emergency assistance not helpful at all
although prices were the cheapest, there is not enough support for enquiries during the trip. Our flight was cancelled due to a mechanical problem and we called the emergency hotline for advice on any claims possible. However someone who picked up said today was a sunday and we will need to speak to someone the day after for proper advice. It is just not reasonable that we have to wait till a week day for an answer when something like this happens. I will not buy again, even though it's one of the cheapest options, it's simply not worth it when something happens. Pick a company which has reliable 24/7 customer assistance!

Terrible claims process. Staff unable to actually apply the terms and conditions of the policy
Should have gone elsewhere.
After purchasing the insurance for a long around the world trip. The insurance policy said only US. Rang to complain, to be told an IT issue and it'll be fine. Glad I insisted they reissue it with the countries explicitly outlined.
Unsurprisingly, lodged a car excess claim and was denied as it was outside the US.
Sent the revised insurance certificate I had to insist on.
Then told breached the terms and conditions for a hire company I did not use.
I have sent off to their Independent Dispute Resolution team. We'll see whether or not I'll have to higher up.

Beware when taking out fully comprehensive insurance with Budget Direct. I put in a claim for missing a flight because of a three hour delay and wont cover the cost of purchasing new flights

Policy was very easy to set up but it was only when I recently went to use policy whilst on holidays I ran into trouble.
I have travelled quite extensively and first time claiming any type of insurance.
Within two hours of arriving OS at our destination my knee collapsed on me. Being a resort island in the middle of nowhere there was not a hospital to attend. I tried to carry the injury for 3 days before seeing doctor on island who gave me a anti inflammatory tablet and heat pack.

Budget Direct Travel Insurance is fraud
It looks good when you first see their comprehensive travel insurance, but you will very quickly change your mind once you file a claim. They use every trick in book to delay your claim and it covers almost nothing. They make their own rules as they go along.

Worthless policy
Yes its in the fine print but a 24 hour delay in my flight and only just being able to make a wedding with a three year old is not good enough to trigger insurance to help us. Just a waste of money

Each time and each new place you travel you get charged extra.
12months cover. Each country in that time should not be extra. The point of an annual Multitrip policy is that you're covered anywhere in the world for that 12 months.

Avoid at all Costs - Policy has no practical real world value
At the beginning, when they take your money, it is all sunshine and circuses but as soon as you make a claim the dark clouds roll in.
Don't be fooled by the PDS, it has a couple of pages on what is covered by the insurance then scattered throughout the numerous pages in the rest of the document what is not. And let me tell you, pretty much everything you thought was covered in the beginning is excluded by the time you get to the end. That's right they didn't bother waiting to get all the facts, my claim was rejected before they had all the information. Then trying to get information from Budget Direct (actually Allianz who handle the claims) was almost impossible. Trying to negotiate the review process was appalling. They don't reply to emails, they fail to meet their own service standards, they only return calls once a week on a Friday afternoon so if you miss them that is it for at least 7 days. When you call them you are shunted though three layers of service staff only to be told they will get back to you with a letter 'next week'. So keep away from Budget Direct, it is simply not worth your money to buy insurance from them.6 comments

WARNING: Comprehensive is not actually comprehensive

On a trip in Europe I had my 'business' bag stolen in Krakow Poland. It had over $3,785.67 of electronics (not hard when an iphone is $1,800). I received a police statement and lodged the claim.
After months of back and forth, the most this company is willing to offer is $1,200 to replace the items stolen when I bought comprehensive insurance. The reasons stated is 1) depreciation (which they will not provide me the depreciation schedule and none of the equipment was old enough where the resellable value would have been that low on th...Read more

The reason why I say ambiguous is because the product disclosure statement 'Luggage and Personal Effects^ $7,500, Including sub-limits for laptops, tablets, cameras and video cameras, mobile phones only $3,000'. At this point I stopped reading, but underneath that is 'Including single article limit/pair or set of items limit $750.' I don't believe anyone in Australia would agree that $750 is enough to cover a high quality phone, camera, laptop or any high quality electronic device. Anyway, STAY AWAY. I am submitting a further review to the Australian Financial Complaints Authority and recommend anyone in a similar position to do the same.2 comments

Comprehensive Travel Insurance? Rubbish!
We were considering a 'Comprehensive' travel insurance and chose the Comprehensive Budget Direct Travel Insurance as it provided the best "cover".
Our trip to New Zealand was delayed by one day due to adverse weather conditions. Virgin Australia amended the flights to the next day free of charge which was great! The only available flight to Queenstown was only available the next day, pushing our trip by an extra day.

travel agent that it would be covered under "Travel Delay Expenses" - covered $100 per 12 hours delayed up to $2,000 with $0 excess. We paid $162 for the extra night accommodation, which would ideally be covered the 'Travel Delay Expenses' seeing as we the next flight available was 24 hours later ($100 per 12 hrs x2 = $200 covered). HOWEVER, because we didn't leave the country on the date intended, the policy did not cover those delayed expenses. Are you serious?! We couldn't leave the country. There was no other way to get to where we wanted to go on the same day! We even considered flying to another city and driving down but wasn't an option for the same reason. Never been so disappointed with a company before. We would never recommend Budget Direct/Allianz whoever it uses, based on this experience. Such a negative customer experience with this company, very unsatisfied. Didn't offer to help or provide a solution as a gesture of goodwill. Be careful if you're even considering them...1 comment

Your chances of having a satisfactory claim
I was considering getting a Budget Direct domestic insurance policy so I decided to check on what proportion of claims had satisfactory results. All insurance companies are happy to make it easy for you to pay them but some are quite reluctant to pay on claims.
So I counted the positive and negative results of travel claims recorded on Product Review by Budget Direct policy holders. 21 had positive results and 65 negative results.
Go figure your chances of a happy outcome if you have to make a claim. I am looking for another insurer.

read very carefully the fine print
I had a fall in my sisters place and bleed all over carpet . thought my personal liability would cover the $270 carpet clean. unfortunately not so "because it happened in the property of a family member, it is not covered"
they also wanted me to fly on my original return date against the treating doctors advice. the "Nurse" that questioned me about my injuries didn't even know I had 2 injured legs and had no idea of how I would get to the airport with leg brace and moon boot on a 2 hour train journey.

After reading these reviews, espescially about Margaret's review, I wouldn't recommend to anyone, let alone to make the purchase. I've travelled to lots of place, never claim on travel insurance, and have used cover more and 1cover.

I have examined the reviews on Budget Direct and it appears that it is wonderful Travel Insurance until you have to make a claim and that of course is the crux of the matter. Why should I choose Budget Direct or Allianz, when the reviews on 'CoverMore' travel insurance regarding the claims is far superior, and yes they are more expensive but at least they are honorable. I think a Royal Commission into Insurance providers is overdue.
