Does a 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander V4 have a timing belt or chain

1 answer
Phil
Phil

I've never seen a V4 model outlander

Are you sure it's not a 2.4 Litre Inline 4 PETROL ?
If so it uses a chain

If it's the V6 petrol it uses a belt (why i chose a 2.4 petrol less to replace)

Not sure about the 2.0 litre models

What problems have people experienced with the CVT transmission?

4 answers
Phil
Phil

Can't comment on the ZK model as i have the ZH 2010 model outlander 4 cylinder 4WD 2.4 litre
But my experience might have some relevance

No issues at 170,000kms. Always dealer serviced by the logbook
My vehicle did a lot of towing a trailer right up to 1600kg towing and 725 kg load limit of the vehicle
Up and down mountains to 1300m altitude as i built my own house and renovated a couple of other houses

I manual shift a huge amount as the mountain roads mean i use the engine rather than the brakes to mostly slow down or keep momentum up on the hills. The car remains in 4WD AUTO mode all the time with LOCK selected momentarily on the real slippery stuff.

My ZH model has a SEPARATE CVT auto transmission cooler rather than being combined as part of the radiator.
I believe both Ford (territory) and Nissan (xtrail) have this combined radiator arrangement and if the radiator splits then coolant from the engine can contaminate and totally destroy the auto transmission
It's the only reason i can see why the 2010 + Xtrails seem to trash their cvt autos using the EXACT SAME cvt jatco brand and model as the 2010 outlander. But it's usually at High Km's of 200,000 or more
Many fit a separate after market transmission cooler to avoid the issue, especially on the territory

Not sure how Mitsubishi do things now that they are owned partly by Renault !!!. ?

So CVT auto should be ok based on my experience if the services are followed and the Transmission doesn't overheat with excessive loading or sand driving and the engine radiator is NOT going to cause an issue if it splits

ALSO

Try and get the longest manufacturer warranty you can (mine was 160,000km's and 10 years drivetrain)
is about all you can do because if the CVT auto dies out of warranty then it's "Throwaway the car" as your looking at $7-$9k for a CVT replacement. Manufacturer warranty is at least peace of mind as these are expensive repairs

If i were to buy again a car NEW i probably would buy CVT again as i found a smaller 4 cylinder petrol engine (low torque non turbo) makes using cruise control possible without the normal (ANNOYING) hunting up and down the gears that a normal auto does. That's a big bonus for me

Thanks. Is that separate transmission cooler standard, an optional extra, or an after-market fitting?

HI. I have a 2016 zk 2l with CVT. My car developed a high pitched noise from the CVT at 7000km. Mitsubishi replaced the CVT oil and the noise went away for about 3,500 km. The noise only happens between the 1250 and 1450 rpm, just as the car is doing about 50kph. The noise only happens after the car is warm and the noise is worse on hot days, days over about 32 degrees. Mitsubishi advised me that it is a characteristic for the Outlander and they will NOT fix it. We have another Outlander which has done 20,000 and it hasn't developed a noise the CVT. If you buy an Outlander with a CVT then there is every chance that it will develop a whine in the transmission. The noise is loud enough to be heard over road noise and the radio when played at a low volume.

I'm thinking about an ES auto......petrol of course....It will do about 1-200 kilometres a week on average...BUT some of that will be towing a 15 foot tinny with a light 18hp motor.....I really only want to own/afford the two wheel drive version and I expect that should do me fine....The tows will be from 5-30km distance wise....80kmph tops......Probably do a long distance country drive every 6 months or so....without the boat....Otherwise it's Bunnings and bottle-shop runs.....Anyone here towing moderately with the ES version?

Hi there,

I have a 2007 Mitsubishi Outlander XLS......`is there a DIY way to accurately test/check if the 4x4 function is actually working when activated? The 4WD light on the instrument cluster comes on. but for some reason I don't think that it's actually mechanically engaging into 4x4 mode.....

Thank you.

I test mine with a standing start heavy throttle application on some loose gravel

2wd mode the front wheels will spin easily - esp light will come on to correct

4wd auto mode there will be less spin as the rear wheels engage very quickly - esp light will likely still come on and you will take off much faster

4wd lock mode you pretty much will rocket away without much spin - so esp light will most likely not come on at all or much.

I usually drive in 4wd auto mode on any slippery (wet) or dirt road or when towing) or hilly windy roads. Or 2wd mode in the flat city centers

4wd lock mode I only use on very slippery roads as I've had the "Diff wind up" where you get this shuddering through the car if you use it on dry roads. Can do damage I'm told so be careful to only use on slippery wet or dirt roads

Make sure all your tyres are the same brand/ size age too as this helps the 4wd system work correctly
Tyre outer size variability is not good for the 4wd system

I believe the 4wd system only works up to 100kmh then it cuts out. But it re-engages once below 100kmh again this is very good as some other brands cut out above 40kmh

Hope this helps

The petrol has a timing belt also there was a recall on the belt gears a few years ago. If that has not been done the belt will wear quick.

I had the 2.0l manual. But from memory 1250kg braked 750kg unbraked. Also from what I've heard the CVT's don't last long with heavy towing.

Outlander ZJ (2014-2015)

I recently purchased a petrol Outlander (Petrol Excell) and am very happy with it. I spend most f my time driving in 2WD ECO, however recently the 2WD eco indicator disappeared ( no idea why) so I took it to local dealer and he said to drive it in 4WD Eco. Do I have a problem with the auto transmission? I read the owner's manual but their is little or no reference to 2WD. When I press the 4WD button on the centre console their is no reference to 2WD. Can you help?

Hi Pete,
I own a diesel powered 2013 outlander which has a different auto gear box to the petrol versions however is similar in the 4WD settings.
My vehicle has 3 x 4WD settings to select. (No actual 2WD setting.)
4WD Auto (2WD until front drive wheels slip then engages the rear wheels. Quite responsive.)
4WD Eco (Same as 4WD Auto but not so much punch/power - I've found that I have to push on the throttle a bit more)
4WD Lock (Constant Power to all 4 wheels but responsive)
Does the car seem to go into 2WD?
Maybe the indictor in the dash isn't engaging.
I had strange things going on for a few hours with my electrics after installing a new entertainment system but did sort itself out.
Sorry I can't put my finger on the problem & I'm interested in what's causing this issue.
Although left hand drive cars I find that the American owners put a lot of comments & videos online regarding the Mitzy Outlander.
I do hope you get some resolution.
Cheers

If you check out the forums that have compared modes for fuel economy the 2wd is a waste of time.

Outlander ZJ (2014-2015)

Seeking clarification on the use of the ECO button in outlander 2014 on the dash, can this be used in 2WD? My assumption is after reading the manual that it can be used in 2WD and if the wheels slip it then engages 4WD, but the ECO 4WD mode saves on fuel? I wasn't sure if this should only be used when the 4WD button is selected. Thanks in advance

Hi Tam
I don't profess to be an expert on the Outlander and found the "ECO" button to be more like a sales gimmick. I would think that your nearest Mitsubishi Dealer should have all the answers on their products and should be in a position to explain how this stuff works....
