Rob Jasked
Hi,
We've had our machine for 8 months and while very happy with it and the quality of the coffees it dispenses we now have 2 filters that are clogged(I assume) and water does not flow through. I tried cleaning with a pin(VERY laborious) but still doesn't work. Although water WILL flow through when no coffee in filter. I was tempted to buy 2 new filters but at $56.00 and $85.00 respectively there is no chance I'll be doing that.
Am I correct in assuming that the holes are blocked and, if so, can you recommend a solution?
Thanks,
Rob J

I am having the same problem. Worked fine yesterday, but today it clogs up the filter and stops, then spurts out when i take the filter off. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Ihave also descaled, cleaned the machine as well.
Rodney M.Smeg
HI Brett W.,
Thanks for your enquiry. Have you changed the type of coffee you are using? The grind may be too fine and not allowing the water to flow through. If water flows through the filter with no coffee, then you will need to adjust the grind.
Hope this helps

My Smeg ECF01 is less than 12 months old. Today I made the espresso and went to steam the milk and nothing happened. Then I noticed water pooling on the bench under the machine. I ran a few test pours through he group head and the same thing happened. No water coming out of the steam wand or group head, instead pouring out of the bottom of the machine onto the bench. I hadn't removed the water tank prior, it happened our of the blue. Can you offer suggestions?

I have fine espresso ground beans, and put one scoop into my double filter head and pressed the double shot button......there is NO beautiful crema like I'm used to pulling on nicer commercial machines, and the shots are pulling watery and fast resulting in a bitter shot. I've also tried putting more grounds into the filter, but that results in just dripping shots instead of a steady stream. Do I need a finer ground? I up'd the water temp to high. Any and all answers would be much appreciated.
1 answer
Rodney M.Smeg
HI Christie,
The coffee is too fine. You will need to adjust the fineness of the ground. We would recommend you purchase a packet of Vittoria Oro blend to use a reference to the fineness of the ground. Vittoria has the correct fineness to produce a perfect creama.
Hope this helps

How do I make two cups of cappuccino? I use the two cup filter, with two measures of coffee. When I press the two cup button and dispense the first cup it is far too strong, then I dispense the second cup and it's very watery.

Dear Jan, With the coffee machine you can only make one cappuccino at a time the two cup option is for espresso coffee when you use two small cups. Regards Smeg Australia

I brought a Smeg expresso machine a weeks ago and we are having so much hard time to press the power button down at first time we open the box and use it yesterday. Today, we have to manually press the power button the whole time in order to get a cup of coffee on our 2nd try. Could we get a replacement one? What should we do now?

Mandyasked
I have this espresso machine for about 3 - 4 months and I only use it a few times a week.
I have been using this bag of ground coffee for some time, and have been using the double shot filter as usual. Haven’t changed the setting – always the 2-cup dispensing. There is no indication that the machine needs descaling.
When I first pressed the 2-cup button, the sound of the machine made me think it’s about to supply coffee, but then it stopped right away and nothing came out. So when the lights have gone back to steady lit, I pressed the 1-cup button instead and it worked.
Advice is very welcome.

Steve C.Smeg
Dear Mandy, I would say that the cup filter needs to be cleaned after every use of the machine. At this point the filter cup may need to be replaced. Regards Smeg

Hi there. Very happy with machine. Can you advise where I can get a replacement filter basket for the smeg retro coffee machine. The ones I have tried don’t fit. Prefer a non pressurised one.

Hi guys, absolutely love my machine and makes wonderful coffee. Only issue is only recently, when frothing the milk, it becomes quite airy and almost bubbly just on the surface. It used to make perfectly creamy froth. Is there an easy fix to this as I cant wait to get back to my perfect coffees!

Rodney M.Smeg
Hi Bec M,
We would recommend pulling the frothing unit apart and giving it a thorough clean. Re-asssemble and see how you go. If you require any further assistance, please call our customer support team on 02 8667 4888.

I wish I bought a fully automated machine. I find this machine very hit and miss with its use. Some days I can get it to work, and get a warm cup of coffee, others I get a hot cup, others, I just can't get it to work. This morning was the latter, very frustrating.

When I try to make a Cappucino I first make my espresso then when I go to froth my milk I press the steam button, wait until it stops flashing then lower the steam wand lever to remove any water from the wand (only takes a few seconds). I return the wand lever to the off position and place the wand in my milk jug and lower the lever to froth the milk. It will only froth for a few seconds and stops. I have to press the steam button again and wait til it stops flashing and then froth the milk. Is this normal?

Hi Eleanor O,
This is normal.

Hello, I always use the two cup option, but it doesn't look like the machine is making the right amount of coffee - very weak. Definitely pushing the right button and have the right espresso holder. Is there a way to reset the machine? Can you tell the mls it's meant to produce on that setting? Love my Smeg machine, just missing the strong coffee :)

Hi my Smeg ECF01 dispense too little coffee when I press the two two cup or one cup dispensing button. Can you advise what is the problem?

I followed instruction manual to adjust the dispensing volume, water hardness etc. Read the instructions on page 15 “Setting the coffee quantity” to reprogram the amount of water for the single and double cups.
The manual is really useful for me as there was no after sales service readily available in Bangkok where I live
Hi, I have the same problem. I went throught he manual to adjust but does not work.

Hello, we have a brand new machine. It’s making coffee perfectly, but there is water leaking out of either side of the water container. The container is fitted in place and I can’t see why it would be leaking water so much. Appreciate any tips.

Hi there. We have had our machine for about one year and have recently noticed that it takes a long time for the machine to extract the coffee. It used to come out in a stream but now just drips and unfortunately the coffee tastes burnt. We've tried a different coffee but this has made no difference. We've descaled and have also run it through without the coffee and it seems fine, but as soon as coffee is put into the filter then it just dribbles and then drips really slowly. Could you provide any answers as to why it might be doing this?
2 answers
Just as an extra - we've also checked the stainless filter that you put the coffee into to extract and also tried it on the single filter which we've rarely used, and it's doing the same thing - so fairly sure that it's not the stainless filter that's causing the issue.
I have the same problem. I noticed it drips normal if we did not over pack the powder

Stuck on/off switch
Hello Smeg, the on/off switch of my ECF01 has over the past months become harder and harder to depress on or off. It feels like it is catching on something and be held about halfway to the point now I never know whether the machine is on or off. Unable to take the base off to see what the problem is because of the unique type of screw heads used. Nothing has been spilt around the switch that may have clogged it up. Can you please help. Thank you

Hi!
I have gone through two complete descaling sessions on my expresso maker and the orange light is still on. I have rechecked your video and bought the correct Durgol descaler.
After the first session of descaling, the orange light goes off when I go to steam but turns back on afterwards. Is seems to me that the light is not functioning right?
This process takes a long time to do and I do not feel a third time will be the charm!
