Need earmuffs to use the frother
Today I bought a Sunbeam Piccolo espresso coffee machine, replacing a Sunbeam Cappuccino Machine I had happily used for a couple of years. I was pleased with the coffee, but when I started to use the frother I was amazed how noisy it is. It was so loud it was annoying my ears. Are they all like this? I am seriously thinking of taking it back to Big W tomorrow. Is it worth trying another, someone said "Just buy a separate milk frother. But no, that's not good enough I should be able to use the one in my new machine.

Brilliant machine for one or two people!
Have owned several of these coffee machines over the past decade.
As someone who has a lot of experience as a Barista (professionally and otherwise) and incredibly fussy when it comes to coffee, this unit makes great coffee. In fact, I would put it as a better result then 90% of places I've ever had coffee at. Most of this would be due to user error, not the machine/s itself.
Beautiful strong, robust crema, very easy to use and a milk frother that produces dense, thick results, perfect for making a great coffee.
Ideal for one or two people, but a pain for more.
Makes a coffee for one in only a couple of minutes, with a minimum of fuss.

Very nice little machine
Good machine for the price and fits perfectly in my small kitchens. It makes good coffee with a nice crema on top, also the frotter is very good. The only negative thing about my review can be I can not make a strong coffee even though I use dark roast beans. My previous machine which was eurolab was making a stronger coffee and I think it might be because this machine has a smaller space to put the ground coffee. Any suggestions from Sunbeam?
Good crema and good frotting
Small water tank, doesn't make a strong coffee

Great Machine, Poor Quality
The machine itself made fantastic coffees, however after 6 months of light usage mine has failed.
When the steam wand is used, it is now pushing steam through the coffee head which is not only rather annoying, it reduces the steam output on the wand. I sent a customer services email and did not get a response within 3 working days. Called and now I need to take it to a service center - and probably pay for it because we didn't think to keep the receipt.
Not satisfied with the quality of this product. I realize it's a lower cost machine but six months is not long enough.
made good espresso and cappuchinos, low cost
only lasted six months of light use

Good machine - if u know what ur doing
For the price this is a great machine. Works best with a firmly packed medium or fine grind.
The cup warmer isn't the best, If you want hot cups use boiling water.
Seems there's a fine line with a cold and weak cup of coffee when using this, but as soon as you work out your timings it is pretty consistent.
Cheap, fast, when used properly makes a great coffee.
Cup warmer warms 1/3 cup, struggles to fit a regular coffee cup, can be difficult to find you "sweet spot" for making a perfect cup

Had to return for a refund!
I purchased this coffee machine after reading some good reviews and it was a great price from Big W. I filled the water jug and water began leaking out of the bottom of the machine. After cleaning the excess, I tried to make a coffee. I have owned coffee machines before, and am not a novice. The coffee came out of the machine as usual but then as the machine switched off, a great burst of steam, and excess water gushed out of the bottom of the machine into the are that the cup sat. What a mess! I tried it again with exactly the same results. Ma...Read more
chine was brought back to Big W the next day for a full refund as I was not interested in exchanging for another. Compact size, economic price. Water reservoir leaked and machine also leaked after making a cup of coffee.1 comment

Should have known better.
So, I'm needing a short term cheap espresso machine and only need it to last 6 months before I move house which I then plan on spending upwards of $600 on a larger better machine.
After reading all these reviews it seemed this would be perfect. Supposedly makes a good coffee but with a short life span. Perfect! sort of..
So I went out this morning and bought one from Big W for $98. Great.
I called past my favourite coffee roaster and bought some tasty expensive coffee.
Got it all set up in 5 minutes, ready to go with my nice expensive g...Read more

Disappointed
My husband was given this coffee machine as a Father's Day Gift early September 2013. Since then, we have made 130 cups of coffee...that's all! It stopped working a couple of days ago. Same trouble of those mentioned below. Won't pump the water through. Water comes gushing out the outlet tray at the bottom. We went through the book and followed all the instructions. Rang the customer service and because we don't have the receipt, we will have to pay to get it fixed. Not happy and would never buy a Sunbeam again.
OK when it works
Broke after 130 cups of coffee

I have contacted the Team Leader. Even though the coffee machine was a present, I am trying to locate the receipt so that the faulty machine can be swapped. This can't happen without a receipt.

Same Problem
How weird, I have a similar problem to Kate. My machine is 18 months old and a few months ago started sometimes pushing out steam from the front when I frothed the milk, but still worked. Today I turned it on and - whoa, it started making a noise as if it was making the coffee and steamer is right up the creek - gushing out water into both the jug and the tray. I tried the suggestion offered to Kate but made no difference. Apart from this morning's shock I love this machine, especially for the price. Was about to go to a shopping centre fo...Read more

Safety warning!
I have bought 3 of these machines in the last 18 months for work, for home and for a charity I work with, because they are fantastic. But please be aware - I turned the machine on today (the 18 month old one) and it started making a weird noise straight away, as if the pump was on (which it wasn't) and wisps of smoke came from the coffee dispenser part. Of course I turned it straight off. Has anyone else had this prob? We've always taken care of ir, always have water well above min line. Out of warranty. Design fault? Think I might take the other 2 back in case! Please don't leave yours turned on and unattended in case..

Worked great for cheap machine
Worked pretty well for $98 machine. As soon as it was out of warranty though, one of the lips on the group handle broke off while it was running causing coffee grounds and hot water to be sprayed everywhere. It worked fine for 12 months, but in month 13 the group handle lip broke. Looking at the group handle after it broke I could see that the metal is fairly thin, even so, I used it correctly, didn't put it under too much pressure. Cleaned the filter regularly. As it was out of warranty Big W wouldn't replace the group handle and to buy a new ...Read more
one costs too much considering more could break soon so I don't want to risk it. Would rather get a machine that will continue to work longer than the warranty. EDIT: Problem has now been sorted by sunbeam. Group handle shouldn't break like that. Actual machine still running well. Changed to 4 stars now. Still a great machine for $98. cheap, worked well for price parts broke4 comments

Great machine
Small foot print is great to start with. This machine can make great coffee and it is super cheap. Spend the rest of your money on a good grinder $150+ and fresh beans (buy small amounts so you get through it quickly before it goes off). Practice and read about how to make a good coffee and you will be set for a great return on your purchase price. Pro tip of the day: Keep you machine clean and perform cleaning maintenance described in the manual. This will give you more consistent results on some of the cheaper models.
Foot print pump, overall design.

does not fit standard mugs
Makes a good coffee but none of my mugs or cups fit under it, rang customer support to see if the height could be adjusted and the man was very abrupt and couldn't care less, told me to go and buy some smaller mugs! went to shops today with measurement and only found one set of cups that would fit under machine, and now its pretty much a mouthful of coffee and thats it! Disappointing as on the box and on product information it says fits standard sized mugs. Considering none of my mugs fit under it then surely this is fake advertising???
nice coffee, esy to use
No mugs or cups fit under it.

Does anyone know how to make it froth?
I'm happy with the quality of this machine's coffee. However I can't get it to froth the milk. It SCREAMS (if I was at work I think I'd be required to wear earplugs!) but only heats the milk - no froth at all. As far as I can tell I'm following the instructions exactly. Anybody have any hints?
The coffee is fine, for the price paid.
No froth

Dear Liz, please contact our Customer Care Coffee line on 1300 881 861 for assistance.
To froth your milk you have to tilt the jug the same angle as the wand and place the tip of the wand under the surface of the milk, it sucks all the air and bubbles out of the milk so it is expected to have a whistle noise.
I just Started using my frother it just spits out a bit of water than stops working

disappointed
Initially we loved this machine except for the fact that the end result wasn't hot enough. If you can be bothered to heat your cups with boiling water before brewing then you will end up with a great cup of coffee. Alas after 3 weeks the rubber head seal tore and we had to buy replacement seal. We bought 2 seals just in case. A week after we installed the new head seal....it started to blow through the seal covering everything in water. The machine then became electrically live and would give a shock if touched. Once dried out we tried again. S...Read more
ame thing. The pressure during brewing would cause the rubber seal to move from its seated position and water squirts everywhere again!.... aaaarg!... this also happens with both brand new rubber head seals. We are going to invest in a better model. Initially good coffee taste Head seal has a design fault. Blows out of position causing big mess and electrocution hazard.2 comments
Did you end up buying a new machine? And if so, what did you get. I am needing to return mine (if they will take it back) and replace it because of the plastic smell in the tank. TIA
We bought a Gaggia Baby. It is absolutely wonderful!...

Poor customer Service
Purchased a Piccolo 9 months ago and until now it has made a very nice coffee. However, as of this week it has stopped working, in that water is no longer going through the brew head or steam arm (its simply being pushed straight through to the drip tray). I contacted customer service today to see if there was any possible solution, and believe it or not, the only advice offered by the surly customer rep. I spoke to was that I "should give it a thump". Needless to say this technical advice has not resolved the problem. So, in summary, up until ...Read more

I know this machine is cheap, so I wasn't expecting the world, but it truly isn't fit for purpose. Yes water runs through it and dark liquid comes out - Fast! No amount of fine grinding or hard tamping will slow it down. As a result, the coffee extracted tastes awful every time. At least I can say the machine is consistent.
Before returning the machine, I did try to contact Sunbeam for support. That was almost a month ago, and still no reply. A visit to their website reveals that a 6-10 second extraction is considered standard for their mac...Read more
hines. No wonder the coffee is so bad when a decent shot requires around twice this extraction time. If you do decide to try this machine, purchase it somewhere with a liberal return policy. Definitely not the Good Guys. May be an OK option for those on a super-tight budget who plan to use pre-ground coffee and enjoy a weak brew further diluted with milk. Otherwise, save for a little longer and get something that actually does its job properly. Consistency - consistently bad Extracts coffee too fast, so resulting shot tastes bad. Comes with pressurised filter baskets to create false crema, so useless if wanting to use fresh coffee beans ground at home.1 comment

I have had many coffee makers over the years from cheap and nasty to good. Help!! Can anyone tell me please, if there should be a single hole in the base of each of the 1 and 2 cup filters?
Mine have no holes, yet I can't see anything in the instruction booklet about piercing the holes initially. Although in the 'Care and Cleaning' section, it states "Insert a pin into the single hole in the base of the filter".
2 answers
Yes. There is a single hole in the exact centre of the base of each filter. It is below the words 1-Cup or 2-Cup.
You don't have to make the hole it is already there.
Bob
Thank you Boba. I was expecting the holes to be right through the filters, which is not the case. On closer inspection after reading your answer, I could see it clearer, They are like shallow holes!!!

Yes you can.
I got one a couple weeks back from eBay, it was about $18 delivered. Just search for Sunbeam EM2800 coffee machine seal.
The hard part is getting the old one off. I used a precision flat-blade screwdriver, and made the change in under a minute.
Just be sure to clean the surface of the machine, under the seal. You will be surprised at how much coffee sneaks its way under there.
Thanks Shane
I appreciate you taking the time to answer my question.
All the best to you.

The steam pressure is not working. I turn it on and wait a few seconds and then the steam that’s built up expels through the machine. This is the second time I’ve bought this sunbeam piccolo machine because of its capability. And the second time I’ve had this issue, it’s only just outside of its 12 month warranty also. What can I do?
1 answer
I usually turn my machine on about 10 minutes before I want to use it. It only takes about 30 seconds to warm up though. On my one, the steam can take a couple of cycles of the internal pump, then it gets going properly. Mine dumps the excess steam through the water outlet, once I turn the dial back to the top position.
Hopefully this description helps you.
