Complete Battery/System Failure after 2 years of use - 2nd TomTom and the last I will tollerate!
Logic on navigation at times ridiculous, last tomtom I had would take you to intersections with traffic lights, regardless of the setting (ie: Fastest or Shortest Route) the GO520 would take you to some of the worst intersections at the worst possible peak hour times.
Battery absolutely crapped itself a month ago, started losing maps/memory etc, now it has just crapped itself and wont even power up. Paid $287 from JB Hi-Fi, now changing to a Garmin (again) went back to Tom Tom because the Garmin irritated me (similar issues with Navigation as mentioned above) however I am so disappointed in the New GO 520 I will try another Garmin.
Sat Nav's suck!

Should not have waisted my money
I do the updates and the speed zones are still wrong. Life time updates don't include speed camera updates. Very slow to pick up my location. Never again Tom Tom

Good for somethings rubbish for updating takes forever and overnight to update
Do like but hate the connect to your wifi it takes ages to update if direct connected to your wifi it does not help if your wifi is rubbish to begin with i prefer to update via the app it does it much quicker usually but updating the go520 is ridiculous i would not recommend it can take all night to update its rather annoying i think i will go back to my old tom tom start 50 i prefer that much better it updates quicker because you sync it to the mydrive connect app the go520 wants you to connect straight to your wifi as i have said my wifi is w...Read more

Having second thoughts
I bought the 520 in an emergency as my older go via kept shutting down and I think it is way past its use by date, the older one was not that great as I have mentioned on here previously but I cant believe that this newer model is even more inferior than my older one, there are so many functions and abilities missing on the new one that I had on the older one and as yet after a couple of days and a few hours of mucking around on my laptop the device will not connect, which is annoying because it will not connect to my wifi device either, I alr...Read more
eady regret buying it and because I'm always on the move doing different caretaking jobs I'm unable to take it back to the place of purchase and because of TomToms bad reputation I'm loathe to start posting the device to receive a replacement that could be just as bad, I will wait a couple of months and revisit the site to give another opinion.Purchased in May 2021 at JB Hi-Fi Retail Stores for A$249.00.

Not recommend
The map is quite accurate. However, the search engine is terrible, most of the time you can't search the places by their names, you must input the full address. Not recommend this product unless you are a p plater

Good so far - Why the bad reviews??
I've had a TomTom GO 520 for a short while now and I like it. I don't understand the bad reviews and felt I had to submit a good one to add some balance. Out of the box it was easy to set up. I had no problems connecting to my home Wifi and iphone7 Bluetooth (with personal hotspot activated). I registered a new Tomtom account and the lifetime World Maps, Traffic and Speed Cameras (free with purchase price) registered in the settings immediately. Initially Traffic and Speed Cameras took about half an hour to become available and working but sin...Read more
ce then they activate within a few minutes of turning on the device. The touch screen is accurate and fast - no problems with other letters appearing randomly (unlike my 5yr old Garmin). Maps work fine; satellite reception is quick and reliable; readability is good; screen is bright; speed camera and traffic indication work well. I haven't come across a mobile speed camera yet but I'm looking forward to seeing if it has been reported by someone else and shows up on the GPS. Speed limits can be out of date but that's not unusual with the rate they get changed in Australia and particularly Melbourne where I live. They were no better on my Garmin even with up-to-date maps. I like the magnetic clamp - it's easy to put the device in the car and take it out. If you travel overseas and use your GPS, then this GPS is very attractive with free lifetime World Maps. It will pay for itself in 2 years. I've got Oceania and Europe maps installed and still have 3Gb spare. You can add more memory with up to 32Gb memory card. I recommend this device and suggest you read the professional reviews which are far more believable than the reviews in this thread (and No, I'm not associated with TomTom in any way).Similar opinion? Tom Tom Bom
I have been using (but not very successfully) this unit for quite some time and it is a load of crap.
And they have the hide to ask you for $50 for camera updates for 1 year (no way).
It is about to be thrown in the garbage bin and I suggest to anyone to use maps with their mobile device.

Don't buy it
TomTom 520 it's very bad product, high price for bad quality, the map not right like Google map even with the update, many addresses not existing, Restricted route, which made for me confused as a new driver also keeps hanging, the battery low, problems in connecting with the application in map, I am so disappointed.

Due to 2G turned off, had to buy current model that would work with traffic etc.
TomTom GO520 is the most frustrating TomTom device I have ever owned. Very difficult to setup and keep working. Requires numerous soft "TomTom" restarts. When you get it eventually working and using "MyDrive" on your mobile, be prepared to find that the app is using very high battery usage. On my Pixel 2, you cannot turn MyDrive on or off as when required. I Have owned 4 previous TT devious over the last 10+ years but am sure this is my last TT. The only reason I "invested" in the GO520 was due to the fact that 2G was turned off.
With the development of traffic and routing, "Google Maps and Traffic" app is a very good alternative.

Forced upgrade
I'm another person who was forced to upgrade to get live maps since the closure of 2G
Traffic updates work via my mobile phone data, when they feel like it.
Get a lovely map on the go520 telling of no traffic delays while I'm idle in traffic.
Worse piece of junk. Only upgrades wireless, handy sitting in your own driveway, not away from known wireless network .And it wants that twice a week.
Mine reboots it self whenever it wants to.
Time to look at a Garmin I think.

Wait for something better if you want a tomtom, doesn't have a button that glows when charging, so if you have a faulty connection you wouldn't know till the battery was flat, has this stupid pop that comes up on the screen, saying welcome to priority driving, doesn't have a different sound for over speeding, swiping.

Drive slow or you'll miss the turn; texting camera is next feature needed; right-turning to two-way
After giving up my last TomTom GPS device 4 years ago due to battery depleting, I eventually picked up TomTom Go 520 for my daughter due to the driving law requiring a green-L plate driver should not use a smart-phone as GPS. Thanks to the dictative police in New SouthWales Australia (e.g. Sydney).
Frankly, TomTom Go 520 is not better than the last one I owned. The symbol of my car on the device is always behind the road I need to turn into. And after I actually turn, the device's map takes another 2 seconds or more to show. Definitely th...Read more
e TomTom Go can only be a supplementary product to any driver not familiar with the precinct. My 4-year-old iPhone 6+ performs in par with Waze, Apple Maps and Google Maps for navigation responsiveness. My daughter's iPhone X outperforming TomTom Go 520 is a no brainer. Cars in Australia are right-side driving. TomTom forgets it and always recommends routes that include turning right into a 6-lane road, by crossing a 3-lane traffic from the right side, without traffic-light control, to merge into some busy 3 lane traffic from the left at 70 kph (realistically speeding at 80+ kph or even 90+ kph for most cars). No improvement for at least 10 years. Recently, NSW police have been crazily installing cheap but powerful "texting cameras" everywhere. In a single day, I can spot over 20 of them installed to trap people using their mobile phones, which is not allowed in NSW Australia. More precisely, you're not allowed to touch any added devices, including TomTom Go 520, while driving. Don't "add" a texting camera to the TomTom Go 520 (like what you can do on a speeding camera or a red-light camera) when you see one, because the texting camera may record your touching of the device and send you a fine. It can be very easy for TomTom to add a new "type" of camera to be reported (by the passenger) and gradually build up a database. If you are using TomTom products and aware of texting camera in your place, please submit a feature request of texting camera alert to TomTom.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

DO NOT BUY TOM TOM - CHOOSE ANOTHER BRAND
We replaced our original Tom Tom as it was extremely old. This model is just AWFUL. It is new and we haven’t been able to use it as although we are in WA it tells us we are in Sydney. It has been returned to the manufacturer who supposedly fixed the problem. It was sent back to us in the same condition with EXACTLY the same problem. We are going overseas in a couple of weeks time without the Tom Tom as now is has to be returned again. Customer service is ZERO. We have also had to pay the postage whenever it is returned. I wish the company would wake up to what their customers are experiencing and feeling about a shabby, unreliable product. Shame on you

Tom Tom Go/52 disappointing
I was Driving from Florida to Delaware the GPS took us 2 hours out of the way. When I called they told me to do a reset. The biggest thing the GPS does NOT let you know if there is a delay. My old Tom Tom let me know there are delays ahead and let me know if I was still on the fastest route. Sometimes it would say do you want to save time taking another route not this one. The rep told me to connect my GPS to my phone WiFi if I have to connect to my phone why do i need the GPS?

Good device, plagued by really bad Bluetooth connectivity
We had Garmin for many years and it worked well. The major frustration with the Garmin was inability to look up destinations on the mobile or web and send them to the device (there is a Garmin companion app, but it is really horrid and slow - unusable).
Tom Tom has My Drive web portal and an excellent companion app - so we bought the 520.
In theory, all the destinations and routes from the app, the portal and the device are synced in the background, but in practice it is done via Bluetooth link with the phone, which in practical sense just do...Read more

Rubbish
This is my third TomTom - couldn’t connect to the blue tooth on my iPhone for traffic- maybe if I tried 100 times I would get a successful connection once - finally got a replacement from TomTom and gues what? Same problem again with inability to connect to Bluetooth on iPhone for traffic - if this is the way TomTom does products then it won’t be in business very long

I have a Blue&Me TomTom 2 that came with my Fiat Panda. It apparently requires an update post 6th April, but doesn't ever work. TomTom's website offers to upgrade to the Go 520 at a discount price to replace the unit, but doesn't mention if it fits in the Fiat's built-in hard wired cradle nor does it say it works with the Blue&Me system like the old unit. Does a new 520 fit, despite being physically bigger than the old model? Does it work with Blue&Me and the steering wheel controls?

Hi dave mine has never done that we are in nz at moment and works extremly well only time it turns off is when battery is flat when i have not had usb connected right
We have the vent-mount and it can become intermittent (dirty contacts) or it just gets shaken a bit loose. There should be a micro-USB socket on the back - plug it into a mains-powered USB charger or a PC and see if that fixes the problem. If so then it is your car power system. I have observed that USB cables fail (thin wires and much flexing) and vehicle USB plug-packs sometimes work their way out of the socket. You could also see if the car power system will operate something else - if not then suspect that.
