Worst insurance product I have ever had
Taking out this insurance was a total waste of time and money and I wouldn't recommend Medibank Pet Insurance to ANY pet owner. I submitted a claim, with all the relevant documentation, only to then be told I had to submit the necessary documentation before they'd process it. I'd already sent the paperwork. I tried to ring them, however apparently they can't take calls because people is working at home (every other company has managed to divert their phones). Instead I had to email and wait 1-2 days to get a response, then email back then w...Read more
ait 1-2 days to get a response and so on. Finally they advise me that I had a $200 excess for a $100 claim (I was pretty sure I'd selected no excess) - go figure??? So I immediately cancelled my policy. Then I noticed that on 28 March they'd taken another policy instalment. I cancelled on 3 April and asked for the outstanding premium amount to be refunded only to be told there was no refund entitlement... I would have thought the premium they took was for the coming month - after all they bill in advance not in arrears - thus I should have had a pro rata refund for the period 3 April to 28 April. I've emailed again... I guess now all I can do is wait... (Personally I think they should have refunded me the whole month given the time they wasted with back and forth emails but that was my problem for choosing such a crap product.) I'm off to talk to RSPCA about their insurance product. One of the clear winners with them is that they have no excess.

Don’t waste your money!
Terrible value for money! I’ve been paying for this “insurance” (and I use that term very lightly) for years and whenever I submit a claim I never get barely anything back! It’s almost to the point of fraudulent! Highly highly highly recommend not getting this insurance as it’s a COMPLETE waste of money!

Excellent!
Premium is affordable and never had any issues. Great peace of mind for covering Pet bills after being left $8K out of pocket treating my last cat in hospital when I didn't have insurance and she got sick.
Service is great, no issues

Don't Touch it!!
I strongly recommend anyone looking for decent pet insurance - look anywhere else. I have attempted to make 2 claims over the past 2 years, neither one expensive, but the amount of hoops they make you jump through to make your claim is discouragement enough. If I do not get my second claim approved which is only for consultations fees I fully intend taking the issue to Pet Insurance Australia and to the Financial Services Ombudsman. Then I plan to withdraw, not just from Medibank Pet Insurance, but also from Medibank Private - where I am a foundation member.

I am sorry to read of your experience with submitting your Pet Insurance claims. I just sent you a private message asking for a few more details. Thanks, Anna
I have requested that my account be closed immediately. It seems I am not even covered for basic consultation fees, so I will NOT waste any more of my money on this scam.

Very expensive policy for what you actually receive ....
I am so disappointed with MBP Pet Insurance. The older my dog becomes the more I have to pay for his policy. Now I am paying more for his policy than I pay for my own Gold Cover MBP Hospital and Extras insurance. They state exclusions if they feel that too many people for claim for this illness. I would be better off putting aside the money in a savings account .... I pay so much for the policy and yet I hardly claim ... I should be rewarded for this but of course I am not. I am now waiting for them to refuse my last claim. Shame shame on MBP pet insurance. Next year I will not be able to afford the premium. I would not recommend MBP pet insurance or any pet insurance that is underwritten by Pet Secure.

I wish to further state that I have Gold Paw Cover not Essentials Cover .... which makes it even more disappointing in this instance.

Is this a joke??
You have increased my premium by $500 this year!! Surely this is a joke!! How can you justify charging me $1750 premium per year for my dog. That’s more than my own personal health insurance.
Shame on you Medibank. I understand premiums go up but this is absolutely disgusting. Definitely a strategy to kick older dogs out of your company.
Don’t bother responding with your generic message about sending me a private message, I’m not interested, I won’t answer, and I’ve already sent an email to cancel my policy.
For anyone out there reading these reviews because they are considering joining this company I implore you not to. It is simply not worth the hassle and expense in dealing with them. Trust me, I’ve dealt with them for years.

Have spent thousands on my dog in the past few years and I havent been able to claim a cent. After a few recent treatments procedures I have been sent a request for lengthy paperwork and history which is just ludicrous.

How things change...
Two years ago when my dog got very sick Medibank Pet Insurance came through for me and I left a very positive review for them on this site. That was then and this is now....
A few days ago I received her insurance renewal certificate and I'm afraid I'm not a happy camper. My girl is now 8 years old and being a Jack Russell she could live to be around 16 years of age. I'm hoping for that and more of course because I love her very, very much. Unfortunately though (like most businesses) Medibank Pet Insurance doesn't accept love as a payment ...Read more
method. They want cash of course, and lots of it according to the renewal certificate I've just received! They've upped my fortnightly premium by 40% taking it to $47.29. That's almost $100 a month for insurance that has a claim reimbursement of only 80%. Of course I know costs increase, I don't live under the sink in a shoe box, however a 40% increase is utterly ludicrous when you put it into perspective: If Medibank Pet Insurance intends to increase my premium by 40% every year, and I'll bet they do, then by the time my girl reaches 16 years of age the premiums will be both astronomical and unaffordable. In fact it's fair to say that at this rate they'll probably surpass my own private health insurance costs. Health insurance for a pet costing more than health insurance for a human is almost too ridiculous a thing to contemplate isn't it? And yet here we are.... What really irks me is that they know a 40% increase is exorbitant and that the knee-jerk reaction from a lot of people will be that they'll want to cancel their policy. That's why they offer an 'alternative cover option' with a reduced premium and of course, a lower reimbursement amount. I'm afraid I can't see any point in doing that though, so now I have until the 16th of November to decide whether or not to renew her policy. I guess I'll be doing a lot of soul searching between now and then. Yes, when I've needed them they've been reliable, however their latest money grab has taken the shine off that. I'm really disappointed with Medibank Pet Insurance for putting me in this awful position.2 comments

Update: new condition and excellent service
We have had Medibank pet insurance since we bought our rescue dog home 5 1/2 years ago and I have written a previous review in relation to claiming for care around a significant leg deformity. In April this year our dog was diagnosed with EPI (exocrine pancreatic insufficiency syndrome) a digestive disorder requiring life long medication (oral and injectable) and frequent monitoring. Medications to manage both his leg deformity and new metabolic disorder now total $ 250 per month and will be required for the duration of his life. Blood tests ev...Read more
ery 6 weeks at present cost $140. Medibank have continued to be fantastic in relation to communication, ease of claiming etc. Each year I need to spend $400 ($200 for each condition) prior to receiving any rebate but this is clearly articulated when I put claims in - both on the online information provided and the print outs posted. We pay $80 per month which is expected given the age of the dog and the usually yearly price rises and I imagine that there may become a point in the future where cover for emergency care only would be more appropriate and we self fund the rest. Service has been excellent...1 comment

Don't waste your money!!!
The policy was easy to set up and have been with Medibank Pets for a few years now. Every time I put in a claim I usually have to back this up with a phone call because they don't want to pay for anything. Sometimes I have quoted directly from their policy booklet and then they have paid.
They cover the bear minimum. In the last year I have spent $7235 on my dog, including the insurance. I have received back approx $425. It is worth me saving the $1700 per year and using that to pay a third of the costs of the vet bills. I have just put my last lot of claims through and I will be terminating my insurance.
Don't waste your money and go with someone that doesn't query every single claim.

Struggling to get a claim approved
Have had insurance on my 2 cats for a few years and also have my own health insurance with medibank for over 4 years. Very disappointed with their claims department. My cat got very sick with bilateral kidney stones and was in renal failure requiring emergency care and an operation. Claims submitted with all consultation notes from the animal hospital plus her complete treatment records from her regular vet. 2 weeks after claim submitted it was put on hold as they required full vet history. I contacted medibank by phone and said this has alread...Read more
y been uploaded and they said they need to contact the vet themselves and get the vet to email them the same document which I had already uploaded. I didn't really understand but said ok and the vet emailed them the relevant documentation, the same vet history that I had already uploaded. Checking my claim status today and again they have put the claim on hold for the exact same reason after receiving the vet history from the vet. I have just spent over $16000 in saving my cats life and have done everything required to submit a claim but Medibank are clearly stalling and not being helpful at all. With how stressful the month has been already you would think they would at least be honest and treat their customers with respect and integrity. I will make my second phone call tomorrow to try and sort this issue out but I fear it will be the same old tactics again in trying to stall the claim. I would highly recommend not taking Pet insurance with medibank and instead try RSPCA or something else I have many friends that have had emergencies with their pets and other insurance agencies and have not had the same trouble I am currently going through.1 comment

Came through when we needed it!
You never quite know how good an insurance policy really is until you have to make a claim. In our case the claims process was easy and user friendly, and the payments prompt, efficient and easy to track on the pet portal. Can't fault Medibank's Ultimate Pet Insurance and would not hesitate to recommend.

My dog is not a used car
My dog had just turned 8. His policy increased from $77 per month to $108. The explanation was that as he is now 8 he MAY get sick more often, MAY need more Veterinary care, MAY cost more to keep him healthy. Apparently the premium increase is based on his location (He's not a used car you know), gender and breed. This has not changed since last renewal. Nor did he have a claim. Yes, they can give me cheaper cover. Yes it covers a lot less. Hmmm. The reason I got the policy was the cover level. I could understand a 10% increase, but this is she...Read more
er greed. They know that pet owners want to make sure their loved companions will get the care they need when they need it most. So they exploit it. I wonder how much their re-insurance went up last 12 months? 40%? I doubt it. Now that I am also a "senior citizen" in the eyes of Medibank, thank goodness they don't insure me. I would be in a world of trouble. UPDATE that I forgot to leave. Medibank private asked me to contact them to discuss this matter with a senior staff member. After several unsuccessful attempts to reach her, I finally made contact. Only to be given the same sad story about how much older pets vet bills cost them. I thanked her for wasting my time and took out another policy.1 comment
