Was reading one of the reviews and they mentioned that the unit should be placed 60cm away from any wall
is this true? That would be difficult for me to find a place

Allan B.Winix

Hi Mark, thank you for your enquiry about placement of air purifier units.
Whilst its correct that positioning air purifiers about 60cms from the wall may be helpful for air circulation, not many of us have that extra space to keep the rear of these units so far from the walls.
It's worth noting that the Winix air purifiers pull the 'polluted' air into the unit via the front, so my suggestion is keeping the front area clear of furnishings and other obstacles. This way the air entering the unit is unobstructed, allowing the high quality filters to capture all those pollutants. The remaining clean air then departs via the top (so keep this area clear too), which then creates effective air circulation in the room.
As example, the back of both of my Winix air purifiers rest against the skirting board and they still operate very effectively.
Mark, in summary, I suggest you will still get great results by ensuring there are no obstacles near the front or the top of the air purifier.
Of course, you are very welcome to call to discuss your own circumstances with me. Regards Russell

Hi, I have just bought this unit to help me with allergies. I suffer from snuffy/runny nose throughout the night and sneezing in the morning. After reading all the positive reviews I was very hopeful that this air purifier would help ease my symptons. I’ve only used it one night and not noticed any difference yet, wondering what other people’s experiences have been and does it take awhile for it to help with allergy symptoms??

Before you go to bed try running the unit on turbo for an hour in the bedroom with the door closed. Then turn it right down to low once in bed. Like a lot of hayfever sufferers I am already taking tablets (in the morning, zyrtec, once a day) and the Winx just helps clear the air at nighr. I hope it starts working for you soon.

Winix
Allan B.Winix

Hi Misha,
Greg's suggestion is an excellent way to use your air purifier.
The turbo fan speed is designed to remove airborne pollutants such as allergens very quickly, then by turning down the fan it makes it easier to maintain that clean air. Another handy tip is if your bedroom is quite large try running the air purifier on medium fan speed (after the initial turbo clean). A higher fan speed will turn over the air in your room more faster meaning it is getting filtered or clean more often.
Also for some people the air purifier can make a differance quite quickly whereas for others it may take a matter of weeks or months. Keep in mind this would depend on what they are using it for and how often.
If you would like further advice please dont hesitate to give me a call on 1800 122100

Can’t help there sorry. Imagine hard to link air purifier with resolving allergies if not the air Bourne issues in your bedroom ie diet, alllergen exposure during the day etc we never sleep with it on but run it during the daytime on turbo for an hour or two with ceiling fan running. Combine this with our dehumidifier every couple of days to reduce chance of mould and associated spores germinating. Would try to identify specific allergies and go from there

Appx. a month ago I submitted a report on the Winix Ultimate 5 Stage AUS-9500 and it has not appeared. Why is that? The report was up to the standards of all my previously accepted reports, so I am at a loss to understand why it has been ignored - perhaps it is because as it is only a three star report for a sponsored product it??

Hi Russell,
Do you still have $595 deal at the moment? My daughter who is turning 5 starts to show hay fever sign and can’t sleep well, she is really grumpy during the day. I want to get an air purifier and hopefully it makes a difference. I also have an another question, how long do I need to place it in her bedroom( about 11square meters) So it cleans the room before she goes to sleep? I would probably need to place it in living room during the day and move it to her bedroom at night until we decide to get the 2nd one.

Thanks

Hi Lin, Russell isn't available at the moment however I'm more than happy to assist.
The Winix Ultimate 5 Stage has proven to bring much needed relief to many hay fever suffers.
Running it all night, every night in the bedroom while your daughter is asleep is the best way to use it. During the whole night she will be breathing in pure clean air, no allergens, allowing for a full night comfortable sleep. We recommend turning it on to 'Turbo' fan speed for say 30min to an hour before she goes to bed. This will thoroughly clean the air quickly removing any airborne allergens. Then when she's ready for bed, turn the air purifier fan speed down to say 'Auto' or 'Medium' to maintain that clean air for the remainder of the night.
Our current sale price is $679.00 however I do recommend giving call us on 1800 122 100 and ask for Allan

Hi
Great to hear the Winix Ultimate has worked so well for Flower's son. As Flower mentioned, this model is very effective at removing airborne allergens such as dustmites and dust. Also great for other allergens like mould spores, pollen and pet dander. And not to forget, very quiet to run in the bedroom all night, every night.

Allan B.Winix

Hi Kaylene
The Winix Ultimate 5 Stage is an ideal air purifier for filtering and removing airborne allergens such as pet dander.
When you consider our filters trap 99.97% of allergens as small as 0.3 microns whilst pet dander is around 5 microns in size you can see it will be very effective.
Additionally this model is extremely energy efficient, perfect to run 24/7 keeping the pet dander to a minimum.

Hi Terri, I would imagine so, I would check with distributor though especially if house is large. I only use mine in bedroom and I used to wake up feeling very clogged in sinuses, that seems to have pretty much cleared up, can I also recommend some houseplants, NASA tested quite a fe and some are more efficient than others at absorbing toxins. I would look at using both. I also need it for burn off smoke particulate and this seems to help.

Winix
Allan B.Winix

Hi Terri, the Ultimate 5-Stage air purifier sounds to be the perfect fit for your issues of smells and VOCs. The Winix model AUS-9500 has an activated carbon filter made from palletised coconut wood, which has massive surface area and high absorbency properties. In addition to removing typical household odours, this filter also neutralises harmful VOCS (volatile organic compounds) such as formaldehyde, ammonia and other hazardous vapours and gases. This model is ideal for people suffering from chemical sensitivities, and of course some of those 'hazardous' new house smells. Happy to discuss more - perhaps we could talk about some great VOC tests results carried out by our Melbourne Building Biologist Nicole Bijlsma. Cheers Russell 1800122100

Terri
Terri

Thank you Russell, that sounds great, and yes I would like to talk about that test and also ask for a new build house what size room would it do say a living room/kitchen combined and how many air exchanges per hour would it do.

How long do the filters last and does it give off any ozone or harmful byproduct or air? How does coconut wood compare to other traditional products used?

Im also not sure how long these gases and harmful smells stay around in a new build Ive heard for months??

Many thanks
Terri

Allan B.Winix

Hello BuyGeorge. Yes, our Winix air purifiers and Ausclimate NWT dehumidifiers all have thermal protection from over-temperature or under-temperature conditions. The manufacturers include this protection and are quality assured. The manufacturers also include suggested temperature ranges: e.g.the Cool Season desiccant dehumidifiers have recommended operating temperature range of 1C - 40C. All air purifier and dehumidifier models are designed for Australian use and also comply with our Australian Standards. Also, for additional confidence, we've had them independently tested here in Australia by QEC Global who are approved by our Govt regulators to ensure quality and very importantly safety. BuyGeorge, you are very welcome to call for more explanation - cheers Russell 1800 122 100

Could you please tell me if your filters are cleanable, l have had an air purifier for extremely horrendous asthma and had it running constantly on medium speed but the machine died after around 18 months. l am after a replacement but obviously with it running like that l would want to be able to clean the filter. The filters are so easy to clean. You just pop the front open and give it a quick wipe (or I just vacuum it). I've now had it for 9 months or so and it still looks brand new despite running 24/7 and me having 3 dogs who drop A LOT of fur and living in a very dusty area (lots of new houses being built). The rare times we've turned the unit off (usually just because we needed the power point for something else temporarily), my mum has started coughing within an hour and this is what has reminded us to plug it back in. I was skeptical about this actually making any difference but I really can't speak highly enough of it.

Winix
Allan B.Winix

Hi Joan
What an excellent response from Allie, she is quite right about how easy it is to clean.
The filters in the Winix Ultimate 5 Stage comes in a complete cartridge so to clean the pre-filter you can do as Allie suggested or just pop it out of the cartridge and give it a wash. The only other washable componant of the cartridge is the Activated carbon filter which removes smells and VOCs. By taking it out of the cartridge and rinsing it under a tap will rejuvenate it absorption capabilities. Keep in mind this doesn’t always have to be done, just depending on what you're using it for.
Our Winix air purifiers are designed to run continuously 24/7 and are extremely energy efficient. If operating it continuously you would need to replace the filter cartridge approximately once a year. No need to try and remember when to do it either because our air purifiers has an indicator to let you know when it's due for replacement.
If you have any further questions please don’t hesitate to call me on 1800 122100.

How noisy is the unit for the bedroom?

2 answers
Winix
Allan B.Winix

Hi Mel, good question. This particular unit is ideal for bedrooms, where you need to balance the quietness (for peaceful night's sleep) with performance (decent airflow through the filters). The noise levels in decibels are as follows, but I'll explain more (36.2 low fan speed, 43.9 medium fan speed, 47.9 high fan speed & 61.8 turbo fan speed). It might help if I explain the way we use our 5 Stage AUS-9500 at home. Normally we don't operate it the bedroom during the day, so to quickly achieve purified clean air we turn the machine to Turbo fan speed for about an hour before bedtime. This fan speed turns over the air very quickly numerous times through those 5 filtering processes. Then, at bedtime, we turn the fan speed down to medium. This fan speed still allows a strong air flow through the filters, yet is nice and quiet to give us a peaceful night's sleep. Those of us who are super-sensitive may choose even quieter sound with auto or low fan speeds. The 'auto' setting allows you to 'set and forget' and allow the air purifier to move through the lower fan speeds in accordance with the pollution levels in your bedroom. I hope this is helpful - remember we are only a phone cal away. Cheers Russell 1800 122 100

Hi Mel,

I run mine on auto in the bedrooms, turning them on after I have cooked dinner. At first the fan speed is high while it's busy cleaning the air but that soon settles and it's very quiet, I don't even notice the noise. On low speed its quieter than our split system air con. I hope this helps you with your question?

Hi, I have a room in my house that gets the full on sun till 12 noon every day of the year. it gets a funky smell about it. I have checked and there is no obvious signs of mould/mildew etc but no matter how often I open the windows it does come back. i have put a damprid container in the room and it doesn't collect much moisutre - but over a two / three month period it contain about an inch of water. I also have a Himalayan salt lamp in the room that never gets turned off and it doesn't seem to make a difference to the smell . What do you suggest I purchase - a air purifier or a dehumidifier?

Thanking you.

1 answer

Allan B.Winix

Hi Karen - we might need to have a more in depth discussion over the phone regarding your choice of 'dehumidifier' or 'air purifier'.
It seems from your comments you may have already checked out our website and read over our blog on this question.
Normally, musty smells (perhaps funky smells too) are a sign of dampness, which normally means the dehumidifier may get to the root cause and dry out the room thoroughly.
However, your further comments suggests there's not that much moisture, which leads me to consider the air purifier. And yes, the Winix air purifiers are definitely designed to remove all types of smells, as well as remove airborne mould, dust-mites, viruses & bacteria, pet dander and even airborne hazardous chemicals. Before making your decision, is it possible we could have a chat over the phone first. Regards Russell ph 0422008777

Hi, I purchased the AUS-9500 but I find the screen to bright for my bedroom, even in sleep mode. Is there anything I can do besides covering it with cardboard?

2 answers
Winix
Allan B.Winix

Hi Alex, thank you for your question. You are correct that pressing the Sleep Mode on the remote is designed to dim the display panel. You can also automatically achieve the same dimming effect by selecting the Auto Sleep button (dim at night time and it returns to normal brightness during daylight). We generally suggest positioning the appliance some distance from your head - we have ours positioned at the foot of the bed. In doing so the display panel is lower than the mattress height and out of direct line of sight when sleeping. Can we talk more over the phone as I'd like to discuss how you are using the unit, and perhaps share some extra tips with you. Regards Russell 0422008777.

Alex G
Alex G

Thanks for the reply Russell. Unfortunately this is just too bright at any place in the room. For those of you reading this wondering how bright it is turn your mobile phone down to the lowest brightness setting, it's similar to that in pitch darkness. I will continue to cover the display with cardboard, it's just unfortunate as the sensor for the remote is behind the display so it needs to be flipped up to use it.

I have an open plan living area i would like to use an air purifier for. The area is approximately the size of 3 medium bedrooms. Could i get a winix which could do the job? Ir could i buy 2 to use in the large space? Thank you

Allan B.Winix

Hi Cat, thanks for your great question. Regarding using a Winix air purifier an area the size of 3 medium bedrooms, I'd sometimes suggest 2 units placed in opposite sides of the room. Having said that, I personally use only one air purifier in my open-plan lounge kitchen, which would probably be similar size. It handles everything quite well - cooking odours, little doggey pet dander/odour, dust, etc. You might try buying 1 only for a start and see how it handles the area. Can you give me call to talk more about your issues, as well as share our own experiences. Cheers Russell 0422008777

im going to buy one but i want to make sure if it is ionizer or not?if yes, can i turn it off,or is it on all the time?

1 answer
Winix
Allan B.Winix

Hi Nai

Our Winix air purifiers have PlasmaWave technology which is very differant to an Ioniser.
PlasmaWave creates negative and positive ions that combine with water vapour to form Hydroxyls that neutralise harmful viruses, bacteria and other airborne pollutants.
Unlike Ionisers, the Winix PlasmaWave does not produce ozone or to be precise the amount is so small it is virtually immeasurable.
In tests carried out by an independent laboratory, PlasmaWave produced only 3 ppb which is substantially lower than the allowable level of 50ppb as set by the USA's FDA

I’m personally impressed with the 2013 university lab tests of neutralising the flu virus using just the ‘PlasmaWave’ feature (99.6% reduction of live virus within 60mins).

And yes, you can turn off the PlasmaWave if you wish.

I hope this information is helpful.

Thanks Kathy & Dani. Yes, its a good question regarding Castors. As mentioned, these air purifiers don't have castor wheels, because most people find them very easy to move from room to room. But, as a coincidence I got a rather excited email from one of our 90+ year old customers who wanted to highlight her health improvement, but also to share her idea of buying a $10 'pot-plant' castor trolley from Bunnings, which did the trick nicely for her. Arn

Arnasked

1how long do filters last and 2 prices also 3 noise levels when running please?

1 answer
Winix
Allan B.Winix

Hello Arn. The filters for the 5 Stage air purifier generally last 12-18 months with 7 day/24 hour usage. Don't worry, the unit alerts you when replacement is required.
The replacement prices are approx $140 for the full cartridge pack and a little less if buying at time of initial air purifier purchase - we purposely keep these prices down, as replacement of filters are a must to ensure healthy air in your home. By the way, our health experts recommend filters should always be replaced at least each 18 months due to the potentially harmful pollutants that are collected within the filters over that period.
The noise levels are particularly quiet, ranging from 36 decibels on low fan speed through to the not so quiet 61.8 decibels when on Turbo fan speed. Also, as a useful tip, we turn on our air purifier about an hour or so before bedtime and setting it on turbo fan speed to ensure the air is turned over multiple times, then we turn the fan speed down to medium fan speed, which allows good turn-over of air yet allowing for a quiet peaceful nights sleep. Regards Russell
