A short notice for increasing rates
10 days notice for increasing rates for both Gas and Electricity. The rate is much higher than before. It is too annoying. I would like to transfer to another energy provider but it takes a quarter to finish the transfer. It means I have to stick to them for a whole quarter. I just wonder whether a short notice is lawful.

The unAustralian Company
I've been a Red Energy customer for at least five years.
I installed solar panels this year and have been happy with the decrease in my bill with 75% of it now being attributed to the Controlled Load 1 (Hot Water) component.
Yesterday (14 May) I received a letter advising of price changes coming into effect today (15 May). The price differences were all over the shop, some TOU rates up a few cents/kWh and some down with the exception of the CL1 tariff that went up 40+ %
Red customer service could/would not give a reason for this huge increase w...Read more
hen I rang. The revised rates I was offered were also more than the rates advertised on their website. The only conclusion that I can draw is that if you add solar panels and DECREASE your daytime usage, they are making up for that loss if revenue by INCREASING the tariff on your night time Controlled Load usage. They are also taking a punt on customers blindly accepting the increases and staying loyal. For an Australian company perhaps it's time you acted Australian Red.......my money as of Monday 18 May will now be sent to an off shore retailer.

Ignorant
I signed up but decided to stay with my old provider so rang to cancel ( during the cooling off period) & the person I spoke with was rude & argumentative. I firmly told him to cancel my account with them & hung up. I emailed a complaint & heard nothing back. My old provider assured me they could cancel & set up my account with them again..... Clearly there was a mix up because I have just received a reminder notice, my bill is overdue !
Bullies, stay away from this company!!

Dodgy Electricity Company, Keep Away
Have been with Red Energy for 12 months and received an email 06.11.2019 telling me that the electricity is going up as of 15.11.2019. After comparing the increase to Red Energy own website I realise that I am getting ripped off up to 10% as the rates on there own website are cheaper than the rates they now want to charge me. I called them and waited around 20 minutes before anyone bothered to answer my call and spoke to a lady who I couldn't understand her reasons why. I asked to speak to management five times and got flogged off and put on ho...Read more
ld for another 20 plus minutes. Finally got to speak to a team manager who basically couldn't explain why other than they can get away with it until they get caught out and loyalty means nothing. The manage said she would pass on my feedback to other departments and do the rate on there website instead of the ripped off rate they sent me and said no thank you as I will go with another company. The call lasted 1 hour and 3 minutes. To anyone who reads my review I would suggest that you never use Red Energy and shop around as I have found other companies who are much cheaper and don't have bad reviews as Red Energy.Similar opinion? Severely Skewed Estimate Bills
My usual Electricity bill for Aug-Oct is around $150, but this time I received a bill for $750. As a household of two full-time workers that do weekly line-dry clothes washing and rarely watch TV, I was floored when I saw the exorbitant amount.
I realised that the reading was an Estimate rather than an Actual reading. I found that they had estimated my usage to be more than 5 times the Actual usage for the period. Which was shown to be equivalent to the average 5+ person household in my area. Usually my usage is less than half of the average 1...Read more
person household in the area. Im not sure what formula they are using for their estimates, but it clearly needs a rethink. Stated on my bill, was the reason for the Estimate reading; Unable to access meter. This is absolute rubbish, as my meter has never been obstructed and is easily accessible from the street. There is ample parking in my suburban street and no fence around my front yard. I called Red Energy to request an actual reading because my estimate was unreasonably high, and could not have possibly been estimated using my historic bills nor using a comparable account.Similar opinion? Extortionists
Somehow my gas bill for a single female with no oven and gas hot water in a studio apartment was $141, $59, $117, and $237 from Oct 18 - Oct 19, with no logical explanation for the variation. Electricity bill is much the same. Clearly they are doing something wrong.

Gas and electricity for 5 years with no problems.
I signed up for gas and electricity 5 years ago, I compared most of the major suppliers using the previous years usage data and selected Red as the cheapest at the time. Since then I have had no problems, bills are simple to read and they provided me with my electricity usage data upon request. Not the cheapest anymore due to increased competition.

Lazy Customer Service
I am with Red Energy for a while now, everything seems OK except for a few times when they sent letters saying they will increase my rates. Luckily I called and asked for the same rate when I signed up
I and my wife are both account holders. When I asked them to add my wife as account holder, they asked for her IDs and everything and finally agree to add her as account holders.
Recently my wife is out of work and got a concession card, I tried to add this on their site but unsuccessfully, I rang them up asking what should I do, they said eve...Read more

Have not had any problem so far
I have been a red energy customer for electricity for about 15 months. The rate and my bills are reasonable.
All Red energy customers have a 10% discount if pay the bill on time. Once, I forgot to pay on time and lost the discount. But, I talked with their customer service and I was given another chance to pay the unpaid bill with the 10% discount.
I am not able to compare my bills with another retailer, but have not had any issue with red Energy.

I am in SHOCK
Today I rang your 131806 number and spoke to Jacinta.
Jacinta said that I was not the person on the account and could not tell me any plans because my husband was the primary account holder. Had conversation with Jacinta, my husband and me to confirm that the primary holder would like the account name changed to myself so as to ring and obtain updated information and change plans if needed. After half an hour this was still not accomplished as the question that was asked to my husband did not allow the account name to be changed. I was offered ...Read more

Unrequested door knocking and they tried to lie
Daughter was home. Person with shirt that has red energy logo and name started the sales waffle. Daughter tried to say not interested, he responded that he was working for the government and if she was the bill owner. He asked when the bill owner (me) would be home. He returned later and again started the sales waffle. Had to very firmly stop him and ask him to leave

One of crap experience with red energy about electricity bill, I never got in my whole life like this bill
I call more than 10 times in different day about my electricity bill. 2 of us living and I am working 7 days, my wife working 4-5 days. Don't have heater or Ac. Have 6.6 kw solar . After all last bill came $885 and this bill $529. I tried to discuss with them, even one of their manager said we cannot do anything for you, you use that you pay bill. Different time once they could not answer my question they said someone will call you and in schedule no one call. I really disappointed with red energy and seek for legal action against of them.

Disgrace
Several months ago I informed RedEnergy that I would be vacating the premises at the end of August,I was informed that the power would be cut off several days later as it was only cut off on a weekday.I also asked for my bill to be sent to my email address as I was going overseas, this did eventuate but when I tried to pay would not recognise the customer numberand I arrived back to a final demand notice and imminent debt collection.I find this very insulting, and would not recommend this company to anyone,I find them very second rate and unprofessional

Australian company that are doing the best they can at the moment
I was able to resolve issues today, I think the blame is more at the network provider and not Red energy. I have happily given them another go. Staff are friendly and helpful.

Bad experience with no initiative to understand nor compensate
I have contacted red energy weeks before my move in date to sign up for an electricity and gas connection. It is now two weeks and I still do not have gas connection, red energy as a retailer is getting rid of me, and me liaising between red energy and jemena takes a lot of time out of me with both parties saying different things and not taking responsibility.
I received email confirmation that I am now a customer on my move in date. Electricity was ok, but the gas has not been working and thus we did not have hot water. I thought there may ju...Read more
st have been a delay so I waited a bit, as I am patient and very understanding to businesses. I have contacted red energy to resolve the issue and have my gas connected 3 days after I moved in. I was given the runaround and told that I have to contact Jemena instead ( even though the customer-provider relationship I have is with Red Energy, not Jemena). I then had to contact Jemena, and I was told that this connection should be something that Red Energy should initiate. Red energy failed to initiate it on time and thus I had to suffer no gas and no hot water during the cold days of spring. When I contacted Red Energy again, they told me they will submit the request for connection, but for it to be connected within 24 hours, I have to pay an almost 200 AUD fee just to have it connected, although it was no fault of my own. I feel like it is unfair, and I did not have the funds to pay for it, so I had to wait 5 business days, 8 business days after I first called and we still did not have gas supply. I called them up again and I was told that they don't know what is happening, and they needed to contact Jemena again.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

Do not recommend!
Changed to red energy when we moved! We moved into a small 2 bedroom appartment and bought all brand new appliances when we moved. Our old place was sililar size and had very old appliances as it was already furnished. Our first red enery bill was twice the price of our last energy provider at our old place (and also more expensive than my parents 2 storey 6 bedroom house). Called customer service as i though there must have made some mistake and they basically blamed us for using too much electricity and did not listen to my concern. So we sto...Read more

Deceptive and Misleading and Prey on young parents
My wife and I had a baby daughter who born in June, 2022. Approximately ten days after returning from hospital with our baby daughter, both of us sleep deprived and stressed out, I received a knock at the door from a salesman with a Red Energy logo on his jacket. He said that if he could see my bill from my current provider at the time (Powershop esaver up Mega pack) he could check to see if he could get me a cheaper electricity rate than I was on at the time. After 'analysing' my bill and tariff structure, he said that he had a plan he could ...Read more
switch me to that would save us each month on our electricity bill. Wanting to have more funds to have to pay for my daughter's expenses, I agreed on the spot to switch over providers. 40 days later when I received my first bill from Red, I was shocked to get a bill that was in excess of $500. Prior to Red I had been paying 350 dollars or so for a similar period and I was quite angry. After checking the Victorian compare website and checking with both providers, I found that the door to door salesman had moved me from a plan with Powershop that was 10% under the VDO reference rate to one which was 3% under the VDO reference rate. I called Red Energy asking for an explanation - and mentioned that I'd undergone deceptive and misleading sales, at a time that I was most vulnerable. They said that as the VDO legislation only applied 10 days or so after they had transferred my account that I could not prove that they had done anything wrong and had no claims for compensation. Subsequent to that conversation I moved provider. They had the cheek to then call me back and offer me $75 to stay with them and to cut my rates to a cheaper plan. What is disappointing is that energy companies are ripping off parents with young children at a time they are most vulnerable. I'm really angry at Red Energy for stealing that money from my child, and for wasting so much of my own time in following this through. Retail electricity is very difficult to understand for busy and stressed out parents, and I'd appreciate some legislation that prevents these companies from preying on us when we are at our most vulnerable. Happy to provide all supporting documentation and evidence to back this up. I've written same to both my state and federal MP and consumer affairs. I write in the hope that some action now may prevent other parents on their financial limit from experiencing the same ruthless and deceptive behaviour.Similar opinion? Biggest Rip Off our of all the Electricity Providers
Lots of people on my suburb for apartments complained about Red Energy. They were charging crazy bills once you sign up and nothing made sense. To not giving you bills on time so you can’t get the on time discount to combining their quarter so you pay double the amount and so you can’t track your bills and also fall out of the on time payment.
Do not go with them as they will try make you pay and give you a shocking bill literally. I’ve been warned before because they seemed cheap but their calculations are very shifty and made to charge you the maximum amount.
They have been in trouble with the ombudsman many times so avoid them at all cost.

Dear Current and Past Red Energy Clients, Is Red Energy good for gas in Victoria? ...
I saw that Canstar gave them a good review for gas in Victoria, 2nd out of ten, from the Victorian surveys.
Yes I do know that Canstar does get sponsored by the energy companies, so Canstar is not an entirely credible source of information for this reason.
