This is a chipper, not a shredder.
As other reviewers have found, this machine is very good for dry sticks and clippings. It produces chips about 1" long suitable for coarse mulch. If you want fine mulch you will be disappointed. Green clippings will also be chipped but not so successfully. I tried freshly cut agapanthus flower stalks. You don't get much wetter than that! The results were acceptable but a few stalks were crushed rather than chipped. Green leaves tend to pass through untouched. Be careful if you are chipping rose prunings - the thorns remain!

Both original and replacement jammed irretrievably
Handy sized tool which claims to shred palm fronds. Disappointed when mine jammed on green, leafy sticks and failed to respond to trouble-shooting routine. Replaced cheerfully but new machine failed in exactly the same way within minutes. My money was refunded without a fuss. I'd like to have been more positive!

Useless on freshly cut leafy branches- only good on DRY branches or sticks with no leaves
Bought this shredder after reading the great reviews on you tube. It quickly became apparent that this shredder is better suited to drier, hotter countries such as Australia, where the branches are drier and not as leafy. It is no co-incidence it is sold only through Bunnings. We live in New Zealand where the leaves are thick and the trees and general climate is wetter . Anyway, we started feeding dry, long and leafless sticks and branches into it with reasonable success. It comes out as coarse cubes. However, as is well known, the shredder's e...Read more
jection chute sits too low and so the collection device fills up quickly so so you have to spread the waste around the collection bin with your hand the as the material will start to clog up the ejection chute. We fed some leafy, freshly cut branches into it, and this is where the problems started. The leaves come off in the feed chute and start to clog it up. Given the narrow opening it's really hard to clear this chute unless you have a teaspoon or something to scoop out the material. And it doesn't have any means of opening it up to clear it. Second problem, because it doesn't cut these types of branches well, the ejected (sometimes uncut) branches hit the collection bin (because there's not enough clearance ) and start to clog up the ejection chute back through the shredder, because the machine is still running and cutting the rest of the branch, the rest of the cut material then sits in the shredder unable to get out, and causes one massive clog that has to be cleared. Given the poor clearance and the lack of any latch to get your hand into it to clear the clog, its almost impossible to get your hand inside it to clear it. The situation isn't helped with the narrow, tapering design of the chute, so this only worsens any clogging and makes it really hard to get your hand inside. So I had to constantly turn the shredder on it's side and free the jammed material that way.. It kept doing this every 15 minutes or so. We figured every branch would have to be prepared by removing any leaves and leaving the branch to dry out. Given the time and work needed we figured this shredder wouldn't be the problem solver we had hoped for so we took it back and got a full refund. Good on Bunnings for their excellent customer service.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

wasted money
if you are even THINKING of buying one of these DON'T WAST YOUR MONEY OR YOUR TIME LOOKING AT IT. it does not perform as shown in videos. if I could return mine I would do so right now. for $309 it is a TOTAL WASTE OF MONEY. the money would have been BETTER spent on a new motor for my ROVER mulcher

Marketing Dept makes it unclear what these machines do
Shredder is not what this machine does. This machine is a crusher.
It crushers whatever you put in it with a slow moving single cog like wheel.
So it will turn DRY material into wood chip size pieces, but 100% useless putting freshly cut vegetation in it.
Fresh vegetation comes out exactly the same as it went in, except the branch and leaves are crushed but completely intact. IT DOES NOT SHRED. Palm Fronds too come out as one bent in many places otherwise intact piece. Maybe if I left the fronds out to dry for a year it might turn them in...Read more

Recommended if you need a shredder.
I previously owned a GMC mulcher which was a waste of time. I was then given a Ryobi shredder which proved to be very useful for several years.
This spring the Ryobi machine died and I purchased an Ozito Silent Shredder second hand and have used it heavily over the last month.
I have found the Ozito was more effective and easier to use than the Ryobi and has never blocked as the Ryobi occasionally did. So far the Ozito has handled everything I have thrown at it. It is probably unfair to compare the Ryobi with the Ozito as the Ryobi was muc...Read more

Excellent product for the price
We purchased this with a few hesitations but were assured it is up to the task for general mulching around the backyard.
What a surprise, it is actually quite for a mulcher and can be used for hours without annoying surrounding neighbours.
This can handle 20-25mm branches with ease, the only item that can block it are long tough grass style plants/leaves.
As with any mulcher just let the machine do the work and do not force it or over load it and you wont have a problem.
We have had this for nearly a year now and has handled everything we have put through it without an issue.
Highly recommended for the price.

rubbish
Jammed within 10 minutes of purchase on a 30 mm green branch. Then the reverse function didn't work. Unable to remove the branch. The machine was unusable and was returned to the point of sale.
This machine is a poor copy of my old german mulcher machine which lasted 10 years.
Don't waste your time

Amazingly effective
We have a lot of fallen branches and overgrown bamboo to shred, and this shredder pulverises them into a fraction of the apparent volume. It's very quiet (although not silent) and makes mince meat of any branch (fresh or dead/dry) that fits through the opening.
The unit is quite heavy and feels a bit off-balance when being wheeled around, but at least it does come with wheels and it can be transported easily, however moving it up/down stairs is definitely easier with 2 people.

Excellent with palm leaves
I have had this for a while.
Pro
I have a lot of palms in the yard. This thing mulches them and I use it in the garden. It has paid for itself in the time I have had it.
Con
The mulch is course due to the technique used. It does not like fresh green waste. It was not expensive, and I will wear it out in another year.
Would I buy another one? Definitely. This one paid for itself.

Excellent to assist with garden waste disposal.
This is now an essential gardening tool in my back and front yard. I was blown away by how much time and effort it saved me, and how much extra garden waste I could fit into my green bin each fortnight.
If you are looking for petite and attractive mulch for the garden, I would probably steer clear. But if you are currently loathing the idea of standing next to you green waste win with a pair of pruners having to chop everything up to fit in, do yourself a favour and invest in one of these. I just put a 44L flexible plastic tub underneath it to catch what it spits out and tip that into the green waste bin every couple of minutes.

did what i want
I bought this product to use on my palm leaves and other sticks at a regular property and it did everything $309 at Bunnings can't go wrong. It reduced the mess in my yard from the whole front yard down to a few square metres I chipped it up quite small. So far I've been using it for 5 hours straight and it hasn't broken

Made a good job of Pygmy Date Palm leaves
My girlfriend lives in a unit that has a backyard with Pygmy Date Palms that haven't been maintained. They're the palms with those really nasty, viscous thorns/spikes that threaten to impale anyone who gets too close. Due to how big some of the palms were and the fact that many new palms have started growing around them, I decided that they had to go. That meant removing the fronds and then digging up the stump, completely removing them. Having spent two days digging out half a dozen of them from her backyard, I was then left with job of dispos...Read more
ing of the waste. I was looking at hiring a large trailer towed shredder from the local Coates Hire. However, accessibilty was an issue. So I started looking online. My garage is full of Ozito products and a search of the Bunnings website gave me two options; a cheaper "blade" mulcher or the larger self-feeding shredder. I read the mixed reviews on this website and bought the "silent" shredder for $309. Assembly is a breeze. The shredding unit is already assembeld and only needs to have the frame and wheels attached to it, the cutting/shredding mechanism adjusted and you're ready to go. Now, I did read the reviews and knew that it was more ideally suited to dry palm fronds. However, we've recently had a lot of rain in Albury/Wodonga and the fronds I cut three weeks ago were still green and full of moisture. I decided to proceed with the mulching anyway. The palm fronds were feed into the unit and chunks of plant material started falling from the chute. However, due to the wet nature of the material, the fronds were passing through the shredder in an almost flattened state. No big deal. I took the allen key and made a slight adjustment on the cutting mechanism, making the cut closer. I then passed the fronds back through the mucher again. Voila. They started coming out in shreds. Now I mention the word "shreds". This is a shredder, not a mucher. Think of this as a garden version of a papper shredder. Plant material is crushed and flattend out by a cogged cutting wheel agains the cutting plate. However, it worked for what I intended. I did have to clear the chute on more than a few ocassions, and got the know the pain of being spiked by the palm thorns (my hands were like pin cushions) and I did have to refeed the fronds back through the shredder (I would grab the frond as it exited the shredder and pass it back through before the rest of it had passed through the shredder; think of it as a "continuous loop".) This worked to reduce the material down to a mulch that could then be used on the garden bed.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Not Impressed
I purchased this to mulch Yukka leaves. The guy bat Bunnings said it was great for palms and there is a picture of a palm on the machine! Yukka leaves are very similar to palm fronds in that they are thin and fibrous. I put in the few days old leaves and it just crushed them up a little, they came out much the same except with crush lines every few cm's. Tried dry leaves and they came out the same, no crushing or cutting at all. Took it back and the Bunnings guy said that it only crushed the woody palm stems and not the actual palm leaves,...Read more
what if! Didn't matter what setting I had it adjusted to, or how much stuff I put into the machine, it spat out the leaves in one piece with obvious crunch marks and nothing else. Maybe good for shrubs etc, however, not for thin fibrous stuff. Got a refund.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Does everything I need
Great little shredder which cuts everything I can fit into it.
Does not shred as finely as the other type of chipper, but does not jam as readily as them either., and with a reverse switch it clears instantly too.
With both types of machine selection of the materials is important- material which is soft ant sticky and clings to the cutters will jamb both types.
When I want a fine mulch I just rake out the chippings and run over them with my lawnmower, but what comes straight out of the machine composts OK, if a bit slower than the fine cut stuff..

Hopeless
I tried it and for what Ozito charge, this thing couldn't mulch a thing, even after putting items through two to three times and I followed instructions exactly, no good and a total waste of time. Only good thing is, Bunnings gave my money back no questions, thank you Bunnings.

Does a great job - a must for anyone with a suburban block
I have had this for about 9 months. Solid performer, handles branches up to about 1 inch thick and palm fronds with ease.
I have chopped down a few camelia trees and this machine has saved me so much time and effort - it reduces the pile of branches into such a tiny space (about 1/10th the size) and then I can put all the clippings in the green waste bin
My only complaint is one of the plastic wheel fastener clips detached and has gone missing... no spare parts available according to Bunnings. Still fine to use just annoying as one of the wheels could easily fall off when moving it around.

Quiet and easy to use
I like this shredder. It is heavy but fairly easy to move around on its wheels. I particularly like its quietness, not silent but not too bad on the ears even without hearing protection. I have used it mainly for huge shreds of bark off messmate trees and it does a good job but the adjustment of the wheel is fairly critical depending on what you are shredding. The manual gives details of how to shred palm fronds and adjustments on the wheel are easily performed by using a provided allen key. Very happy with the shredder and I would recommend it.

A lot better than I was expecting
Didn’t thing it work that well, but it surprised me. Everything I had went straight through it without many hassles. It only jammed when I tried to put something too big through it. Even after it jammed it had a reverse mode to quickly clear it out. Would definitely reccomend

Amazing machine for the money
I bought this after reading many reviews. I have quite a few palms do it is ideal for munching them up. It will swallow Washintonia palm fronds without any problem and if it jams work it backwards and forwards and it will drag it through. Dont expect them to be all in little pieces when they come out the bottom. They will compost down if covered with green waste and kept moist. I get my oil can and oil the shredder cog and bearings copiously when finished. Put a drip tray underneath to catch the drips of oil. Keep it out of the weather as well....Read more
I fasten the shredder to the fence about 400 mm off the ground so it is easy to fill the bag under the shute. I tied a string to the catch bag handles and hang it off the top of the machine so it is easy to get a full bag of shreddings. Of course I do this close to my compost bins so i dont have to go far to empty it.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

It sounds to me like your motor has failed. I would warn anyone not to buy one. The blades are made of mild steel and need sharpening every time it is used. I had one two years and spent more time sharpening the blades than shredding. I am now trying to give it away
No it is not the motor the machine just continually shuts off under overload. Yon need to (with great difficullty I may add) to clear the jammed branch then reset overload switch. After two hours of pure frustrations I returned the machine. Do not buy!
