Cafe Series Espresso EM7000 (Stainless)

Hi,
I bought this just over a week ago, upgraded from the minni barista.

I don’t think the pressure is working in the machine. The pressure gauge does not move when pulling shots (I have played around with grind size and amount of coffee in a double shot). We are getting no creamer either.

Could this be faulty?

The pressure pump in my unit broke at the neck and had to be replaced. As your unit is only a week old it should be covered by warranty. The machine makes great cappuccinos.

Start with freshly ground beans. If your beans are old, no amount of fine grinding will save them. The grind size should be fine for espresso coffee. The degree is fineness required fluctuates during the day, so play around with this. Pack the ground beans tightly into the basket. If the grind is not fine enough the water will go straight through without registering on the dial. Does the machine pump water for a black coffee (tap on rhs of the machine)? If not there is a problem.

Hello Peter,
The manual suggests for it to be changed every 6 months but that would depend on your use and everyday cleaning.

Had my EM7100 almost since 2016 and it has been great. In last couple of months though it has started putting water into waste rather than through the grinds. I haven't changed anything and have descaled and cleaned but no pressure at head. Any ideas?

Hi Kheng, Sorry to hear of your issues with your EM7000. It does sound like an issue with the PCB however it is hard to diagnose on this platform. My recommendation would be to visit one of our service agents for an assessment. All agents can be located on the Sunbeam website https://www.sunbeam.com.au/en/Service-Support/Service-Support/

Sounds like a problem I had with my EM6900 before I purchased my EM7000. It required a new main computer board & cost was around the $180 mark from memory (was 3 or 4 years ago)

Had my em7000 for 15 months and really only use the double shot basket. Last few weeks have noticed I have had to tamper harder and harder to keep pressure up until now where even with loads of force on tamper, little to no pressure. Swapped to a single basket to eliminate machine issue, pulls fine. Is it likely just the double basket needs replacing (warped?)
It certainly gets a workout.

I use both single & double baskets (I use VST brand baskets 15gm for single & 22grm for double because I use a larger mug ) but there is a difference in the grind required between the two different baskets, using a Breville 820 grinder I have to grind 3 clicks finer for the double basket (this was also true for the standard Sunbeam baskets). I also find that the temperature difference between Summer & Winter makes a difference to the grind required for example single basket in Winter I grind at 13 to 14 on the grinder scale but in the Summer (same brand of coffee beams) I have to adjust my grind down to 8 to 9 on the scale, The same goes for a double basket 10 to 12 Winter & 6 to 7 Summer. Also had to make the same sort of adjustments when I used a Sunbeam grinder. I have also found that pre ground coffee beans are not ground fine enough to get sufficient pressure for a good extraction in any machine I have owned over the years. Also note that when varying the grind you have to adjust the quantity to keep the level of the coffee in the basket just touching the base plate, hope this helps.

Dan N
Dan N

Need to add that for the past 15 months I buy the same bean everytime, a new 1kg bag every 3 weeks and have never really had to adjust the grind that much. I have tried changing grind settings (Breville Smart Grind) but still no pressure. Anyone upgraded or changed their basket to an after market?

Firepower
Firepower

You mentioned "Anyone upgraded or changed their basket to an after market?"

For me the standard filter baskets are useless. I used to buy green beans and roast them myself to get good crema with the standard basket then they would only last three weeks. With my Dual Floor basket you can buy the good brand coffee beans from the supermarket, keep them for a long time and you still get great full tan crema. You have to grind the beans yourself with a burr grinder.

https://www.ebay.com.au/p/Sunbeam-EM4300-EM6910-EM7000-PU8000-Dual-Floor-2-Cup-Filter-EM6910102/1424907965?iid=183646048898

You can leave the grind setting almost anywhere and you still get great full tan crema. The pressure gauge hardly moves but you still get a great tasting crema. The experts say it is cheating and do not use these baskets but who cares as long as you get great crema all the time.

You'll never go back to the standard basket after using a dual floor basket.

Hi,

Firstly does your machine still froth the milk? if it does then your second pump is working OK. Have you done the cleaning cycles ( there are two of them) listed in the user manual? If yes then it may be a Warranty issue as the pumps have five years warranty on them from memory (well the EM6900 did).

Sunbeam
Customer C.Sunbeam

Hi Paul. Have you tried a pressure test to determine if it a pump issue or just a grind issue? If you place your cleaning disk in the 2 cup filter basket (flat side down), place the group handle into the group head and press the 2 cup button. If the pump is working to the expected standard, then the needle should be hovering between orange and red for the duration of the 2 cup cycle. If the needle does not rise, there may be an issue with the pump.

When turning on the machine after a minute when it sets itself up, the steam wand spits out water lightly. Looks like pressure has built up and is causing water to be released. However sometimes it drips out small amounts of water rather than spitting. This still occurred even after I descaled. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Hi Bonnie,
It could be just a residual amount of water left in the wand.

My EM7000 won’t expel coffee from the single or double cup. It works fine with the Nespresso shots and the milk and water wand is fine. Help!

1 answer
Sunbeam
Customer C.Sunbeam

Hi Dim. When you say the machine works with the Nespresso shots, are you referring to the EM7100?? That is the machine that is compatible with the capsules or pods. If there is no coffee extracting when using the one and two cup filter baskets, your grind is most likely too fine, thus not allowing the water to push through. If you are grinding your own beans, try a coarser grind. If you have preground coffee, you will need to buy a coarser grind.

Hi, my EM 7000 is a few years old. We hardly ever use the steam wand, but it has now stopped working. I can hear the pump, but the pressure gauge doesn't move and nothing comes out. Maybe try another descale and then leave the steam wand running for a while to see if this may force it through.

Customer C.Sunbeam

Hi Lukeyd. Can you advise how long this happens for each time. Ordinarily I would just say that this is the thermoblock reaching temperature and this can take anywhere between 1 and 2 minutes especially if the machine hasn't been used in a few hours.

Hi Ravi, this sounds like it could be the thermoblock which heats up the water. Might be an idea to pop it into one of our Service Agents to take a look for you as it isn't something that can be replaced at home. If you visit our website www.sunbeam.com.au and go to the Service and Support link you will find a listing of our agents, or if you email your suburb and state we can point you in the right direction.

We love the machine, however, when we do a second shot the pressure is way into the red and it gets terribly burnt. First shot perfect, second shot always burnt. Exact same settings on our grinder. Can you advise why this would be the case? Thanks.

JayM
JayM

I believe this is caused by water and soggy coffee leftover in the bottom of the portafilter basket from the previous coffee. This would cause the next grind of coffee to clump on the bottom straight away and might result in the pressure gauge to go into the red. I think this has happened to me.

I would recommend washing the portafilter and thoroughly drying it prior to grinding the next lot of coffee.

It could also be caused by wet coffee grounds on the group head. I have a cloth to wipe any excess coffee grounds from it after each pour. You'll probably find that the coffee 'puck' after a pour will get stuck on the group head this way.

Tari M
Tari M

Thanks Jay. We do wash the portafilter and group head after each shot as well as we would when finishing with the machine. We use the manual button for our shots, so not sure if that has anything to do with it. If i just make one coffee.. then clean up and turn it off, then make another a few hours later, it comes out fine.

Sunbeam
Customer C.Sunbeam

Hi Tari M and thanks for the question. Ordinarily I would give you the same advice as Jay has given you but you are obviously following those steps already. I haven't come across this issue before so it's hard to diagnose. Is it possible for you to call our customer care team on 1300 881 861 so we can get more information from you? Alternatively, send us a private message with your contact details and we can organise for one of our coffee experts to give you a call.
