Our experience with the cannon fitzroy in built gas heater
This heater would be great if it did not have regular start up problems. In our 2.5 years of cannon ownership, we had trouble right at the beginning (heater would not start after installation and repair people needed to be called in); eighteen months later, same problem; now, just over 2.5 years, the thing again refuses to start. $4300 dollars for a heater that has regular start up problems??!!
Great heater when it works
Fails to ignite

With respect, your number is not much more functional than your heater. I had to listen to an answering machine tune before being informed, after 15 minutes, that I should leave a message or email you. Great service indeed.

Not a bad heater when it eventually starts!!
Had the Cannon Fitzroy installed a few years ago and has been nothing but trouble to get started. Towards the end of the warranty period we started having difficulty restarting.
"edit" After a Cannon representative responded to my first post I contacted Cannon and am very pleased that we have been able to come to a suitable outcome for both parties.
A repalacemnt heater has arived at my door and we are looking forward to a future of warm winters ahead.
Thank you to [name removed] at Cannon.

Dangerous
We had the Cannon Fitzroy installed eight years ago, so newer models might have improved, but it has been leaking highly dangerous levels of carbon monoxide, if you have one, please have it tested, ours now has a proper flue installed but I'm still worried,I keep doors open to improve ventilation and don't let my kids turn it on if I'm not around, by the way Sampford did not respond to emails regarding what I think is a dangerous product
Very dangerous

Disappointed
My mother purchased a cannon fitzroy in june 2012 installed and working very well. But two months later the heater stop working. Two parts were replaced and working well. this season we have the same problem again. the gas keeps going out and now once again running radiators to keep warm. I have done everything to wiping the heater before turning it on to at times having the off heater when vacuuming just to make sure there is no dust build up. Its is still under warranty. I would not recommend this heater untill cannon rectifys a common problem.
Its looks great
gas will not come through or it goes out this season it took six goes before it stayed on

I have had one for six years - has not missed a beat!
It seems a few people have had problems but mine, which was installed six years ago has never had any problems at all. It heats a large room with a vaulted ceiling easily and quickly and does not cost an arm and a leg to run. I guess people who do have problems tend to talk about them.
Great heat, rapid warm up, heats far morw space than the blurb says
Because it is dangerous!!!

Great Heater easy to use warms house well
I recently had a Cannon Fitzroy inbuilt installed I had read some not so good reviews about this product but decided to give it a go its been fantastic does everything it should do warms the house well my 80 yr old mother-inlaw has no trouble using it at all
It was competively priced easy to use and looks great
same as some of the other problems, Russell's Heating and Cooling did not want t know about it, rand IXL no help there, $4000 loss.
Second winter with heater has never given us any problems starts first time warms the house really well it is the best heater I. Had ever had I highly recommend the brand and the Fitzroy inbuilt
Thanks for your great feedback craiggoll - we're glad to hear that you and your family are satisfied with our heater. :)

Very happy with our heater
I had a Cannon installed at the start of winter and it has been perfect. A friend recently told me she had read some less than positive reviews so I thought I would have a look for myself and felt compelled to give another perspective. Provides a lovely heat, looks great and the remote lets us control the temp easily - all in all very happy with our purchase,.
The look and the beautiful heat!
New Fitzroy Inbuilt arrives with multiple problems
I have had three service calls under warranty. Problems with 'warm' restarts (heater fails to re-light and then beeps annoyingly) continue despite replacement of 'blue box' control unit. Remote thermostat does not seem to reliably control the unit. Fan is very noisy at medium and high speeds. BOTTOMLESS MONEY PIT
We had a cannon Fitzroy Inbuit fitted 10/02/2010 $5000 plus, it was repaired after weeks of being mucked around under warrantee when the ignition module expired 17/06/11, fast forward to 16/08/13 and the same item has expired this time at a cost of $584, the service dept will give you the run around and do their utmost to get rid of you, they obviously have a fault with the module and should be recalled or rectified, i will be contacting consumer affairs !! when you consider that the heater is only used during winter it has not has not done many hours of service, Considering the age of this heater and the problems i would not recommend anyone purchace one

When it works it is fantastic trouble is it doesn't work enough.service has come out 3 times, the last to replace burner,it worked for 2 weeks after this now back to it's old ways.we have had runaround from sampfords, the last time they told us to contact the service guy.very disgruntled customer with a faulty fitzroy cannon gas logfire.

Hi Benton, we have forwarded your review to the after sales team and will follow up with them to find out more on your case and see if we can help resolve this for you. Cannon
Mine has done the same for years...its costs me a fortune, no-one cares...its breaking down as we speak, last year I spent $500 getting new burners and ignitions switches (or something)...its really heartbreaking.
Feel free to contact me also Cannon...Im sick of spending money on it every year...its simply not fair.

Shocked by negative comments
I'm shocked by all the negative comments. I've had my Canon Fitzroy for 3 years now and love it. I put it in when I replaced my 21 year old gas heater. It works a dream. Yes it does make a bit of a bang as it heats and cools this is simply the box contracting and expanding I don't see this as any kind of flaw it's simply physics. The heater looks fantastic provides great ambience when it is turned on, this reduces the need to have lights on all the time during winter. It heats the house beautifully, I rarely ever have to turn it above the first setting. I do agree that it could be quieter but the noise certainly isn't overbearing.
Great heating and ambience
could be quieter
Your very lucky not to have a lemon

Unbelievably bad
We have had nothing but trouble with this heater. It doesn't always ignite properly and if we happen to turn it on then walk away we can come back to a room full of fumes - extremely dangerous. We have had the burners replaced twice but the problem persists. It is also very noisy - it rattles quite badly when the fan first comes on although the rattling does go away once the heater warms up. If we turn the heater down there seems to be some sort of contraction going on and the heater makes a loud bang as it cools. This can be quite frighte...
Read morening if you are not expecting it (guests especially have to be warned beforehand!). The remote control is hopeless. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't and even when it does work it is just as likely to turn itself off and then not come back on. We have now dismantled the remote control and stored it away! We are most disappointed with this heater and if we could only afford it we wouldn't hesitate to have it taken out and replaced with anything other than a Canon. Also, Sampford IXL are no help whatsoever. They don't return calls nor do they respond to comments left on their website. We are totally sick of them - and their terrible heater. We wish we had never bought it. It does look good and when it works it is effective and heats the room very well. It is unreliable and dangerous. This is exactly the issues I have had...its a piece of rubbish.

Have just had the remote control disconnected and manual switches installed. The remote control was temperamental and totally unreliable. Now the heater is operating very well and as directed. We had the remote only model which was only made for about 6 months....I can see why that was so. It sometimes would not start, sometimes it would start then operate for about an hour and not come on again all night. Was ready to chuck the whole unit out. Sampford were not much help. But had excellent service from a bloke referred by Wignells of Abbotsfor...
Read mored, who converted it from remote control to a manual switch. Am now happy again. We had a Cannon Fitzroy (with manual switch) installed in our last house and it operated very well in a small house. We were happy wiht the brand and bought another one as a result. It seems like some Australian manufacturers need to lift their game and provide better product quality and customer service if they wish to stay in business. flames are realistic and help to make you feel warmer! The remote control and /or thermostat- useless- 2 reviews
Double rubbish
I would not recommend a Cannon Fittroy to anyone.
The fan is noisy and when set on normal or boost you feel as though you're in a wind tunnel.
Heat isn't all that good my old heater missing all the old heat reflecting tiles produced more heat.
The heat/fan buttons on the side get too hot as that is where the heat is.
Looks good
Fan is noisy creates too much of a breeze uncomfortable to sit in front of, and it doesn't provide enough heat.

Rubbish
I bought the fire to heat my house, but would have trouble heating a telephone box.
You cannot have the heater on 3 as all it does is blow cold air out; we had the company back after 2 months and all they said was the gas pressure is to low adjusted it and no difference.
Once we can save up some money it is coming out and I will be prepared to lose the $5000 it cost to have installed.
It looks good
Blows out cold air most of the time not hot air

Read mored also produce fumes. Fails to light on a still morning. Keeps clicking to ignite and smells bad.Looks good but does not heat. Company were not good to deal with. About to rip out and send to scrap heap.Did you ever complain to energy safe Victoria regarding the fumes? We have had similar issues, but have not got very far?
Surprised
I've had one of these heaters for about 7 years now. I was looking on-line because I was thinking of getting another because I'm about to renovate. I'm surprised to see all those negative comments.
I've never had any trouble with it at all, and I'm happy with how it heats, and I really like its look.
Reliable. Love the look of it. Energy efficient.
Expensive.
Excellent heater
I have had this heater now for 3 years and it has worked perfectly with no problems at all. The timing control is great I can set it before I get home to heat the house and pre-set to turn off when I go to sleep. I have recommended this heater to others, who also have had none of the problems others spoke of.
Great instant heat. Love the high boost fan for those really chilly days. very cost effective way of heating my whole house.

Terrible
DO NOT, I REPEAT DO NOT!!!!!! buy this heater, you will be sorely sorry!!! I would not recommend this rubbish brand to my worst enemy!!! Do some research and buy one that at least has a decent warranty.
Funny how the maker only gives you 12 months warranty on it!!!!! I wonder why. It's about time maunufacturers of faulty, inferior quality items like this are put out of business.

Heater looks good but the lighter fails early and often. The company is very difficult to contact and we have now been waiting (in the middle of a Canberra winter) 5 weeks for a replacement lighter. Don't recommend.

working better than before
We have had our Cannon for 4 and 1/2 years and recently it failed to stay on - much as described by other reviewers - going on and off. It also had a really noisy fan as times.
I had my plumber have a look and he suggested replacing the blue box. I contacted Sampford by phone and email and they got back to me in 24 hours. We sorted out what part I needed and I paid on the phone ( about $230 ) and I had my part the next day! This was a surprise as I live in the country! I found the staff pleasant and efficient so maybe they have improved their ...
I am having this same problem after just 3 months and I'm on the frustrating path to getting it fixed. After initial "not my problem" response from supplier Sampford got back to me almost immediately...
Read more and are proving to be very responsive so far, sending someone out within 5 days with what I presume is the "blue box" you talk of.This heater is a piece of rubbish
When originally installed had a lot of trouble with it staying lit after lots of phone calls finally had a plumber who told me i had to leave a door open. Hello this is a heater keep all doors and windows shut. I had another plumber tell me that as the gas pipe run up into the roof and then down the wall to the heater that i had water in the gas line. The gas ducted heater (upstairs)and gas cooktop work fine. I had a flue installed with the original installation. But apparently this needed to be replaced with a power flue. (at an extra cost) after this it worked fine. However we are now back at the beginning and it will not stay lit. It is a piece of [censored word removed]
very unreliable
Totally unreliable and frustrating.
The ersatz logs are actually destroyed by the heat, and decompose leaving a soot that causes the heater to shut down. It has cost me a fortune in getting gas men to fix it. Four gas men recommended by Cannon at a cost of $160 per visit and the fire lasted a couple of months before shutting down again.
Now I take it apart myself and slean off the soot and then it works OK.
When it works it looks good, but it is not as efficient as my Rinnai Convector gas heater which cost a third of the amount, is smaller and puts out twice the heat.
Totally unreliable and frustrating.
Winter mornings frustration!
Problems within the first month starting the first light - bought from and fully installed through Origin energy and can only reccomend to stick clear buying anything from here, its a sale for them full stop. They did offer support by way of their flue installer and gas installer but both blaming each other after Cannon not haveing any other suggestion to fix. Cannon agency in Adelaide were supportive but a service was about best option. Its brand new, why should you need to do this every year and it does not fix the problem as two weeks after ...
Read morethe service its back to trying to start the heater again. Would not waste my time with either again and sorry for parting with my hard earned money! Heater usually does start with persistence after ten minutes by flicking both top buttons. Looks, heat when it works No answer to what seems a regular problem.Terrible
Shouldn't have bought it. The manufacturer KNOWS they have problems with the ignition, yet they won't alter the design.
Looks pretty
After being installed for only ten days the igniter doesn't work.
We're still waiting for the manufacturer to get back to us to find out what's going to happen.
