Tried to talk with someone at Avis with no success. hidden charges include hundreds extra to collect from the airport and their expensive insurance had a $4700 excess!! Go elsewhere
HOBART AIRPORT OVERCHARGED AND NO RESOLUTION AFTER 8 WEEKS,
I was Quoted $3172.27 from Avis Email Reservations for 103 days fully inclusive, When I returned the car I was Charged $4737.13, After more than 12 emails to customer service there has been no resolution to my request for a refund, every request I made was handled by a different agent. Not Happy with Mandatory Insurance Charge and an Extra $300.00
I have a policy with an insurance company that covers the rental car. I am told I have to pay the LDW Charge and it is mandatory. This is a rip off when I already have a policy with an insurer. The agent on chat said it is mandatory and terminated the chat before I could ask if I could email the policy I had. Luis was the Chat person. I was not aggressive but did say it was a Rip Off.
I checked the price of higher 3 weeks ago and it is now $300 a week more. I should have booked it back then. But I resent paying for Insurance when I already have cover and can email a copy of this.
AVIS North Parramatta and AVIS Budget Lost Property
I would like to review several aspects of Avis both which are complimentary. And this definitely is not a paid review.
Firstly I (via my insurer) hired a car from Avis Parramatta North after dinging mine. The whole check in/checkout process was pretty painless. Avis was obliged to give me the cheapest car. Korrin bent over backwards to get this to me and do so with as less stress as possible, due to some difficult circumstances. I was actually really touched. Overcharged and no resolution
Quoted $864 for 4 day rental. Charged $925 on return of vehicle then charged an extra $1234 a week later. Call centre in Philippines can’t resolve. Now consumer affairs! Use another company
Wasted 3 hours of my time at the airport
The person I was dealing with onsite was friendly enough, but does need more training in manual transactions. My card declined due to the third party payment system taking cash advancement payments instead of a 'hold' payment. I was on the phone to the bank for ages only to find out that the issue is with Avis. My card worked everywhere else. After having to taxi to and appointment and then coming back to the airport asking if there is another way to put the payment through, the customer service person said she could try manually. This should've been an option 3 hours ago when I first arrived at the desk and my card did not go through. Don't try calling their helpdesk either... terrible!
AVIS Noosa
Found Karen at AVIS Noosa to be outstanding to deal with. Sorted cars with ease and had a great demeanor. Have always found AVIS to be reliable, but Karen had such great customer service that I wanted to comment.

i rang avis this morning and booked pajero from 11th june 2021 launceston - return hobart 17th june 2021
the guy named Leo - took my credit card details and told me my total hire rates was $851.82 and $220 for child seat and excess waiver.
He charged me 851.82 and told me excess and child seat payment can be made when picking up vehicle but when he sent me the invoice the - total was -1160$, i told him that it doesent match what you said to me .The payment had already gone through and he cant do anything. I spent another 40 mins rang customer
Rockhampton AVID
Worst company ever. They stole my card details by breaking the law. They wrote CC details including expiry date and sensitive ccv. They REFUSED to charge me on the spot, after I left they caused drama and charged $1340 on one card, and the $700 refund they held on another card has not showed up yet.
Absolute scam bags of the earth. Don’t go there. Avis customer service send me enail from fake address and Rockhampton manager Danny has tandrums. They referred me to Kane in Brisbane who is also useless in refunding or solving issue so I am taking it to PCI compliance people to stop this theft

Great service from Avis in Longreach until I was overcharged on vehicle return. Customer service was terrible in failing to resolve the matter. I’d use an alternate company in future.

Money grabbing liars
I am really, really disappointed with Avis. I called to advise I was going to be returning the car late for which they advised an additional day charge would be applied to my booking. I agreed and said that’s fine I will keep the car for another 24 hours if I was going to be charged for it. They advised to bring the car back as soon as we could and we could discuss the further charge. I had an Avis hire car due to a not at fault accident. When returning I stopped and filled the fuel tank then drove 4km to drop it off. Unlike HERTZ, the guy didn’t come out and check the car for damage and fuel level. The next day my credit card was charged $26.47. When I enquired why, I was told it was to fill the car with fuel. I argued that I had filled the tank only 4km up the road so if they had to refill it, it should not have cost more than a couple of dollars. This is equivalent to theft. Avis took $450.01 out of my account to hire a car for 1 day on the 15/1/21. They said $200 of this was a bond and that it would be refunded after 4-5 days. 5 days later they took a further $256.45 out of my account for a total of $706.46. I rang them today to ask why and they told me the initial $405.01 will be credited back to me within 10 days and it is currently "Pending" and will be released by my bank. My bank balance is therefore currently $706.46 in the red. This company take money out of my account as they please, then tell me it is now my banks concern to release it back to my account. Don't trust this company!!!!
Incompetent
Arrived in Cairns on Monday 11th of January 2021. There was a cast of thousands at the counter (most doing very little) yet had to wait more than 30 minutes after processing my reservation. I use AvisBudget on a regular basis, but this will be the last time.

The ubiquitous complaints about Avis all over the web is very real!
I am a regular business and leisure traveler ( until 2020 of course!) and a member of the supposedly elite Wizard program and as such was initially attracted to their glossy offers.
I discovered that most of these offers are misleading bordering on misrepresentation and the quoted charges are predominantly very different from the actual final charges. Sure, most car rental agencies practice some form of over charging but the consistency and magnitude of Avis questionable
Can’t trust their online booking and customer service non existent
Confirmation of reservation received online - phoned site to confirm pickup and told no vehicle after all - queried the information online and number and told “that’s just how the system works
Poor customer service
Via a phone call Avis staff adviced their office was open, we traveled 30km in rural Vic to pick up the car and surprise surprise the office was closed... Thank you, Avis! Never you again!
They could not honour their reservation and failed to deliver.
Very poor customer service. Even though Avis confirmed the reservation three times by email and once by phone, they could not deliver the vehicle, even worse the location was closed until 2021. Overseas call centres on which they rely on have no idea what is going on in Australia.
A great experience with Avis at Hobart airport
This was the first time we have rented through AVIS as we usually rent through a competitor. We collected a vehicle from Hobart Airport for a two week period. We ended up with an upgraded vehicle and organizing a slight extension to the hire arrangement was also done fairly easily. We were greeted at the airport by a lovely representative in the carpark to assist with the return. I rented from AVIS in Bendigo last week. They over-charged my account without telling me, and even more on the second debit. I overheard a woman who got charged 3x while I was picking up the car, I thought it was random. But no, and the guy who I asked on the other line doesn't even listen and told me he'd call me back. NO CALL, I have to keep chasing until I get my money back. AVIS - just close your shop if you can't do proper service!!!
Disgraceful costumer service
Avis your costumer service is disgraceful too say the least. I rang the office on Pitt Street, Sydney on many occasions but nobody bothered to pick up the phone. I also rang your costumer service 136333 and after a long wait I spoke to a person you couldn't understand. It's not good enough - use Australian call centres. Won't be renting with Avis again.
Narrabri Avis
Booked a car a week before pick up. Arrived to pick the car up, the Avis office was locked no one was there. Waited for 30min. Phoned Avis, was on the phone for another 30 minutes spoke to 10 people explaining that no one was here. They then managed to get a hold of the person that in charge of the Narrabri office and transferred my call to her. She then proceeded to tell me that she was 2hours away getting her tax done and I would not be getting a car as she hadn't checked her computer and therefore didn't know about the booking that was booke

I will never hire with Avis again, after dropping our car back a day early for them to fix a tiny stone chip. Avis never repaired it, hired the vehicle to the next renter and the chip turned into a massive crack across the whole windscreen.
We are now being blamed for this crack from the other driver and Avis and are being forced to pay for a whole new windscreen !?! Very dodgy tactics. I’ve called multiple times, sent numerous emails with photos but have still not had the charge reversed. Stay away
Going back to hertz
First time renting an avis after years of using hertz and end up buying a windscreen because of a small stone chip. Going back to HERTZ where Ive never experienced anything like this.
Call Center incompetence and Maroochydore airport hours of operation
In an attempt to hire a car online for pick and drop off at Maroochydore Airport outside of 11am-3pm Mon-Fri is next to impossible. I am mindful of limited flights into Maroochydore but one would think that on the days there are scheduled flights that would be taken into consideration - very short sighted business sense. Charged an extra day and took the money out of my account without permission and without any notification a week after car returned on my rental supplied by NRMA, first they said I returned the car the day after I had returned it and then when I proved that this was not true, then changed to it was returned over 2 hours later than the time I had collected which is also untrue and I’ve been able to prove this also, extremely shady and dishonest company, go somewhere else, do not trust this company! Wish I would have read their reviews before I accepted a rental from them as dishonest charges seem to be a pattern for this company! Extremely dishonest!
Alice Springs service
The poorest customer service and communication I have ever experienced. I will never be using Avis again and the Alice Springs branch is shocking. No help with a punctured tyre (which was like that on pick-up), a simple invoice took 6 weeks to obtain, the branch never answering their phone, counter not attended, road side assistance driving off (with no assistance), extremely poor management of the whole situation. Terrible.
Extraordinarily rude and arrogant
If there was an option for ZERO stars this company would qualify! My daughter went to hire a car at short notice from Avis in Toowoomba last Sunday 6th September and was confronted by a rude, short tempered lady that is an affront to any customer service operation. I told my daughter to "forget it and go to Europcar" just a short distance away and they were able to hire a car from them, stress free. This experience has cemented the view of three people, my daughter, my son-in-law and me, to never hire a car from this company. The contrast at Europcar could not have been more stark.Don't do it!
I have been provided with an Avis car due to an insurance claim. I hope I never have to deal with this hopeless company again. I was told I could drop the car back at the airport but the key box was inside the building and not accessible (Covid-19). So, I was unable to return the car. Local support out here in Alice Springs is not unavailable and the service team over the phone disconnected my call several times as they simply didn't have a solution for my situation. Whatever you do - stay away from Avis.
Ripped off by the Artarmon location
Booked and paid the car in full online before picking up. Decided to purchase an insurance for extra cover which was supposed to be 35*3=105. Returned the car earlier than scheduled time with full fuel tank filled 300 meters away from Artarmon location. So the only charge I should have it the extra 105 insurance I purchased. However, they charged me $157 instead and explained the reasons of:
1. premium location- I picked up and return to the same location with no delay
2. fuel service- filled right before return 300m away from their store.

I expect car hire companies to be generally lacking in ethics, but as I have read in the latest few reviews, it seems that they continue to chase you for money for repairs for dubious damage months and months after the hire took place. It is as though they are situated in hell and chase you through eternity because you signed a contract with them and that the contract is not for car hire, but in fact for your soul. It is a good warning that when you sign a contract with the devil, expect consequences.
Worst self insurer to deal with
I had a car accident with one of their cars in Feb this year. I wasn't at fault and have been trying to chase them to settle my claim but always told their hirer hasn't paid the excess fee yet so I had to recover my loss directly with the hirer. I happen to lost the details of the hirer from my mobile phone and they're not even trying to help at all. The claim administrator company, Van Ameyde, is the worst to communicate with. I had to repeat what I'm asking them multiple times in email for them to reply with what I think is template of answers, their focus is basically to reject, delay, and minimise the claim at other people's expense. Now it's at the end of July and my claim hasn't been settled yet. Worst one ever.

We did not get the class of car that we contracted to hire. Repeated requests for a refund have been refused and we have been advised:

AVIS insisted on having a minor scratch on the bumper of our hire car after we returned it, as per their policy to swindle as much money out of customers as possible. I had full insurance and paid the repair cost. My insurance company then informs me that the AVIS invoice is incorrect, >$100 extra added to the $600 bill - an 'accounting error'.
The insurance company will not cover the repair cost until I receive the refund from AVIS for this overpayment and a new invoice is issued.

I am an Avis preferred member but will never use them again after two very negative experiences with Avis (Barcelona airport Aug 2018 and Melbourne Airport Jan 2020). In both cases additional costs were added after I returned the vehicles. In Spain there was over 200 euros of unexplained additional charges. It took 2 months to get the money back. This is directed at the Avis phone booking service, Unfortunately there isn’t a negative star because that’s what I’d give. Bit of advice, instead of waiting for your customers to spend $50 in a taxi to tell them you require 2 forms of id with an address on before they can pick up a car (local hire). This policy has been in place since 2022, strange I didn’t require it 4 weeks ago. How about Avis employ locally to handle bookings instead of a call centre in the Philippines so these policies can be correctly communicated and save the front line staff from potentially volatile situations
Charged more than $70 what was quoted without any explanation
Horrible customer service. I called the customer service phone number 24hrs after i dropped off the car and noticed I was charged a significantly high amount than was quoted on the booking confirmation.
I was told they could not help me until 48hrs after dropping the car off and that I would receive a call back from them. I did not receive any call back. I waited more than a week for a call back.
