Hi my children and I bought my husband a mini barista coffee maker a few weeks ago for father’s day. No issues other than when we use the steam function to warm the milk it makes a dreadful screeching noise which is so loud it hurts your eardrums !!! Surely this cannot be right? Is it something we are doing wrong ? Please help. Sitting with a headache, drinking a lovely coffee!!!!!

Ah, it's all in your steaming technique. There's nothing wrong with the machine, but it will make that noise (as will other machines) if your steam wand is just a tad too far into the milk. Try lowering the jug just a little so that the steam wand is just kissing the surface of the milk. This does take some practice, and you will find YouTube videos demonstrating good milk expansion (ie. steaming) technique. Hope that helps!

Bought this EM4300 in May 2022 from HN and barely used 10 odd times.. Now, the machine is spouting hot water when I set the dial on 1 cup, 2 cup or even on "off" position. Am absolutely livid about this!!! Spoils my Sunday morning cuppa.

I'm assuming from your question that you prefer coffee to hot water :-)
Seriously though, you're well within the 12 month replacement warranty period, so just take it back to HN and have it swapped over for another unit!

Update:
So I returned the unit as directed under the warranty and advise from Sunbeam. The machine was GRUDGINGLY replaced in - store only after they tested it out back and told me there was nothing wrong with it and that it not being warm enough was probably a new temperature setting by Sunbeam.
So going home with my (apparently) ill gotten gains, I have now spent a further 3 weeks disappointed with lukewarm shots of coffee.
I can only assume they were correct in in-store and Sunbeam has changed the heat settings to be more consumer safe because someone fell asleep on the unit and scalded their cheek or some other such a nonsense. Regardless of why, this model now only produces lukewarm shots of coffee. I am very disappointed, especially having upgraded to ($$) 3 years warranty on this unit.
Feedback from sunbeam on this would be interesting.

Hi Karen B,
We can confirm all of the review was read. There have not been any changes made at all. If the unit is not heating as it should, and being a non repair product, the only option is to replace it. Or you can ask the store for a refund if purchased in the last 12 months. We can assure you all feed back/reviews are passed to our product managers. Kind Regards, Sunbeam

My auto shot does NOT work, it continues to fill up the cup! 28/8/2019
That is in single or double shot.
Purchased November 2018..... Should I just return it to my place of purchase (Good Guys)? Or have you any ideas on how I can resolve this issue?

You should first try factory resetting the unit. Instructions are in the manual. Also try descaling. If that doesn't fix it, definitely exchange it for a new one under the 12 month exchange warranty, at the Good Guys store where you bought it.

Marc E.asked

Hi Guys!

I have the same machine at home (recently purchased).

The first 5 or 6 cups I made I was able to get great consistency with the steamer. The milk had nice micro foam, was silky and had body and the level rose considerably in the milk jug at which point I could raise the jug to concentrate on getting perfect warmth.

Since then I feel I have done nothing differently and I cannot get any increase in volume of the milk! No froth, no bubbles, nothing at all. Comes out the exact same consistency as when I put it in.

To note a few things:

1. I have not changed the brand / type of milk I use. I have tried a fresh milk (same brand/type) just in case it was a expiry date thing with no improvement.
2. I have not changed my steaming technique and I follow the instructions to a T.
3. Cleaning wise, I have used the cleaning pin, and tried taking the end nozzle off to ensure no milk is stuck.
4. I have topped up the water, so no issue on that side.

I really cannot think of why it would go from perfect to nothing after the 5 or 6th use of the steamer. Perhaps the machine is broken already?

Edit: the steamer does still heat the milk in the same time as before.

Any ideas?

I had a somewhat similar experience (which I can't explain) but I subsequently used a different jug with results as good as the first time I frothed milk. The mini barista is my third Sunbeam espresso maker and as a result I now have a collection of these stainless steel jugs. Strangely the one that came with the mini barista was smaller than the previous two and was tapered toward the top. It was this shape that I found was the cause. Don't ask me why. Now when I use a larger straight sided jug I have no problem frothing milk.

Marc E.
Marc E.

Hi John B. Thank you for your input. That is very peculiar. Especially given the first few times I could get good consistency no problem.

One other thing I have noted, is lowering the tip further into the milk or raising it up to just on/above the surface is not changing the noise the steamer is making, so I am thinking the steaming mechanism may be faulty / air escaping somewhere along the way.

Hi Marc E.
Thank you for contacting Sunbeam. Sorry to hear of your issues with the EM4300. Apart from trying different jug positions, we suggest to run the descaling process. It may be a small blockage in the piping. Kind Regards, Sunbeam

Hi, I replaced my mini barista under warranty as it did the 'on while not on' thing. This is my third one as I really like the coffee from them. However,. My new machine simply doesn't heat up sufficiently. The top of the unit barely warms and my espresso shot is only warm. I have used it for a week thinking it might improve, but no. Thoughts please?

The simple answer is No. It doesn't happen on mine. I'm sure that hot water should only come from the spout when the switch is in that extreme right position marked hot water. I'd ring the Sunbeam customer support number and ask them what you can do about it

Hi My Sunbeam mini Barista Espresso Machine was purchased in May 2018 and yesterday afternoon stopped working properly. same problem as other people have found. That is - with the dial set at O position.... as soon as the power is turned on, the pump starts immediately and won't switch off. The machine ready light doesn't light. Tried turning the dial a few times but no change. The machine is always cleaned after use.
I rang customer service 1300 number and have been on hold now for 22 minutes. I am assured by the answering machine voice that the call is important to Sunbeam but that doesn't seem like customer service to me.

Not happy and would like some help as you indicate that you are keen to provide.

you have described exactly what happened to my old Sunbeam cafe espresso which is what caused me to buy the mini barista. I'd had the old one for about 5 or 6 years old and the problem was accompanied by a burning smell and even a whisp of smoke so I didn't bother. Just went out and bought a new one. Now I'm a bit worried that the same thing is going to occur.

I missed the call from Sunbeam, so I rang again and left my number. No luck yet to talk to anyone. Still hoping for a solution because I really like the product and the coffee that it makes. Just not happy with the longevity of the product. It seems from the comments here that at the moment, this model seems to develop this fault at about 18 month mark. Mine was only good for 13 months!

My Sunbeam Mini Espresso was working completely fine, until this morning. The dial has completely stopped functioning and I can no long make coffee. The frustrating thing is, I had to get my previous Sunbeam machine replaced, as it was over heating and burning me while I was making coffees. I’m so upset that this machine has given up so soon. One would think you could get more than 12mths out of a coffee machine. Has anyone been able to get it going again?

Hi all. Sorry to hark on about steaming milk but the frustrating thing for me is consistency. In earlier posts, I mentioned that I adjusted the tilt (less) on the jug and this increased the volume of milk and produced a seemingly good microfoam. It does seems to take longer for this to happen than it use to, but I'm confident I steam the milk correctly now -all the right sounds are being made. However, while it looks good, at the end a dollop of foam appears on the surface of the jug - it's not thick like this all the way down. I bang and swirl the jug as you should do. But, as before, though the milk appears good when I pour into my cup, I am not getting a microfoam layer all the way down the cup. I used to get this right and so would like to get it again. Is it the dollop of thick microfoam on the jug surface that is the problem? Should I stir the jug with a spoon to get rid of it? Once again, coffee tastes great- no complains there- but any help would be appreciated.

Twelve months ago had the machine replaced after 6 months under warranty because when I turn the dial to 2 cups the steam light turns on and does not produce any water for the coffee grind, or the machine seems to start purge mode. New machine has recently started this again intermittently and I was getting frustrated. Now the power button is stuck and the machine is unable to make coffee. Do I go for third time lucky with this model or just cut my losses??
Update- Sunbeam Customer Service was great, getting a replacement and going for third time lucky. If this one packs it in I’ll be done!

Thinking i may have to do the same, changing to milk throffer is intermittent, something to do with warming function or switch.. Coffee works okay most of the time. However post coffee, turning to milk just doesn't work, have to move the dial 10 times before light finally selects milk thoffing.

I have had the machine for about 19 months with no issues. After making my night coffee and then sitting down the mechine turned on whlist the light was off and started draining water in the drip tray. Only way it would stop if I unplugged it from the power point. When I plug it in it’s starts turns on and makes noise as it’s making a coffee but drains all water in the tank into drip tray. Hi my mini barista machine is under extracting (10 seconds single shot and 20 seconds double shot) no matter what grind size I use. I grind my coffee beans with sunbeam grind fresh machine. The time and pace of coffee extraction doesn't alter no matter what grind size I try. The coffee on single shot tastes bad and with double shot the coffee is more sour with finer grinds and ok with slightly coarser grind but still suboptimal. What else can I do to improve coffee extraction?

Have had my Barisra max for a week now and can only get it to work using a very coaresly ground coffee. Grinder is set to 29. Anything less slows the extraction time virtually down to nothing. Have tried 3 different types/brands of beans. Only using the single wall filter baskets that were supplied and even though preground coffee isn't meant to work, it works just fine.
