we are hiring a car in Sydney for a week in December 2017, im a bit nervous about taking out this type of insurance because when we hired a car in europe last year i took out insurance with alliance and the car hire rep at Malaga airport said the insurance was useless in Spain, I questioned other hire companies in Spain and they dont accept this either. Question is: Do hire companies accept this type of insurance in Australia or try to push their own insurance or worse still FIND damage when there isnt any?

I took insurance through Tripcover just recently for a hire car In Queensland. They are backed by Allianz Insurance who is a very reputable company here. They were extremely easy to deal with, sending reply emails immediately and I found it very reassuring and the cheapest cover available. Fortunately I did not have to make any claim but I would have no hesitation in recommending them to anyone who wants assurance and peace of mind at the cheapest possible rate. I would not look anywhere else for rental car insurance cover if I had to hire another vehicle.

HI Les, yes I can assure you that the policy is valid Australia and it is not up to the car rental companies to approve.
Just let them know you have your your own cover. Of course they don't like us as we are competing with them and they make
most of their money from their cover.

Hi there, does your policy cover towing? If I refuse the rental company excess then towing is not included from them and your website doesn't mention it
thanks!

Our policy only covers the excess that they would charge you. So if they charged you an excess for towing then we would cover that.

Hello,

I'm gonna have a trip with a van in Australia in June. If we take your insurance, do we have to take also the insurance proposed by the rental company ? Or yours is enough ?

Thank you in advance for your answer.

one OR the other should suffice, Pauline.

Thank you for your answer. So we rented a van and with our option, our standard liability is 5000 dollars. That means in case of damages, we have to pay the rental company Max 5000$. So we're gonna take your cover up to 6000$. Am I right ?

Hi Crumpsta
sorry but the way it works is that you will need a policy for each rental agreement you get.
But not to worry as you can use this 5% discount code 3004227 and you can take out the policy just before you pick up the rental.

Last year I have rent a car from redspot car rental company. They asked me to buy excess reduction coverage from them. I have told them that I have bought the excess coverage from tripcover and they said that in case of accident, I have to pay for the accident claim to the rental company first. later you can go and claim from your tripcover insurance yourself and they will not claim on my behalf. I'm a foreigner, in case i need to claim, is it convenient for me to make the claim? Thanks

Hi Tripcover,

If we take your cover, are we exposed in any way to any additional potential charges in the event of an accident by the rental company?

As you may know RITG, we are only covering the excess up to a maximum or $8000.
I am not exactly sure what the T&Cs are in Canada or with each rental company.
All you have to do is ask the rental company what is your excess liability.

The North American market is quite different.
I personally would not use tripcover. Instead checkout Hertz rental; as we have been doing for the UK. They may offer some included insurance in the North American market. We used Rental Cover.com for our Tassie car insurance but not sure about their OS cover. On thr surface they are more expensive than Tripcover however Tripcover operates (ostensibly) as a gap insurer; they will serk to have claims addressed through any other of your insurance policies before they pay a claim. Hope this is of some help.
Planning a Canada excursion ourselves at present.

Thanks Meggsy, we use our credit card travel insurance component for domestic car hire and o/s travel (Visa Platinum) But the Cadadian/Us market is differnt and you just need to make sure you are covering your butt.
Rentalcover.com looks good but their 'instant quote' is not working, I have contacted them direct.
Thanks your help.. we can compare notes later if you want? When are you heading off?

Hi, I rang Allianz to ask about how this car rental excess insurance policy also covers windscreen, tyres, roof, underbody, etc. The person I spoke with said that these items will only be covered if they are covered by the basic car rental insurance by the car rental company. So I rang AVIS and they said that these items are not covered in their basic insurance, i.e. I have to pay full price if any damage were to happen to them, which means it will not be called "an excess" since it wasn't covered to begin with. Does this mean I can't get reimbursement for this if I buy your car rental excess cover policy? I've read the PDS and it read to me like the policy covers those things even if the rental car company doesn't, but the Allianz staff on the phone said differently so I'm really confused. Thanks.

1 answer

DesmondXS

Sorry for the confusion but your windscreen, undercarriage, types, lights would be covered regardless of what the customer service rep said, simply as you mentioned, it is in the PDS. As our product is relatively new, some of the service people may not be up to date on all policies and what they cover.

First time buying from you - will be doing a road trip from Sydney to GOR and back into Melbourne. Unsure if 4,000 or 6,000 makes more sense - appreciate much more expensive for the 6,000 (which leaning towards), but given not that much different in excess cover, is there a reference point as to when you need which type of coverage? Sorry if this is a silly question!

Hi Dvara, due to financial laws we have to be careful about giving out individual advice.
You an find reviews on tripadvisor.com and ieatwords.com.au
Maybe double check with car rental company what your total liability is first.

Always ask for your car rental provider of their standard excess and then decide a suitable cover. For example, budget has a standard excess of $2850 for a people mover vehicle (8 seater) so a $4,000 cover should be sufficient if it comes to that. Meanwhile, europcar has a $5500 standard excess on a premium sedan, so a $6,000 cover will be more ideal. Just use your standard excess figure to make a call.

Dear staff,

AVIS told me that they would charge admin fee (3.5%) and GST (10%) for the Excess fee.

For example, if they charge the whole excess fee $5000, I will have to pay 5000+175+517.5= $5692.5

Are you gonna refund the admin fee+GST=692.5 to me as well, or only the excess fee $5000?

The cover I bought from you was $6000

Thank you so much for your reply!

Kind Regards,
Stanley

Generally the admin fee is not included in the claim refund. But lets see what happens and we can discuss it when you find out.

It depends Nana but not specifically recently we paid a customer some $450 for loss of use but that was due to the rare occasion
that it occurred and for an expensive vehicle. I would say generally it would be around $260 max.

Peter

Peterasked

Dear Tripcover. I would like to ask you something to make sure I understand everything correctly.

1. I am going to rent a car in Sydney with their policy of excess for $3000. Does it mean that if I write off the car having your Plan A - NIL Policy Excess up to $4000 that I am fully covered with your insurance, so I do not need to pay anything to the car hire?

2. According to the policy of the car hire company, the SVA liability is $350. Regarding to your "what do I cover" section on your websites, this is included. Does it mean that this would be also refundable?

3. Is overhead damage specifically for the engine? If anything else happenes to the engine and it's undert $4000, it is not covered. Is it correct?

Thank you for your answers.

Peter

1 answer
Tripcover
Desmond S.Tripcover

Yes Peter, you will be covered for the SVA or single vehicle accident up to $350 or do you mean $3500?
So sure about overhead damage relating to the engine specifically, but yes your engine along with the rest of the car's excess of
up to $4000 will be covered by the policy. Or up to $6000 if you choose that option.

G'day tripcover the more I read the more confused I get. As a follow on from bettersafethan question above with regard excess cover policy excess"up to"? If you cover "up to" $4000 what if damage incurred to vehicle was more than $4000 i.e a write off situation.I am sure rental vehicle will be worth more than $4000, lets assume $30000 so if a write off was to occur would I than be liable for $26000?
Apolgise for my ignorance but I am finding a definition of the "upto" excess question a little tricky?

Cheers

1 answer
Tripcover
Desmond S.Tripcover

Hi thanks for the opportunity to clarify.

The car rental companies take care of the "car rental insurance", which covers the car being written off, and third party damage, but leave you the customer with an "excess" that can be up to $6000.
We are only covering this excess liability not the entire car which is already covered by the rental company. So even if you write off a car or someone elses, you are only liable for the excess.

Simples, I hope :)

Hi Tripcover,

Can you please confirm if the access reduction cover applies, if i rent a car in hometown i.e. not travelling domestically or internationally. I live in Sydney if that helps.

Also if I was to purchase the excess reduction cover by tripcover up to 4000, in case of a single vehical accident the excess can be upto $6600 by rental company. Will I be covered for the first $4000 ? i.e. will be fully reimbursed if the excess payable in case of single vehical accident was under $4000, or will i be out of pocket for the first $2600?

Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions, would really help in making the decision to use tripcover over the rental agency products.

Hi BST, the answer to the first question is yes you can drive around the block where you live and be covered with no location restrictions.
ie you don't need to "travel" unlike travel insurance policies.

Regards single vehicle accidents....I will get back to you on this one as it is a little bit tricky

Thanks for the quick reply. I must say i am quite impressed with the reviews you have received and more importantly how you handle customer feedback. I plan on renting a car during the Easter break and then the following two weekends, so will eagerly await your response to the second question.
