I got to own my Sasha when she was dumped as a puppy at the Iluka OP shop back in 2009. I have had her insured with Medibank Private and the only time I claimed on the policy I was told it wasn't a condition that they paid for (she had a small warty lesion removed from her front leg, pathology, etc. done). I have to renew my policy with them shortly Sasha is now 7 and nothing major has happened to her. My premiums are $50.20 per month for max$12K pa - reviews for Medibank are only ranked pretty poorly - I'm wondering whether my not having an owners certificate would be a problem should I need to claim. Do I have any dramas to go through to transfer to Bow Wow?

Hi Jean
I don't see any drama's as long as there have not been any pre-existing conditions (besides what you mentioned above) as they won't be covered which then makes the switch unwise. However, it will probably be worthwhile chatting to you before you commit to switching. Please can you e-mail [email protected] with your contact number and we can get in touch. Many thanks.

On the bow wow insurance page you should be able to get a quote, there are different levels of cover to suit your dogs needs and your budget, I got the highest level of cover and from memory it worked out to be approx $600 per year. I also remember seeing that you get a discount for multiple pets. I shopped around a lot before trying to find the cheapest and best option and bow wow had good prices and by far the best reviews, good luck!

Vicki, Lauren is correct, please go to https://bowwowinsurance.com.au for a quote or call 1800 668 502.
The 10% multi-discount will also apply on the second and subsequent pet when you sign up.

Do you cover our pets for life or is there an age limit?
I have seen on other insurer sites they stop at 9 years of age! Having loved & suffered with til their last breath, our 2 previous dogs really needed care after that age. I think it is despicable to end the insurance when we need it the most!

Bow Wow M.Bow Wow Meow Pet Insurance

Hi Sharon, I would like to clarify this as there often seems to be a misunderstanding with age limits. To answer your question, we do insure into old age past 9 years. However, the Accident and Illness policy needs to be incepted or taken up prior to your pets 9th birthday. As long as they are insured before they turn 9, you will have a policy into old age and until they pass on. If your pets are already 9 yrs old, you won't be able to get Accident and Illness cover. Having said this, our Accident Only policy can be taken up after your pet turns 9.

HI Rachy T, the pet ID tag coupon is automatically sent after the 21 day cooling off period following the application of your new policy. However, this has only recently been systemised so I am happy to sort this out for you assuming you have not received any. Please can you e-mail [email protected] with your policy numbers and you're request. Thanks.

Do you cover the treatment associated with snakebite and what cover would you recommend to cover very unexpected emergencies like this?

1 answer
Bow Wow Meow Pet Insurance
Bow Wow M.Bow Wow Meow Pet Insurance

Hi Kathy W
Yes, we do cover this in all our available policy options. The Accident Only option will cover a snake bite as well as our other policies which include Illness cover. We recommend getting both Accident and Illness as you want to be covered for illness type conditions as well. Our most popular policy is the Comprehensive Plan on the $8k annual benefit limit and the $200k excess. However, please feel free to play around with the different policy options in the online quote tool on our site (www.bowwowinsurance.com.au) or call 1800 668 502 for different plans and premium options.

Which of your policies cover dental for dogs, my dog although very young will need cover later in his old age as most dogs do... Just wondering what's covered?

Bow Wow M.Bow Wow Meow Pet Insurance

Hi Laugh-a-lil
Unfortunately our policy does not cover any dental work. It only covers $50 towards teeth cleaning per year under the routine cover option.
We are looking at making the option of dental cover available, however, this has not happened as yet.
Kind regards, the Bow Wow Meow Team

I am thinking of getting the major medical cover for my puppy. Just want to clarify some policies in terms of the excess that i may need to pay; it's $50p for an unrelared condition. I will also add routine care as well. So if my pups claims to get her vaccines or just see a vet for a skin itch, do i need to pay the excess? Thanks BW.

1 answer

Bow Wow M.Bow Wow Meow Pet Insurance

Hi Puppez, the major medical is designed to cater for large expensive vet bills if something big happens but with a lower premium due to the higher $500 excess (plus the 20% co-payment as 80% is covered by us). The comprehensive plan has the exact same policy cover but has the choice of lower excesses ($0, $100 and $200). I can confirm that the excess is not payable on routine cover claims.

Hi.
Can I insure a dog with a mild heart murmur? Level 1 on one side of the heart and level 2 on the other side. She has had this since birth. It has not worsened. We do a check up evry year. She has seen cardiologists. They have not recommended any medication. If I am allowed to join do I require a letter from a vet stating anything? If so what exactly. Please throughly explain.
She is 7 years old and a small dog, Chihuahua mix.

Bow Wow M.Bow Wow Meow Pet Insurance

Hi Zen, apologies for responding so late....your question seemed to slip through the cracks amongst the Christmas rush. To answer the above; you can definitely get accident and illness cover with us. However, any heart related conditions will likely be considered a pre-existing condition which means that it will be excluded from cover (assessed on a case by case basis). If you do decide to join, the only time that the assessors will need to see the vet history is when a claim is sent in (you will not be asked on application). If you are still thinking of joining and want to check if there will definitely be pre-existing conditions on your policy, please contact me on [email protected] and attention it to Greg. Many thanks.

Hi there!
Do you cover dogs for diseases they have been vaccinated against? My friend has a policy with Medibank and her dog contracted parvo at 6 months after getting the vaccine at 12 weeks.
The fine print of her policy states they won't cover it even if the dog was fully vaccinated and now she is looking at a 10k vet bill.
Thanks!
Georgia

1 answer
Bow Wow Meow Pet Insurance
Bow Wow M.Bow Wow Meow Pet Insurance

Hi Georgia
Unfortunately, our policy does not cover Parvovirus. We have found that the likelihood of this happening is very small if vaccinated against, which is why we do not cover this. As per our PDS, in Section 3 Illness Cover under ‘What we will not pay. ’ it states:
We will not pay treatment of the following irrespective of whether your dog or cat was vaccinated or not: a) for dogs: infectious canine hepatitis (canine adenovirus), parvovirus, canine distemper, parainfluenza and all forms of kennel cough. You will find that this is fairly standard with most policies in the market. Sorry we could not be of more help. Please feel free to go through our pet insurance brochure and product disclosure statement on our site for more details on what we do cover and what we don't. This can be found here: https://bowwowinsurance.com.au/forms-brochures/

Hi, could you explain why your comprehensive cover's policy does not include vet licensed alternative therapies? Are you working towards having this included? Australia is so far behind other countries in this. We are quite surprised that not even vet acupuncture is covered.

Hi Tmah, you are correct.
We do not cover alternative therapy at the moment.
However, we are looking at the merits of adding this as an optional extra.
Unfortunately, I do not have any clarity on dates for this.
Kind regards

This company & most others are so stupid they would have paid thousands of dollars for an after hours emergency clinic to drain fluid from my dogs brain - which I refused instantly because I didn't like the vets or their attitude & it could also kill her - because they thought she had meningitis. She basically couldn't move, eat or drink. Drove 200km's the next day to my vet for more than 25 yrs, $5 homeopathic remedy & she started improving instantly. By the time I got home 2hrs later she was her normal self & very hungry after not eating for 24hrs. All this company does is whine about increased costs & this is just one example of why costs are so ridiculous. A GOOD VET is far better value than any insurance.

Please look at animal physio as well, humans are covered and it's really not considered an alternative therapy for us!

Another question regarding "rescue dogs." I have an existing policy with you for my 8-year-old dog that was given to me by a friend who no longer wanted him but I have since cut ties with this person years ago so how do I prove the dogs history from puppy hood? I can only show proof of my ownership from my vet of 5 years?

1 answer
Bow Wow Meow Pet Insurance
Bow Wow M.Bow Wow Meow Pet Insurance

Hi Maureen, in this case the vet history is found from when the current owner took ownership. We would then ask for a letter or email from you stating when you took ownership and how that came about.

HI Razzamartaz - these are definitely legit. We are proactive and often ask our customers to review us. We are a smaller company and make it a priority to get feedback. Product Review is very strict with this sort of thing and do random checks on all companies. Any fake review is taken very seriously by Product Review.

I doubt very much that the majority of these reviews are real.

I feel these are fake reviews also. I was never asked to give a review whilst a member of this company. But I did notice another review which has pointed out that the majority of satisfied customers giving excellent reviews all have new/young pets...no pre existing conditions or haven't experienced asking for something that should be covered yet isn't.

I am sorry but I can't give you an answer to your question.
Our problem with BowWow is that our Dog had a pre-existing condition before we took out the Insurance policy and we were told that if we had not claimed for that condition for over 18 months we could apply for a waiver which we did but they would not accept this.
In your case however seeing this is your first claim I would submit it and see what they do.
I hope this has been of some help

HI Peanut Place,
Sorry for the delay in responding to this.
Please put the claim through and advise us in the submission that you can not access the vet history (assuming, you have not already sent your claim through). Ifyou have put your claim through, please can you e-mail your claim number to [email protected].
Klaus, regarding your 18 month claim waiver: Please advise if this was put through using the pre-exisitng waiver form (see link below):

How much is my premium expected to rise each year as my dog (now puppy) ages? I tried speaking to your offshore call centre about this - but no one was willing to give me an answer. Understand premiums rise as you are more likely to make a claim - as the dog gets older and potentially has more health issues - but how much, roughly, is this increase? Is it $10 a year, $5 etc. Please advise - your competitors appear more willing to discuss this information.

Bow Wow Meow Pet Insurance
Bow Wow M.Bow Wow Meow Pet Insurance

Hi There, unfortunately it is a very difficult question to answer as premiums are dependent on a few variables in the market. Therefore, we cannot confirm the % or $ amount by how much the premium increases. Premiums are risk rated and the claims history of the book plus vet inflation is taken into account. Accordingly, this is worked out at the time of renewal. What you can do is the following: Go to our online quote tool and put in the same breed but adjust your pet's age. This will give you an indication, however, please note that it does not take the claims history of the book or vet inflation into account as these are factors that we will only know at that current point in time when the renewal is done.

My policy has increased 130% in 5 years so I can guarantee it is far more than a few dollars a year. At this rate it will be costing me $1500 a year by the time she is 10yo & $4000 a year at 15yo. REALLY BAD value unless you are making regular large claims in which case I would assume your policy would increase even more than mine has.

Hi, my dog suffered from eye allergies and irritations earlier in his life and prior to us taking out pet insurance. We then took out the insurance last year and have just found out he has cataracts. Will this be covered as it wasn't pre-existing?

2 answers
Trevor
Trevor

Hi,obviously I cannot give a definite answer here. (Assuming you have comprehensive cover) But, as long as your VET Dr is ready and comfortable to fill out Pre-existing condition waive form (you can find it on BowWow website). Other thing to look at is full VET history.Unless they (allergies, irritations) were specifically ruled out as a clinical sign of cataracts and If there was no direct link (in symptom, treatment etc) or causing cataracts, I believe they will cover the cost (whatever % benefits) for VET's recommended treatment. (It has to be VET's recommended treatment, otherwise the cost won't be covered according to the PDS).

Bow Wow Meow Pet Insurance
Bow Wow M.Bow Wow Meow Pet Insurance

Hi Doglover33
If the pet hasn’t had any treatment, I would suggest contacting us on 1800 668 502 to discuss a pre-authorisation, as this would be the best way to confirm coverage. If the pet has been treated then you will need to submit the claim for assessment as we cannot determine if something will be considered Pre-Existing without having the vets notes. Sorry I can't be much more help than this.
