The systems are fine in the Bairnsdale region. Being close to the sea, you've got reasonably good temperatures all year.

if you purchase through chromagen they do the lot i only had to pay them $250 and that was because my unit was older

You just sign them over to the retailer on the day of installation. In my case Chromagen did everything.

Hi Anthony. We have the 280L Midea Heat Pump. Purchased April 2016. Our neighbours purchased exactly the same unit around September 2016. In November 2017 both units showed a "P3" error. Both units required the replacement of a sensor. Individual cost for for labour and parts was $180 each. Our local agent where we purchased the Midea Heat Pump from, (on their recommendation, over Bosch our first choice), said the P3 error was emerging as a common problem and that the supplier of the Chromagen Midea Heat Pump would not replace under warranty or any other goodwill gesture. However, that is the only problem we have had. Overall at this present time we are happy with our purchase of the Midea Heat Pump especially when compared to our gas hot water system which only ever supplied lukewarm water at the best of times (four years old at time of replacing). The Midea Heat Pump has saved $$, had no issues with running out of hot water and proven to be a lot more cost effective as we are able to place it in holiday mode when travelling. The initial outlay to purchase and install was $3520.91 - $1073.00 (Rebate) + $352.09 (GST) = $2,800.00 what we had to pay.

What is the anticipated lifespan of these units fitted up externally? Do they need the sunlight direct? Our current system is situated externally beside the house and the fence and never gets the sun. Is this a problem at all?

On average 12 years. Also, that would not be a problem.

plumber told me expect 10yrs + the unit does not need direct sunlight as it takes the heat out of ambient outside temps using heat pump with back up element if temps under 4c

Hi, had a 170L Midea Heat Pump installed 3 months ago. As the summer started in NSW & its only 2 users I did setup temperature at 40C . It works great. We shower on hot water on only. Timer is OFF & we run Eco mode.
Question please?
How to run disinfection function? Is it automatic? Or does it need to be preset? I know it heats up to 65C.
As we are on time of use tariff, I would to run it at night.

Overall its great little machine.

Jerry

hi Jerry. i understand the disinfect mode is automatic and it does it every 7 days no matter what setting.it shows a tear like symbol when in disinfect. otherwise will be extinguished.as for running it on o/night on heat pump (eco mode)it is probably more economic through the day as it absorbs heat from the ambient temp which is warmer in the day, it would possibly cost more to run through night on low tariff rate than daytime tariff on most nights.maybe a call to chromagen for confirmation on disinfect mode would be a good idea.hope this helps ?

Jerry, if the tear like symbol does not show up on the LED panel, the disinfect is turned off. On page 5 of the instrution book 1/2 way down the page is a group of micro switchs. You will find only 1 group of switchs not the4 as showen in the book. If you have the 2150watt element So you will need SW2-1 should be off andSW3-2 should be on. This should turn the disinfect on and the heating element on. Because they do the disinfecting at 23.00 hours every 7 days, i set the clock 12 hours out so it does the disinfect at 11.00 hours just befor lunch time to catch the sunshine. Hope this helps.

how do you change the temperature on the water heater?

hi bruno. never had to change mine on default heat pump set up, turns on at 55c or below and off at 62/63c. But i understand once you have unlocked the set up system you turn it on then press mode button to change temp with up and down arrows, up to 65c i think, but unsure if on other modes.why would you want to change default temps? as system will only let 50c into house anyway and turn on automatically outside these temps? hope this helps, if you have a manual, instructions are in there or you can download a free manual online. cheers trev

Re the chromagen midea 170 l..is the unit fairly standard in size, is it noisy as I have seen several comments on other sites claiming it's noisy and does it really save money on your electicity bill?

2 answers
snakeman
snakeman

hi .its is the quietest hot water heat pump around, about the same noise as fridge or small split system air con, its at the back of our house outside and honestly we never hear it unless walking close or past it.its only 170lt so not too big.(designed for 2/3 people but many have more in family and just works harder ) we run it through the day (turns off when at max temp on heat pump only) as we have it set on timer for daytime only(clock needs resetting if you have a power cut but on/off timer remains set)so no noise at all at night,we have solar, so it is virtually free hot water but yes it is very economical even on day rate electricity compared to night rate electric hot water storage. eg on heat pump setting (economy) turns on at 55c off at 62c if not on timer.on average days takes 2-3hrs to heat from cool.uses 700watts compared to 3500watts night electric heater so yes we find it very economical.we do find that it is now mandatory for anti scold valve to be fitted so although heats to 62/65c only lets 50c hot water into house which takes a bit of getting used to but definatly safer for older and younger people. So far i'm impressed. how long will it last?how long is a piece of string lol? hope this helps trevor

Ronnie
Ronnie

We run it on heat pump only and I only hear it when I am standing within 3-5 meters from it. It's next to a bedroom wall at my house and about 3 meters from a window (which is around a corner) and cannot be heard inside at all. When I had it installed my house was electric only and it lowered my power bill by about $300 a quater (In Vic).

What is cheaper to run ? we have 315litre on off peak...18cents kw .our bill is average $35 for the hot water (this is for our ensuite)two adults showering once a day . there is a spa that we will use occasionally . what will our cost be wth this unit ?my husband has at least 20 min shower . good water pressure .

2 answers

hey there,is that $35 per month? presume so as mine was about $100 a quarter and only 2 of us,having solar and chromagen heatpump working at its best through the day(higher power rates if not using solar) its almost cost free to me.However 20 minute showers and 170ltr service would possibly work out dearer unless you have a solar system? but almost certainly you would run out of water with smaller system it takes about 1 hour to pull back 5c of heat when water is not being used, maybe not a good idea for you?

Chez
Chez

Thanks. Yes l think so . we are going to get a new rheem 315litre and stay with night rate .

Do you set the timer ?

snakeman
snakeman

i understand it can be set to run daytime only? best time to have it running is when the suns up higher as it works better and more economical, if you have solar too you get just about free hot water. try setting between 9am and 9pm and set on economy mode (heat pump only)it will only come on when water needs boost, just be aware having baths uses heaps of hot water and its only a small unit, hope this helps

We have just installed a Chromagen Midea heat pump 6 months ago. For some reason it has started using the element to heat the water? All we did was change the timer for the disinfect cycle to start at 11am instead of 11pm as per the instruction manual. Not sure why the element is coming on instead of compressor? How do we get it off the element as it is using heaps of power unnecessarily or is there a problem with the unit? Thanks.
