Can either use the foamer or pour coffee - not both.

Perfect for the home barista
I've got the machine for about 3 years now and still makes perfect coffee every shot pulled. I have made some modifications to the steam wand by removing the stock "panarelo" and replacing it with a $20 wand from Coffeeparts.com.au and now I can texture the milk to make the best rosettas and hearts. Steaming is a bit tricky as you have to time when the boiler is on (this is when the boiler ready light is off). I normally pump water into the boiler, count to ten then start steaming the milk. It takes about 30 seconds.
Every week I make sure...Read more

Good
It's a very reliable machine like all manual Gaggia machines that I've owned. I think I have 4 Baby Gaggias, 1 Gaggia Classic and have owned La Pavoni, San Remo, Atomic and a few others. The Classic is pretty much bulletproof. If something breaks parts are available. I reckon it's the best value domestic machine available.

What's with the little black plug in the bottom of the filter holder?

Hi Yve. I'm not sure what it's called but you get a better crema with it in. I have the thin end in the outlet. It's sort of like one of those widgets the put in Guinness beer.

I would like to ask..."what material is the heating tank made of?..I had a coffee gaggia in the 1980's and after about 12 years the electrics went all brittle so I decided to tear it apart to check the heating tank..lo and behold it was aluminium and was corroded badly and there was tons of aluminium dust at the bottom..this is what I was drinking?
I hope before you purchase one ask if the heating tank is alum.. or stainless. Go for stainless if you can get it.

Mine is alloy. I believe they are now stainless steel.
