My ultimate car!
Living in Sydney and being someone who loves to get out in the wilderness and explore I needed a car that was going to cater for both! I've found that car in my Forester XT. Such a spacious, well designed and reliable car. Small enough to navigate through narrow Sydney streets but gutsy enough to go a little off road and get me to where I need to go!

What a great car so solid, just watch out the doors open really wide and can bang into other parked
Driving experience - this car is far Superior then our old Ford Escape, it drives smoothly and is higher off the floor so you can see further ahead, which gives you better ability to predict the traffic.
Just watch out when you open the doors they open very wide and you can easily hit other car that are parked nearby, especially dangerous when you have kids who are determined to open their own doors but not strong enough to stop the force of the door. I like the feature that tells us how many km's we have left before the fuel will run out.
The reliability has been fine we have only had the car for a couple of weeks it is way more economical then the old Ford Escape.

Great features, drives superbly
Pros:
• Excellent steering, acceleration, braking and suspension.
• Looks brilliant!
• Roomy interior.
• Quality construction as you would expect from Subaru.
• Wonderful safety features inc. eyesight camera which alerts you about things like lane departure and collisions ahead.
• One of the best 4wd’s in its class, IMHO.
Cons:
• Cannot program automatic central locking after driving at a certain speed (eg, 10km/h).

• Centre screen and console/ Sat Nav is not very pretty as far as interiors go and the font looks outdated. TIPS: XT Premium gives you a better stereo/sound system and electric seats for the driver and front passenger.

Love it!! Super comfy for passengers as well
We have did tons of research to look for a car that can fit a driver that’s 6ft tall and still being comfortable in the limited space, as well as a big boot that can fit white goods. Very smooth performance and sometimes we even complain about the pedal being too sensitive. Plenty of legroom for back passengers, One tip on buying is to choose the non-leather seats, so much comfier and absorbs less heat in the sun.
Only complain is the vent for AC sometimes is not powerful enough for back passengers under Australian’s hot weather. Oh, and the car survived in a severe hailstorm with only two dints! Very impressive.

Sixth Forester I have owned, the first brand new one.
Update - Exhaust pipe cracking I quite often will power the car at low revs which seems to resonate pipe to break. Subaru after 3 yrs have redesigned exhaust with an anti resonator on it. It works.
Performance - I find power adequate, drives really well around corners, feels like a normal car. Often first away at traffic lights, no trouble keeping up with more powerful cars.
Economy - Starts poor (7.0 l/100k) gets better as everything freed up (5.9 l/100 K), did that for a while, then went back up again to around the 6.8 mark. I was careful...Read more

Good car for general use
The car is small outside but spacious inside. We can fit three child seats in the second row (if the child seat has got arm rest, it needs to be lifted up). It is easy to drive around and parking in the shopping centre is not difficult. Overall it's a reliable small SUV.

Great Car to drive - just needs more technology on the inside
Bought the car new at the end of 2017 for the growing family - 1 infant and toddler. Perfect size for the 4 of us.
Driving Experience - It's a pleasure to drive, nice and smooth, quite cabin and the viewing is fantastic, which is why we bought it over the Mazda CX5. Interior is great, but it does lack the refinements of others in the same class. My only problem is with the head unit and speakers. Speakers are of poor quality and I love listening to music in the car. Also the lack of apple and android car play is disappointing on a 2017 model car that you pay over 30K for. All in all very happy with the purchase

Constant DPF issues with Diesel model
We bought a new 2013 Diesel Forester as we do a lot of freeway driving and we thought the diesel would be economical. Any benefit that came with the Diesel engine has been offset by the constant returns to the dealer due to DPF blocking despite us doing the driving style needed to prevent the DPF from blocking. Of course the dealer charges a nice sum to do a forced regen to clear the DPF each time it clogs. The car has also always shuddered under load and significantly loses power going up an incline. This was our second new Subaru and it will ...Read more
be our last. I would definitely suggest that anyone thinking about buying one of these vehicles to think again. Subaru will tell you as long as you do freeway runs every week or so that the DPF will clear itself out and you'll avoid taking it to the dealer for a forced regen. This has not been the case with our vehicle. We have also been told by a Subaru specialist that eventually the DPF will go and will cost about $10K to fix. Not something to look forward to when you've paid close to $40k for the new car. If you google Subaru Forester DPF you'll be able to read plenty of similar stories.Similar opinion? Loved our first one, but not the same with the second.
We loved our first Forester purchase in 2010 - reliable, spacious, an all round legendary car! So much so we purchased a second Forester in 2014 however, this one has not been so great. A recent 'oil leak' was detected by our own mechanic (after we became sick and tired of dealing with the dealership service program) - took it straight back to the dealer (thankfully our mechanic knew someone who worked there) and had this checked out.
We were just a few months outside our manufacturer's warranty but were prepared to go in with full force gi...Read more
ven this type of defect is certainly not expected in a car of this age (and only 50 000 km). Even the service guy we dealt with admitted he had never seen this problem before. Thankfully Subaru agreed to fix the engine and the dealership gave us a loan car. This experiences has now tainted our love for Foresters and has completely cemented our skepticism over the quality of the services that are provided by Subaru. Our mechanic also remarked that the air filter had never been replaced after servicing with Subaru for over 2 years. We also became extremely annoyed with the constant pestering to have our Subaru serviced by the service centre. After once explaining that we had a one week old baby at home and the car's service was on the 'to do' list, I was met with frequent calls trying to lock in a service. Once a call with such desperation that they were willing to drive myself and the children home to then take the vehicle back for a service. This was very kind but it came across like they were SO desperate we didn't take our business elsewhere. Only our mechanic now and I think this will be our last Subaru. :-(Similar opinion? Love the Forester
Fantastic city and country car - we regularly take it camping. Havent tried it properly off road but is very comfortable on unsealed roads. Love the pilot seat, easy handling and steering. Lots of legroom in the back, even for tall family members. Very solid build and feel compared to some of the new SUVs available.

Completely let down
We loved our 2000 Forrester so much that we didnt even consider another brand (or dealership) when it was time for a new car. This was the only car we've ever bought brand new. And we got a lemon. We were told the incredibly high oil consumption was "in spec" but I've never had to replace oil between 6 monthly services before. In desperation, after 4 years of poor performance, my father took the car to his mechanic of 30 years to get a second opinion. He identified a crack in the engine timer. The dealership indicated our extended warranty was ...Read more
now void because we had gone to another mechanic! After a battle they agreed to replace the engine timer as a show of good will, but we had to pay $2K to get the a/c working again. Now the car has consumed over 15L of oil in the 6 months since the engine timer was replaced and the a/c still isn't working properly. The size and comfort of the Forrester, plus the off road performance, remain perfect for our family. Did we just get the lemon or were these problems typical of this model? Not sure, but either way we'll never own a Subaru again!Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

So far so good
Bought the top of the range petrol model. Very smooth, very quiet. There are copious whistles and bells which are tricky to learn, but the Delivery staff spent hours explaining stuff and were helpful when we called back.
Seems all very good but early days yet. I will be back with updates over the years I hope

Going good but maybe a few unnecessary bells and whistles I have not yet gained full competence to use most effectively. Driven my son's Audi seven seater recently and I prefer the Subie by miles.

Why drive anyting else - Superior engineering/safety/handling/drive/overall package viewpoint
Upgraded from the Subaru XV to the Forester, from an engineering/safety/handling/drive/overall package viewpoint, the boxer engine is smooth coupled with the AWD system, why drive anything else.
(Having driven most vehicle brands).
- Superior AWD system.
- Very underrated vehicle in comparison to other common brands.
- A great SUV.
- Drive one to understand the engineering behind these vehicle.
Definitely recommend one over other common brands.

Awesome Car
This is a great car that has slowly existed the wagon market and entered the SUV market. It's gotten larger but just as reliable as before. It's a great family car and has plenty of storage space for when you need to move stuff. It's very versatile and is good value for money

Nice vehicle to drive.
This is my second Forester (both purchased new). Its nice and easy to drive and I love the "seeing eye" cruise control on the highway, it made it so easy to follow a vehicle whos speed I was comfortable with. The CVT transmission system is a bit slow when first taking off but it performs way better than my old automatic did on steep hills. It has lots of bells and whistles (some I have never used) and so far I am very happy with the driving experience.

Great family car and sports car
2002 gt forester Ive had a fair few carsxand by far this is the most versatile and fun. Handeling is great although feels a little light if used to a commodore. Parts and upgrades redily available and price for a decent condition model is very reasonable. Comfortable for a family on a long trip with enough power to get you out of trouble

A car for all seasons.
Slightly miffed that they didn't have an auto on hand, but this car pulls like a tractor. Awesome torque, very good fuel economy, and traction control in mud and snow. A bit disappointed with the false floor over the spare wheel; nothing but gravity keeps it closed. Over bumps and humps my extra equipment tends to jump about. I gave up dealer servicing due to apparent extreme costs of filters. Would certainly purchase another one.

Reliable, comfortable and efficient
We've had our MY2015 Subaru Forester Limited Edition 2.5i for 2 years now. Economy averages around 7l/100km although we did get an average of 6.4l/100km on a long trip between Melbourne and Adelaide. No problems travelling that distance on 1 tank of fuel. The heated leather seats are comfortable and great in winter. The car has always been reliable - only regular scheduled services. I would definitely purchase another Subaru.

Rock solid, Reliable and awesome to ride
To begin with, the high ride seating position is brilliant. If you are looking for an SUV with excellent ground clearance and one of the best all round visibility from the driver's seat, then look no further. Provides the best high ride seating position. Especially i personally enjoy seeing the bonnet and lots of forward visibility from driver seat.

to zip through. But it doesn't personally bother me because for normal city and day to day driving I never felt it was lacking power. In terms of features, (again I'm specifically talking about 2.5iS 2016 model), it does have plenty such as reverse camera, front row heated seats, moon roof, x-mode,sat nav, keyless entry etc and most importantly eye-sight. I love the eyesight adaptive driving and it's pretty good and reliable when it comes to detecting obstacles ahead and adjusting speeds automatically. However though sometimes you do feel it's a bit overly sensitive but again personally that's not a big issue for me. In terms of features again, I would hope subaru introduces a) Android auto and Apple playSimilar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!
Questions & Answers
Jon M.asked
Started the vehicle this morning and let it idle for 90 seconds with my foot on the clutch...dog escaped so I took foot of clutch and got out to retrieve dog (all up...about 30seconds).
Heard a gear grating noise behind me and watched the car jump forward, then stall. Bugger said I.
Put dog away and went back out to the car.
Got in - tried the gear stick and it balked at all gears. Started the car with foot on the clutch and engine started, no problem. No engagement of gearbox.
Went to engage gears - which I couldn't, so I took my foot of the clutch which promptly stalled the engine.
Gearbox stuck in 5th gear.
Any body had a similar experience? Time for a new gearbox?

Hi,
I own a 2014 Subaru forester, 2.5i petrol engine and I'm wondering if I need to change the intank fuel filter or not? The car is at its 125,000 km and the fuel consumption is around 9.5 to 10.5 L/100km. I'm wondering if I change the fuel filter, I might get better mileage on gas or not? Your answer to my question is highly appreciated.
Cheers,
Jeff

Hi Jeff, Sorry I cannot help with this but a quick call to a Subaru Service centre will help with that
Hi all. My understanding is that poor fuel economy is not a symptom of a dirty fuel filter. It's more so bad idling, poor performance. That said, you can never be sure - until you replace it ! Our Forester gets the same economy numbers as yours, Jeff. Has since new, and never seems to vary. As Jeanette suggests, ask your trusted mechanic or Subaru.
Thanks Ted and Jeanette for your responses. As fot the fuel filter, many mechanics say that you don't need to change it unless there is something wrong with it. Since the intank fuel filter for FB engines comes with the fuel pump, I have to buy the whole kit together which will cost me around $250 and $200 for labour. I'm not sure if it worth it or not but it's in the logbook to change at 125000 Kms. Anyhow, I'm more relaxed now to hear that your car's consumption is the same. Maybe I just leave it like this for a while and see what happens :)
By the way, does anyone here has issue with the oil leak from the camshaft right on top of the exhaust manifold? I'm having this issue recently and the smell is just horrible. Any ideas that the oil leak stop products could help or not? (I think it's really time for me to change my car :D)
Ronasked
Before getting to my queries, I love my MY19 Forester Premium, bought May last year, under 6500kms as I have not done any long trips and the country is now in lock down. Fuel consumption from day one worked down from 9.6l/km to 8.5l/km as the motor "ran in".
Queries
Is it possible for a front seat passenger to lock the car? (My 2013 dual cab has this security feature)
As I drive out of my home street there is a very slight ridge in the road and as I go over it there is a very minor thump. Will have the dealer check it at one year service but just ask if this would be normal with this type of suspension?
I had the impression that there was a "maximum speed" button but I have not been able to find it. It would be a pretty good feature for roadworks speed restricted areas.
The Infotainment/navigation system seems to have an obscure and sealed operating system. Can an owner put any more programs on the system? If it was Windows or Android then I could use Oziexplorer on it.
Thanks for your advice on these matters.

Hi @ Ron, Thank you so much for your review and congratulations on your new Forester - a great choice!
Passengers can only lock/unlock their own door using the lock/unlock lever. With the minor thump, it is best to have your Subaru service retailer check that out for you as its difficult to say if there’s an issue without firsthand knowledge. The MY19 Forester does have a Manual Speed Limiter function which is a part of the eyesight technology so please check the Eyesight Manual and/or your dealer can also help you with it. As for the infotainment unit, it’s not possible to add any software aside from what is provided by the factory through any updates. We hope you and your loved ones are safe and well. The Subaru Team.
Many thanks
