Frustration over reheating
I have always used Sunbeam irons and decided to have a change with the Phillips Azur GC4855. I could not stand the heat up process which starts almost as soon as you use the iron, it takes some time then to come back to the set temperature.I put the iron in the cupboard and used the old one again, trying the Phillips again now and it will go back in the cupboard! Frustrating. Filling it is a pain and I have overfilled it twice, can't see when it is full. All in all I found it very disappointing.

Great, with one exception
I'm very pleased with the performance of this iron, except for one annoying problem. Every now and then the cut-out light starts flashing and the iron cools down, even though I'm still using it. Moving it about, as advised in the 'Problem' pages doesn't work and I have to switch the iron off and on again before I can continue. This is extremely annoying.

Back to Philips
An iron that irons, with ease! :)
What can I say about this iron, its brilliant! We initially had a Philips iron of a similar model (6 years ago) and replaced it with various Sunbeam/s and Kambrook/s and now have gone back to the Philips, we should have not steered away to try the "other" models.
With the correct settings (variable steam settings) and iron board cover (using a Heat Reflective Metallic Finish padded cover), found you can get away with ironing on side for pants and sleeves.

Getting more and more disappointed in the Philips Irons
We have had a number of Philips irons since getting married almost 15 years ago. They always come highly recommended thru choice. We have had to replace 2 due to dropping them on the tiles (they aren't made of rubber lol), But the last 3 have slowly lost their heat after about 2 years and the one we have now has just stopped getting any heat at all and it would be barely 18 months old, the blue light comes on momentarily and then off, with no heat! For the price I am paying I expect a whole lot better and am thinking of another brand.
I really hope the 2 I bought at the same time as gifts for friends don't do the same thing.

The settings dial broke off.
We have had this iron for 12 months now and it irons our clothes really well. The ionic steam function is great, although it's a thirsty iron. Recently the temperature dial popped out and now the setting is stuck on high. We'll have to now arrange for the iron to be repaired.
The ionic steam function is great
The iron is a bit on the heavy side and the temperature dial broke off.

Well worth the price
I have had this iron for almost a year and it's fantastic. I was using an older Philips Azur model that was quite a few years old, but it had started causing electrical problems so it was time to upgrade. This iron is at the higher end of the price range but if you can afford it, I highly recommend it. It has cut down my ironing time significantly and does a better job than my old iron. The iconic steam function really does make a difference to heavily creased clothe, although the button is in a really annoying spot on the handle - I often turn...Read more
it on without meaning to, but I still love this iron! It is quite heavy so it may not suit people with an injury or those who want something light, but I'm happy with the extra weight as I think it helps with ironing out creases. It does everything well, including cargo pants, polyester dress trousers and heavy cotton business shirts (my husband works in a courtroom so his uniform has to be spot on). I'm sorry to hear that other people have had bad experiences with this iron, maybe they got a dud straight out of the box. I've been fortunate to have no issues with mine. Has reduced my ironing time, nice big water tank, iconic steam makes a difference to very creased clothes Iconic steam button is positioned in an awkward spot and can be turned on accidentally, but no big dealSimilar opinion? This iron works well. We are ironing clothes faster than our last iron. It was reasonably priced. That’s exactly what we wanted. If you want lots more detail, read more. There are so many to choose from, some info really helps.
This is a GC4855. Get the right model!

d a need to iron delicates. My wife does and has had no issues. Just business shirts, shorts and jeans/trousers for me. That’s our perspective. We were prepared to spend from $25 to $150 as long as we got an iron that worked and lasted longer than a week. The Philips irons better and faster than the Sunbeam. It has slightly bigger surface area and a better steam method. The cord is shorter at only about 2.5 metres but still reaches OK for us. An extension cord isn’t a drama but it’s nice not to need one. The iron is about the same weight as the Sunbeam and both of us find it fine. Heavy enough to work and light enough to not tire out wrists (I’m not worried but the wife is a tad more petite than me). It has all the features the Sunbeam had (auto cut off is a must) except the Sunbeam used to beep if it was ignored for a while and that was useful. Not a big issue overall for us. The controls all fall easily to hand and generally do not cause or have problems, except for the heat dial. The “maximum” setting is on the left side of the dial, while the Sunbeam was on the right. Our right-handed grip means our index finger often bumps the control knob pushing the temp dial up. I like to iron at the 97% setting but my finger kept bumping it up to 100%. Did I really notice? No. If it really bugged me or I was always bumping up from a lower say, 80% setting, then I’d tape it. It’s only a problem above 75% or your finger won’t hit it, so I’ll mention it but it isn’t even close to a serious issue for us.4 comments

Unreliable thermostat
I purchased this iron after returning a Sunbeam Verve iron three times. I've now had this iron for five months and it sometimes heats up to high setting when dial is set to medium or low. Has burned several items of clothing. Now the shot of steam and mist functions no longer work. I will return under warrantee tomorrow but not sure where to go from here. I know they don't make appliances to last but 3-5 months is laughable...almost!
No positives if a product lasts 5 months
Dodgy thermostat, broken mist and steam settings

Okay
I picked this model over the bulky steam-reserve irons and it's heavy next-gen brother, but I have to say I'm a little bit disappointed. Compared to our 10-year-old previous iron, there's not that much more bang for your buck. For the steam to have any real added benefit, it needs to be on 4/5, which depletes the reservoir quite quickly (3 shirts/refill). The creases also don't fall out as well as I would expect for the price point and recommendations.
Price, weight, power steam
No off button, wrinkle-removing ability

Had to take up weight lifting to use this iron
Thought I was purchasing a great iron, but after trying to iron with it for more than 15 minutes, my arm starts to ache. The grooved sides of the iron which are supposed to help you get small spaces, keeps catching on the garment and creases it again. Always seem to be having to refill it. Dislike it immensly
NIce looking iron
Too heavy, having to refill more than normal, and catches on the clothes you are trying to iron.

An iron that works!
Great iron, bought it before I read the other neg feedback below. It is nice and solid, has a really long cord and absolutely pumps out the steam. So much that you often need to refill it, however I don't mind as the payoff is that it works really well.
I absolutely HATE light irons, they are next to useless to actually iron, and this one if not light, so if you are really small or have weak arms you might want to think twice, but for me I love it. I was sick to death of buying irons that didnt work or you had to press really hard to iron pr...Read more
operly. Highly recommend this one. Works well, heaps of steam, long cord, nice and heavy, and irons very very well. Have not had any issues with non stick base (been about 3 months). Also has a nice deep lip which allows you to iron perfectly around buttons. Irons really well, heaps of steam, long cord. Gurgles and steams on idle, and you need to refill water tank regularly, but who cares, it works!3 comments
Just a quick follow up. This iron is still going strong. Some build up on muck on the iron plate which was removed by ironing some rock salt.
Everything else is perfect, still highly recommend

Thanks for your valuable feedback Berto!
Thought I would come back after two years and report that it is still going strong. The iron plate needs an odd clean (once a year by ironing rock salt) otherwise my review is still as above

Rubbish, intermittently heats up if it wants to? Would waste your money
We purchased this iron on sale at Target for about $90, it lasted 7 months before decided it will heat up only when it decides to if at all, and on occasions the handle heats up not the hot plate. It also spits water on clothes.
In a rush to dash out a buy a replacement I went looking at the a Brevile factory seconds shop, and noticed they were selling refurbished ones of this model for $79, I didn't buy one as I am not being caught out twice. But these irons are obviously defective seeing as how they have refurbished a pallet load of returned ones.
Do not waste your money
It looks good.

Not happy
For approximately 8 years, I have always purchased Phillips irons as they seem to have the best heat settings and I have been more than happy. I knew my favourite old one was on its way out so when this model came out on special and being a more expensive model, I purchased it for the future. I began using this one about 3 months or so ago and have to say I have been really disappointed to say the least. Right from the beginning, It dripped water over the clothes so had to have the steam setting set on a minimum but persisted with using it b...Read more

Would be perfect if it didn't drip.
Bought this iron based on all these great reviews because my old Sunbeam kept cutting out the power in the house. Yes the iron glides beautifully and makes lots of steam but it drips water on your clothes all the time while ironing and leaks water too. The lid for the water compartment doesn't close properly either. Returned it straight away and bought the Tefal Express Easy Control which was on sale for $299 at Myer and haven't looked back.
steam, easy glide
drips and leaks water, noisy, poor quality water lid

Makes ironing an ease
Bought this iron based on reviews here and wasn't disappointed. Glides effortlessly across shirts which for me is the litmus test and is reasonably priced. Steam power is great as it gets into the shirt removing creases easily. It is quite loud at times and on occasion makes a crackling sound but this doesn't bother me.

So far, so good!
This iron replaces old Sunbeam and Philips irons that over the years became more and more prone to cutting off the house power whenever they made steam or after refilling. Despite some bad reviews, but because of some 'excellent' ones, I bought a GC4875. The bad reviews seemed to be mainly poor quality control, with irons being almost useless out of the box. I figured I could quickly determine if I didn't have a good one within a few ironing tasks, and swap it if it wasn't.
It seems I have a good one. Despite being suspicious of the 'silly s...Read more
cience' that marketing departments feed us, 'Ionic Stream' did seem to be plausible physics, so I went for this model as a lot of heavy linen finds its way into the laundry basket. Previously we've used a squirter bottle of water to pre-soak the linen before ironing, however the GC4875 managed a basket full of linen without even using its built-in water squirter. Granted, the steam and heat were turned up full and the 'Ionic' button was on the whole time, but it worked surprisingly well. And even better, it didn't cause any black-outs to the house power! The iron is a little heavier than our previous steam irons, but I suspect this is because the base is more substantial. It takes slightly longer to heat up and a lot longer to cool down - turn it off and keep ironing for a couple of minutes with full steam! The sole plate doesn't seem to slide quite as easily as a previous Philips iron, but the heavier base might explain this sensation. The good ironing performance comes at a cost in water usage. On full heat and steam, it gulps a tank of water in about 20 minutes, but there is an abundance of steam - like an old locomotive rolling to a station. I suspect the water reservoir is shallower than it could be to make room for a thicker heating element and sole plate, so maybe a necessary compromise for a self-contained steam iron; the alternative being a two-part steam generator ironing system at probably double the price and finding room to store it. The controls are all where you'd expect. The power-on indicator light is at the base of the handle - a bit hard to see. The flip-open filler cap is at the top, has a slight funnel shaped opening and doesn't leak like our previous Philips iron. Annoyingly the cord is about 20cm shorter than all our old iron's which were just long enough for a certain convenient ironing board arrangement - now a short extension lead is needed.1 comment
The top edge of the rubber 'skin', on the part of the handle where the inside of my thumb grips, has peeled and worn away rather sooner than expected for its hours of use. More an aesthetic issue than a serious problem.

Disappointed
Had a Philps iron previously and it always worked really well. When that one would no longer steam during ironing I replaced it with this model and unfortunately from the very first day it leaked from the handle. I've now taken that one back and replaced it with the same model so hopefully better luck this time!
Easy to use and light
Leaked from the handle and the cord is shorter than the previous model I had!

Excellent iron
I bought mine (GC4855) at BingLee's online for $89 (with free postage&handling) and haven't a complain as of yet. It's absolutely marvellous taking creases out and isn't heavy. The cord is a decent length and the steam! Wow! Lots of steam to make my ironing chores much faster and easier. As a few people have already said though, it is quite loud when upright, although this is hardly a concern for me personally, as this iron does exactly what it's supposed to and isn't very expensive (like those iron station things). I'm glad to have done my research and ended up buying this instead of those ridiculously priced ironing stations.

A quality iron that works as it ought to
This iron worked well straight out of the box - I plugged it in, filled with water and rinsed out, filled again and started to iron. My husband's white shirts have always been an issue, and my previous iron was never hot enough to get out the wrinkles - even on the hottest setting like linen. I always had to use a spray bottle.
With the Philips, it took so little time! It's hot enough that you need to use the settings as they should be - in this case, cotton for the white shirts. I didn't use the spray bottle once. Great steam bursts and co...Read more
ntinuous steam - no wrinkles, even the tram tracks came out ( my husband is no ironer!) It's a little noisy in between ironing when you stand it up, but this doesn't worry me overmuch. Good size reservoir, easy button design - the steam intensity settings in particularly are very easy to slide up and down whilst holding the iron. The temperature setting is a little odd because it seems back to front compared with other irons, but it's a minor matter. The soleplate feels solid. Overall a very good product, especially as I got a cash discount on it. Steam is exceptional, both continuous and burst. Iron is HOT so settings work as they should - linen setting should only be used on linen for example. A bit noisy when resting.1 comment

Just bought this to replace my old philips iron which is 6.5 years old and it was time for a new one as it's getting on in years. My family and friends only buy Philips Irons as they are the only ones that last and are Quality.
