Heaters Buying Guide
Our buying guide will explain which type of heater would suit you most, how much you can expect to pay for one, and which features are worth looking out for.

Tad disappointing
Lovely fire however I have to agree with the others and I'm kicking myself I never read reviews First, my fault I know but the salesman sold me. Anyway the fan, when it finally turns on, is ridiculously loud even on low! and the safety feature that prevents the vent from closing so you can do slow burn means it chews through a ton of wood and never burns all night but I'm told all new fireplaces are the same (vent wise) these days as it's all about safety
Purchased in October 2021 at Barbeques Galore for $2,900.00.

One year on & still bitterly disappointed with our purchase
I wrote my initial review in August 2018. My thoughts have not changed. The heater is a lemon & a very loud one at that. If you have the fan on anything but low & try to listen to the tv you need to crank the volume right up.
Also as others have mentioned it is physically impossible to get the fire to burn overnight.
It’s also impossible to talk to Saxon directly & the company who sold it to us wiped there hands of the problem from day 1.
All I can hope now is that my reviews will stop others being ripped off like we have been.
If someone try’s to tell you to buy a Saxon heater, run run run away!
Purchased in July 2021.

Thanks for all the previous reviews
At first i was pretty dissapointed especially with the 20 minute fan delay. After making the adjustment to overide the fan delay, so i can have fan on and off constantly at my discretion, things changed. The rooms heat up much quicker and the magnets, which i settled to cover 4 of the 12mm holes in the slide vent, enables a slower burn. I will monitor the magnets and make adjustments over the next several burns. Thanks to all the feedback and ideas in previous posts.
I am now looking at a heat tranfer fan to warm the far end of the house with all this lovely warm heat.

Excessive burn on low setting. Fan system sucks!
Wood burn on low is ridiculous, need to replenish, at night, every 2-3 hours. 20 minute delay on fan operation, might as well purchased a non fan heater. No fan on low setting whats the point, don't come at this pollution thing!!
Cost of wood on the heating side makes electricity the cheaper alternative.
On the positive, heating is not a problem, heats the whole house, on this okay.

Disappointed.
Replaced 25 year old Tasmanian made Blackwood with new Chinese made model this year. Very disappointed. Burns too hard and fast and the fan delay is just annoying. After over 50 years of lighting fires the explanation in the instructions are simply insulting. Design "improvements" are much like many computer programme "upgrades"....introducing faults not before experienced. Will not recommend and will not listen to BBQ Galore any more....then again, what would they say....they own Saxon.

Saxon woodheaters
We purchased a Saxon walnut fireplace and were so disappointed we demanded our money back.
We were told by the Saxon agent that it would burn over night
Upon filling the wood box with dry hardwood timber at 9 pm we found we could not get it to last through the night and found it cold in the morning at 6 am.
The agent went on to try to explain we didn't fill it with the right wood and blamed us for the outcome. We have lived in Kingaroy and Canberra with wood fires and know how to operate them and how they perform.
We were refunded our money...Read more

Sick of Saxon
Have to sit on top of this heater to feel warm. The 20 minute delay on the fan every time we add wood is ridiculous and ah falls out everywhere whenever we open the door
The water in the small kettle on top of the heater never gets hot. Very disappointed

Problem with airflow & fan
On our Saxon Blackwood inbuilt heater we had our fan bypassed from auto to a manual with an electrician using diagram supplied by BBQ Galore FABULOUS last night. The heater warms well but went through so much wood when we had the auto fan. Made a huge difference to our wood with the manual fan.
Today the airflow handle has jammed in the open position and won't budge. I guess we will again gobble the wood depending when we get help for the jammed handle still under warranty .

Ongoing warranty issue - Update
We have had a Saxon Blackwood heater for just over 12 months now and are up to our fourth warranty call - three for the same problem. The air slide gets stuck in the open position so that we can't regulate how hot it burns . If it weren't so uncomfortable it would be comical to see a room with fire blazing and all windows and doors open. While Barbecues Galore have been very good in responding to our problem they still haven't been able to fix it.
Update -
We are now starting our 3rd winter with the Saxon Blackwood and now have hopefully fixed our sticking airslide problem. Rob from Barbecues Galore replaced the airslide - apparently it was warped so that when it heated up it got stuck. We'll see.
Purchased in March 2021 at Barbeques Galore for $2,795.00.

STUPID FAN FUNCTION
Surely there is a way to by pass the automatic fan and the 20 minute delay, this is a ridiculous function!!
Not to mention the amount of wood we are going to as the fan will operate unless the air flow is more then half way open.. NOT HAPPY AT ALL!!

Saxon Blackwood wood heater
We purchased this heater in 2015 and have had problems with this wood heater ever since. The installer has been back several times and has extended the flue and replaced the fan. The air vent has to opened all the time and every time you close the air vent the heater wants to go out. Have to stand far to close to the heater to keep warm. Now waiting for the installer to return in winter to hopefully rectify this problem or get the heater replaced. Will not Boil the billy. Bought an infrared temperature monitor to see how hot this heater gets. BBQ's galore have a novel on this heater.

Does the job in heating a large split level house
works very well apart from the very noisy vibration caused by the operation of the fan when operating on the highest setting. Heat output is great . Soft wood burns well despite the warning to use hardwood only. Looks good and is a pleasure to have operating in the cold weather.

Not happy
We have just purchased a Saxon Blackwood to replace a thirty year old Turbo 10. Firstly we were told by the salesman at Barbecues Galore that they were made it Tasmania which satisfied our wanting Australian made. To our horror the box was delivered with made in China boldly printed on it. Now installed the heating capacity is good but having the door handle heating up so that it is not touchable is ridiculous. Also the knob for lowering the heat also heats up and cannot be moved without gloves. The coating on the handle is melting away due to t...Read more
he heat. Having the fan cut off when the door is opened and not come on again for twenty minutes is a puzzling function. Had we been told about these problems before purchasing we would not have purchased Saxon as there is a good choice of similar capacity available and some are definitely made in Australia. We only changed heaters to modernise the look but are very disappointed due to the difficulties in using the Saxon Blackwood.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

This definitely heats up the house quick
We have just installed our new Saxon Blackwood heater, it has heated up our house so quickly, the only thing that concerns us is how hot the door handle and high/low handle gets, yes there was a warning but my personal opinion, it's abit of a safety issue. Other then that we are very happy

Good in large areas
Got one of these for my local football club, it works well, requiring limited maintenance but putting out a good heat to a large open area. Would recommend, as there is nothing better than sitting by the fire in the cold winter months. Give it a go if you're reading!

Best investment I have made
We have been wanting to install a wood heater for years and finally done it this winter
This wood heater is awesome we can comfortably keep our house warm on those cold nights and cold days
I like the the idea of the e speed fan, to start with I was not told there was a 20 minute delay on ur fan when you open. The door or the fan turns off when you restrict the air. I was disappointed with this feature to start with but to be honest it makes no difference really. When you have e a heap kg wood in there and the house is warm you don't mind t...Read more

Stylish Design
The first thing that caught my eyes when shopping for a heater is the unique design of Saxon blackwood. Apart from making my home warm, it brightens my living room. From far it is like a fireplace in the olden days. The most important factor is my electricity bill is okay.

Hi we have just purchased. Saxon Blackwood heater and are deeply disappointed with the fan function. Supposed To only take 20 mins to cut in .well the fire has been going for well over an hour and is burning Quite well but till the fan hasn’t cut in really annoyed any suggestions

The fan turning on & off is controlled by the position of the air-vent as well as the heat of the heat box along with the door. Every time you open the door the fan turns off and restarts the timer. As does the position of the air-vent. I disconnected the fan timer and the heater works better, but is still very ordinary.
Its one of the worst ever purchases I have made.
It’s not even come on at all. How do u disconnect the timer? It’s putting out some heat even with out the fan but I still want to be able to use it

We had a new opening handle supplied to us as the original got too hot to open by hand We have had the use for a full winter now and happy with the manual fan and new handle no more problems.
the maximum size of area they say. You need to close the windows with blinds, curtains etc and you need to use a fair amount of wood. When you heat big areas it all costs money anyway what ever style of heating. To heat... Read more
