Water constantly comes out of the steamer so I can't steam the milk. Literally had the machine one day - what's the problem or am I doing something wrong?

Rodney M.Smeg
Hi MKB,
Thanks for your enquiry. Are you pressing the steam button and waiting for the steam light to remain lit before moving the steam lever down? If you don't press the steam button, the machine will dispense hot water via the steam wand. Please refer to your instruction manual for further information.
Hope this helps

Shivam N.asked
Hi
I bought the machine just under a year ago and it asked me to descale at 6 months which I thought was normal. However, it asked me to descale again 2 months later which I did but the orange blinking steam light hasn't gone away. I even did an extra rinse cycle. I dont make coffee everyday.
What could be the issue?
Thanks

Hi Shivam N.,
Thank you for your enquiry. Have you adjusted the water hardness to the correct level? For most parts of Australia, we recommend setting the hardness setting for soft water. We would recommend running a 'dummy' descale program with just water to see if it resets the light. If you require any further assistance, please call our Customer Service Team on 02 8667 4888

I have descaled my Smeg espresso machine 3 times according to the instructions, but the orange flashing steam light refuses to go out. What can I do?

I read that changing the setting to soft water might help. It did. The flashing descale indicator turned off. Then I read that I have moderately hard water, so I tried setting the hardness to medium, and the flashing light has stayed off.
I’m having the same problem. I’ve descaled and the orange light won’t turn off

I’ve been a barista at a coffee shop so I know I’ve been keeping up on the maintenance of my machine. I got it a few months ago and have descaled the machine. My steam wand does not have much pressure. The water used to come out in a solid Jet and adequate steaming pressure but now it trickles out and and does not steam well. Any ideas?

Rodney M.Smeg
Hi Mandy M,
Thanks for your enquiry. Have you pressed the steam button and waited for it to remain lit. Once lit the thermoblock is at temperature to produce steam. If the steam pressure is inadequate, repeat the process.
Hope this helps

Smeg ECF01
I bought my Smeg ECF01 coffee machine in May 2022. I make 2-3 espressos with it every day. I have experimented and found the right blend, grind, and tamp so the taste and crema are always great for my taste. I try to keep the filters clean by putting water through the filters after every espresso made - like making another cup of espresso without the coffee grinds in the filter. In the past few weeks, I have had problem: The coffee filter handle moves to the left, by itself, when a coffee is being made. On 3 occasions now, the coffee filter handle has gone so far left that it has come off and the pressure has flung coffee, water and coffee grinds all over my benchtop and on the floor. Thankfully, not on me. I can stop this happening by holding the filter holder firmly in place each time I use the machine, while the coffee is being dispensed into the cup. However, I can feel the pressure trying to move the handle to the left and towards another spill.
What is happening here please, and how can it be fixed?
I live in a soft water area, and the orange descaling light has not come on.

Dear Primo,
We're glad to hear that your coffee machine is making great coffee! Regarding your issue with the group handle, have you tried grinding the coffee a little coarser? This may prevent excess build up in the filter and not allow the handle to undo.
Hope this suggestion helps!
Regards
Smeg
Dear Rodney M @ Smeg.
Thanks for your response.
Yes I have tried grinding the coffee a little coarser. However, the outcome is coffee that tastes like dirty water. No flavour or body. (I have also tried grinding the coffee a little finer and it won't come out of the machine. This grind does, it just twists the handle to the left as well)
The great coffee that you're glad to hear that the coffee the machine is making is in between.
Can you please explain how the "excess" build-up in the filter occurs? As I explained in my initial question, I clean my filter by expressing water through the filter after every espresso made, and indeed before each espresso when I turn the machine on. Wouldn't this keep the filter clean?
Rodney M.Smeg
Dear Primo,
Have you checked the seal under the filter holder? It may have some grind residues which prevents a tight seal.

I have tried to set the coffee temperature to the hottest setting but how do I know if it has stored it as only the one and two coffee cup buttons light up. Should all three be lit when it is ready for use.

Hi, When trying to dispense hot water by pulling the steam lever down, the water comes out very slowly and the machine shudders.
Is this normal?
Thanks,

the sound is normal. It's the pump working to flow water through the thermoblock

When switching back to making espresso from steaming milk, the lights at the machine flash irregularly for a very long time forcing the user to switch off the machine and restart. How can this be fixed?

Steve C.Smeg
Dear Thorsten, The coffee machine boiler has to cool down before you make coffee again, you should prepare the necessary cups of espresso, then steam the milk. If you have further issues please feel free to contact me at [email protected].
Rodney M.Smeg
Dear Thorsten,
If you want to make more coffees after steaming milk, you have to cool down the boiler. To do this take an empty jug and place it under the steam wand, bring the lever down and wait for the machine to expel excess steam. Once it stops, bring the lever back up and you can make more coffees. For further information, please refer to the instruction manual - How to cool down the boiler'.

Hi,
We've had our machine for 8 months and while very happy with it and the quality of the coffees it dispenses we now have 2 filters that are clogged(I assume) and water does not flow through. I tried cleaning with a pin(VERY laborious) but still doesn't work. Although water WILL flow through when no coffee in filter. I was tempted to buy 2 new filters but at $56.00 and $85.00 respectively there is no chance I'll be doing that.
Am I correct in assuming that the holes are blocked and, if so, can you recommend a solution?
Thanks,
Rob J

I am having the same problem. Worked fine yesterday, but today it clogs up the filter and stops, then spurts out when i take the filter off. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Ihave also descaled, cleaned the machine as well.
Rodney M.Smeg
HI Brett W.,
Thanks for your enquiry. Have you changed the type of coffee you are using? The grind may be too fine and not allowing the water to flow through. If water flows through the filter with no coffee, then you will need to adjust the grind.
Hope this helps

My Smeg ECF01 is less than 12 months old. Today I made the espresso and went to steam the milk and nothing happened. Then I noticed water pooling on the bench under the machine. I ran a few test pours through he group head and the same thing happened. No water coming out of the steam wand or group head, instead pouring out of the bottom of the machine onto the bench. I hadn't removed the water tank prior, it happened our of the blue. Can you offer suggestions?
