Top notch for the price
This shredder is really great for the price. It chews through thick and thin though I've found it does clog on my palm fronds a bit. It works much better if what you are shredding is a bit dry so I usually leave my stuff to be shredded for a week or two and then it really goes through great. I load it up with really thick stuff that I have to really work to get through the mouth and I jam it up a lot and just put it in reverse out of the jam. It really takes some punishment and keeps going and going.

1. Adjusting the cutting mechanism. The rotating cutting gear crushes the gardening material against a cast plate. You adjust the closeness of the plate as per the instructions. However, if you are cutting thick stuff or hard stalks, then back it off a little because the cast plate can break as it did for me. If you are crushing thin branches, then dont back the adjustment off as much as the instructions advise ( which is a quarter turn). Use some common sense when you are using the side adjustment and it will crush the material more completely and ensure long term survival of the cutting plate. 2. What is different between the shredder and the other Ozito cutting mulcher? Well the second one uses blades that can get blunt. It also clogges fairly easy and it is no self-feeding which the silent shredder tends to be. The shredder is also almost twice the price. 3. What can go broke on the silent shredder? Well the cutting plate is cast iron and can snap if you try to cut too many hard dried thick branches. The unit can be disassembled but there are special screws. With the correct screwdriver it is an easy job. The motor and the mount. The wiring etc is all very well put together. I would suggest that they could make this in China for $50 or less, but it is solid.3 comments
If anyone wants one of these machines in Perth, there is one on special at Spearwood. It's selling for $190 in the box. It's tucked away near the cafe so it might be there for a while.
Long term update of the shredder. The cutting plate broke - probably because I was trying to shred a dried branch. As stated previously, the shredder doesn't cut, it compresses the branch against a c... Read more
utting plate. Something has got to give and most of the time, it's the branch. So I got a replacement from Bunnings for about $25. It needs a special screwdriver to take the plastic covering off. The metal framework and motor underneath is built to last. It looks industrial. The cast plate is meant to be the part that breaks. Once the plastic covering is removed, the replacement of the cutting plate is relatively simple. Since that time, I have used it to shred a couple of trail loads of branches. Very surprising good machine
We munch bottle brush trunks, branches with no problem at all. Green leaves and other small shrubs turn into lovely munch. The secret in the silent muncher is a cog design not a blade design. You have no blades to sharpen or replace. If you do overload it your can reveres the engine to clear your muncher. My wife loves it.

Awesome little machine!
Totally agree with the 5 star reviews on the Ozito Silent Shredder. Gods gift to palm owners. Can't rate it highly enough!! Just make sure you get the 'silent shredder' and not the normal one. I had one of the 'blender' style shredders in the past, useless. Got the Ozito Silent Shredder from Gumtree for $50 and loved it. So impressed I got one for my parents too. Just google reviews on them, whirlpool have a owners group dedicated just to this awesome machine! And look on youtube for some reviews that show you how well it goes thru palms fronds...Read more
. I just pruned my entire front yard with it. It's a large garden and was pretty overgrown. Handles grevilleas, bottle brushes and other natives as well no problems! Just keep an eye on gumtree if you don't wanna pay the $300 new price! I got both mine for $50.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!
Well designed
Good simple well thought out design DYI machine. Crunches up all you can stuff down its throat.Need to use a little technique at times.
Keep the feed out clear as its inclined to block when leafy foliage. I've got mulch all around the garden great stuff for the plants and trees.

Amazed
I was actually amazed at what this thing could do, I had a tandem trailer full of branches and leaves that would have cost in the vicinity of $150.00 to get rid of at my council tip, I turned it into about 3/4 cubic metre of waste and got rid of it through my rubbish bag pick up for $22.00, along with some other building rubble as well, So I think over time it will save me a few trips to the tip.

It works well with bigger branches
It does the job well with branches and dry greenery, but does not make a fine mulch. I found the opening at the top a bit small which makes it hard to shred small branches and leaves . I find it a useful tool and having a reverse action stops it from jamming.

Essential Garden Tool
I had one of the previous models on a quarter acre, suburban block in Sydney and it was perfect for turning waste into mulch. Anything too big to mulch, was sawn into firewood, as we had a wood stove. It's still going after about 10 years.
This model has a different motor (induction I think), but works the same. It may be slightly less powerful, but the difference is marginal. Providing you don't put anything through it bigger than about 25-30mm (depending how dry it is - dry is tougher to mulch), it just chomps/crushes its way through every...Read more
thing. Sucks branches in by itself. We're now living on a rural property and anything from the 5 acre home paddock goes through it, so it has a lot more work to do. Same strategy - mulch + firewood. With a 3 year warranty, you can't lose. Absolute worst case is it fails 1 day after the 3 year warranty expires, so it will have cost you $2 a week - how can you lose? No blades to maintain. Only 1 moving part and you can adjust the cut via the plate. Reasonably quiet, way quieter than petrol/cutting mulchers. I made up a 100m extension lead, so it can be used across a wide area. Easy to drag around. A gem.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Magical, fun and broke after a year.. to be replaced quickly
This shredder does the job - it eats everything up to 35mm I would say and gets stuck on the 40mm branches, That does not sound like a lot but it seriously reduces the size of a tree - it seems magical the way it disappears and what is left can be used for firewood.
It is even fun and reasonably safe. It does tend to get blocked up so you need to keep an eye on it and make sure the exit is clear.
It did break (the plate by the blade snapped and fell out the bottom) but I took it back to Bunnings and they gave me a replacement with a 3 year warranty so happy days.
I can recommend it if you are a domestic user.

A great unit for suburban back yards
Have used it for two extended periods. Like others gambled on the good reviews and pleased with it.
Compared to my previous large electric chipper it is quiet (not silent!!) so don't need ear muffs, feeds in branches easily and hopefully won't need sharpening as it relies on crunching rather than slicing.
It does take some trial and error to work out its limits but then its great. It is not going to take 40mm dried out eucalyptus branches very well but anything less and if a bit green is manageable.
As others noted it is useless on soft green vegetation but I just use the lawn mower to mulch that sort of stuff.

Better than expected
The Ozito Silent Shredder works a lot better than I expected. Bought because of the positive reviews and they are accurate.
Mulched everything I threw at it.
- Quiet
- Self feed works well
- Long stems of a vine aren't actually mulched but are made much easier to dispose of.

Still the best one around.
I had a chance to use other mulcher and shredder since I wrote a review about this one a long time ago. Other high speed rotating shredders are a waste of time. Never once regretted getting my Ozito Silent Shredder. It is like a silent achiever. :) It gets the job done and doesn't complain. :) To enhance its performance, let the materials dry a bit first before putting them through. I have not used those petrol powered ones as they are too bulky and expensive to buy and run. So I can't compare the Ozito with those.

Great suburban shredder
We've bought two of these shredders and couldn't be happier. It will cope with lots of branches but doesn't like anything too green or really soft wood. Best to let it dry off a bit before shredding sometimes, just depends on the wood. Also, don't put too much in at one time, keep your fingers out of the mulch hole and then enjoy turning waste into mulch! You will need a long extension cord too. This mulched is better than others because the jaws crunch through the wood rather than shredding which can't handle heavy woods
Light to wheel around, easy to position wherever you want the mulch
Can't take large branches but handles most stuff really well

Lasted 3 months
Update.... my shredder just died shredding palm fronds. The cutting face plate snapped in half. Looking at the casting it is not hard to see why... the metal looks like a sponge. Extremely poor quality. Lasted 3 months.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bought this primarily to deal with palm fronds which should apparently be shredded by this device.
Well, they don't shred. The fronds pass through the 'shredder' and get chewed up but not shredded. I have adjusted it as per instructions but it doesn't get any better.
It needs a lot of adjusting too. Not difficult to do though.

Disappointing
I owned a Ozito shredder for about 5 years and it was great... slowly but surely chomped through most of my garden waste inc bamboo and palm fronds. When it finally broke I went to Bunnings to get the same thing as a replacement. The new version is terrible! It has a safety cut off which shuts the machine down every minute even with smaller branches from the lillypilly. The adjustment screw has already threaded. It's quality feels lighter than the other version I have. Used about 5 times then took it back.

Value for money
Is it fantastic? No. Is it silent? No. Does it shred palm fronds? Well.....if they are dry enough or you put them through enough times perhaps. But it does chew everything pretty thoroughly so you can either put it back on the garden or dispose of in other ways. And it is relatively quiet. I would like it better if it did indeed shred everything in my garden, but it does a good job of small branches like lilli-pilly prunings. It's not good with green stringy stuff and it is slow. But it self feeds and hardly ever gets clogged up, and is e...Read more
asy to release if it does. All in all - good value for the price and means I am more inclined to prune things knowing I can dispose of the waste without expensive trips to the tip or paying someone to take it away. Could be improved though and I like the suggestion someone else made of another blade below the rotating roller, to make the waste finer.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Useful machine
I used to have a relatively expensive ($1200) gas-powered chipper/shredder, and that thing made a RACKET! That is when it was working properly, and the blades were sharp. I sold it and am SO much happier with the little Ozito. It needs to be understood that the way it works, with the two gears pulling in and crushing the material between them, it is not going to cleanly cut green material. Dry material gets "chopped", green material just gets kinda crushed. It's a different type of machine. The product page on the Bunnings website does in fact ...Read more
suggest that this machine is intended for dry material - "designed for shredding garden material including dry plant residue, twigs, sticks and branches..." Where this machine really excels is in turning a large pile of branches into a small pile, which you can then put into your compost, use as mulch, pile up so it turns into compost, or bag and take to the tip - all depending on the material and what you want/need to do in your garden. It's manoeuvrable enough for me to move it around a steep and rocky yard if there's enough work to do away from the carport, altho it is kinda heavy and clumsy enough to not want to do that very often. It's important to learn what thickness of different materials it will accept, and to feed it properly. I think 40mm will generally be "optimistic." Always wear gloves and eye protection. I gave it four stars only, because of one thing that I think (am not sure) might be a design flaw. The exit chute of the machine narrows toward the exit, which means that it can clog up with green material. I assume this is intended as a safety measure of some kind, but it doesn't work, as the temptation is then to use your hand to clear the material out of the chute. Do not do this. If you need to clear the chute, either stop the machine, or use a stick. I'm tempted to downrate it further because of this issue, but the fact is that the machine is so useful and works so well compared to the much more expensive, larger, noisier, and dangerous machine that I had before, that I think it's worth 4 stars. In addition, my wife can use this machine, and enjoys doing so.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

The Munching Marvel
In the dark days before our dear little Ozzy arrived, we had a garden over-run with mounds of twigs, branches, boughs and sticks, all of them waiting for the big bonfire we promised ourselves we'd one day have. Of course, we never had that a bonfire - never had time: we were too busy chopping down, and chopping down, ridding ourselves of more and more bushes that had gotten overgrown while we were busy thinking about and putting off that bonfire. And so it went on until we were almost suffocating under the weight of our own compost piles. We...Read more
knew we needed help. Our grip on life was snapping like the twigs we'd stockpiled in the shed and we were collecting garden waste as furiously as an anorak collecting train numbers. And so it was we went to Bunnings where we stumbled upon our saviour: our dear little Ozzy. It was love at first sight - for us if not for him. He had thick wheels and sturdy handles, industrial looking buttons that said On and Off, a very attractive warranty plus a price that failed to make our eyes water. The girl at the desk said we could take him home that very day* (*terms and conditions apply) so we did. Since that fateful Sunday, our lives and our garden have been transformed. No more do we have woody piles littering our paths, no more do we get tangled in the thorny branches of our lopping labour. Instead those piles are chewed and ground, scattered to make mulch for our ever-hungry plants. Now we glory in the prospect of a branch-chopping session because, sitting at the side of us is our dear little Ozzy, silently waiting for his next big feed.Similar opinion? Shredder & Digester by the 'Backyard King'
OK, this is a tough cookie, it is a digester-shredder with self feeding as it pulls the material thru the slow rotating chopper, its faster than pushing. Best with long stem material which comes out as a coarse mulch. The machine is not designed as a fast blade chipper, but its rugged. I tried 2 machines, 1 small direct drive chippers, great chips but machine failed each time in less than 2 hours, upgraded to the Ozito (internally looks like a back door brand of some common manufacture). I am happy, it does what is designed to do. If you want to get serious buy a petrol engine 5 hp chipper. Personally I buy a lot of Ozito stuff and it all fairly good. Just remember to use it within its design limits.

Ozito SSH 240 Garden Shredder
Reading all the glowing reviews here influenced me to buy this machine. I had a pile of creeper/vine leaves and woody twiggy stuff (most of the twigs much smaller than the 40cm advertised limit) that I had already reduced with hand - cutter/secateurs. Maybe this is not what the machine is intended for, I don't know. I found the machine hopeless for the job. The insertion slot is so narrow and the feed thru speed so slow it is impossibly restrictive and time consuming for pushing in cuttings. My pile of stuff would have taken days to push in- on...Read more
e small cutting at a time, and the cuttings have to be pre-trimmed to fit in the slot-I reckon I could have minced the cuttings more quickly by hand. Even green creeper came out unchopped (yes I had adjusted the cutting gap as per manual). My experience was vastly different from the favourable reviews here. Perhaps I had the wrong task for the machine; I don't know. It was normal garden cuttings which was what I thought these machines were for. My impression was that it's a toy. Incidentally when I returned the shredder a saleswoman told me she had also bought one for her husband and they had been extremely disappointed.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

It sounds to me like your motor has failed. I would warn anyone not to buy one. The blades are made of mild steel and need sharpening every time it is used. I had one two years and spent more time sharpening the blades than shredding. I am now trying to give it away
No it is not the motor the machine just continually shuts off under overload. Yon need to (with great difficullty I may add) to clear the jammed branch then reset overload switch. After two hours of pure frustrations I returned the machine. Do not buy!

t if you dont clear it. The material then "backs up". The Ryobi cuts the material while the Ozito crimps it, it squeezes it. The resulting mulch is less pretty. The ability of the Ozito to pull through the branches etc is a huge advantage and it is far less tiresome to operate than the Ryobi. The Ryobi relies heavily on the sharpness of the blades. I bought many over the years. I resharpened them too but they wear around the middle of the blade - so it's an ongoing expense. Remember, it's a cheap small machine and it wont take huge branches.
