Possible phone hacking operation
Security heads up
I went to Phone Mania (HappyTel) at Booragoon Garden City to buy my wife an iPhone case and used my iPhone to illustrate the exact case I was looking for. Without permission, the girl at the counter took my phone out of my hand as I was standing talking to her and plugged a small, round, pale green coloured device with a ten key digital number pad on it. It was about 5cm in diameter with a lightning cord about 15 cm.
The iPhone burst into life instantly and I had to insist on having the phone back while she tried to buy time ...
Read moretalking vaguely about overseas travel. I took my iPhone back and pulled the lightning plug out of the device myself and immediately shut down the phone. I suspected she had hacked the phone. I reported it to Apple and to Centre Management immediately. Apple was interested but Centre Management said all they could do was ask a Security Guard to walk by, but they could not question the store. Which is a puzzle because if there is a Huawei operation to juice-jack Australian's phones it means Management actually condones a Chinese phone hacking operation. When I went back the next day the device had disappeared and suddenly the girl who did it had a great deal of trouble understanding me and insisted that I was mistaken. I was NOT mistaken. It meant I had to go back home and reset the iPhone which caused the iPhone to be totally erased and all my data lost. It took hours to restore from an old backup of data and even longer to put back most of the apps. I am not happy and I suspect that each and very time a customer hands over a phone it is given the Juice Jacking Hack and the customers do not know they have a compromised mobile phone. If the store had been straight with me and asked my permission in the first place and if they had explained what they had done when I went back for an explanation I would not be raising this issue. However, the hubris of the staff to just take your phone out of your hand and plug a device into it is beyond the pale. This needs investigating. Proper investigation.
