Cathy

Cathyasked

Hi I was just wondering if the Winix Air Purifier will be helpful in removing stale odors from the air like smoke odors & cooking odors. My husband is a smoker and we are currently living in a 2bdrm flat attached to our workshop. I find with the smoking inside and the cooking as well as the dust etc from the workshop the Flat gets rather smelly. I do have all the windows (the few that we have) and doors open as much as possible.

Hi Cathy,
Best to talk to someone from "Ausclimate" as they also have a 4 stage which is a bit cheaper and should do the same job. With that said the 5 stage does a fantastic job on smoke, chemicals, dust and odors - and if I was you I would strap it to your husbands back when ever he lit up (or maybe just put it next to him).

Hi Cathy,
Great question. I'm sure either the Winix 4 stage or the 5 stage Ultimate air purifier will make a difference in your flat.
And given all the issues you mentioned, I would highly the 5 stage Ultimate model, just to be sure you are removing all that smoke, odours and any of the airborne nasties that may be coming from the workshop. The activated carbon filter in the machine is great for the odours, as well as airborne chemicals that might be making their way into your home.
Happy to take a phone call and explain lots more!

We're non smokers however it certainly does a splendid job on the cooking and all other odours.

How do I know what size to get?

Winix
Allan B.Winix

Hi Jal
Winix has 2 model sizes that are specificly made for Australian conditions, the Winix 4 Stage and the Winix Ultimate 5 Stage air purifier.
The Winix 4 Stage is recommended for room sizes up to 33 sqm and the Winix Ultimate is recommended for rooms up to 26 sqm.
Depending on what you want to use the air purifier for will determine on what model you would need. For example many of our customers who suffer from allergies such as hay fever operate their air purifier every night in their bedroom giving them relief and comfort while sleeping. If this is the case then either one of our models would be suitable even for very large bedrooms.

How does the air purifier 9500 operate in conjunction with ducted gas heating?

We don't actually have heating and/or cooling on through the night which is when we run the machine so I can't really answer your question. The company does give a money back guarantee though so I would suggest you give it a go.

Just FYI, our friends just bought one of these machines for their son on our recommendation and they've seen the most amazing difference in him too.

I have moved into Newcastle NSW and there is a lot of coal dust in my suburb. I love it here but I have emphysema and the coal dust irritates this. Will your product help this situation?

Allan B.Winix

Hi Franny
Newcastle's a lovely place, I totally understand why you want to live there.
Our Winix air purifiers can remove the smallest of airborne pollutants and that includes coal dust.
So yes, it can definitely help but keep in mind an air purifier cannot stop heavier dust from settling on surfaces before it's had a chance to go through the filtration system.
In your situation we would recommend running your air purifier 24/7 to keep the air nice and clean in your home.
Our models also have a 'turbo' fan speed which can quickly clean the air of any pollutants, a great function to use in the bedroom for instance before you go to bed.
If you require further information please call Ausclimate direct on 1800 122100.

what is the CADR rating on this unit

I'm sorry, I don't know. You'd be better off asking this question direct to Winix.

Winix
Allan B.Winix

Hi Yogesh, thanks for going ahead and buying this great air purifier for your daughter (please keep in touch)!
For the sake of other readers, here's the information that Yogesh raised.
The Winix CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate) have the following scores:
Winix 4 Stage – 236/248/252 (smoke/dust/pollen)
Winix 5 Stage – 183/182/194 (smoke/dust/pollen)
These independent tests through the AHAM help consumers understand an air purifiers performance, which is very appropriate.
But it also worth noting that these tests focus on an air purifiers ability to speedily achieve high rates of reasonably clean air.
So, high scores are not necessarily given to air purifiers that achieve superior overall clean air effectiveness, but taken over longer periods of time.
In other words, while faster airflow rate is important, even higher filtration efficiency may still be achieved using air purifiers having lower airflow rates.
Factors that may slow these airflow rates include additional air purifier features such as activated carbon filters – quite notable is the Winix 5 Stage air purifier.
Another important point; CADR doesn’t test the air purifier’s ability to remove hazardous airborne chemicals (VOCs), which may be typically found in the home.
We look forward to our VOC testing through the Australian Society of Building Biologist (ASBB).
Cheers Russell from Ausclimate

Hi Dannise, I bought mine for $595.00 plus $129 for the extra filters from "ausclimate" the extra filter is for 12 months plus down the track (wanted it handy just in case). The weather is fairly good at the moment and the Asthma and hayfever threats are very low - but the chemical annoyance is waiting over my shoulder. If you can get a good price from Chris that would be an advantage - if not ring Russell below for any questions you may have.
Regards (Mine will never be for sale).

I am thinking of getting one of these purifiers, but am concerned that if the company goes out of business here in Australia, I will no longer be able to buy the filters. How often are people replacing their filters? And do you buy the filters in Australia?

I haven't had to replace the filters yet on mine as I understand that happens about every 12 months with constant use but I am cleaning the pre filter regularly myself. Ausclimate seem to have been here for a long while now and I have no worries about them not being around in future so I doubt you will have any trouble getting the filters from them when you need to. Winix is an international brand and I'm sure you could get them easily from overseas if you needed to.

The air purifier came with a filter cartridge that lasts at least a year and I don’t see any risk getting filters in the future. ”

Hi. As this is an online purchase im just curious about the price difference. Amazon sells WAC9500 for US$239.99, approx AU$320. So where does the extra AU$275 come from? Shipping here won't cost $275, and I would obviously prefer to buy from Australian retailer, so my questions is are there other AU suppliers, or if this is a monopoly through AusClimate, and if so why the AU$275 price difference in such a globalized world? Thank you

Hi Kate.
Normally I would probably ask the same question about any price difference, but this is comparing a product that I wouldn’t consider purchasing from overseas. I have dealt with Ausclimate in the past when I bought a dehumidifier from them a couple of years ago and I am already familiar with this company. I guess you need to weigh up the risks associated with an overseas purchase and there are a number of things to consider apart from just the freight difference. I know that Ausclimate are easy to contact and deal with, just a phone call and I’ve been given the most friendly and helpful advice. The airpurifier has a 2 year replacement warranty and parts and freight do not have to come from overseas. I understand they are the only distributor in Australia of the Winix product and with my son’s asthma I am happy as their products have passed Australian safety standards, not sure about the overseas product. I am happy to purchase these bigger ticket items from an Australian company.

Hi Kate
Unfortunately I can't answer your question regarding price difference or other suppliers as i purchased mine from Ausclimate at a Brisbane home show. I also purchase things regularly from overseas and check prices locally as well as servicing policies (i.e do I have to send it back to US etc if something goes wrong). All I can tell you is that I have this product and love it (just come back from an overseas trip and missed it at night :)). Ausclimate have been great and were happy to answer all our questions before and after purchase.

Hi Kate,
I didn’t look overseas to buy this air purifier – too risky.
I prefer to deal with Australian companies when buying electrical appliances.
Best to leave it to them to make sure it’s safe for Australia and backing it up with a good warranty.
I don’t know of other companies selling this air purifier here.
No regrets buying it from Ausclimate ……..
Also I think by the time you factor in shipping & exchange rates you are no better of financially.
Cheers Tim McKimm
