I'm travelling through Queensland next month and have need to hire a number of hire cars during the trip. I'm nervous about not taking the excess reduction with hire company. Are you sure I'm truly covered by the hire car excess of the domestic policy?

Is it possible to add more Countries whilst extending the duration of my policy? My policy already covers 23 European countries (I didn't realise that I could just state 'Europe' when selecting). I wish to add 2 more European countries to the list. I've read a few Q&A's, which state that one is already covered for unplanned trips to European countries not on their policy list if they have bought cover for a European country, as the cost remains the same throughout Europe regardless of which countries are listed. They were posts from several years ago. Does that still apply?

Do you have a travel insurance that covers cancellation of tour and airfare by supplier?

2 answers
TID Travel Insurance Direct
BrendenTID Travel Insurance Direct

Hi,
Our policies have coverage available for cancellation by the supplier provided the event causing the cancellation is not due to insolvency or financial collapse or the lack of numbers.
However if the lack of numbers needed to complete arrangements for a tour is the cause of the cancellation, there may be coverage available for the cancellation of prepaid travel arrangements purchased separately to reach the departure point for the tour.
If you have any more question on coverage please see our PDS here www.travelinsurancedirect.com.au/pds or feel free to get in touch with us.

We are travelling to Croatia soon, and will be renewing our annual multi trip insurance. Can you please confirm just what the extra hire car excess covers. If I pay for $6000 excess, is this the same as the no cover excess insurance offered by the hire car companies? I always find this very confusing, and end up taking out the 'no excess cover', which adds roughly the same amount again as the per day amount. An I double insuring? Thank you Helen

BrendenTID Travel Insurance Direct

Hi Helen,
At the end of the day it’s up to you if you choose to take up their offer of a “no excess cover” but if you don’t and you become liable for one, you can claim that back through us.
Increasing your coverage to $6,000 may have a similar effect to taking out the “no excess cover” but ultimately these are two different products and you will need to read into the terms and conditions behind both to determine what is and isn’t included.

Am I covered if I go to Portugal? It wasn't on the list of countries.

BrendenTID Travel Insurance Direct

Hi Suzanne,
For travel to Portugal to be covered, you will need to list Portugal as one of your destinations. You can do this by typing it out in the destinations section. If your policy destinations include Europe or Worldwide, you would also have coverage available in Portugal.

Do you cover parents with two sons ages 23 and 25 if we have to fly home from Bali because of death of grandparent aged 83?

BrendenTID Travel Insurance Direct

Hi Pete,
If Mum and Dad need to fly home to attend a funeral and handle affairs regarding his/her death there is a policy benefit that directly addresses this situation. You would want to refer to Sec 3.1b. If the cause of death is due to a Pre Existing Medical Condition, the amount of coverage under all sections of the policy is capped to a total of AUD $4000

Yash Lasked

TID Travel Insurance Direct

I am looking to buy this policy soon but have some questions/clarifications. Under section 7 of the PDS, return airfare is only given if more than 5 days of a trip or 25%of the trip is left. For examole if you are travelling on a 40 day trip, then the last 10 remaining days are not covered.

Secondly, under section 8 (Page 14) - Resumption of Trip only applies where more than 14 days remain in the period of your trip.

Thirdly, with terrorism activities on an increase around the world, the policy excludes loss arising directly or indirectly from an act of terrorism (applies to cancellation costs, travel delays and special events). These are the main exposures when a terrorism activity occurs.

Can anyone shed some more light on these issues. When I travel abroad, I would certainly want these covers.

1 answer
TID Travel Insurance Direct
BrendenTID Travel Insurance Direct

Hi Yash,

Under Sec 7 upon your return back home to your usual place of residence following treatment in Australia, your policy period of coverage is rendered null and void as your “Trip” has ended. Provided there are more than 5 days of the trip, or 25% of its length, left to go, whichever is the greater; you would still be able to claim for the cost of the original airline ticket (less any refunds due to you). If you wish to remain covered while you resume your journey you will need to purchase a new policy.

Section 8
Sec 8 is quite similar to Sec 7 where if you wish to remain covered while you resume your trip you will need to purchase a new policy.

Terrorism
If an act or threat of terrorism impacts your journey with regards to your pre-booked travel arrangements, you will need to contact your travel service providers and carriers directly as we are unable to provide coverage for these events. Please keep in mind you are more that welcome to claim under any other section of the policy if the situation calls for it as these are still available for you.

My son has a very small duct in his heart that didn't close after birth. It is open minimally and he is monitored once a year by the cardiologist, who has advised us to 'treat him as normal.' I understand this may be classed as a pre-existing condition, but when reading about the condition, the heart ones sounded a lot more major than his. Do I still need to say that he has a condition when purchasing cover? Thanks.

1 answer
TID Travel Insurance Direct
BrendenTID Travel Insurance Direct

Hi,
Yes under our policy, your son would still have a Pre Existing Medical Condition. Our policy would not be able to cover any claims related to the duct as well as any other issues with his cardiovascular system as we consider all conditions regarding his heart and blood vessels to be interrelated. You would still be welcome to purchase a policy for him but with the understanding that there is no coverage for CVD related claims.

does car excess cover single car accidents

1 answer
TID Travel Insurance Direct
BrendenTID Travel Insurance Direct

Hi George,
The Rental Vehicle Insurance Excess will cover up to amount selected on your policy if you become liable for an excess because your rental vehicle was damaged, stolen or involved in an accident. The policy does not explicitly address the issue of single or multiple vehicle accidents, the main caveat is that you became liable for an excess in the first place. Please keep in mind that the policy will not cover any sort of personal liability arising out of your possession, use or ownership of any mechanically propelled vehicles.

Does your travel insurance cover cancellation due to a death in the family? Also, in the case of medical expenses due to accident, do we have to pay up front and be reimbursed or do you cover all except for the excess immediately? Cheers!

1 answer
TID Travel Insurance Direct
BrendenTID Travel Insurance Direct

Hi Melmo,

The policy has coverage available for cancellation due to an unforseen death in the family, You can claim to cancel (less any refunds due to your) or you can claim to rearrange the trip to a later date. The policy coverage could be limited if the cause of death is found to be due to a Pre Existing Medical Condition to $2,000 or $4,000.

If your expenses are not likely to exceed $2,000 then we would expect you to incur the expenses and claim for them after. Don’t forget to keep all medical documentation and proof of your expenses so you can submit them to us to substantiate your claim later.

If they are likely to exceed $2,000 you will need to get in touch with our EA team who are available 24/7. They will be the ones to provide you with arrangements and instructions as to what to do next.

In either case don’t hesitate to call EA in the case of a medical situation

Hi May,

Our policy does not have a waiting period, you simply designate a start and end date for your period of coverage, the full range of policy benefits become active immediately, however you will still need to obtain supporting documentation to confirm exactly when the impact to your travel occurred.

My son is 13. He is travelling with his cousin, who is 15, to Sabah Malaysia, departing from Melbourne. They are travelling unaccompanied and will be staying with their grandmother. Do you provide insurance for minors?

1 answer
TID Travel Insurance Direct
BrendenTID Travel Insurance Direct

Hi Melissa,

They are welcome to be on the same policy as adult travellers if they are both Australian residents. Even though they may only be aged 13 and 15, the policy will see them as adults, as they are minors, you as a parent will be able to enquire on your son’s behalf without issue.
