Unless you expect to pay more than $18,000 in vet bills over your dogs lifetime, save your money. The only incentive offered by this greedy company is 30% a year policy increases. Your best option is to find a great vet who actually loves animals & is motivated by their health not dollars - avoid chain store type clinic only in business to make money for shareholders - & they will not rip you off. Google homeopathic vets in your area & find one you like & trust.

I've had continuous pet insurance for my 12 year old dog, for the past 6 years. I'm dissatisfied with the service provided by the current insurer. Is it possible to transfer insurance to another company?

Hi Tracey
Unfortunately, you would only be able to receive Accident Cover.
This means that any illness conditions are excluded. As much as I would like to assist, I would recommend staying where you are for your 12 yr old dog.

Yes Tracey stay were you are, i found this out the hard way ( the hard way has cost us $10.000 odd grand) needless to say i am taking it further. Peace of mind stay put.

Hi b's mum, Desexing is a general exclusion under the illness and accident part of the policy. However we provide coverage of $50 which you can use toward desexing if you add the routine care to the comprehensive or Major medical plan.

what doesnt your plan cover.. what happens if i want to transfer over from another pet insurance company to yours? do you have excess payments for claims? do you waive 6 month wait on cruciate ligament?

1 answer
Bow Wow Meow Pet Insurance
Bow Wow M.Bow Wow Meow Pet Insurance

Hi Oscar, all the inclusions and exclusions can be found in our policy booklet on our website. Please copy and paste this url into your browser - https://bowwowinsurance.com.au/forms-brochures. If you decide to get a policy with us, you need to be aware that any pre-existing conditions will not be covered. Accordingly, if your pet has had any conditions detailed in its vet history, then these would probably be excluded from cover. However, if your pet has been healthy with no known conditions, then we would cover everything as indicated on our policy booklet. Regarding excesses, you have a choice of a $Nil, $100, $200 or $500 excess (see https://bowwowinsurance.com.au/compare-plans/). Since we cover 80% of the vet bill, the 20% co-payment is always payable by yourself. Yes, we do waive the 6 month waiting period. This waiting period may be reduced to the policy commencement date depending on the results of a veterinary examination of your pet. For consideration to be given to reduce the prescribed waiting period:
• Your Vet must examine your pet and complete and sign a cruciate ligament exam form on or after the policy commencement date.
• We must receive the completed and signed form within 14 days of the examination date for the cruciate ligament waiver to be considered.

Hi, we gave our dog a smoked beef bone to chew on and the next day we see blood dripping from her mouth because of the cuts caused by it. We took her to the vet and they did a blood test for her. While waiting for the result her situation deteriorated and we found blood dripping from her bottom as well. We decide to take her to emergency hospital and she had a blood transfusion due to the amount of blood loss. Would this be considered an accident or illness? Thanks

Hi Cathy, we would definitely need to see the details of the case here. It sounds to me that this is something more than just cuts caused by the bone. A full vet history would need to be provided plus consultation notes.

will pet insurance cover vet bills? i.e. this considered accident or illness??

Hi Sammy
This is considered an accident. Unfortunately vet bills that result from this incident will not be covered as you did not have a policy in place before the incident occurred. However, if you took out a policy now, we would cover all accidents that may occur in the future. If you take out an Accident and Illness policy, we will cover all conditions as per our PDS (excluding any pre-existing conditions).

I put in a claim for my dog who had sniffed up a grass seed and needed an operation. I had accident cover with bwm and they said it was not covered. I considered this an accident. I have since upgraded my pets policy to comprehensive cover so i hope there will be no other problems in the future.

I have a 12-week-old shar-pei, no health issues yet. If my dog gets entropian or any of the other health issues this breed can suffer from, will he be covered?

1 answer

Hi Traylee, Entropian is generally covered providing the pet shows no clinical signs or symptoms before the policy commencement date or within the illness waiting period. Other breed related issues such as skin and conditions are the same.

Do you cover any pre-existing conditions? My dog has anxiety over thunder and fireworks to the point where she attacked our other dog. The vet suggested Prozac. Would you have a policy that covered that?

Hi Kim, we don’t cover Pre Existing Conditions and the thunder and lightning is not covered as it is considered a behavioural condition (which is a general exclusion).

If my cat had diarrhea specifically due to bacteria prior to joining Bow Wow, and after joining, he has diarrhea again but from a completely different cause, will he still be covered? Or will diarrhea in general be considered a pre-existing condition (which would be very disappointing if it is). Thank you.

1 answer
Bow Wow Meow Pet Insurance
Bow Wow M.Bow Wow Meow Pet Insurance

Hi Nicole, coverage of future cases of diarrhoea would be dependent on the cause, as this can be a symptom of a number of conditions. Claims are all assessed on their own merits, but if the pet was found to have an underlying condition causing the gastro (inflammatory bowel disease, colitis etc) which could be linked to the previous episode the claim would be unlikely to be covered. If the gastro was in isolated incident such as viral gastroenteritis or toxicity the previous episode is unlikely to impact coverage of this. Please note that it is very difficult to provide a definitive answer, when we don’t know the full vet history of the pet.

After some reviews I am wondering if you pay excess for each visit to the vet? Is it worth getting lower excess if this is the case?

2 answers
Bow Wow Meow Pet Insurance
Bow Wow M.Bow Wow Meow Pet Insurance

Hi Natalie, our policies have a per condition excess in place. The per-condition excess is an amount (either $0, $100, $200 or $500 depending on the plan) that is deducted from the first eligible claim that is treated for a specific condition during the period of cover. The excess is applied per condition and not per claim, so if your pet has multiple treatments for the same condition, you will only be required to pay one excess in each policy year for the same condition. In other words, if you have two claims in the policy period for two different conditions, you will need to pay two excess'.

I had to claim before for a cat and I wished I had the no excess policy - I got no excess this time it adds up.

My dog recently had to be euthanised. He had several test, X rays, blood test, ect. My dogs health quickly deteriorated until he was completely suffering . the following morning after staying in the vet overnight we were advised to put him out of his suffering. The vet could not tell me the cause of his illness. Up until then he was running around with no pre existing illness. My question is if I had your insurance at the time and with no diagnosis would 80% of the cost for treatment and hospitalisation been paid out.

Thank you . Nelson

Hi jjd - this would be coverable under our Illness policy (Comprehensive and Major Medical). We cover essential euthanasia and overnight stays, however, voluntary euthanasia is not covered.

Do you cover desexing? I am currently with another insurer & the cooling off period, but I have withheld any claims, as am considering switching.
My question has been dismissed as being "elective", when the RSPCA, are actually the ones who push for this procedure to be done, as it prevents unwanted kittens & pups, more likely to stop 'roaming' & fights or vehicle collisions! I can't believe in this time & country an insurance company only considers desexing as an "elective" surgery. I would appreciate a speedy response as I need to decide what way to go with my pup's insurer.
Sincerely, Sharon Tuck

Hi Sharon, as our policies are primarily designed for Accidental Injury and Illness Cover, we unfortunately do not cover desexing under our general policies. However, as an additional add on to our Comprehensive or Major Medical plans, you can choose to include cover for Routine Care which could enable you to get back a maximum of $50 when you have your little one desexed. For full information on our cover, please see the following links: 1) Our plans: https://bowwowinsurance.com.au/pet-insurance/compare-plans/ 2) Routine Care: https://bowwowinsurance.com.au/pet-insurance/routine-care-cover/

Does accident and illness cover ivdd and back/leg issues in mini dachshunds? Operations and treatments?

If my dog had a bee sting and stomach bug before does this mean accident and illness cover won't cover any bug stings or gastro type sicknesses?

If my dog had skin issues/itchy skin, etc. what other things related to skin won't be covered?

1 answer
Bow Wow Meow Pet Insurance
Bow Wow M.Bow Wow Meow Pet Insurance

Hi Caitlin, IVDD is claimable under Illness cover providing there were no signs or symptoms of back/spinal issues prior to the policy commencement or within the 30 day illness waiting period. Diagnostic testing, medications as well as reasonable and customary vet treatment relating to this condition are all claimable.
As insurers, it is preferable to access all facts on a case by case basis, however, to give you an indication of policy coverage:
-Insect bites are assessed under accidental injury and are deemed as isolated incidents. If the pet was stung by an insect in the past, it is unlikely to affect future claims of the same nature.
-Gastro/skin conditions are assessed under illness cover and will be affected by pre-existing conditions. If the pet has had gastrointestinal issues before they were insured these types of conditions won’t be covered unless caused by something new i.e. ingestion of a foreign object. Diarrhoea/vomiting can be caused by a number of different conditions so these types of claims are usually assessed case by case.
-Skin conditions are deemed as one condition in our PDS, so if the pet had a skin condition before the insurance policy commenced then things like lumps, cysts, rashes, hot spots and skin infections would not be covered. Cuts/abrasions/abscesses on the skin are assessed under accidental injury and would not be affected by a skin condition exclusion.

Does your cover include ongoing illnesses for the duration of the dog's life? Our last dog had a heart murmur and was on medication for about 4 years until age 11 which cost us a small fortune (he was not insured!) - would this be something that would be covered by BowWowMeow? We have our current dog insured with Petplan because they cover for that sort of thing but they are very expensive!

1 answer
Bow Wow Meow Pet Insurance
Bow Wow M.Bow Wow Meow Pet Insurance

Hi Stu, yes we do have ongoing illness cover. In other words, if your pet has a chronic condition, you would be able to claim up to the annual benefit limit each and every year. However, please note that this will not be covered if it is a pre-existing condition (a condition that your dog has prior to becoming a Bow Wow Meow policy holder). I hope this answers your question...

I got to own my Sasha when she was dumped as a puppy at the Iluka OP shop back in 2009. I have had her insured with Medibank Private and the only time I claimed on the policy I was told it wasn't a condition that they paid for (she had a small warty lesion removed from her front leg, pathology, etc. done). I have to renew my policy with them shortly Sasha is now 7 and nothing major has happened to her. My premiums are $50.20 per month for max$12K pa - reviews for Medibank are only ranked pretty poorly - I'm wondering whether my not having an owners certificate would be a problem should I need to claim. Do I have any dramas to go through to transfer to Bow Wow?

1 answer
Bow Wow Meow Pet Insurance
Bow Wow M.Bow Wow Meow Pet Insurance

Hi Jean
I don't see any drama's as long as there have not been any pre-existing conditions (besides what you mentioned above) as they won't be covered which then makes the switch unwise. However, it will probably be worthwhile chatting to you before you commit to switching. Please can you e-mail [email protected] with your contact number and we can get in touch. Many thanks.

On the bow wow insurance page you should be able to get a quote, there are different levels of cover to suit your dogs needs and your budget, I got the highest level of cover and from memory it worked out to be approx $600 per year. I also remember seeing that you get a discount for multiple pets. I shopped around a lot before trying to find the cheapest and best option and bow wow had good prices and by far the best reviews, good luck!
