Got charged a $19 international transaction fee
Booked a hotel in Australia from Australia & was charged a $19 international transaction fee. When I contacted them about it they said that all their providers are overseas which is fair enough, however none of the other accommodation web sites I’ve booked through have come with this fee. The particular accommodation site Trivago sent me to was based in Luxembourg & has a 1.6 out of 5 customers review on products review. They should only send people to reputable sites.

Inaccurate Information in regards to Pet Friendly Accommodation
It's lucky that I'm a stickler for checking things thoroughly or we would be stranded. I searched for Pet Friendly accommodation and got a list of motels that seemed a little large for pet friendly for a small town which made me dubious. After checking with each motels own website I found that NONE of the listed accommodation allowed pets. Had I booked using Trivago's recommendations we would have been left stranded and sleeping in a car with an old an arthritic dog. Caveat emptor (let the buyer beware)!

what a useless hard to navigate website
Following the commercial on tv, I decided to look for a place to stay somewhere on the beach in Victoria.
First of all I couldn't find where you put the place in to search...it kept taking me to Turkey!
Then when I started again at Google and actually put in Victoria there, it only came up with one place...on the beach, 5 star, in Victoria, with a pool.
Come on! How useless is this website?

Trivago is a scam
Never have I once got a lower price through Trivago (or Wotif or Hotels Combined). I just did a search for a particular hotel in Dubbo NSW and the 'best deal' was $195. I rang the hotel direct and got the exact same room for $170. Another example was a resort on the Sunshine Coast. No rooms available.... rang resort direct, yes, we have rooms. Always ring the hotel directly whether local or international. Shonky and a waste of time!!

Trivago! I can live without it
I do not use Trivago because I do not need to. I book direct, without fuss and usually with a big saving. But this is not why I will never use Trivago.
My lounge room is my haven from the madness of the world. But many times a night on the 7 network we get repeated annoying and uninformative Trivago adverts. Now the presenter is a very cute lady but that after many weeks of this campaign she is something to dread! I hate loathe and detest the Trivago adverts and the repetition is such a turn off of the business. Surely Trivago realizes that their adverts are becoming as offensive as industrial noise. Trivago, I hate it.....no no no!

Three stars? I don't think so!
Yesterday we booked the Mid City Motel in Orange NSW. It was rated 3 stars, but after we checked in, we picked up our bags and left. Of course the cost was non-refundable, but the place was no more than one star!. It was so tiny and old, and there was an old broken air conditioner in the wall, which was not used, as there was another above it. We just could not bring ourselves to stay there. Very, very disappointing, both in the motel and in Trivago for giving it the rating it did.

The hotel I found through Trivago has curtains which do not close properly. I have contacted them
Would not stay here again with curtains that do not close (no privacy ) as window looks out and people can see in.
Plus I cannot get anyone to come and do something about it.

Half way through payment the page froze and error message appeared. 2 days later I check my account and they have charged my credit card for $55 as commision. Waste of Time
We are planning a family holiday to the Gold Coast, and after seeing the many ads on TV, tried Trivago to see what accommodation deals they could come up with. We are a large family and wanted a 3 bedroom apartment by the beach. Trivago was pretty much a waste of time, providing a lot of irrelevant options that mostly did not meet our search criteria. A number of their offers were for single hotel rooms with a rate/night. When you go to view an offer, it consisted of three individual rooms, which I guess could be located anywhere in the hotel, ...Read more
on any floor? The cost was a single room rate which would have to be multiplied by 3 for the 3 individual rooms that would have been required. So many of the deals offered by Trivago would have cost us in excess of $600/night!! Having said that, if you are after a normal, simple and straight forward hotel room, then Trivago might be ok, but I would still do your own research and make sure that what they are offering meets your specific criteria. In my experience, Trivago seems to be just another one of these automated, people-less comparison websites with no intelligence other than to compare rates with those brands / suppliers that it has commercial agreements with and has access to their rates data base. If there is an error or ambiguity in the data base, then you will probably be presented with a list of irrelevant options. I would not have any confidence in them either, if you have a special need or anything else that is not straight forward and not clearly defined in the data base. My experience with Trivago further re-enforces my view that you are better off shopping around yourself and you can more often than not, negotiate a better rate than the comparison websites directly with the supplier or if you are not aware of what Suppliers are available, a local agent with expert personal knowledge. In my view, a comparison website is a good place to get an idea of what market rates might be as a starting point, but I would never book with them. The advantage of dealing direct with a Supplier is that you eliminate the middle man not only in terms of cost, but also in the event that if something were to go wrong with the booking, which does happen from time to time between comparison websites and suppliers. Some suppliers can be painful enough to resolve a dispute directly, let alone compounding the problem by booking through a 3rd party. In our case, I was unfamiliar with what was on offer in terms of our specific need for a 3 bedroom apartment, so I rang a local travel agent in Queensland and spoke to a real person with local expert knowledge who offered multiple options of exactly what we were after. She emailed us numerous times with friendly follow up phone calls, checked for cancellations with suppliers and we have now now booked what looks like a fantastic 3 bedroom apartment right on the beach in Surfer's Paradise and I am happy with the rate. I also have her local contact details if I need any further help. She also provided other helpful and practical information. No comparison really with TrivagoSimilar opinion? Trivago - no where near the cheapest deal around! Telephone the hotels reservation centres direct.
I have just had the same experience and now have the same advice as Destitute here. For an upcoming trip to Hawaii for 2 weeks I was scouring Trivago, Expedia and the other popular booking websites looking and carefully comparing the best rates for the SAME room/deal for major 4star hotels and resorts. They were all very similar prices. I then when to each of the hotels own online booking websites to compare prices with Trivago etc. and once again the prices were still quite similar to Trivago/Expedia. I then emailed and/or 'live chatted' the h...Read more
otels booking centres to get the best rates. Again similar prices were provided - however I was consistently advised by the hotels live chat and/or in emails to telephone the hotel reservation centre for the best deal/pricing. (1-800 numbers from Australia) WOW! The deals and prices available by telephone for the SAME room category (or deal) were significantly lower than what was advertised on any website - be it Trivago, Expedia or the the hotel's website. For example a Deluxe OceanFront suite right on the beach in Waikiki for 4 nights with Trivago/Expedia was - best price available - AUD$4145 (including taxes) However by telephoning the hotel reservation office direct I was given AUD$3338 for the SAME room/deal (including all taxes/charges) and fully refundable to within 72hours of check-in. Without haggling. Another example a top end Maui resort - Trivago/Expedia/hotel website - best available deal for 5 nights in a Premium King OceanFront room was AUD$3613 (taxes inclusive) yet by calling I got a price of only AUD$2890 (all inclusive) and no charge if cancelled outside 72hours before checkin. That's a huge difference to Trivago etc. In addition the telephone reservation agents from both hotel chains suggested that I join their loyalty program (free) at the time of booking to access a whole raft of extra bonuses otherwise not available by booking via a booking website. For example: guaranteed early check-in, guaranteed upgrade to the next level of room (if available), late check-out, complimentary internet, bottled water (daily), 35% discount on hotel meals, free newspapers (daily) etc. etc. So by telephoning the hotels reservation centres direct you're privy to a lot of extra deals and rates not advertised on their websites or on Trivago, Expedia etc. For only 2 phone calls I've already saved almost AUD$1400 over Trivago for exactly the same level of room/deal. Please also note that the great prices provided by telephoning direct include the mandatory daily 'Resort Fee' of ~USD$30 which I don't think Trivago/Expedia indlude in there prices.1 comment

Trivago is owned by expedia
Please be mindful as Trivago is owned by Expedia, which means "comparing" lots of websites in one place is actually comparing all the brands owned by Expedia in one place.....which means there's no comparison really as which ever brand you opt to book through Expedia get the sale...
Expedia owns so many brands such as
Hotels combined
Wotif.com
Lastminute.com.au
Trivago
If you really want a decent deal book directly with the hotel. All these websites take a big cut of the advertised rate and bully hotels.
All these brands are offshore customer service and granted the Indian call centre may hire staff whom speak English but the language barriers are appalling, the service disgraceful with no urgency or care.

Trivago provided false information and left us stranded on holiday
I planned my holiday well, using Trivago checked all the sites, all the reviews and locations. Their promoted deal in LA for a particular in the location I wanted near Disneyland was actually for a different hotel with a similar name but different location.
When I tried contacting them they only have web forms so we were left stranded with no one to turn to, and incurred hundreds of US $ in additional travel costs. We showed up at the hotel promoted in Trivago as next to Disneyland, only to find we had no booking, and had to search all hote...Read more
ls in the city with that similar name until we found ours a 20 minute drive away. Their website is unhelpful, only stating that 'they try to be accurate but contact us if you see a mistake'. Well they corrected the mistake in less than two hours but never contacted us back. With no address details to reference on our mobile phones, it was impossible for us to tell that we had a different hotel booked than what they promoted. February Update: After using website to complain, someone from Trivago UK got back to me and helped to resolve this. I am still disappointed in the inability to contact them, and that the Australian site never attempted to respond to my emails, but I was very happy that someone did email, and the website seems to finally be fixed. So there was a human contacting me who did apologize for what happened, and for that I thank them.Similar opinion? Write a review on ieatwords.com.au!

ately offered ~23% better rates than the very best Trivago, Expedia, Wotif or hotel online rates, including taxes - still with no upfront payment or deposit required and a 72hour cancellation policy. (No penalty if cancelled outside 72hours from check-in) In addition to a 23% better rate than Trivago - also given the 'Stay 4 get 4th night Free' deal AND resort fees inclusive (except for the 'free' night) Also offered free membership to their loyalty program which offers early check-in, late-check-out, guaranteed upgrade (if available) etc. etc. Once again I've saved an absolute BUNDLE off Trivago's 'best' rates by dealing direct with the hotel reservation centre by TELEPHONE.
